Running costumes

Ok. I'm going to just say it. I LOVE running in costume. When I want to run hard an PR, I'm lucky that I live somewhere that there are tons of local races to do that at. For Disney events, thinking about the running costume helps fill the time during long runs.
So, what costumes have you come up with? What are you most proud of? What didn't work? What are your lessons learned? What are you working on now?

I have several to chose from, but I think one of my favorites was from the DL 2014. I made all the pieces for myself and my two sisters. We live in different counties and different states, so having the three of us together was a HUGE deal. We went with the sisters theme with Frozen. For my preggers sister on chEAR squad I spent $2 on a white hat and added some felt and pipe cleaners and there's Olaf!
DS was coronation day Anna. I found some drifit tanks on clearance at Target for $7 and ironed on the floral pattern. After DScwas dressed we pinned on the green sleeve ribbons. The skirt is just a hand knotted tulle tutu with strips of ribbons painted with Anna's dress design.
For my Elsa dress I just hacked together one of the dri fit tank tops with the bottom of a tael rank top. I sewed them together bad put gold ribbon over it to cover how very uneven the sewing job was. I have a sparkle skirt on under the skirt I made. The cape I just used the pattern from Anna's snow costume but didn't add the frontsistercover.jpg panels to keep it smaller and off my shoulders.
This also is a notable race because it's the first time I have completely run a half. I started as an interval runner, and LOVE it, but this race I was feeling like a super star, and was the first half that I took zero walk breaks and ran the whole thing. I *think* it was because I kept seeing my shadow with the cape flying behind me and I just felt like a super hero!

Fun topic! I have not yet run in a costume (aside from a sparkle skirt once at a small race.) I've been toying with the idea of Mary Poppins jolly holiday outfit but am concerned about a white costume and running (will it get really dirty?/will I sweat through it?), etc. I have a million ideas that basically come down to shorts+sparkle skirt+tank top...just in the appropriate colors of a character...kinda basic but girly. My race only touches Epcot, so I've been leaning towards Epcot characters...like Mary Poppins, Alice, Belle, Snow White...etc.
I'd love to hear people's tips.

I had a hair-brained idea once to wear the old 1980's Epcot style "future" character costume with the silver and rainbows...but I know I'll never actually make it. I wonder if people would even get the reference?

@pxefig those are great! Clearly you put a lot of time and love into those costumes.

I almost feel silly posting these here...I wouldn't consider them costumes, exactly. My style is more to find running clothes that I think sort of represent characters/themes of a race and go from there. Almost nothing is handmade because I am not that creative or talented.

Having that said...I was very happy with my "Minnie" look from this year's marathon. Black Nike tank, SweatyBand (red with white polka dots and a bow printed on it, though you can't see the bow in this picture) and SparkleSkirt:
15654109433_162386afc3_z.jpg

But I think even more than that one, I loved the outfits that my friend and I wore for the 2014 Jingle Jingle 5K. Rather than go the Christmas route, we went with more of a jungle/Animal Kingdom theme.

Doing a bad thing and screenshotting the MarathonFoto window (though I really like this picture and will probably buy it). So...my friend has on a SparkleSkirt (called Everest), and a RawThreads "Believe in Yetis" top. I have a SparkleSkirt (called Rainforest) and that same black Nike tank as above. As for the ears...mine are Minnie ears I bought at Christmas and BFF's are regular black sequined Minnie ears. BFF removed the red bows from both of ours and made us both customized bows to attach to the ears. They both have zebra print (to match the bibs) and mine has blue tulle...but my friend's have fake fur, so hers are way more awesome.

I just love these outfits. :lovestruc

EDIT: Forgot to put what I am working on now. I'm going to actually put more effort in for a few upcoming races...

Disneyland 5K: 2 BFFs and I are going as Mouseketeers. We ordered shirts from Zazzle and I have a blue SparkleSkirt...just need Disneyland ears.
Disneyland 10K: 2 BFFs and I are going as a trio of villains...just a SparkleSkirt and a RawThreads top
Disneyland Half Marathon: The one I am actually putting effort into...60th anniversary Minnie.

For Princess Weekend I have a Daisy outfit almost totally ready to go and am contemplating Flounder as well. That one may be tougher just because I cannot for the life of me find a cheap yellow running top. :confused3

I went as Bonnie from Toy Story 3 for the Tink 10K this year.

My favorite part of my costume was that I was able to make a pink tutu which also worked as a running belt. In addition to the standard directions for a tutu using an elastic waistband and knotted tulle, I added 2 color coordinating neoprene sunglasses cases from the dollar store. They were attached by cutting holes in the back to use to thread the elastic through (neoprene doesn't ravel). They were perfect to carry snacks, a phone and of course, my sunglasses.

I also attached a clasp (repurposed from a lanyard from the dollar store) in a coordinating color so that I could remove the tutu without have to step out of it (which can be a bonus when using porta potties).

@pxefig - I love your costumes and I LOVE this thread!!

I love "dressing up" for things - I think it's a by-product of the six years I spent working in entertainment at WDW back in high school along with being a theatre kid. So, OF COURSE I'm going to come up with costumes! I may obsess over them a little bit TOO much, but ... it means I'm not obsessing over something else that would annoy my husband.

Anyway - I'm working on two sets of costumes right now, so I'll come back and post pictures when I'm done. I've got four (possibly 5! if things work out) upcoming Disney race weekends, so that means lots of costumes to think up!

I love crafting, so I'm lucky to have quite a bit of "technology" already to help me produce this stuff. Like, I do all my own graphics for tanks and then I cut them with my Silhouette Cameo cutter on heat-transfer vinyl (HTV) and then heat press them. I love to sew, so I've purchased one sparkle/sequin skirt just to see how it was constructed and now I make my own. And I'm using my embroidery machine to embroider a "hidden Mickey" on all my skirts. See? Like I said. I need to obsess. And I'm an awful Type-A control freak.

So, here's kinda what I have planned and what I'm working on!

Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend:
5K - "World of Color": pink tech running tee with the Mickey's Fun Wheel Logo, black sequin running skirt with sheer multi-color confetti foil tulle overlay
Half Marathon - Mouseketeer: white tech running tee with Keels on the front and the Mickey Mouse Club logo on the sleeve, royal blue sequin running skirt, Disneyland mouse ears attached to my running hat

Wine & Dine Half Marathon:
Half Marathon - World Showcase Drinking Team Captain: white tech running tee with Country Flag Mouse Ears arranged on the front in order of the World Showcase, on the back in block type it will say World Showcase Drinking Team, a large 15 (think like the back of a sports jersey) and a C on the sleeve with a gunmetal/silver sequin running skirt

Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend:
Since running Dopey is a pretty personal journey to me, I think my "costumes" are going to be pretty personal to me as well. Only longtime WDWers (or my entertainment department friends) will probably get it, but I'll go ahead and explain it here. I will be running in outfits that pay homage to a couple of roles I played in parades at the MK during my tenure there in the late 90's-early 2000's - 'Remember the Magic' and 'SpectroMagic'.
5K - SpectroMagic Butterfly
10K - SpectroMagic Ostrich
Half Marathon - Undecided (narrowing it down from a couple ideas)
Full Marathon - 'Remember the Magic' Parade coach

Princess Half Marathon Weekend:
5K - Undecided ... will probably wait to see the 5K medal
10K - "Rags" Cinderella
Half Marathon - "Riches" Cinderella

Love this thread topic! I do the same thing ~ rD for fun and other races to race.

The costume is my favorite is my Matterhorn one from Avengers that I'm wearing again for DL. I got a white tech shirt from Target, printed out the logo from the sleds for the front and the safety saying for the back to iron on. Then I printed out pics of the monorail, bobsled, Mickey and Goofy climbing the Matterhorn to cut out and pin on to the shirt. I wore it w/ a silver sparkle skirt.

The ones I'm working on now are my 60th themed shirt for the DL 5k. I found a really cool image of the castle for the front and printed out original ride posters for the back. The problem I'm having w/ this shirt is which posters do I want and how big do I want each one to be. I decorated a pair of ears for the 24 hour celebration that I'm wearing too. I'm also trying to make a Mickey Ear headband for my 10k outfit.

For SW, I'm thinking Boba Fett, but probably won't start that until Dec.

I'm planning on the following for the Dopey Challenge (hopefully I can hit my fundraising targets)
5k: full stormtrooper armor (no helmet, they're banned)
10k: DARTH VADER
Half: BOBA FETT
Full: Metal Bikini Leia (yes I'm a guy, I'll make it tasteful)

Haha, awesome. Us guys need to step up like this guy. Unfortunately I don't have any costume skills and find running tough as it is without having a costume on. More power to you.

@Keels - If I had to guess I would think the 5k medal might be Ariel based on the fact that one of the in-training shirts has a seahorse in the background and another has a shell.

I also love the costumes - they're one of my favorite things about Disney races. People are so creative!

My first Disney race was the Royal Family 5K in 2013, and my friend and I just wore Sparkle skirts with black tanks and tiaras, very simple. The Wine & Dine Half 2013 was next and I just wore a Raw Threads shirt and sparkle skirt - I was the Red (wine) Queen. Next race was TOT2014 and I got a bit bolder by creating an actual costume for Megara from Hercules. Then Star Wars Half I was Endor Trooper Leia (another actual costume), and then for Princess Half, I repurposed my Megara costume for Rapunzel, which was my most intricate costume to date, complete with Pascal on my shoulder. That one was memorable because when I stopped to take a photo of the Heroes from the side of the road, Flynn Rider spotted me and shot me The Smolder. Magical runDisney moment!

I've got Dopey coming up and working on costumes, but not quite ready to share yet. Then hopefully Pixie Dust Challenge for Tink weekend (I will be very anxious next Tuesday around noon!). It's so much fun to create running costumes that structurally work, figuring out how to make them comfy and non-chafing, but also easily recognizable!

Planning on running the 5K as Eeyore for the first leg of the Dopey Challenge at 2016 Marathon Weekend. I have less than zero arts and crafts/costume design skill, so it probably won't be the most immaculate attempt.

That will be my first costume. I generally leave those things up to the experts. I have been unwittingly mistaken for running in costume a couple times though. The 2014 WDW Marathon I was dressed in orange and black CEP compression socks with black shorts and a plain orange Nike t-shirt, finished in proximity to two other guys who made legitimate Tigger attempts, and was noted as a "third Tigger" as I was finishing. Then in November 2014 at the Indianapolis Monumental Half I wore a Yoda stocking hat (the only one I could find when packing) along with a green LS Nike running shirt and black tights and shorts. If I were trying for Yoda it would have been an embarrassingly bad attempt, but I heard so many spectators yelling "Yoda" as I was running that it was slightly alarming.

My sister went as Princess Leia for the Wine and Dine half last year- well, it rained the whole race so sweat showing wasn't an issue, anyway :rotfl2:I think The most common think I do for the sleeves on my running costumes is to use a tank top and then sew sleeves onto them but only make them half sleeves where the underarm isn't closed to provide ventilation.

Yeah, for the costumes I sometimes debate over what to be. On the one hand, shout outs on the course are a lot of fun, but on the other hand, the pictures are a lot longer lasting, so at the end of the day I susally decide to go with what I want in pictures most. It's all for myself anyway, right? :goodvibes

@pxefig those are great! Clearly you put a lot of time and love into those costumes.

Don't feel silly posting those! These are great ideas! I always love reading your training journals and seeing the outfit reveal! Those furry Minnie ears are AMAZING
60th Minnie! That's great! Are you doing the diamond collar and all of that?
I did Mousketeer for the marathon- just did a drifit shirt with an iron on and a sparkle skirt. And, as a side note, it was pretty awesome to have a shirt with my name in giant red letters on it for my first full- made it VERY easy for people to cheer for me :thumbsup2

Bonnie! Oh my goodness, that must have been so cute! That idea is genius for the tutu! Going to the bathroom in those things is ALWAYS a major undertaking for me!

How cool to have lived so close to be able to have WDW as a high school job! When I graduated high school, I packed up the car, kissed my parents good bye and moved from Minnesota to WDW. I worked at WDW for a few years before I joined the Navy. Those were some fun times.
Yes, I put a lot of thought into the costumes. It's something to look forward to, and I also keep an eye on sales to get all the pieces an cheaply as possible, so really, I'm saving money by knowing what I want to be way ahead of time, right? I'm so impressed you do your own graphics. I didn't know HTV was even a thing! I'll have to look into that. Iron on has been my standard go to. My friend, Dara, (one of my fellow Mousketeers) has one of those embroidery machines so I think once I had her put "On your left" in glow in the dark thread on the back of my Avengers Half Captain America costume.

IMG_3021 (619x800).jpg
I got started on making my own stuff when I was looking at costumes and tutus on etsy and seeing how expensive they were and I thought surely I could make it myself. So I have started sewing (and running for that matter) because of runDisney. The most elaborate thing I've sewn is the StarLord jacket I did for the Avengers 5k last year. I was in over my head pretty much the whole time. I'm honestly surprised it didn't fall apart when I was running! :lmao:
The Dopey costumes sound like they are going to be pretty fantastic!

I LOVE the posters idea. I could see the debate- if they get too small people won't be able to see them while you are running, but only a couple of large ones might look clunky. Do you have pics of your Matterhorn one? It sounds really cool!

Haha, awesome. Us guys need to step up like this guy. Unfortunately I don't have any costume skills and find running tough as it is without having a costume on. More power to you.
More power to all of us for running, right? I love runDisney for this. I would have never become a distance runner without Disney for motivation! I think the Disney race I have seen the most people dressed up at was Avengers. Seemed like pretty much everyone had at least a super hero shirt of some kind on- guys included!

@Keels - If I had to guess I would think the 5k medal might be Ariel based on the fact that one of the in-training shirts has a seahorse in the background and another has a shell.
Yeah, that was my though too when I saw those in training shirts.

Megara is one of my must-do costumes! I have a whole board on pinterest about ideas for her costume. It seems like it would be a good warm weather race costume since it's pretty much a fancy tank top. Endor Leia- did you wear the helmet? Was it hot? Red Wine Queen- that's pretty darn awesome.
And Flynn gave you The Smolder?! I am so jealous!! Rapunzel is also much most elaborate costume to date. I love love it so much that I pretty much trot out the light up braid all the time. It's been in two half marathons and several run in the dark 5ks. I'd be lying if I said I've never worn it while folding laundry ...

I'm super picky about what I wear when I run, so I'm of the DisneyBound/Character "Inspired" school of costumes.

My plan for the 10K Marathon weekend is Dumbo - gray shirt (I actually have one with a yellow zipper on it) and gray capris, and I'm hoping to make a skirt that's red with a yellow ruffle (not sure exactly how I'm going to do it yet, but I've got a few months to figure it out). And I'll also get either a yellow headband or a yellow hat.
My sister and I are planning to coordinate our costumes for the 5K, but we're not sure what we're doing yet - we've discussed doing either princesses or Mr. Incredible and Frozone, but I'm sure we'll come up with a few other ideas before we have to decide.

That's funny- though I can see how people would do that. One of the cool things about running costumes is that they are usually a hint of a character instead of a literal interpretation

Awww, the Dumbo one sounds so cute

Because I literally cannot make up my mind, now I'm wondering if attempting a Figment for the marathon weekend 5k wouldn't be the cutest thing ever. I'd have to re-do a purple tank or shirt with a dragon belly. Get one of those 80' style crazy figment ball caps with the eyes and ears and some form of purple skirt or shorts and purple socks. I already own purple running shoes. Hrrmmmmmm.
I'd love to pose in front of the Epcot ball wearing that.
I refuse to run with a tail though.

Or maybe I'll just go all silver and BE the Epcot Ball???

I'm super indecisive guys.

I LOVE the Figment idea. I was thinking of doing him if I do the Tinker Bell races since he does have wings too. I was thinking of a yellow t shirt with"Figment" in red and making a lavender tutu and an orange headband. Totally agree about the no tail.
But Spaceship Earth could be a cool costume- a gray or silver shirt with triangles all over it and a silver skirt- easy and comfy!

Pictures? Does anyone have pictures they want to share? I love hearing everyone's ideas and what they have done. I'll share one of mine- I wore this for the 2014 Disneyland 10k. I was pretty chuffed about how it looked like the character while still being comfortable to run in the summer in.

I don't have a picture of it but my friend did figment and had a blast!
