We checked into a 1BR at AKV last nite. We have a Savannah view room looking out over the Azima savannah. The view is great - we're on the 5th floor - and we have no obstructions. We have seen Eland, giraffes, wildebeast, Thompsons gazelle, zebra and a number of other animals so far.

Cxheck-in was OK, but we did have about a 15 minute wait arriving at 7:30pm as there were only 2 front desk stations open with a long line. As with reports about BCV - this resort has a ways to go when serving both AKL guests and AKV guests. We have found a number of positives and some disappointments.

Our villa was clean - except for fingerprints on some of the framed artwork in the living room. The decor is nicely themed but has a "heavy" feel to it - creating a crowded atmosphere in the villa. The view is wonderful and well worth the savannah view points. The HD flat screen TVs are wonderful. The granite counter tops in the kitchen are really nice. We like the themed dishware.

Disappointments - the 1BR feels a lot smaller than other DVC resorts - and we've stayed at all 8 now. I suspect this is in part due to the "heavy" furniture but also due to the conversion of the original rooms. There is very little closet space - one front closet which is also home to the vacuum, packnplay and ironing board and a small armoire I the bedroom with 7 hangars total. The BR feels small with the bed, desk and chair in addition to the armoire.
The bathroom was disappointing compared to other 1BRs since there is no separate shower and the jacuzzi is a regular sized tub with air jets and includes the shower head. I realize this will be different in the Kidani units and is different than the models at the sales center but was still disappointing. The fridge is not full sized and has no ice maker. There are e astic ice cube trays in the freezer.

Parks are not crowded now. There are two HUGE cranes at the CR construction site. On the monorail they stated that this is an addition to the CR (no mention of DVC).
We head out on Sat for a 7 nite cruise to Belize and I do not have the laptop on this trip. I,m typing this on a Blackberry and apologize for any spelling errors.
We ran into Jim C in the Hallway here at AKV today - it was good to see him again.

Hopefully the rooms at Kidani will offer a different feel than the Jambo rooms. The sleep-chair is OK but does take up a lot of space in the living room. The extra bath will be nice in the Kidani rooms as well.as the larger bathroom with nicer shower. We will likely try a 1BR again once Kidani opens but won't likely stay at Jambo again.

I will have very limited access until we get home after the cruise and have no way to post photos either until then.

We have dinner tomorrow at Jiko and are looking forward to that event. :)

Yikes! The second report I've seen about lack of space and especially closet space in Jambo. I had already thought that when we can't get club level we'll try for Kidani but this is more confirmation. Will Jambo or Kidani be guaranteed reservations? Oh, Lisa?:listen:

Enjoy Jiko and have a great cruise, Doc.

Thanks for the report Doc. Appreciate your input. According to the member website Jambo House 1 bedroom villas are 629-710 sq. ft. If I remember correctly, that is smaller than most 1 bedrooms at the other DVC resorts.

Can't wait to hear more.

Hi BCV23!! Uh-oh....I'm confused. What do you mean, "will Jambo or Kidani be guaranteed reservations"?

I believe you will be told at the time of making your reservation what building you will be placed in. That building will be guaranteed. I would assume you can request a building when booking your reservation. As long as there is space the CM will place you there.

That is quite a bit of difference within Jambo House considering it is all in floor space. Is that savanna versus standard?

Thanks for the feedback on AKV, Doc. At first I thought you were describing a Value villa, but then I saw you said it was a Savanna view so that throws that theory out.

When we toured the AKV models at SSR, we noticed that it looked like they had put more room into the "living room" and made the bedroom a little smaller. We thought that was a great idea, and were struck by how big the villa looked when we first walked in.

I guess maybe the Jambo House 1BRs are not the same as the models? I thought only the Value rooms were smaller than the models. :confused3

I believe it is value versus standard and Savanna. Maybe Lisa can confirm. Value rooms will be the smallest of the accomodations.

WoodysRoundup, I first typed confirmed but then realized I used the term twice.:rotfl:

For instance at BCV, when you book a 2 BR, you are confirmed in a 2 BR lockoff, 2 BR dedicated with 2 queens or 2 BR dedicated with 1 queen and sleeper sofa.

I don't know the ins and outs of AKV. We did buy points there but only a small addon. I'm hoping that one can be confirmed as in Kidani or Jambo. I think both will have some advantages depending on one's family and vacation habits. But it would be nice to know.

I agree about the closet space. I'm not a big fan of these armoires, especially the ones in the AKV studios that do not have broom closets, where half of the space in the armoire is taken up by the vacuum cleaner, ironing board, etc.

According to the FAQs page on the public DVC website, you will know when you book in which building you will be staying:

Can Members check in at both locations?

Members and Guests will check in at the location at which they are staying. The building in which they are staying will be confirmed at time of reservation.

Yes, where is Lisa? I hope she doesn't think she gets a night off!!!

Granny, the models at SSR are larger than Jambo. Jambo doesn't have the second bathroom, large master bath and the kitchen is configured differently.

That is Value vs non-Value in Jambo House. The 1BRs in Kidani will be larger.

The public DVC website lists the 1BR sizes at AKV as:

Value 1BRs: 629 sq ft
Non-Value 1BRs in Jambo House: 710 sq ft
Kidani Village 1BRs: 807 sq ft

Oh, great news Lisa. Thanks as always!

I suppose I should read the members website more carefully.:rolleyes1

When I toured the AKV models, both units, I really missed having an entranceway. You just walked into the room. It's funny how I could miss such a small area. But I did. The guide didn't even know what I was talking about.

I assume all AKV units will be the same in this regard.

Thanks for the review Doc and have a wonderful vacation at sea,

Lisa

The fridge is not a full size in the 1 BR? So what size is it? The ice maker I can live without.

629 are the value rooms.

710-ish are the standard, savannah, and concierge rooms.

To the previous poster: Yes, Kidani and Jambo will be guarantee's at time of booking. You'll be able to request which one you want, and if there's space, that will be the category you're booked into.

I hope you didn't think that was a dig at you! I try not to be one of those "RTFM" people (and always wondered why people bother responding to a post if all they have to say is "go read the manual"). But I do like to provide my source when I answer a question where I don't have personal experience or posts from other DISers to verify the accuracy of the info. I figure if you know where I got the info, you can draw your own conclusions about its validity. And since in this case it comes straight from DVC, you know it's subject to change at any time! :rotfl:

Oh, I didn't think you meant that at all, Lisa. I really appreciate all your knowledge about AKV and your readiness to share it.:goodvibes

I just don't read the site as much as I probably should although I do constantly check it these days for the waitlist!

I agree with the points that Doc made about the 1BR villa. In addition, seeing as space/storage is at a premium....I question the need for the hallway between the bedroom and bathroom. It seems like a waste of space and could have been designed differently to add more usable space to either the MBR or bathroom or personal closet space. I know it probably has to do with the conversion of the existing hotel rooms.
