Official Star Wars Weekends 2014 Tips and Tricks

Ok I give up.

Who are these 501st members I keep reading about. Too lazy to google plus I'd much rather hear from some experts on this thread.

oh and great cupcake photo and shots of the private viewing area.

thanks again yulilin3.

and are we sure arriving at 5:30 am is a good plan for an autograph FP? I'm basing this solely on The Sunrise Student's experience with being 2nd to last in line to get one after lining up much earlier in the morning.

btw - I also went right in online after the 7DMT dedication to get FP+'s and had no problems. But only Iron Man has an AP right now. JQ and I are still debating so the schedule reads for a pty of 1. I don't want to risk this with the SWW events and will have to prepurchase some form of tix very soon.
Does anyone know if I can upgrade to a DVC discounted AP if I just buy a 1 day hopper right now?

(I know off topic but hoping someone might know)

The 501st is a group of people who make professional quality "costumes" of various Star Wars characters.

There are a number of different Garrisons around the country of various sizes. I believe the one in Florida is one of the largest. They will participate in different parades in their locale. As well as show up at different charity events and also usually at the regional Comic Convention or something similar.

The New England Garrison iirc has about 75 members. Not all show up at every event. Some of the events I've seen them at are Star Wars night at our local Single A professional minor league baseball team (Lowell Spinners, affiliate of the Boston Red Sox). A popular Halloween parade in our area (they had a life size Jabba the Hut for a few years. And I think a full size X-Wing fighter but I only heard about that. Didn't actually see it), the big Comic Convention in Boston and a lot of charity events.

I believe each member has to make their own costumes. Some members have more than one.

That does not soumd to entirely bad to us. it has been in the lower 50's here. with lower 40's at night. I ready for some warmth and sun.

I could not agree more! Some sun and warmth during this long, cold "spring" is going to feel so nice! Of course, 5 minutes in when I'm dripping sweat, I'll have to remember not to complain!

Yeah remember not to complain :) it can feel nice in the morning, but it's 90 degrees plus heat index and about 80% humidity.....add to that the crowds, screaming kids/parents and stress of some.....ahhhhhh I love SWW ::crazy2: :rotfl:

Which weekend are you coming again? I tried to look for your name in the SWW roll call thread but couldn't find it

Great that there maybe a meet & greet to all going to Feel The Force on 17th..

Will anyone be attending FTF on 16th so I can say hi ??

Just wanted to say how much I appreciate how helpful yulilin3 and others have been on this thread. And not to sound too cheesy, I really appreciate that this thread is so positive- nobody attacking each other or Disney- just helping each other and getting excited about an awesome weekend(s). As a new DISer many threads become more intimidating than informative for me. May the Force Be with you all!!!

First off, you're welcome, I've been attending SWW for about 10 years in a row now and I'm more than happy to let everyone know the ins and outs. It's a huge event and can be intimidating but with proper planning and the right attitude everyone can have fun.
I also love that this thread has remained positive, and we've had this thread for a couple of years now and it's always been like this, maybe something about "The Force" keeps us in a positive mood :lovestruc

Ok I give up.

:wave2: Hi Poison Ivy, I am a future member of the 501st... (will be submitting my costume for final approval this week however I have been "Trooping" with them for some time.)

The 501st "Vader's Fist" was created in 1997, it is a group of volunteers whom create MOVIE QUALITY costumes.

The 501st Troops charity events, museum events, gaming events, any event they are asked for. They do this for free, and whatever money is collect goes to charity! This is a volunteer organization! The members pay for their own costumes, and everything they do is at their own expense. This is done out of pure love... They have a tag line "Bad Guys doing Good!"

But as a DISNEY Star Wars Fan where you will see them the most is during the MOTORCADE :) all those men and women marching is costume by the 100s, they are all 501st and Rebel Legion members (RL is the sister organization of good guys). Everyone of them is there at their own expense, they pay their own admission to the park, their own travel, and lodging... They are there for the fun of it... "To March for the Mouse" as it is lovingly called.

Straight from the 501st website http://www.501st.com/

The 501st Mission:

"...The Legion is an all-volunteer organization formed for the express purpose of bringing together costume enthusiasts under a collective identity within which to operate. The Legion seeks to promote interest in Star Wars through the building and wearing of quality costumes, and to facilitate the use of these costumes for Star Wars-related events as well as contributions to the local community through costumed charity and volunteer work..."

To Promote Interest in Star Wars
While a growing number of people are experiencing a reawakening of their Star Wars fandom, new generations are seeking ways to celebrate their passion for George Lucas's modern mythology. The 501st Legion brings these fans together, reinforcing the enduring longevity of the Star Wars saga.

To Facilitate the Use of Costumes
Some fans are content to collect action figures...other fans want to be action figures. Nothing professes your passion quite like building your own detailed costume replica of a classic Star Wars villain, and there's nothing quite like the feeling that comes from bringing the characters of Star Wars into the real world and sharing the magic with others.

To Contribute
While our organization was founded to simply provide a collective identity for costuming fans with similar interests, the 501st is proud to put its resources to good use through fundraising, charity work, and volunteerism.

I am totally in the same boat! I am a Disney Girl- but SWW is a whole new mountain to climb! Even though I haven't posted much; I have read every single page of this thread. ( I have been literally taking notes in a little notebook!) I would be completely lost without this thread! Thank you to EVERYONE for sharing all of your tips!

Ditto - exactly, even down to the notebook ;)
Thanks for all your helps - SWW is overwhelming for the newbie, but with this post, I am (1) becoming a fan and (2) looking forward to rather than dreading our family trip to SWW :yay:

Agreed for me too!! This is our first SWW and I am overwhelmed, excited, nervous and afraid there is something I am missing. I too have read every page and have a long Word document that I hope to sort through and make into a list with bullet points. This has been the best wealth of knowledge and I am ever so thankful!!!!

those are great pictures. Those are incredible costumes.

I want to book D-Tech for DH but I am trying to decide on a time. We are going on Friday the 6th- and our number one priority is to see the Mark Hamill show. Do we know for sure which show (and time) he will be doing?

Also- I have only been able to book one FTF so far- but I am checking daily to add a second- so I might need to sit and stake out a spot for the parade.
