Olympus Evolt Series

Hi Ann :wave2: and welcome to the Olympus thread, LOL.

Have you thought about using a filter for daylight?

Lenses are interesting. I was so worried about them before I bought because I didn't know anything about them. Now I'm slowly learning what I like and what I don't. It really does add a whole new element to your photography when you get some specialized ones. (Cha Ching!) I'm pretty much not using the kits anymore since I bought the 18-180 as my walkaround (also off Craigslist for half its original cost, but it is huge also). I'm saving the kits for my DS when he inherits my 510 when I eventually upgrade.

When the opportunity for the Sigma came up, I wondered whether it would be worth it having the pancake (24mm f/2.8) already, but that thought lasted about two seconds when a) the cost was so good and b) I knew I wanted a faster prime anyway. Later I read from other Oly users that these two together are a good pair to have. The pancake is tiny and portable and handy when you want to travel light. And the Sigma is great for the rest.

You'll be happy to know that one of my patients this week recently bought a D60. We were sharing our pictures together :goodvibes and I was able to give him some information about bags, he's going to look at the Crumplers.

I'm a lurker on the Olympus thread, mostly to find out anything of interest for a co-worker that seems clueless about using her camera---but also to see some great shots you guys are able to get with your Olys (Ollies??)

I do have an ND filter, as well as a CP filter now, but haven't put either of them to good use yet. I'm hoping that now that the weather is nice, I'll be able to go out and play around more. You obviously know what winters are like in the good ol' Northeast----depressing, cold and no fun at all!

I like the Crumpler bags. The velcro is SO annoying when you open it, but I feel like it's really secure and I don't have to worry too much about anything ever tumbling out of it. The 6MDH is a little large though. I'll use it to transport my gear in October for our short trip since I'll be traveling light photographically speaking, and then use the 5MDH for actually carrying stuff around the parks.

I'm sure your son will appreciate inheriting your 510. I don't know much about the Oly line of dSLRs, but what would be your next step up and how soon do you think you'll be making the switch?? :banana: :banana: Sometimes I wish that when I upgraded from the D60 to the D90 I kept the D60 as a "back-up", but the money from the D60 was what funded the upgrade and realistically, if you are just a hobbyist---do you even think a back-up is necessary? It'd be nice in case I broke/dropped my camera, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed and praying that won't happen anytime soon.

Anywho, sorry about the Olympus hi-jack. Back to your regularly scheduled programing! ;)

Glad to have you, Ann. I enjoy and admire your knowledge and enthusiasm. :goodvibes If there's anything we can help your coworker with, let us know.

An upgrade for me would be to the E3 or its successor... someday. (See my "Scam" post a page or two back.) I just want to enjoy being able to use my 510 to its fullest for a while (not that I'm there yet :rolleyes: ) before I delve into torturing myself again. :lmao:

My 6MDH is pretty full; bulging, in fact. I'm kind of wishing I got the 7M. Maybe I'm carrying too much stuff around, but I want to have it if I need it, you know? I want to look at a bigger Slingshot than the 100 I have. I kind of miss that a bit.

HELP!!!

Hi all, I need help ajusting my flash on my e410, i've only had it a few month and mostly used it outdoors. Well I was trying to take pics at dinner to night and it does that strobing thing and it is really annoying when I am just trying to take a quick pic. I am in a wedding tomorrow and would love to take it and I know I read before that you can ajust it not to do that. TIA for any help!! PLEASE :)

The purpose of this function is to help assist the focusing in low-light situations. To turn it off do this... with camera on, press the menu button, use the arrow key and press it down 3 times till you get to the little tool w/ the #1, press the right arrow 1 time, now press the down arrow until you get to the AF ILLUMINAT. function, press arrow right and now you can turn it off, now push the okay button. That's it.

THANK YOU :worship: THANK YOU:thumbsup2

I know. And let me tell you, those were some really great fries. :goodvibes

Thanks. Yes, it does, and very quickly, it's nice. (It's huge and heavy though, but that I can live with.) I can't believe how fortunate I was to get it - and ready for this: for $125. I also bought both the FL50 and FL36 flashes for $300 (total) :thumbsup2 all on Craigslist. As my brother says, you've got to be lucky occasionally. I haven't had a lot of opportunities to use the flashes, just the 50 once, and it worked beautifully to shoot my son's baseball team. The guy showed me how to use them but I think it's going to take me a while to figure them out.

I took some more pics with the Sigma this morning, in the rain. :scared: (I haven't taken it off my camera, LOL.) Hopefully I'll have something worthy of posting on the Assignment thread.

Joe, did you get your flash?

ETA Gdad has a Sigma thread going for those with similar lenses.

Yes.....I picked up a slightly used FL36R flash off ebay. I've only just started playing with it but it is soooooo much better than the pop up flash :thumbsup2

Great photos with the Sigma 24mm. Of course you know I want one now :lmao:

Our vacation is 2 weeks away and the work weeks are going soooo slow. I felt it was time to warm up the cameras and have some fun. I took DS to Lake Lewisville for some fishing and took my E1 with me in the tackle bag. Fish were not biting only the ants and some flying insects, also some stink bugs. E1 and 50mm lens

Found the thread on Page 8. A few from Downtown Disney. Balloon ride was fun, but not when everyone goes to the same side of the basket. E1 & 11-22.

Cool pictures! I'm not sure if my nerves would be able to handle a balloon ride... but I do so enjoy looking at them!

My poor little camera has been getting quite the workout recently. I had a photo club assignment (five second exposure), and I did my daughter's senior portraits, and I requested models from among my friends/friend's children so I get some more practice. I'm going to try to earn a buck doing portraits, if I can!

More than anything, though, I've been having a BLAST with photoshop. Here are a couple of my recent creations:

Nice shots, obm! :goodvibes

How was your trip? How did you manage all your camera paraphernalia? How did jsg hold up? :lmao:

I am working on some Niagara Falls pictures but it seems like it's taking me forever.

Thanks! DW wore us out. While we were there for 2 weeks, it passed by really fast. Way too much food! I gained 10 pounds.

I ended up taking both Olympus cameras and the Sony Alpha. Brought more stuff than was necessary. I only carried a camera bag to the parks on two ocassions. The heat and humidity made that decision for me! My primary camera was the E1 with the 11-22. I also carried 1 spare battery, a lens cloth in my pocket and a gallon sized Ziploc bag (for unexpected downpours).

We went to the dessert party at Magic Kingdom on a Thursday night when I decided to use my flash for some photos. All was good until I broke the locking ring on the flash. Now I'm trying to decide to either get it repaired or find some kind of cheap fix.:mad:

I was really surprised that I didn't take as many photos as I would have thought. Now I need the DW's help to load them on to our home computer, they are still in the laptop and Photobucket. I will post more once she helps.

Well, chop chop, then! ALL of our trip photos from all 5 cameras have been burned to DVD and loaded to the desktop. A total of about 1400 in all.

You are so good to him, Elizabeth! :thumbsup2 :rotfl2:

Glad you guys had a good trip. Two weeks would be heavenly!

obm, which camera was your favorite to use and why?

I'm still working on day photos, but here are some of my night photos from Niagara Falls, borrowed from the Assignment thread.

Olympus E-510 and Sigma 24mm f/1.8.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I had a great time taking pictures at Niagara Falls a few weeks ago.
We went in the evening so we'd be able to catch the lights shining on the falls. It didn't disappoint. Very pretty!
This was my set up (first picture was taken with my Canon S3 IS which is now randomly shooting in B&W, LOL).
That mist is amazing!
And a few of the daytime pics I've got done, from the Falls and Old Fort Niagara.
First two taken with Zuiko 18-180 (which I was alternating between protecting under my rain poncho and firing off a few quick shots - it did get soaking wet in the process :scared1: ) ; last three taken with Sigma 24mm f/1.8, which I'm LOVING, btw! :lovestruc
Those are GORGEOUS pics! And yeah, some of those mist pics are a little spooky. :scared:
We didn't have NEAR the rain this year that we had last year, so that was good. From a touring standpoint and a camera standpoint! :rotfl:
Hi everyone-
I'm relatively new to DIS and even more new to Olympus DSLR- I bought an e420 yesterday. I went into the camera shop expecting to walk out with a canon or nikon, but I couldn't believe how much nicer the Olympus felt in my hands.
That said, I'm a little concerned about the lack of IS in the 420. The shop was busy yesterday and the saleswoman that helped me showed me one model, explaining that the IS was built into the body of the camera. Then that model was out of stock, so we switched over to the 420, after she explained they were basically the same.
I probably should have walked out and researched the 420 a little more before buying, but I thought all the Olympus DSLR models would have the same features.
Right now, I'm only using the kit lens and I can really only see myself adding a telephoto at some point (you can all laugh at me claiming that I'm only going to buy one more lens).
I can still exchange within 7 days, so it's probably worth a trip back to the shop, but does anybody have any thoughts on the 420 vs. another model?
I have both the 410 & 510 models. There is more than just IS that separate these cameras. While they are basically the same the model with IS is far more easier to use when changing setting on the camera. The IS model has dedicated buttons for the functions, while the non-IS version you have to go into the menus to change these same functions.
On using a telephoto lens, the more you zoom out, the more you will need IS. It is very difficult to get sharp photos using it hand-held.
IMO, I would go with the IS version.
