Is there something you wished you had known the first time you went to Universal? Something you just have to ride or just have to eat? All the tips and tricks to make the trip go easier? I feel so under-planned. I am so used to make reservations for everything at WDW I am freaking out about forgetting something. We are a family of 4 (Mom, Dad, and 17 year old twin sons) We are staying at Royal Pacific, and quick service dining +unlimited drink deal. Help calm me down please :)

When are you going? That makes a difference.

Honestly, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. You can just go and do as you want, when you want.

Next Monday - We are driving down from Ohio, and staying nearby the first night. - we have 3 nights, 2 day 2 park passes ( I want to do to Disney Springs and we have a reservation at BOMA for my husband) I am trying not to worry, but I even overplan for Kings Island and Cedar Point.

Damo is spot on. With a Universal vacation, you can relax. You don't have to plan minute by minute like you do with WDW.

I am on my way home now from a 10 night stay at RPR. there is very limited quick service there, so just be aware of that. However, City Walk is a 10 minute slow stroll away and there are plenty of options there, as well as in the parks.

My favorite quick service restaurant is in IOA by Jurassic Park. I think it's called Terrace Falls (or something close to that). They've got great ribs.

Have a wonder trip!

I would watch the first Harry Potter movie tonight, with the family.

As a first timer, you really can't go wrong. Just go with the flow. I recommend using the early entry pass to do the Harry Potter world, it gets really crowded.

I hope you have a great time!

My best piece of advice: Just go and ride what you want, when you want, all the times that you want! Universal is such a freeing experience after being at Disney!

Hi :goodvibesI have to agree with previous posts it is so much more relaxing than Disney. The Express Pass that you are going to get with staying at the Royal Pacific is great. Once you get those it is hard to tour a park without them. I went to Cedar Point twice last year (favorite amusement park) but to get their fast lane express is very costly. Here the express pass is right in your room rate so you don't think about it. The hotels are really worth the price. Universal does a great job with them.

As far as tips if you get really motion sickness and want to take something before a ride I would think about these two the Simpsons, Forbidden Journey. Honestly I like all the rides in both parks and you will be able to do it with the couple of days and express pass. There are a lot of great trip reports on this site and I would scan them. We have been to Universal many times and I always learn something new form other people. I will say the Harry Potter worlds in both parks need to be done during early entry or later at night. The Express Pass won't work on those rides and the areas can get very crowded. Especially Diagon Alley in the Studios. Take your time in these areas they are absolutely amazing and there is so much detail in them.

Our favorite rides in the studios is The Mummy and Transformers and Rip Ride Rocket.
Our favorite in IOA is The Hulk and Spiderman.

Any other questions please ask:thumbsup2

Easily overlooked (we missed it on our first two trips) but definitely worth seeing is the Hollywood Horror makeup show.

IMO the best show in the park but many end up skipping it.

Also easily overlooked as many are making their way into or out of Hogmead is taking some time to interact with the Fountain in the Lost Continent.

You can totally relax with universal express pass and go with the flow. The one tip I wish I had known is that you will get soaked on the water rides (especially blutos barge, Jurassic park can be a big splash too). I cannot describe how wet we got on blutos- we didn't fully dry after 4 hours in the fl sun. We ride all the water rides now right before we take a mid day break and then change (your hotel is about 15 minutes from park entrance to hotel via boat) so we took the 45 minutes out of the day to change.

We talked about listening to the first book on our long drive down.

Thank you - I hate walking around in wet close.

What time should be try to be at the park in the morning for the early entrance to HP - 7:30-7:45ish. Where would be a good place to get breakfast after we take advantage of the extra hour?

I worry about stretching yourself too thin by doing Boma and Disney Springs. We did a 4 night, 3 park-to-park day plan staying at Cabana Bay in summer of 2015 and I didn't feel like we had enough time to go to Disney Springs let alone a dining reservation on Disney property. We never left Universal but we did quite a bit of relaxing at the resort. Maybe just make sure you do early mornings so have as much time as possible at Universal :)

We only have a 2 day ticket - Our plan is Monday - drive from Ohio and checking to nearby hotel, Tuesday - check into Royal Pacific and go to Disney Springs /Boma 5:45, Wed and Thur - early entry Universal days, Friday - check out to go to Cocoa Beach/ beach time or Cape Canaveral , Saturday- beach or Cape Canaveral, Sunday start home - taking 2 days.

I could skip Disney Springs - I am not a big shopper, but I want a little bit of WDW and I need some new Mickey jewelry

Honestly, when I am there I get to the gate about 7:15 for EE. I do go later in the summer and being closer to the turnstiles makes a difference. If your there by 7:30 should be good. Honestly, there are not a lot of places for breakfast. You do have the Harry Potter restaurants have breakfast (Leaky Cauldron) and ( Hogsmeade) However, people like the Crescent Moon Bakery which also has sandwiches. Of curse the Harry Potter restaurants will be more. I would look at their menus before you go to have a plan. We would grab some oatmeal from our little store in Hard Rock or we brought bakery items at the store to eat in the morning on the way. We would bring some snacks in and then do an early lunch.

I will be going the end of July and am getting so excited helping other people with their trips.:goodvibes

I think we will pick up something the night before that we can have for breakfast in our room, so I can get everyone moving. :yay:

I agree with so many of the the posts already, especially about the Fountain in IoA (Lost Continent area) and the Horror Make-Up show in Studios.

Things I personally wish I knew: the big pink donut (Simpsons and a few other stores) is huge, tasty, and a good price (around $5) and I wish we knew about the secret songs and how to pick them on Rip Ride Rocket (discovered that secret a couple of years after our first trip.)

I agree with all of the above and have a few things to add...

You should know that there is no Express Passes (EP) for Forbidden Journey, Hogwart's Express, and Gringotts. For the best chance at doing those with short lines, use your Early Park Admission (EPA) that comes with the resort stay.

Speaking of Hogwart's, it's a different experience in each direction, so, if that interests you, plan on riding it at least once in each direction. You need park to park tickets to ride this, so you are covered there.

Since you have park-to-park tickets, if you want to switch parks, you can take Hogwart's or walk. If you walk, as soon as you exit the park, take the path towards Toothsome - rather than walking over the bridge. Walk past Toothsome to the other park. It'll save you some steps and time.

For EPA - make sure everyone takes their room key with them to show. Sometimes they will only check one, sometimes they want to see all of them.

Get some lanyards with the plastic, zip-type pouches. To save some money, get them before you go. You'll need to carry at least 3 things with you: room key, park pass, and express pass. The lanyard makes it easy.

Your room key will also get you priority seating at most restaurants. Just ask if they have priority seating for hotel guests and if they do, show your room key.

Don't forget about City Walk for meals, even lunch. We probably eat there for 90% of our meals.

Express Pass is fantastic! The one 'down side' is that you might miss a good queue or a queue that gives you the story of the ride. For example, we rode Mummy a ton of times using Express and loved it, we just didn't quite understand what was going on with the story. One walk through the main queue and we got it. Some other queues that might be worth it if the line is short - Men In Black, Kong, and ET (we've never done it, but have heard some say it's their favorite). If waits are long, don't worry about it, you'll still enjoy the rides.

Do NOT mistake Rip Ride Rocket for a ride with an interesting, or otherwise important, queue! ;)

The walk from Royal Pacific to City Walk is a nice walk. We don't do it often, since there will be plenty of walking in the parks, but it is a nice, quiet, change of pace.

The boat service is so easy. We do EPA, eat lunch in City Walk, then head back to the hotel for a mid-day nap. Then we go back to the parks for a few hours before dinner.

As @gotomu212 said, that's also a great way to plan the water rides. Hit them all in a row (they are all in the same area of IOA), then head back to the hotel to change.

One difference from Disney - a lot of the rides at Universal do not allow you to carry on items. For some (Hulk, Dragon Challenge, and Rip Ride Rocket), you have to completely empty your pockets. Free lockers are provided near the rides.

The exception to the 'free locker' rule is the water rides. They do not make you store your stuff, but if you choose to, those lockers have a fee.

Last thing you should know - staying on-property at Universal will completely spoil you! Simple transportation to the parks, early entry, and - the piece de resistance - Express Pass are simply amazing! We can't go back to Universal and NOT stay on-site.

If you plan to do volcano bay, do park opening and leave by noon. Express pass doesn't work here, and ride wait times get rediculous. We usually leave VB, get lunch at toothsome- not quick service, but you should eat there anyway, portions are large and can be split- and then head to IOA or US. Start away from Harry Potter, do everything else with your express pass, and then head to HP after 5. All the rides should have a 45 minute wait or less by this time. When doing the train, sit away from the window, it's hard to focus when you're next to it.

Will the lanyards be ok on rides? We will have the refillable cups too. Thanks for all the information :)
