With Galaxy's Edge coming... what will happen to Star Tours?

I wouldn't expect them to touch any of the Star Wars-themed attractions currently in the park until well after SWGE opens. When it opens, there will be a massive influx of Star Wars fans, giving DHS a major need for both as much capacity and Star Wars theming as possible. Once the initial hype dies down a bit (maybe around 2021), I would expect to see all of them replaced or rethemed.

I'm going to agree with this. Everything major that is happening in DHS is going to be done by the opening of SWGE. And then it's going to have to hold, at that status, until the crush starts to dissipate in a few years. There just won't be the capacity otherwise. That is why TGMR is being shuttered now, in a park that can ill afford to have it closed. It's to have everything, absolute max capacity, up and running when SWGE opens. They aren't going to pull a people eater like Star Tours unless it can be done before that happens, and with the planned updates, it doesn't appear like they are choosing that option. I think Star Tours will be running until 2022. I do think it is inevitable it gets re-themed, but either that happens before SWGE opens, unlikely at this point, or not until well after.

I too agree. Until SWGE opens, and has been open for a year or so, I don't forsee any changes to StarTours or any other space in DHS.

I wonder what kind of EMH we will see at DHS, unless they decide not to do them for some reason. If anything probably the same as AK 11pm-1am.

honestly yeah even the launch bay and all that will probably stick around for a while after star wars land opens to deal with overflow crowds. i still don't see any reason behind closing star tours, but admittedly the area where it and indy sit now would be prime material for a new land--i'm sure they could come up with something amazing, and in that case i wouldn't mind losing star tours. i just hope they don't mess with echo lake because that'd get rid of the giant hidden mickey

It seems obvious that Star Tours will be going away, but also a mistake that there are only 2 attractions in the new land. Seems like more of a "mini" land to me. It would have made sense to at least relocate ST to the new area.

ya . I am shocked the land didn't have room for Star Tours in both Disney World and Disneyland.

Honestly, I am more surprised that they just didn't just put Galaxy's Edge in the area that Indiana Jones, Star Tours and Muppets Courtyard are in and just build around Star Tours .. leaving the building in place (like they are doing with TSMM and Toy Story Land).

In terms of sheer numbers, I'm just really unhappy with adding 2 new Star Wars rides while losing one at the same time crowds are sure to peak. But I'm sure Disney will be loving it. They seem to have a hard time adding without also taking away.

I'm pretty convinced the studios will regularly close to capacity when Star Wars opens. Which will mean the park will be uncomfortably crowded and lines uncomfortably long. Just walking around there in its present form tells me that they're gonna have issues

Imagine if they had plunked it down in the MK. Which is essentially what they are doing at DLR. :faint: It really has the potential to ruin that park for me.

We'll probably swap back to WDW then so at least we can avoid the Star Wars park if we prefer.

I don't think lack of space was the reason for not bringing over Star Tours. Originally a much less ambitious Star Wars Land was planned for that area, fortunately that plan was scrapped. If they had wanted Star Tours to be part of the land in DHS they could have left Galaxy's Edge where it is and sacrificed the Muppets are to link it to Star Tours.

I have no idea if this would be feasible at all, but another option potentially could've been to build an underground tunnel from SWGE to Star Tours that goes under Muppets Courtyard. Then they could theme the outside of Star Tours to fit in with its surrounding area (Echo Lake or whatever becomes of that area), as there would be no ride entrance from that location, while the inside could remain the same. Maybe they could turn the tunnel into a new elaborate queue that could help try to tie the ride in with SWGE. The "Star Tours" sign would go at the tunnel entrance, as that would be the only way for guests to access the ride.

I'm actually kind of glad they're only putting in two attractions at the start. This gives them the opportunity to tie a new attraction into a future Star Wars movie and potentially take advantage of more advanced technologies without having to retheme or teardown an existing attraction.

It's the same reason that I believe Disney running out of money on Pandora will wind up being a blessing in disguise. Now they can add an extraction that will tie into the slew of Avatar sequels coming out over the next decade.

It's Florida you are barely above see level and the ground more than 2 feet down is all sand there would be no possible way to build a tunnel especially under the foundations of other buildings

I don't see them changing Star Tours
1) It's your best IP
2) It's still popular
3) They've put money into it in recent years
4) who cares if it's not attached to SWGE, it's about the whole trilogy where SWGE is just the new one
5) Why spend the money
6) What else would they put in there?

I don't recall where I was reading, but I'm thinking some reliable insiders are pretty sure it will be going away. I'd love if it didn't though.

It doesn't fit thematically anymore. It's not connected to SWGE. It's bound to be changed to something else. You could put almost any IP in there. Hong Kong's version is based on Iron Man.

I've had this exact thought about DL. Its such a small park to begin with...it does have tons of attractions to keep guests occupied, but in terms of just being able to simply enjoy the park and grab a snack - yikes.

It is a myth that you can't build underground in Florida, you can, it's just difficult.

1. There will be a whole new immersive land next to it with the same IP which will have a new state of the art simulator ride.
2. We will see once Star Wars Land opens.
3. The recent changes to tie it in with the new movies probably weren't that expensive and were also marketing tools for the new movies. If it does close, the Adventure Continues version will be over 10 years old.

5. This could be said about anything.
6. It's a pretty flexible ride system, you could do a lot of things with it.
