I have converted spending money onto the australia post travelex card already for our trip, I have a sneaking suspicion that the dollar will not be this good when we go!

Can anyone suggest anywhere to get some smaller currency? I want to have some small stuff so I am ready to tip etc straight away.

I will just be getting my small cash for my trip from my bank. From what they told me, you just contact them and they order the cash into your local branch, then they contact you to pick it up!

Thanks Jess:) I have been getting my money from the post office and you can't choose denominations there.

No problem, you don't have long now until you leave! Hope you are doing a trip report so I can get lots of tips for my first trip in May!!

I bought mine from online via Auspost and requested small denominations. The smallest denomination was $50!!:lmao:

I also ordered some online via Travelex and there wasn't any option to request. There were a few $20 in the mix. :)

Neither have a fee to buy.

Scrounging around at home I found $5 in $1 notes and a few dollars in quarters so we should be ok to pay and tip for the taxi on arrival.

Check out the below website. Bankwest, you have to have an account with and the banks take at least $10 in fees so are on par with Travelex and Auspost.

Picked up my first lot of cash today. I ordered it on Westpacs website and then paid via Bpay. I asked for mixed and got 3x $100, 2x $50 and the rest was made up of 20, 10, 5 and 1 dollar notes. It was a pretty good mix I thought! Enough to cover those first tips!!!

Paid $600.00 Australian, got $604.00 US:thumbsup2 ( and that included the $4.00 change fee so I was happy with that!!! )

The Auspost lady told me they hope to be able to choose denominations in the future but can't at the moment.

Thanks for the link - that's a handy one for choosing:)

Hubby got ours and he got all $100. i wish he got some $50 notes too. I hate carrying around large notes.

Kids did an awesome job of saving their own holiday money. To ignt has been spent counting coins and working out how much each has saved during the year in their "holiday" moneyboxes. Ever seen anything more excited than a nine year old who has just cashed in before bed time. !!!

Finally made it back to Westpac yesterday to pick up all our US dollars, Canadian dollars, Euros and Pounds. I hadn't seen CAD's, Euros or Pounds before so that was pretty exciting. :cool1:

The smallest we got through Aus Post was $50 notes. Our post office lady said that what many people do when they arrive is to buy something small to get change or find a vending machine that takes notes to get the change.

If you go to Westpacs website, you can buy international currency online. You just enter how much you would like and then it will ask what denominations you would like - Small, Large or Mixed. I selescted mixed and bought $600 worth and got quite a good break down. A couple of hundreds and fifties, but the rest was all 20's, 10's , 5's and 1's. I am assuming if you enter you would like smaller notes it will not give you 100's or 50's. It cost only $4 AU but with the exchange rate, I still got over what I asked for!
You then just select which branch you would like to pick it from and go Bpay it! Mine was ready in about 5 days!

Here is the link if you would like to have a look!

I did the same thing but via the virgin australia website. They use the same company but no fee and you can collect at amex or aus post locations. we got a mix pack which included all denominations but i know in the small mix you only get 1 5 10 and 20s.
