Pictures of things No Longer Seen at WDW

I miss Pleasure Island, especially the Jazz Club and the Rock N Roll Beach Club. Never did quite get the Adventurers Club. Back on page 29 or 30 someone had posted a picture of 2 boys with Mickey apparently at WDW. However the picture was dated June 1971. If I'm not mistaken, WDW didn't open until October 1971. Maybe early entry or children of someone working for Disney I guess.

Although I do not have a picture, it seems to me that the safety bars on splash are relatively new. About 15 years ago I rode that ride with my 5 year old and was surprised that the handle bar was just that; a bar to hold onto. I remember intertwining my arm and hers and holding on really tight. I feel a lot safer now being able to lower the bar.

They are, but I don't think they're there for safety as much as to keep idiots from climbing out, either for fun or because they decided at the last minute that they didn't want to do the big drop. I never felt unsafe with just a handle bar; it's not like you could fall out, unless maybe you did something stupid like lean way over to the side while going down the big drop.

Moving on to 1997.

Wasn't it beautiful before they built BLT? I'm not opposed to change but this had to be one of the worst. It's by far the ugliest building on WDW property, and of all places, it's in the Magic Kingdom area. Every time we ride Astro Orbiter we're reminded of how spectacular the view once was, especially at night. We stay at the WL now instead of the CR (which we loved) but BLT still looms in the distance marring what was once a lovely view.

So aesthetically pleasing back in the day before that eyesore Tower. Absolutely stunning! And I do remember when all the various recreational activities were promoted as being a part of a WDW vacation. We always stayed off site as a family in the early years for $$$ reasons but I always dreamed someday I'd actually be staying on site! It took me 33 years but my first stay on site was at the Polynesian in 2005!

Wow, I thought I was the only one who thought the Bay Lake Tower was an incongruous monstrosity. If they had built something that fit in better with the Contemporary it wouldn't be so bad but, as it is, it's just plain ugly. I dreamed of staying at the Contemporary from my first trip to WDW in 1972. Finally stayed there in 2011 and absolutely loved it. Thank goodness you cannot see BLT from the Contemporary's theme park view rooms.

That's funny. I always though the Contemporary was a bit of a monstrosity. I actually prefer the architecture of BLT.
