10/5/18 - 30K MR after $4k spend in 3 months ( 4 year Cardholder. Received retention 2 years ago, nothing last year).
10/5/18 - 20K MR after $3k spend in 3 months ($1.5k spend last year, $4k spend this YTD, haven't received retention on this previously)
10/10/18 - 30k MR or $300 after $4k spend in 3 months (3 year cardholder; never received retention; roughly $10k spend last year)
10/11/18 - no offer, card cancelled. Called the retention number in the wiki and said I wanted to close my card and he canceled it without any effort to save. Had received retention offers for the last 3 or so years (every year since opening, very little spend on the card (less than $1000/year)
10/18/18 - 20K MR points for spending $3000/ 3 months. Took the offer.
12/27/18 - 50K MR points, no spending requirements. Took the offer.
1/7/19 - 20K MR points for spending $3000/ 3 months. Took the points. No spend other than original minimum spend and several Amex offers.
1/7/19 - $500 credit or 50K MR points. No spend requirement. I took the points. Winning! I had accepted a retention offer two years ago. Roughly $60k spending in 2018.

Thanks so much for this. I really appreciate it. It looks like offers are alive and well at the moment.

I’m reposting what I replied to you last summer, with a few edits:

This pertains to the Amex Platinum, but can be applied more generally. Since you’re well over a year into holding the Platinum, you could call just before your AF is about to post to fish for an offer, take it or think about it, and after your AF posts if you didn’t like the first offer, and again before the AF is due. Amex will refund the AF if you cancel a card within 30 days after the statement in which the AF posts.

The Amex retention department can be reached at 1-800-452-3945. However, I don’t think Amex calls it the “retention department,” even though that’s what they’re there for.

Before you call in, you should check out FlyerTalk’s thread on Amex retention offers for the latest data points on what people are being offered to keep their cards open. This way, you can familiarize yourself with the range of offers on your card product and whether what’s ultimately offered to you is good or bad. You can follow the thread here: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/ame...812751-american-express-retention-offers.html

When you call in, you can say something along the lines of, “The annual fee on my card is about to post (or just posted), and I’m evaluating whether to keep the card or cancel it. Do you have any offers or incentives that’ll help me decide to keep the card?” Don’t be afraid to say “cancel,” because that’s often the trigger word for Amex to make you some offers. If the Amex rep asks if you want to cancel, without making you any offers, tell them “no, I haven’t decided to cancel at this time, but I’m evaluating my options,” and ask again if they have any offers for you. Amex will not cancel the card without reading you a long list of disclosures and getting your affirmative consent. So don’t worry about that. The rep may also try to sell you on the value of the card’s benefits, particularly when it comes to the Platinum. Even if you really love the Platinum’s benefits, this is a sales tactic you shouldn’t fall for because it’s in your interest to downplay their value to you. You recently got a CSR, which Amex views as a serious competitor to the Platinum, so you can leverage having another premium travel rewards card against Amex. The CSR has a lower AF, an easier to use $300 travel credit than the Platinum’s $200 airline fee credit, you might not use Uber, the UR points are easier to earn and worth more to use through the Chase travel portal, the CSR also gives you access to the Priority Pass Lounges, the CSR has better trip delay/interruption and rental insurance, etc. You also have the Business Platinum, which gets you a lot of the same benefits as on the personal Platinum, including Centurion and Priority Pass Lounge access, Gold status with Marriott/SPG and Hilton. The personal Platinum does have the Uber and Saks credits though, and 5x MR for flights booked directly with the airline. If you don’t like the offers Amex gives you when you first call in, tell them you’d like to think about it, hang up and try again later. You might get a different offer after your AF posts.

Amex retention offers are attached to your account and can change periodically. The Amex rep is likely just reading whatever offer is available to your account that comes up on screen. Factors that can influence retention offers include how much spend you put on the card in the past year, is your spend up or down since MSR, how long you’ve held the card, whether you’ve used up any of the card benefits, whether you got a retention offer last year (retention offers are once per 13 months), and I’m also guessing more broadly their retention rate for that card product at the time and even time of year. Anecdotally, people have called before their AF posts, after their AF posts, and just before the AF is due to see if they get an offer, and if they don't like it HUCA later to see if they get a better offer.

I've called on a weekday early morning (Pacific Time) and got a sh*t offer on my Amex PRG; called about a week later on a weekday afternoon, same sh*t offer; called a week later on a weekend morning, same sh*t offer. About a month later, I saw numerous DPs of much better retention offers on the PRG. Last year on my Platinum, I called in on a Saturday early morning, and got an almost irresistible retention offer of 30k MR with no spend requirement, but I also did put $25k/yr. on the card, double dipped the airline credits, used all my Uber credits, saved ~$200 on Amex Offers, and had my wife as an AU for another $175, so I’m guessing Amex really wanted me to pay another AF or they’d be losing money on my card.

If you don’t get a good offer, think about whether you want to close it since Amex is apparently now counting cards opened and closed against whether you get the pop up. I do think you’ll get some kind of retention offer, but you need to decide if the offer offsets enough of the $550 AF, minus the value of the airline, Uber, and Saks credits, and whatever other benefits of the card that you can’t get from the Biz Plat, to renew for another year.

Hope this helps.

This does help. Thank you very much. It sounds like we should at least try rather than just auto paying the AF. Honestly I doubt we'd cancel the card if there is no offer, esp since DD is an AU on this one, but still worth a phone call.

STICKY UPDATES:
I conceded and added SUB to the glossary...but don't expect me to start using it! :rotfl2:

Added a link on the 3rd Sticky to the "News" thread we created on DISchurners with a short explanation.

I will continue to post these when I update something so everybody is aware what's on those first few comments. I'm open to any additional suggestions there too if you think something is missing!
How democratic of you!!!

It's fresh on my mind cause at basketball on Monday night, my friend just told me that her dh was stung getting into bed at their resort. She said it was a Marriott and they called down and someone came and sprayed and changed the bedding. Otherwise, they were not comped for a night or anything!

I would freak if I found a scorpion in my baby's crib!! House on the market the next day!
My in-laws have been there for 25 years so I have had many, many visits out there and except for that one time have never seen a scorpion. And it was dark so I am just guessing they were scorpions. I never worried about them. I think of them as spiders here, which DS and I absolutely hate.

I'm on my second Odyssey. My first one was 16 yo when I laid it to rest :( I loved that van, even though I bought it when it was 7yo. I liked it even more than my new one. Maybe it was because I owned my first one and this one I am leasing. I will turn it in a year from now and buy a used Pilot, most likely. I think I am ready to change styles but we will see. I'll have to see how many kids I still have at home. I do love the van for road trips and hauling stuff around. It's not uncommon for me to have my 4 kids plus a couple others (always two neighbor kids with me to church) so I will have to think through everything. Kia vans get very good reviews too!
We have a Honda Pilot and Crosstour. We love the Pilot (and Crosstour that they sadly stopped making). We actually traded in a BMW for it. The maintenance cost of the BMW was outrageous. We only have one kiddo but the extra seating is nice when we do need it. It’s great for when we go to Hersheypark and come with all of DH and DS winnings since DH spends the majority of his time playing games.

I almost went for a pilot a couple years ago when I got rid of my old van but at the time, I was still hauling all the kids around a lot with tons of gear. I just wasn’t sure the trunk could handle it all. It is much smaller than the odyssey trunk. However things could look a lot different in a year. I still would like to seat all six but I won’t be hauling near the school gear. My aunt just got a pilot and loves hers.

ETA: never heard of a cross tour.

The Crosstour was the Honda’s version of a crossover. Basically, an Accord with all wheel drive. It’s great in the snow and can easily make it up our steep driveway. I love, love, love it! DS wants it to his car when he starts to drive (in 4 years.)

@calypso726 how is the Residence Inn CP. I have a reservation for there in April and the one midtown and can’t decide. Curious to hear!

It was small but fine for 2 people. The bed was comfortable and so were the pillows. The kitchenette has a refrigerator and freezer, each in a drawer as well as a microwave. The grout in the shower looked a little sketchy but not really gross. Reception was super nice. Breakfast was included but we did not partake. We got in after midnight on Friday, woke up and went straight to the Mickey Exhibition. Then we switched our flights the next day to try and beat snowmaggeddon and were on our way to the airport by 4 am. The location is great! It's about 7 short easy blocks to TKTS. The Broadway theater is just down the street. I will totally stay there again and our stay is the reason I am toying with getting back under 5/24 for a Marriott Biz card. I'd love another FN cert for DH and I that we can use here. I was planning to do a short write up on the hotel thread sometime this weekend.

Have to give a shout out to my Highlander. The new ones are SO nice and I love how it drives more like a car. Just couldn’t bring myself to do the minivan thing. I totally get it if you have greater than 2 kids or a dog. We fall into neither category

Oh thank goodness, another Highlander peep! We are a Highlander family too. Me, PlanePrincess, his sister, my mom, my brother. I  my Highlander. The only other car that gives me pause to consider anything other than another Highlander whenever mine dies is the Tesla X. Mostly because when I am teaching Forklift classes at Tesla the guys absolutely rave about it on and on. I'm not ready to cheat on Toyota though and that's a lot of money for a car!

We’d actually have to stay in the Courtyard part. The residence inn rooms only have King beds. So that means no breakfast. The midtown residence inn does accommodate 4, comes with breakfast and is closer to Grand Central (we come from my sisters via grand central). But I think the one you stayed at has more as far as restaurants etc. Then again we will be busy so not really hanging by the hotel anyways. Decisions!!

Yes I love my highlander it’s been good to us. Tesla’s are nice but the price would hold me back too!!

You can use them on separate reservations but you have to use them for every night on the stay. So if you only have 3 night awards left you can't upgrade only 3 nights of a 4 night stay. I don't have it pulled up now but I believe they have the usual language where consecutive nights is considered a stay regardless of number of reservations. But if you have 5 individual nights booked you can try for an upgrade on each one, doesn't have to be a 5 night stay.
Thank you. I think that’s what I’m going to select, it was that or gifting myself silver - DH is platinum.

Oops - double post

NON-expedited...what are people seeing as the turnaround time for receiving a CIC card?

That's our next application, and while we are holding our mail while gone, I don't want the card to get into that stack in case anything weird happens. I was going to try to time my application to have the card arrive no earlier than 2/5 (of course I'm assuming I'll get auto-approved which likely won't happen)...

At any rate, thoughts on that turnaround time (from approval to card in hand)?

Not a CIC but applied for the CIU 1/3...instant approval....received the card 1/12

So it’s almost time for my next app and I was planning on a United personal card, but I see the United biz card has the higher SUB. :smooth: (Me learning the new acronym lol). If I get the biz card how long before I can apply for the personal card? It would be nice to jump on it if they raise that SUB.

I considered going for the SW CP (seems late in the game), but the travel I’d use it for this year is not set in stone, so not sure it would be beneficial. Could be 20/21 or even 21/22 would be better for me (‘20 is the year of our big Europe trip so there won’t be much if any domestic travel that year).

Any advice? I’m not in a huge rush since I want to spend down my stack of $100 visa gc I got over the holiday shopping season.

Usual recommendation between Chase applications is 2-3 months....
tough decision on applications.....it’s not late for the SW CP if your going to be flying SW and use the miles and CP in 2019/2020....if it’s a better fit with your travel plans wait until the end of the year to go for it...but that’s also assuming the rules and bonuses will stay the same

anyone have opinions on pop vs AofA? Looking at splitting my may stay. Start at one of the fun themed values and when DH and my parents arrive, move over to YC. Is that too much work by myself with the kids for the move?
Was also thinking a 1 bedroom at AKL-J or SSR so when DD3 naps I can play a card game or something with the boys in the living room. Plus making meals for bfast and lunch would be a savings and easier with only 1 adult.
Gosh, I can't make decisions. ever.

I would recommend POP just for the renovated rooms - the Little Mermaid rooms are okay, and the theming of the whole resort is super cute, but I'd rather have a renovated room!

I've done a resort change by myself with the kiddos - I just called bell services and had them take care of the luggage - so it's possible! :)

For anyone who's done the Discover savings bonus, did you use the "cancel" trick mentioned in the DOC comments or just do normal deposits? I see it referenced a lot but not sure how it really works. DH and I both opened accounts for DS and DD, both have about $6700 we want to actually end up in the accounts. Was thinking I'd just deposit/withdraw 3x to get to $15k for $150 bonus each, but now I'm wondering if I should combine the money and do larger deposits into to try for the $25k/$200 bonus. Is it better to push deposits from our BoA accts to Discover or pull from Discover? Also, on savings accounts isn't there a limit to the number of withdrawls you can do in a month? Sorry for so many questions, any suggestions would be appreciated!

We are driving 3 hours because she is flying out of DC. I have been checking the weather nonstop for over a week. It kept on going back and forth between 3-5" of snow and just rain. There can be wildy different weather on the 3 hour drive. I THINK we will be Ok. Just worried about the temps dropping too fast and getting icy. She doesn't fly out until 6 pm but I told her we need to leave at 9 am. Getting pushback from that, but with slowdowns at TSA and who knows what kind of traffic you get going in that direction plus maybe icy conditions. UGhhh, ok, stressing myself out now! lol

We do have dates for the term, it is just very confusing. The last day of classes is May 17th with 2 different periods of examinations that run until June 28th. The only thing I see is do not schedule return home before exams are finished. I guess we are just in disbelief that exams run 6 weeks? It just says you will get more information at orientation. That is not any help.
My DD is abroad this semester and because of the horrible lack of information, I bought her a round trip ticket with the full understanding that I may have to eat the return and buy her another one. Unfortunately, it seems like we guessed wrong and her current return is on the last day of finals. She's going to try to rearrange things, but I will probably just get her another ticket.
