Has anyone just gone "home" and just vegged out and not done the parks??

Just curious. We are big time disney park go'ers but the kids get breaks at the usual HIGH CROWD times, ,summer, easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. I wonder what it is like to go to SSR or any DVC resort and not really do the park thing or maybe just hit a couple. We are so spoiled at going in NOv .and Jan. when the crowds are so much more manageable that I wonder if we would freak out going peak times. Just curious my fellow DVC friends. ;)

We have done this several times. and would pick. Boardwalk or Saratoga and make use of the kids activities at both places and the pools. we plan downtown Disney at night and a few meals like Chef Mickey's and hav ea nice relaxing vacation.

I have done this offsite as well. At HGVC and Marriott Horizons.

Easter and Christmas are the most crowded, summer somewhat less except July 4 week, and Thanksgiving less than any of the above. If you have not done a peak time before, then yes, it can be a shock the first time after going other times. For example, that January crowd you are used to, and I assume you mean after the first couple days of January which still have much of the Christmas crowd, is about 1/4 the size of the Christmas and Easter crowds. During both of those peak times lines for popular rides can exceed 2 hours for almost the entire day and evening and fast passes run out before noon; moreover, the streets remain very crowded. Conceptually: you are standing at the base of Main Street looking down toward the castle at noon; during January you see people strolling along but there is plenty of space; Christmas and Easter, you see nothing but bobbing heads next to each other and cannot even see the street or sidewalks. Summertime is not quite as bad but the real issue then is heat. Getting ressies for dinner before you go is a necessity.

Nevertheless, for veteran DVCer's, who have already seen most things before, and always know there are coming back again later, it can be OK. You just need an attitude that you will do what you can and not care about what you don't on this particular trip. Early morning can be a time to hit a lot of things, and then there are pockets of openings for many things during other times of day, e.g., at Epcot and MGM, many things other than the most popular things are fairly easy to get on after 3, likewise for some things at MK between 4 and 8. Early afternoons are a good time to be at the pool during the warm times. If you play golf, the Disney courses are excellent. Good time to hit night time shows such as Hoop Dee Doo and Cirque. Christmas time offers scenery worth seeing , e.g., the Osborne Lights. In other words, you can do fine as long as you have a healthy mental approach.

I've been threatening to do this :) Grab a book an hang at the pool. Take in the sites and sounds of boardwalk. taking our time strolling through different resorts.

Maybe some year I will get to do this...lol

Just got back from OKW for a month and done that

Only one down side..... It was 75 when we left and 7 when we arrived home yesterday. Of course it did give us an incentive to unload the car fast!!!

We have gone twice now the end of Jan. for about 6 days and WE ARE SO SPOILED. Matter of fact the kids always say....we should always come this time of year. Our 2nd favorite is the days before Thanksgiving...about 5-6 days before......then as it approaches Turkey Day it gets nuts .But we have had two nice trips then too. I don't think I could stomach the parks at Easter or Christmas......not after being at lull times and gettind to do it all so calmly. I would however might consider going if we just avoided the parks. Not sure the kid would like that theory though. LOL

We have been twice the end of January and they were pefect trips.....low crowds, walk on rides at time, just low stress, high fun. We have also been at Thanksgiving...mot bad at all the days leading up....but then about Wed. It is packed. I dont' think I could hit a park during a major holiday after going at low crowd times. I could probably do a trip down there with other activities in mind........not sure if the kiddos would love that though.

Once a year my wife lets me go alone for 3 nights to chill. I usually go to SSR (so peaceful). Take a good book, read by the pool. Relax. Absolutely wonderful!

Will be doing nothing next week at OKW! Long range weather is looking like it will be a good week for that. If it is rainy, I'll read my book inside; if it is sunny, I'll read by the pool.

Toughest chore will be to grocery shop - next toughest chore will be deciding where to go for valentine's day dinner!

We're driving down - leaving on Sat - can't wait to hit the usual spots en route - and especially to hit the grove stand on the way home for honey bells and grapefruit!

Trying to convince DH to try this. Might do it a few days prior to our Disney Cruise next January.

Have done this also, chose SSR as it is our home resort. The kids love the pool and community hall, always activities to do. We also take these busy times to do a few character meals (gotta have some Disney ;) ) . The kids did the grand adventures in cooking, try the pirates cruise from the grand Floridian. Not doing the parks gives you lots of time to experience some of the other things Disney has to offer, plus, lots of R&R :cloud9:

We did squeeze in 2 park days out of 12 on our previous visit :goodvibes

We are planning on going during spring break. This will be our 1st time during a peak season. I planned to stay at POFQ so the kids can swim and relax. We have been to WDW many times, and the idea for me to battle the crowds daily is not exciting. So with this in mind, we are staying 5 nights but will only go to 2 parks. I did get the DDP so we can have a nice TS dinner every night, many with characters so my kids dd7 and ds4 will still be having fun. We'll see if my kids will be okay with not going to 2 parks and favorite rides they will have to miss.

:dance3:

many times.

And not just at DVC either. We once did a ten day trip at ASMo and every day we woke up and said, "nah".

Since then we've done some "no park" trips on purpose and some just happened.

There is nowhere like WDW, and especially DVC, to do nothing. I think that is the "best kept secret".

I love that. Lazy vacationing.

From a slightly different angle, when we go home it's to Hilton Head and we have never combined that with a trip to the parks, it's just veggin' and enjoying the pool and the beach. However, the times we spent at Vero Beach have always been in conjunction with a WDW vacation (including parks) either before or afterwards. That said, we had a chance to stay at the Grand Hilton over near Sea World when it first opened, and each night we ended up over at the Boardwalk for a little while enjoying the atmosphere without going to the parks (although we did hit Sea World for a day, just to compare it with our now-closed, sold to & absorbed by Six Flags, then re-sold to Cedar Fair and dismantled Sea World Ohio).

Regards

We were there for 10 days in December and did very little in the parks. We went to MGM once, did LM and ate lunch. MK once, for the morning. Epcot a couple times, but never did WS and only did the Nemo ride. Did AK once, for the morning. Never hit DTD. We spent most of the time at the resort and the pools. LOVED it!

I am sitting here just now, before reading this thread, thinking when we will go in 2008. This years family trip is planned already for Oct/Nov. We will go sometime in 2008, winter time...but when. As DDs get older, taking them out of school is going to be harder. But reading this thread makes me think going during Christmas break isn't a bad idea after all. We will just skip the parks. Especially if we can get AKL! With all the offer the kids and that awesome pool, we could just stay there all week long and never leave! Hmm....

We leave in 11 days and have no park tickets - just me and DH at SSR, packing good books, planning on relaxing and going out for some nice meals at some of the other resorts. That's a favourite past-time of mine while at WDW, touring around the other resorts to check out their gift shops, pools, or just relax in a different atmosphere in other lobbies and watch others trying to run to catch the next park bus!

We took our DS on his first trip in March 2005. This was also a Spring Training trip for my DH. It rained several days that week so a couple of our games got rained out. We were there 6 days in all. Only went to parks 1 day. Did AK in the AM then MK in the PM. The rest of the week we did whatever we wanted. Shopped, ate, just lounged. We LOVED it!

We are thinking about doing it again this year. Our hoppers only have 1 day left on them and I'm really not wanting to shell out over $1,000 for tix this year. We'll see!

Also thinking about doing  UNIVERSAL  this year instead. 3 tickets for us would only cost $275 for a week there with that new ticket deal they have going. We haven't been to US since 2001 (well except for a couple of dinners at Emeril's at Citywalk). We know we could do everything in 2 days so we wouldn't need a week. We could do one Disney park day and 2 days at US then the rest of the time for whatever we please. :woohoo:

I am really enjoying reading these DVC boards NOW THAT WE ARE MEMBERS. WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO. LOL Then to read how much others just love being at SSR or their home resort even with limited/no park days really excites me too. What great ideas.

Well a big "Welcome Home"!!! :rotfl: Congratulations!:rotfl:

Not since the AP discount. Not that we couldn't leave tomorrow and spend a week (or a month) at any DVC Resort in WDW and never hit a park and it would be fabulous-but since we have AP it's too easy to go to a night show and an attraction or 2.
