I missed the SW 60k offer

Hello all,

I've followed this thread and I think I understand the strategy but I believe DH and I are out of luck. I already had both the SW Plus and Premier, so DH applied for both in September when we saw the 60,000 point promotion. I SM'd Chase today and the rep told me our MSR is December 26, 2017. Sounds like we are not going to be eligible for the CP in 2018 and 2019, only 2018. The 120,000 points will be nice, however.
You should be ok. You just need to wait for your Dec statement to close and then complete the spend before 12/26 and it will go on your Jan statement. So my payment date is 11/26 and 12/1 which means my Dec statement closes 12/1 and 12/4. I then have until 12/25 and 12/28 to meet my spend which I will do mid Dec. Shortly, after 1/4, I’ll have 120k+ points and CP! My plan is to leave at least $500 to spend on each card so that I’m not too close to the MSR and they decide to be generous with the distribution of the points and award them early.

I have been trying to follow all this but have succeeded in confusing myself. Yes, it has been a long day. I have two card and will get my first 60,000 on Nov 4th. To get the companion pass for 2018 I have to get the miles onto the second card by the end of 2017? If I reach the spend amount is there anyway to get them to post the miles right away. Paying them online would work for me if they would post the miles in 2017. Thanks, you all have some great advice.

Yes, kind of. Youwill need to get the other points completed before your Dec statement closes which is probably late Nov/early Dec so they will post in Dec. It depends on your payment date. Take that date + 3 days to it. If it is the 26th, it becomes the 1st, 27th is the 2nd.

I'm definitely not as well versed as others on when to finish spend and things like that but I have read some people have SM'd chase to request the the date of their billing to be changed. I don't know if this would change your situation but it might be worth asking. I have found Chase to be wonderful to work with. Your date of points earning may be more related to the billing date than the end of the MSR. You might be able to complete your MSR by 12/26 and not be billed until after 1/1

When I checked earlier this week, the best card deals were down to 40000 RPs. This morning (10/11/17), it looks like the 60000 is popping back up. Did it ever actually go away? Do they ever offer the deal just on random days, or will it probably be back up for a while?

The deal is not back. The public Chase link is currently 40K for the personal cards and 60K for the business card as opposed to the 60K deal for all cards that ended last week. As was stated previously in the thread, once a deal is dead, there are occasionally links that still survive for certain promotions. I don't know if that is the case here as I haven't searched for any and have no idea what you are referring to. When a promo deal is offered it is not typically offered on random days but usually for a range of time.

try clicking on apply. sometimes the deal will still show but application will error out.

Just read that Southwest is going to start service to Hawaii once the 737Max gets FAA approval for long over-the-water flights (next year). Woo hoo! That will be an excellent use of my points and Companion Pass :)
I was so excited when I saw this on FB last night!! I thought the same thing--great timing with all of the new points and CP! I live in CA, which I believe is where all flights will originate initially.

I probably won't have my cards, and therefore my points for several weeks yet, so I started looking at alternate flight availability in case my desired "first day of vacation" flights were gone by then . It turns out that by flying the day prior to the first day of my resort reservation, the tickets are 2000 points less. Including the companion fare, there's a chance I can fly my entire party of 9 roundtrip for free (with hopefully a "cheaper" hotel reservation for that first night). What a great promotion!

SW's flight prices and point requirements can change daily, but you're right, sometimes a day early can make a big difference. Sometimes flights are actually booked by larger groups thereby commanding higher prices for the last few remaining seats, but usually it's just posturing by SW. I went back and counted and since the time I reserved my November flights back in May, I have changed the flights to obtain a lower point requirement 15 times and we still have a month to go. Last year it was 18 times. The flights started out around 32K points round trip per person and I'm now around 14K round trip. This is the current SW business model. I believe one of the reasons they do it is to catch the people paying with cash versus points so if they happen to modify to a lower price, they have the funds locked up for no more than a year for a future flight in hopes they never use them.

When you change with points can you just change or do you have to cancel and rebook? If so can you book first then cancel the original? Just wondering if you need to worry about it becoming unavailable in the short time between when you cancel and rebook. Maybe I worry too much!

I recently read that when SW update their booking system last spring, it affected what happens when you change flights. If you're booking with points and need to change a flight, you are now given a travel voucher for the tax portion rather than having it refunded to your credit card. Honestly, I'm not sure how that works; I only just read this and have changed multiple flights since this went into effect. If you change a flight, I don't know if SW automatically applies the tax from the previous booking. I assumed so as I am pretty sure I remember seeing '$0' in the amount owed. http://dealswelike.boardingarea.com/2017/05/13/not-change-southwest-flight/

I just changed my flights to Punta Cana yesterday. The system automatically applied the tax and early from the original flight and 2000+ points that was less were immediately deposited back into my RR account. I did have to call SW to have them switch DS’s CP flight. She told me I could cancel and rebook but since that would have lost the early bird funds, the CSR made the change for me after she verified the change to DH’s flight. I am trying to remember when I last canceled a flight because the taxes were credited back to my CC. It might have been Jan.

CP changes can be tricky, especially when they are underage (and traveling out of the US), regular ticket holders you can change online without any problem. For CP, you can cancel and rebook but if you have purchased early bird then I always call and have SW make the change else you lose the EB funds. And if it is an international flight, SW’s system seems to think DS is traveling unaccompanied even though I am attaching him as the CP for DH and always have to call to have him added. The other situation where I called was when I had to change where we were flying to. We were initially going to Orlando but decided to go to Tampa instead so I called to make that change.

Can someone help me figure this out?
My DH already has some SW cards. We want a companion pass and we could wait a year if necessary. We would really need to use the sign up bonus points to help get it. Should he cancel the cards he has that are SW so he could re- apply in a year? Or are there other ways around that?

Yes, he will need to cancel them in order to get the bonus sign-up again. If he has had them more than 2 years, he can reapply 30 days after cancelling. If he less than 2 years from receiving the bonus, he’ll need to wait until it has been 2 years from receiving the bonus. He’ll also, need to be 5/24 meaning having been approved for less than 5 CCs in 24 months. (That’s just not Chase CCs.) If he is eligible, he could apply for the business card. That one currently still has the 60k bonus but requires $3k in spend in 3 months instead of the $2k like the plus and Premier. He will need to be 0/30 meaning no apps in the last 30 days to apply for the business. The referrals are back to 50k bonus points (or at least the ones SW just sent me were). So if he got the business SW and then used a referral link to reapply for the Plus or Premier and waited until the Jan statement to meet the spend, he would have CP for 2018 and 2019.

You should be fine if you finish your spend after your Dec statement closes (which will be your payment date plus 3 days). So like my Dec statements closes 12/1 (11/26 payment date) and 12/4 (12/1 payment date). I have until 12/25 and 12/28 to complete spend. Mid December i’ll Make sure have spent $2k on each card. 1/1 and 1/4 will come and 60k will be posted on those dates and around 1/5 or so, I’ll have CP for 2018 and 2019.

The part I don't understand: WHEN does this happen? I want to get the two years of companion pass or as much as possible. So if he applied for new cards in 2017, does he have to complete spending in 2017? Or does he have to wait and apply Jan 2018, spend, get the C pass for remainder 2018 and 2019? Thank you so much for your help!!
