Gratuity to be removed from DDP!!

Let's keep the discussion friendly folks.

WHile in the US, the standard practice for tipping IS 15%-20% of the bill. If service is excellant or horrible, it is adjusted up or down.

If somoeone chooses to not follow the standard practices that is their business. While I do feel for the servers. As I am sure many will share, servers DO NOT make minimum wage. They are also taxed on projected tips, whether they actually get those tips or not.

Servers at buffets also deserve tips. They are not paid more because it is a buffet. They still serve your table. Make sure your drinks are refilled, remove dirty plates, and any other requests.

On a side note, my Dad tips according to some formula only he knows. :rotfl2: When the whole family goes out, I always make sure to leave the table last, check the bill, and slip more money on the table. It keeps Dad happy, and I make sure the servers are tipped appropriately.

Not sure why the PP tips the way they do, but it is not the standard practice. But lets keep the comments friendly, ok?:thumbsup2

Oh so just because we can only afford a small tip we shouldnt eat there period? That is so rude of you to think of that. We arent stiffing the server. We are doing what we can afford. Theres a difference there. In my opinion the people who really deserve the tips are the cooks. THEY are the ones that are preparing your food. Not the waiter. All the waiter has to do is take your order, bring your food and give you a check and thats it. I've done a lot more in my old job working at a retail store, then they do and only made $6 an hr, didnt hear me complaining. And what about those who dont tip at all? Theres plenty on people that dont tip. They dont see the purpose or just cant afford to. I think its stupid for those who dont go out to dinner only because they cant afford to tip. Do you have any idea how stupid that sounds? You would rather give up spending time with your family and enjoying a nice meal out only because you cant tip. I feel so sorry for those people. Cuz its obvious you care more about the server then your ownself or family.

So the only way to show you care about your family is to take them to an expensive restaurant you can't afford ???

Not really a flame please but... In your sig you have the GF X2 and AKL. If you can afford these places how can you not afford a "decent" tip?? unfortunately in the USA tips are dependent on for income by the server. In other countries the tip is "built in" to the price automatically to avoid the whole stiff/affordable tip arguement. When a server is not tipped accoding to standard you are taking money out of their pocket, unless the service is poor. It's not a god system but its what we have in this country.

Believe it or not it's possible to spend with your family without stiffing those who wait on you.

Can't afford to tip the correct on a $100.00 meal? Then don't order a $100.00 deal. If you can only afford a $5.00 tip, then make sure you order accordingly.

If someone can afford transportation(air, train, bus or car) to WDW, hotel cost, park passes, meals... then they should be able to leave a DECENT tip.

If they can't, maybe they should postpone their trip for a week or two. They could then use the extra pay check to tip correctly.

First they lower the food quality. then they lower the food quality. Then they start taking out the more expensive items completely off the menu. Now they remove gratuity. Disney has lost their minds. It is official. This is our last year on the free disney dining plan. Even if they offer it next year I will not be using it. Disney is under pressure to keep making more and more money to make the stockholders happy but when will it end? Hotel prices up 40%. ticket prices on the rise. Food going down the toliet. To think I moved to florida because of my love for disney and have just watched it get worse. rant over

Im not gonna say oh we cant go out to eat cuz we cant afford a thousand dollar tip.

OMG, this is so wrong on so many levels. Nobody is talking about $1000. Your sarcasm is strange. We're only talking about paying for the service you received. Going out to eat means not only paying the bill, but tipping your server as well. You say your are doing what you can afford - obviously you CAN'T afford going out to eat so maybe you should stick with McDonald's or other counter service restaurants where tipping is not necessary. Not sure if you have kids or not, but if you do I certainly hope you do not set the example of being served and not leaving the proper tip.

I'm sorry, I had already answered before I saw your post. I'm really trying to stay friendly, but really this is shocking to me.
Especially since foreigners like me get blamed ALL THE TIME for not tipping enough !

I'll try to keep it civil - or I'll unsubscribe.

They arent gonna die because we only left them a small tip or no tip at all. When I go out to eat, I dont think about tipping the server. I think about spending some quality time with my husband and enjoying good food. When the bill comes, THEN, I think about the tip. I think about how good the food was. How good the service was. I look at all the lil details that most people wouldnt cuz I am a secret shopper. And sometimes I do have to go out to a restraunt.

If I couldn't afford to tip at least 15%, I would go enjoy a meal someplace that tipping wasn't expected, or I would order my food to go and just tip a couple of dollars when I picked it up. We have many times ordered food to go rather than pay for drinks in the restaurant plus tip, which can add up to a lot more. We tip 20% when we go out, though. If we can't afford to tip, we eat at home or Panera or McDonald's or someplace that doesn't expect tipping or call their takeout line and order. I would be embarrassed to not tip or tip a small amount.

Two of my daughters are in college and working as waitresses. I can't believe there are people who think it is no big deal not to tip them.

The Waitress' Tip

When an ice cream sundae cost much less, a boy entered a coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him. "How much is an ice cream sundae?"

"Fifty cents," replied the waitress.

The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied a number of coins in it. "How much is a dish of plain ice cream?" he inquired.

Some people were now waiting for a table, and the waitress was impatient. "Thirty-five cents," she said angrily.

The little boy again counted the coins. "I'll have the plain ice cream."

The waitress brought the ice cream and walked away. The boy finished, paid the cashier, and departed.

When the waitress came back, she swallowed hard at what she saw. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies-her tip

The above story is just a story to illustrate a point. But it's a good point. If you can't afford the tip you can't afford to go out.

:scared1: Sorry, but if you can't afford a proper tip, you need to eat somewhere less expensive.

As for DDP no longer including the gratuity, well it may be a good thing for those who think the DDP is the devil's spawn. ;)

I am sure glad we are going in Oct.
I must say that would certainly make us really think about DDP in the future!
I will keep all our receipts after the trip & do some figuring...
Hope this is still just rumor...
I LIKE the idea of servers truly having to earn a tip....
Having been a waitress in the past, a guaranteed 18% would have been AWESOME, and my personality would never have let me slack, even w/ the guarantee.
And frankly it helps make the DDP one heck of a deal....maybe not so much w/o it....

Same here, I doubt I will use it again after this trip then! :sad2:

I give up on you people. Do I really care if the servers loose money because I didnt tip according to what you say? NO I DONT. Everyone has to pay taxes. Welcome to the world! Your born, you pay taxes and you die. I know that there are other ways to spend time with family, but im not gonna be the one who says no everytime DH wants to go out to eat with just me or with our friends, ALL because I cant afford a decent tip. You have any idea what they would say and think if I said, I cant go out to eat cuz I cant afford a 20% tip? They would look at me like I lost my mind. BUT, WOW guess what? When we do go out to eat, we do tip $5 and that is 20% of tip! And as for the disney trips. The trips to Disney, never paid for 1 excpet for the last one. My sister was the one who paid. So before you go judging me, why dont you sit there and think for a sec that maybe someone else paid for the trip. DH and I have been saving up for this trip for a while now. And Im sorry but we cant just postpone a trip on the fly because we cant afford decent tips. DH is in the military. We are lucky we get to go period! Not just because of money, but because of when he can take leave and weither or not he ends up getting tasked to go on a deployment all of a sudden. So while you people enjoy staying at home all because you cant afford some stupid tip, me and DH will be out, enjoying ourselves out somewhere and leave our $5 tips!

Oh yeah let me just say this again, but its obvious you people cant get this through your heads. When we go out to eat, it cost no more then $25 BEFORE tip. We leave $5 for tip. $25 x 20% tip = $5. Now if 20% isnt enough, how much is? Leave the same amount the bill came to? If you say yes, you people really are crazy.

So while you people enjoy staying at home all because you cant afford some stupid tip, me and DH will be out, enjoying ourselves out somewhere and leave our $5 tips!

Please just don't go where my daughters work! They could be home studying for finals instead of waiting on your table for free.

That makes ZERO sense. Free? Since when does it cost for someone to wait on your table? And since when leaving $5 for a tip is free? Oh so I guess $5 is $0 right? Wow, I didnt know that $5 was $0. And Im in accounting? Maybe I need to go back to school or something.

So why you people enjoy staying at home all because you cant afford some stupid tip, me and DH will be out, enjoying ourselves out somewhere and leave our $5 tips!

Have fun. I personally couldn't enjoy myself knowing I'm ripping off someone who makes 2 bucks an hour.

I really hope that this is just a rumor and that Disney will not really remove the gratuity from the DDP. If they do, it'll be the end of the DDP for us. Som people are already complaining about getting bad service because they are on the DDP (though this is not what we experienced), I don't want to imagine how bad it's gonna be if servers get tipped $2 on a $50 meal.:sad2:

$2 an hr? I dunno what it is over there in Paris, or anywhere else, but here in DE, they get paid $4 an hr and from what I've heard, they are actually supposed to be start making minimum wage here by 2008.

Have fun. I personally couldn't enjoy myself knowing I'm ripping off someone who makes 2 bucks an hour.

:

:sad2: :guilty: I couldn't either. I'd also be embarrassed. If I only had $5 to tip, I'd make sure my order wasn't over $25. If I had to eat the cheapest thing on the menu, that's what I'd do.

"We cant afford to be forking out 15-20% tips on a meal thats gonna cost us between $50 - $100."

Your words.
