The Running Thread - 2016

This is why I think they are overhyped, or I just haven't figured them out yet: "Take a SPIbelt™ on your run, hike, bike, or travels without distraction, bulk, or bouncing." :confused3 And I assure you, I have plenty of padding on the back end, so to speak. ;) I think I just haven't figured out the perfect sizing/location on where to wear mine...that or it's just not for me.
I think maybe they were better before phones got bigger. :) I originally got my SPIbelt back when I had an iPhone 5s, which was a lot smaller than my current 6s (not even the Plus version). I did not have as many problems with it flopping around then as I do now. I can't even imagine putting a Plus in there.

QOTD: Do you have or had a piece of running gear (could be shoes, clothes, hydration system, lights, fuel, ect.) that you heard great things about and tried out, only to find that it simply just did not work for you?

ATTQOTD: Totally agree with @LSUlakes on the Hoka hype! I think I've tried every model they make and they just plain suck for me, lol!

>>> The weather forecasts from Weather Channel and Accuweather for WDW weekend are (as a runner might describe them) wildly off from one another. Weather.com has what could be considered a near nightmare scenario. The Accuweather forecast approaches ideal conditions for attempting that time goal during the big one. Thoughts?
I've been watching them, too, and as a Floridian it's concerning: the two are usually starting to come together by now. When they continue to differ a week or so out like this, it generally means a front is expected... but no one's got a handle on how strong (cold/wet) it's likely to be, or on when it might arrive, or how deep it's likely to plunge into FL. So I'm basically planning race outfit variations for every possible scenario!

So far, the SpiBelt I got at Wine & Dine. I think I haven't figured out the exact magical "setting" I need for it, because the thing rides up and moves around like crazy. :confused3 Also HammerGel...the texture was so disgusting I almost tossed my cookies.

I wear my spibelt religiously except on treadmill runs. Will say I only carry my iphone and maybe salt tabs / honey stingers in them. If they get too bulky, I find they bounce a lot. So I wear my key in a zippered pocket.

Are you using super glue or something similar to glue it together as you go?

Just the thought of gluing it makes my heart hurt! Enjoy it now and then pack it away carefully when you're done enjoying and wait for it to appreciate. I had one of the UCS Millennium Falcons without a box a few years ago and still sold it on CL for triple retail at below market value prices!

I've had 3 pairs of Hokas,a Stinson trail,a conquest and currently a Clifton 3.The Stinson trail was a bit heavy but overall I loved that shoe,my first race with the Conquest for whatever reason I had a pain in one ankle, the fit of the shoe combined with the way I was running was for whatever reason bothering my ankle.I totally quit using that shoe in races and bought a pair of Asics with much less cushioning but I knew I wouldn't have the ankle issue since the shoe was much lower and didn't touch the ankle.I still wore the Hoka conquest on shorter runs and eventually a couple of half marathons,I guess it just needed more break in time and for me to get used to it.My current Hoka Clifton 3 is the lightest and best fitting of the three Hokas,I've run 2 halfs and a full with them and even though I stunk up the full it was lack of training which had nothing to do with the shoe. One thing I will say about Hokas, once you get used to the cushioning its tough to try on another brand with less cushioning and tell yourself you prefer it to the Hoka.I know for some people Hokas are just not going to be their thing, maybe the shoe is to tall or whatever but for me as long ask find one with a good fit the cushioning just adds an extra bounce in my step and makes me want to go further.

Are you using super glue or something similar to glue it together as you go?

No glue here. We have the Tower Bridge that we finished earlier this year, and we didn't use any glue on that either. I figure we may want to deconstruct at some point… especially if we keep on building these larger kits. I'm worried that we will eventually run out of display room.

My only running related gift was my coffee maker! But I gave my husband some new socks, new running shorts and some sports beans.

I bought a roo pouch and I didn't care for it. Lots of bounce. I also didn't care for nuun. I liked the flavor and all, but it didn't help with my spasms the way Gatorade does. And it sprayed out the top of my water bottle and hit the guy on the treadmill next to me.

ATTQOTD (gifts): I got a new car in November so Christmas was pretty light for me, but I did get some new running socks and a pair of winter running pants. The best gift though was surprising my girls with a trip to Disney next week for Marathon Weekend. Their reaction and genuine excitement and appreciation has been awesome!

ATTQOTD (stuff not working): For the most part I can make anything work, I tend to use things I get until they simply fall apart and as an old school runner don't have a lot of tech gadgets. So I struggled with this question. But if I had to select an item I regretted purchasing it would be my Altras that I bought a year ago last spring. They were horrible and left me with achilles tendinitis. It start as my fault, tried to do too much too fast with the shoes. But even after healing (which took a few months to feel strong again) when I tried to ease into the shoes the pain would simply return. Ultimately I just decided to stick with the Brooks I had been running in before and have not looked back.

ATTQOTD: ever since my first Ironman I refuse to pay full price on stuff at the finisher tent because it's just too damn expensive. I like some of it, I just can't justify the cost. In any event, the wife waited till the Ironman Store had a 40% sale and hit me up with this years finisher jacket and polo.

Off topic...who was it what was talking about how to use bluetooth headphones at the the gym on the treadmill. I got a git card as a gift as well and may try a pair of bluetooth headphones but being able to hear the TV at the gym would be a preference.
