Oh, The Places We’ll Go! From the “stars” to the “sea”: Universal, SeaWorld & beyond - Spring 2016

Okay, so now we need the rest of the story (just so I get completely enlightened now that I feel like an idiot :o ... but don't worry, that happens to me a lot ). Links?

"Oh, the humanity" is a line from the eyewitness radio account of the Hindenburg disaster, a German passenger airship that caught fire and was destroyed during mooring in New Jersey in 1937. The account is very dramatic and became famous, particularly the distressed "Oh, the humanity" line.

This is a link to the wikipedia article. You can scroll down to "News Coverage" and actually hear the account or just read the words:

Does this mean that my trip reports have now graduated from not just entertaining (well, I hope they are LOL!) but also to educational? :teacher:

Those pictures of the lounge and Terrace BBQ area make me long for the free beer pavilion they used to have there...

I can hardly believe they ever used to do that. Here we were excited for the Freestyle machines!! :rotfl2:

Nice report on the behind the scenes tour! We loved it!!! I can't wait to read your review on dining with Shamu. We've been wanting to do it, but were a little nervous about the menu and price. Also, it must be outdoors and we go when it is steamy so not sure we'd enjoy that.

The penguin ride was up and running when we were there two weeks ago so hopefully it's all set now??

We too loved it when it was the beer pavilion. You could also get great carved turkey sandwiches and sit outside on that lovely terrace. I also miss the horses :(

Gina, it's turning into a great(er) day and I am looking forward to read about Dine with Shamu.

Oh, I am glad to hear that Antarctica is back in operation! The summer crowds need that attraction, for sure.

Even though Dine with Shamu is open-air, its cooled at least to some degree. The tables themselves are covered by a roof (so no sun to worry about), and there was definitely some sort of cool air being circulated through the dining area. We thought it was great value.....a fabulous experience (especially for killer whale lovers) and a very hearty meal.

Awesome tour! I so want to do the Sea Lion one.

I never knew they had a pass holder lounge!

Oh, you will have to visit it, then, the next time you are at SeaWorld. It's so fantastically done!

I wish I had known SeaWorld when it had all the great things you guys are rhyming off. They all sound so awesome, I feel like I really missed out!

With a little luck, I should get to the Dine with Shamu portion of this report by the end of the weekend....especially when my partner in crime is away and I have no one to cause trouble with. In fact, this whole report will likely wrap up by next week.....and it will be time to start counting down to October!

Ok, so didn't I just pop in for a minute to give my daily lesson and what do I see.....a pepperoni covered pretzel. Thanks, I was already hungry and I've had the kind of day that I want to throw a brick at someone's head. I don't have time until later tonight to read the whole thing :headache:

Anyway, until later....

Good luck on your interview Tuesday! pixiedust:

The Behind the Scenes Tour looks like fun! My DD LOVES penguins, and she would absolutely love that part of the experience. ::yes::

Those pretzels look so yummy! :thumbsup2

Thanks for sharing the pictures of the Pass Member's Lounge. Those gardens outside are just beautiful!

2 rooms, 2 ROOMS! There was only 1 room in February. :) We had the Pretzel Kitchen when we were there but opted to take the food to the passholders lounge and get our drinks for free. :) I think next time we will just order our food from the lounge. The selections looked good to us, and you know that's rare. ;)

First-Good luck on the next interview-bet you got this all wrapped up:):thumbsup2

Next-WOW on the behind the scenes tour! How cool! I probably mentioned this in another of your trip reports but I LOVE manatees too-spent lots of time in The Living Seas during my CP at EPCOT many years ago.

And when I saw the pic of the Pretzel kitchen menu all I could think of was "hope someone got the pretzel dog"! Mmmmmm,

And your stories of stuffies have stuck with me- Took my middle child to local amusement/theme park (Silver Dollar City, or in the case of when we went for a few hours: "Melt your face" city as it was over 100F heat index) and was waiting for her to get back a drink refill and the family sitting next to me had a 10 or 11 year old girl who had a giant stuffed snake - the body was curled like a spring but the whole thing was still taller than she was. I was chuckling when I asked the dad how they were getting that thing home...one of them was gonna have to be strapped to roof of car :rotfl:. All I could think of was the giant dolphin...

Did you get a photo of the Passholder Lounge Menu? Do you know if they charge (and how much) for non-passholders? I bought an AP, but my niece won't have one I will buy her the 14-day Orlando Flex Ticket.

I hope you ended up getting some pizza therapy before last night was over. I am not ashamed to admit that I self-medicated with a DQ Blizzard and didn't feel one iota of regret :o. Sometimes Fridays just call for drastic measures.

Thank you for the good luck wishes! :goodvibes

I would bet the SW Penguins Up Close tour is one of their most popular (perhaps after the two different dolphin encounnters)....those darling little penguins are so engaging! Keep that one in the back of your mind for your DD someday too :).

The passmember lounge was only the one side in February? I wonder if it has become so popular that they have had to add more space? :scratchin Or if maybe they just didnt have the doors to the second side open when you visited? Maybe because it was a slow park day? (but then again, so was the day we were there......so there goes that theory....)

We were thinking the same thing......enjoy a light lunch in the lounge on one of our days in October. Definitely the most relaxing place to eat in the park, especially if its not super busy. Call me lazy, but I love being served at a table versus standing in the cafeteria-style line ups at the QS locations .

Thank you Monykalyn :goodvibes. I appreciate all the good luck wishes so much!

Believe it or not, that was my first pretzel dog!! (and yep, it only took one to make me a fan :thumbsup2)

It is refreshing to hear that other people have stuffie crisises on their vacations, too....misery loves company :rotfl2:. It's going to be soooooo strange in October with no sledgehammer or basketball winnings to haul home. Steve and I will be poised to fly home with half-empty luggage for the very first time!!! :scared1:

I didn't get a picture of the menu, unfortunately, but I found this one online on another website:

You may be able to bring in your niece as your guest (that would be my assumption), but if you want a more definitive answer beforehand, their Guest Services department are excellent at responding to email inquiries. Fill out the form here:

https://seaworldparks.com/en/seaworld-orlando/Contact/

and you should receive a reply within a couple of days.

If you happen to ask, be sure you pop back here and let us know what they say, as I'm sure many others are in the same boat ::yes::. We'll be having guests with us on one of our SW days in October (Steve's one brother and his family are coming to Orlando for a week while we, too, are in town) so definitely I'd be interested to know if we will be able to introduce them to our perks as passmembers.

Soo playing catch up big time! I was SOOO Close in the guessing what happened to the big dolphin! lol to bad he couldn't pick a couple of the smaller ones to make up for that BIG one! Also reminds me of the time (we all have these stories right?) that we were in Gatlinburg I think with my parents and sis, they had a ring toss game and you could win a giant Odie or Garfield with just 1 ring on the bottle. So ok, hubby is like I'll go spend $5 (err throw away) and we can say we tried. He goes over, throws the first one and ding ding ding, we have a winner. LOL We chose the Odie, he had a long neck, easier to carry around. Luckily we were driving so he sat in the backseat (only had 1 kid back then). Then my mom who is HUGE Garfield friend is like um I need one of those. lol So she gives him money and he spent about $20 trying to win one, my stepdad tried too and no deal. LOL Ah well, she has like 100 Garfields already anyway LOL including big one but not quite as big as the one at the place.

I like Jake even more, he's quoting Nat Lampoon Movies, he's my kinda person! They are my all time fav comedies to watch LOL especially Christmas Vacation - Squirrel!!!!!

So how did the job interview go or is that this coming week? Love all the pictures of the trip and what a cool experience at Sea World behind the scenes! I think I will have to do SW soon, our AP's for USO is expired now, and we aren't doing Disney for like another 2 years due to price for a family of 5! I really need to work on my TR from our May/June Vacation but we have been swamped!

Hey there Frances! So glad to have you back! :goodvibes

I am so glad to hear that someone has actually won the big prize on that pesky ring toss game :p. That game is hard......so much harder than it looks! Steve is already pledging to give it another try at Seaworld in October......the fact that he threw an entire pail full of rings and couldn't come close to hooking one of those bottles is still driving him nuts :rotfl:. (I'm a huge Garfield, too.......I love that fat cat!)

National Lampoons Christmas Vacation is one of our holiday favourites. I think it helps us feel better about our own dysfunctional extended families ;). The humour is a little crass but its a hoot nonetheless. We have watched it so many times, we can recite the script virtually verbatum.

My next interview is Tuesday at 11 am......hopefully this will be the last one. It's been a long process for sure. I feel horrible sneaking around behind the backs of my current employer; like a disobedient teenager slinking out the window after their parents are in bed :guilty:. Keeping this secret is killing me....but yet, having to give my two weeks notice will be even more painful. Calgon, take me away! :scared:

Edited to add....if SW is on your family agenda, consider picking up the BOGO annual passes on Black Friday, if the budget allows. I know your odd number doesn't make it quite as spectacular a value, but getting two of your five for free is a pretty sweet deal!

I'm pretty sure that is the old passholder lounge menu- they have an order of a dozen mini cinnamon donuts now! I will try to grab a pic the next time we visit.

Monday, May 2nd: more SeaWorld

No visit to the park is complete without a ride on Manta. They guys stomachs had settled enough to be ready for the intensity of the coaster, so off they went. Here is where Quick Queue is a beautiful thing: in mid-afternoon, they were able to walk right on with their front-of-the-line access :thumbsup2.

LOL on Steve’s face in that ride pic …..he looks bizarre :crazy2:.

While the boys were enjoying the coaster, I perused the general area and somehow found myself standing in front of here……and drooling :cloud9:. The smell emanating from that little shop was enough to kick-start anyone’s saliva glands as they pumped out fresh waffle bowl after waffle bowl. I think I may have just found my dream job!

When the guys met up with me after their ride, I innocently :littleangel: tossed out the suggestion of ice cream and both were quick to whoop their approval. They happily followed me over to Manta Soft Serve to peruse their options.

I just noticed now…..they had Pineapple and Pineapple Twist (I didn’t even see that when we were there!!). SeaWorld’s answer to the Dole Whip, perhaps? :scratchin We may have to give that a whirl in October, for quality control and research purposes, of course ;).

Jake opted to get his beloved Dippin Dots from one of the nearby kiosks…….why that child would pass up Manta soft serve for Dippin Dots, I have no idea :confused3…..so he dashed off while Steve and I placed our order. Since we had a big dinner on deck and didn’t want to be too full to enjoy it, we decided to share a Shamu Brownie Sundae rather than get individual cups, floats or bowls. We had learned at Christmas time that this place thrives on both quality AND quantity: portions are massive, so small stomachs....beware!

This was so delicious and so fun . Two massive hunks of brownie, a ton of vanilla soft serve, hot fudge sauce, whipped cream and a cherry all served in a souvenir Shamu bowl (yep, you get to keep it!)….and it was more than enough for the two of us to enjoy together. At $6.99 less the pass member discount, I came to a crazy affordable $6.70 with tax: worth every penny and then some (Jake’s 12-oz Dippin Dots, in comparison, were $8.51 with tax). And that Shamu bowl? I use it all the time at home.....and it makes me smile every time I do :).

Refreshed from our cool ice cream treat, we moved onward to Journey to Atlantis so they guys could snag another ride on a park favourite.

While they rode, I stayed out of the sun and enjoyed the cool comfort and marvellous marine life inside the Golden Seahorse Gift Shop and Aquarium :fish:.

Slow day at the park that it was, I almost had the place to myself. It was nice to have a few moments of quiet reflection as I admired the fish and sea creatures showcased in each tank.

Since I had a rather impressive stuffie haul from this trip already, I resisted the urge to purchase one of the cuties that they had on display in the gift shop. I might not be so able to employ my reserve in October, though……especially for those sharks. They are just too adorable with their toothy smiles :teeth:.

Once I mentally calculated that the guys had had sufficient time to get through the queue and board a boat, I emerged into the blinding sun to see if I could capture a picture of them as they plunged down the big drop. I missed the swoosh of their boat, but I did capture them just as they floated by…..they were quicker than I had thought they would be! Thank goodness for ride photos ::yes::.

I headed around to meet them at the ride exit, where we had their picture added to our Photokey account. This time, no one’s outstretched hands were covering Steve’s face, and they both managed a perfectly executed salute for the photo. What a pair of clowns :p.

After Journey to Atlantis, the boys made a beeline to the queue for the mighty Kraken.

Steve’s expression makes me wonder if the Shamu sundae might not have been a good idea after all! :rolleyes1

Somehow, despite our winnings of the week already necessitating the purchase of a whole new expandable suitcase just to ensure we could bring home Radioactive Man and his Minion cohorts, after riding Kraken the guys somehow managed to convince me it was a good idea to play more games. I suspect that Steve was feeling bad that I was waiting in the hot sun while they rode a couple of rides, and wanted to win me a new friend as his way of saying thank you. I think Jake just wanted to see if he could win another giant dolphin :rolleyes2.

Steve tried his luck at the Kraken plinko game, but didn’t hit any of the big numbers. For his efforts, he still won me a little blue crab (the “small” prize). The sledge hammer game is definitely where his luck lies!

Jake tried to repeat his golden moment of the morning, but thankfully (mercifully!) there was no big win at the Kraken Dunk.....he blamed it on heat exhaustion . He did manage to sink one ball in the net and took home another purple flying unicorn-type stuffie as his prize. He gave it to his Momma, too.....thanks Jaker .

From there, we headed back toward the waterfront and opted to catch a ride on the air conditioned SkyTower.

The ride was a walk-on with our Quick Queue passes (and even just a very short wait without), so after stopping for a Photokey picture we were on our way up, up, up into the air.

The perfectly clear, sunshiny day made for spectacular views once again :sunny:. We each quietly soaked it all in: I sensed that we were all a little introspective. I found it oddly fitting that our last SeaWorld ride of the trip manage to “summarize” every little aspect of the park.

Hey look! We can see where we would be Dining with Shamu! :magnify:

Bayside Stadium:

The park is closer to the Orange County Convention Center than you might realize.

After disembarking from the Skytower, we finished the last of our souvenir shopping at the Waterfront shops, and with our purchases and stuffies in tow, it was time to head over the bridge toward Shamu Stadium. Ever notice how much longer this walk feels when your legs are aching and it’s so hot you think you might melt into a sweaty little puddle right there in the middle of the bridge?

With just a few minutes left before it was time to check in, we popped back to the Pass Member Lounge for some cold drinks (the Coke Freestyle machine can quickly become a person’s new best friend on a steamy hot day), and then it was time...........

The“grand finale” of our SeaWorld day, Dine With Shamu, is next.

I'm pretty sure that is the old passholder lounge menu- they have an order of a dozen mini cinnamon donuts now! I will try to grab a pic the next time we visit.

Awesome, thank you! I would be interested to know what items are currently being offered, too :thumbsup2.

Be honest now....there was nothing innocent about suggesting ice cream.

That pick of Shamu Stadium makes it look really small. Where do they keep Shamu and his friends because you can only see that one pool?
