Do You Carry Cash?

I don't understand people saying they pay their credit card bill each week? Isn't it just easier, especially if you're paying the bill in full, to set an automatic payment on the due date each month? I never have to even think about our credit card payments - they just automatically come out of our account each month.

I don't want to wait until I get the bill.......I would have anxiety issues. It can be an average of $1,500 - $2,000 one month and thousands a few times a year. I charge a few things, I see it posted and pay it directly on-line (linked to one of my checking accounts).

When I receive a paper bill at home, it's out in the mail the next day. I just can't see it or let it sit there.

I have an "emergency" $20 I carry around with my cc. I have had to break it out a couple of times when I unexpectedly needed to pay cash in a place where they wouldn't take cc. There are a couple of places I shop routinely that are cash only, so I always have some at home that I will bring along when I plan to go to those places.

Generally DH carries $50-$100 cash. It will last anywhere from a couple of weeks to a few months depending on what we are doing. He charges most things as well, but he usually ends up paying at the farmer's market and other places that are cash only.

LOL I don't use an ATM either. I take my paper paycheck to the local bank on payday and get the cash I need till the next paycheck. DH has an ATM card in his wallet but it's been approximately 20 years since he used it so I question its validity :scratchin

I know, I'm behind the times but it works for me.

This was me too until about three months ago - retired. I never use the ATM machine. I can count the times I have used it.

Don't have much choice now, it's either the ATM or write a check to cash if we want a few dollars in our pocket. All is direct deposit.

DH does not even have an ATM and does not want one. Cash or cc is fine with him.

I pay our credit card about twice a month.

I enter all transactions in Quicken to track our spending. Some months, even waiting 2 weeks it can take time to enter all the transactions.

Do not pay fees as we pay it off in full every month.

Very rarely do I have cash on me. I do help myself to the laundry cash that my lazy family leave in their pockets as a pittance payment of my hard labour. Usually I give that to the homeless or street performers I walk by. Otherwise I have no need for it.
Hey.....if they leave money in their dirty clothes and I do the laundry, it's all mine now!

Such a foreign concept to me! I’ve been using an ATM since 1986/7ish! Even to see the teller you would need to swipe your ATM card.
We haven’t got paper pay cheques in 2 decades!
Couldn’t imagine the hassle of going to the bank to access my pay!
I know the Canadian banking system is much more advanced than in America but I didn’t realize this much.

Eh. I deposit paper checks through an app on my phone. No need to go to the bank.

Haven't used my debit card in years. I think it's in a file cabinet. Credit card does everything I need.

Dh gets cash for refereeing soccer games. That becomes our pocket $.

For most people it’s not lack of access to ATMs or Debit cards it’s that when it comes to forms of payment they’re easily compromised. That can shut down your access to your money until it’s straightened out. Most people rarely go to the bank anymore, they do everything electronically and don’t have a need to go to the bank or use an ATM card (or check.)

Always. I get $100 from an ATM and sometimes it lasts for two months or more. When it gets below $20 I replenish. I like having some cash for the occasional place that doesn't accept credit/debit cards. Also cash for tips for hotel housekeepers or valet parking attendants.

I'm the same way. I take cash from the ATM and it usually lasts for a while. Most of my purchases are credit for reward points, but I still patronize some cash only businesses.

I go to an old-fashioned barber who only accepts cash. Some vendors at the large indoor farmer's market don't accept credit/debit cards. Then there are the occasional cash donations to a Veterans group to the guy outside of Wawa or the high school cheerleaders/marching band soliciting funds outside the supermarket.

I'm surprised at the number of posters who appear to treat cash as the germ and disease riddled paper that it is.

I can wait 5 minutes at Costco for savings like that. Multiply that out over 4 cars and 52 weeks and I save over $300 in a year.

Well, I have never timed the wait at Costco, but it can be enough cars in line that I suspect the wait is longer than 5 minutes.

I also suspect the wait is longer than five minutes.

Even if only five minutes, with one car, times 52 weeks, would equal 260 minutes, more than four hours. $300 divided by 4 cars is $75 per car.

Waste four hours to save $75? Not me.

I don't believe that posters experience is reflective of the American banking system as a whole. I am an American and also need to swipe my ATM/Debit card for the teller to bring up my account. I can't think of a single person IRL who gets paid via paper check. I also would never want to go to the bank to access my pay, I can't even remember the last time I was in a bank (not just the ATM) since I deposit all my checks using my bank's app.

I have never waited longer then 5 minutes to buy gas at Costco. Typically I pull up, pump, and leave.

How long are the lines at your local Costcos?

I try to save whenever I can.

Even if it is just $20 if I can find multiple $20 opportunities and several $100+, before long I have saved $1000 for the year.

I take that $1,000+ and I vacation more!

I'd save a penny a gallon, I use about 30 gallons a month per car, so I'd save 30 cents a month per car or $3.60 a year per car.

I used to work in a bank. You'd be amazed at the amount of people that still come to the bank weekly for whatever reason.

Another American who doesn’t have/ never had an ATM card. I always have enough cash on me or at home and when I need more I go to the bank and withdraw it. I usually only withdraw cash before a trip.

How do you get cash without an ATM card?

The post I quoted seems to be under the notion that we have no way to get to our money unless we go to the bank or use a debit/ATM card. I was just trying to clear that up.

I either write a check for cash OR fill out a withdrawal slip from my account.

But doesn't the teller need to see your client card (aka debit/ATM). Or how do they get your account information?
If I go to a teller they ask for my client/ATM/debit card and you swipe(or insert) and they bring up your account.
