If the rumor about SPG airline transfer partners being discontinued bears out, does anyone have a guess as to how, or if, this will affect the Marriott Hotel + Air packages? This is actually the most likely way I would convert my points into miles: SPG to Marriott to United via a hotel/air package.

I'm going to quote this from a few weeks ago when I analyzed the Marriott travel package value. For those worried about SPG transfers going away, Marriott points can be transferred to the following airlines:
United, Aeromexico, Air Canada*, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Copa Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, GOL/Varig, Hawaiian Airlines, Iberia Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Aeroflot, Air China, Air France/KLM, Alitalia, ANA, Asia Miles, Asiana Airlines, Avianca-TACA LifeMiles, China Eastern, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Japan Airlines, Jet Airways, Korean Air SKYPASS, LAN, Lufthansa Miles & More, Multiplus, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Saudia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways Voyager, TAP Air Portugal, Turkish Airlines, Southwest and JetBlue via these travel packages. It takes a lot of points but the value can be pretty nice (see my quote below for analysis of the Southwest option - you'll want to focus on the lower portion of the comment).
Although not what the original comment intended...SPG points can be moved to SW actually. But they first must be transferred to Marriott. 1 Starwood Point = 3 Marriott points. From there it can be a little convoluted to figure out depending on how many Marriott points you're transferring to Southwest. Here are all of the pertinent transfer rates on the standard rate page:
  • 3,334 SPG = 10,000 Marriott = 2,000 SW RR (1 SPG = 0.60 RR)
  • 6,667 SPG = 20,000 Marriott = 5,000 SW RR (1 SPG = 0.75 RR)
  • 10,000 SPG = 30,000 Marriott = 10,000 SW RR (1 SPG = 1.00 RR)
  • 23,334 SPG = 70,000 Marriott = 25,000 SW RR (1 SPG = 1.07 RR)
  • In the last example this values SPG points at 1.70 cpp (which probably isn't a great redemption value...and all the ones above that are even worse)
Now you can actually get even better returns if you use the Nights and Flights package:
  • 83,334 SPG = 250,000 Marriott = 100,000 SW RR (1 SPG = 1.20 RR) PLUS you get 7 nights* at a Marriott Cat 1-5 property *must be 7 consecutive nights at the same property
  • 90,000 SPG = 270,000 Marriott = 120,000 SW RR (1 SPG = 1.33 RR) PLUS you get 7 nights* at a Marriott Cat 1-5 property *must be 7 consecutive nights at the same property
  • This can actually potentially make sense if you have NO USE for the nights but makes A LOT more sense if you have a use for the nights. If you need to stay at higher than a category 5 it will require additional Marriott points as you can see from the chart in the attachment.
  • In the second example this values SPG points at 2.15 cpp assuming NO value for the nights (which isn't a terrible value but you can do better...NOW if the 7 nights are worth ~$1k to you then this makes it 3.26cpp which is pretty good :))
Hopefully this is some helpful info to somebody, haha!

This is what I was talking about in the post just before this one. So you seem reasonably confident (and I realize it's pure guessing and speculation right now), that these Marriott transfers/packages will stay the same?

Only reason DH and I have the SPG Amex is the transfer to airlines with bonus. Getting on our accounts now and see about transferring. If between us we have 20k I am going to transfer now. So happy now didn't get the SPG Business...
Personally I'm not that sold on this being legit. Right now we have 1 person who said someone on the phone said a week from today. No confirmation yet.

Well Marriott currently has their own transfer program and this nights and flights thing. I obviously am not an insider BUT I'd be SHOCKED if they took this option away - they're attempting to keep both loyalty bases happy...that would be a terrible change with a TON of negative publicity. So I guess I'm reasonably confident then :)

The transfer to Marriott for Nights +Flights was the only reason I got the SPG Business card which just came in the mail today. I’m hoping this option doesn’t go away to soon.

Keep meeting the spends for sure! Those programs weren't rumored to merge until Aug and there is a firestorm coming up now for SPG about this so we should get a response in the next couple days I hope. Marriott has that hotel and flights program you could always check out too. Or experiences or car rentals or a variety of stuff it looks like from their rewards page. I'm guessing they are lousy redemption rates but you could be looking at 275k marriott points between the 2 of you so I'd check out all your options before abandoning that ship! http://www.marriott.com/marriott-rewards/use.mi
Edit: math and here are Marriott's airline partner rates http://www.marriott.com/rewards/usepoints/morerew.mi
Thanks for the reminder and the talk off the ledge. The marriott redemption rates aren't nearly as great as the Starwood redemptions with bonus, but they will work. I just hate defraying bonus category spend to the Amex, LOL, but it's a good reminder that there is still value there. Thanks, and I'll do the math before deciding what to do if April 16th proves to be accurate.

I went online to check the SPG Business card offer and it still offers the 5000 points for each 20000 points to frequent flyer programs. Would they make these changes so fast without changing the wording in the sign up bonus.

Somewhere in there is the "we can change this at our sole discretion at any time" type line that would cover this sort of thing.

Don't forget the Daily Getaways deals are starting! I just received an email remainder about them. Today is Universal Express Ticket w/admission in CA for $139 starting at 1 pm EST.

Late to the party...But who is this offered through? Thanks

I don't know that it is legitimate either, but since it was a matter of sending some of DH's points to mine (and then my skymiles account) and seeing as it takes 5 days to transfer between spouses figured just in case better start. As we have seen from Chase this last month they really can change the conditions at any time.

DoC's leak about the spg event gives it a bit more credence in my book. In your book I can definitely see why you should start the process now, better safe than sorry :)

Mom and I went to Costa Rica for a week In Jan 2017.
We stayed at the Breeze Private Residences Club in Guanacaste.
We felt completely safe while in Costa Rica. We did a couple private excursions. We chose private ones so we didn’t need to worry about Mom keeping up.

Is that a good central area? I'm now seriously thinking of booking Costa Rica for next year. I have a Alaska Companion pass
i need to use and 600 in airline credit. i just read on points guy someone wrote don't stay in San Jose it is horrible.

Now trying a decent hotel for points.....

I need a love button for this :) I think the exception is @calypso726 with that suite, I'm pretty sure I'd be hanging out in there every second I can cuz unless I hit the lottery that would be a once in a lifetime event.

Hahaha! I’m always excited to board the plane and I am one of those who is standing while they’re calling. But, I make sure not to be blocking travel to the entrance for others. By the time we get to the gate all the seats are taken, so we stand. I know we will be in the first group, but I also know that people who need extra assistance, military folks and lifetime “I live on a plane status” people will be called before us. I think I will barely be able to control myself waiting the board the suite next month! OMG! I can’t believe that’s next month already!

Haha I actually thought about Calypso's suite when typing that! That I would agree with. However, I think most of these people are rushing to their economy seats (where I'll be sitting too, so no shame!) after complaining about having to take their shoes off at TSA.

I think a lot of people rush to board before the rest in their group because they want to make sure they get overhead space for their carry on. I can’t think of any other reason why they would. Granted, as soon as we board we do take time to wipe down our seats, trays, seatbelts and anything else we might touch while seated with antibacterial wipes. Planes are nasty are not at all cleaned very well in between flights. I’m sure others do this too and may rush to go get it over with but it doesn’t take more than a couple of minutes.

“There are also some ramblings that direct transfers between Marriott & SPG will end on this April 16th date.”

I’m confused. So what would we use our SPG points for? No airlines, no Marriott hotels...
I guess could use them to book SPG til August, but then what?
The info out there is vague and makes no sense to me.

I was planning to use my SPG sign up bonus for Atlantis, but I won’t have the points in time to transfer them.
