Good morning Churner Peeps! Today I bring you a brand new episode of Crazy things that happen to Calypso on vacation. Let's recap: Last year brought us the flight cancellations in NYC due to a sudden winter storm and scrambling to get a flight out at 6 am and not much sleep to get back home. Then there was the flight cancellation in Scotland that forced us to take a 6.5 hour Uber to London so we wouldn't miss our flight home. That was followed by the 3 day Bahamas & Castaway Cay DCL cruise during Hurricane Dorian that turned into a 6 night Western Caribbean cruise because we couldn't get back. We ended the year with cutting a vacation in Japan 2 days short to escape a super Typhoon with no flight changes available and booking the first flights we could make out of Japan which were to Shanghai and then New York staying overnight and another flight the next day to Miami for just under $10,000 and crossing our fingers that trip insurance would cover it all.

Starting this year's adventures:

Last November we booked a stay for an IHG property for this weekend in Key West using our last unrestricted FN certs. On our 4 hour drive to Key West last night we decided to call the hotel and ask if they can combine our separate reservations so we didn't have to check in and out. The hotel informs us that there is no reservation for tonight 1/25 just for last night 1/24. The reservation number we gave for tonight was attached to a stay on 11/25/19 and was a no show. It is clear at this point that the IHG agent made a typo when booking our reservation. The hotel informed us that there is availability for this evening 1/25 but we'd need to call IHG to do it sine they can't on their end as the FN cert was forfeited. The first person we spoke to at IHG was either willfully obtuse or simply lacked listening, comprehension and critical thinking skills to a degree that was quite impressive. It was like the Abott & Costello Who's on First skit but not nearly as funny and entertaining.

I politely asked to speak with a manager or supervisor and get routed to guest relations. This agent informed us that there was nothing he could do about the FN cert that was applied last November but he'd call the hotel and book with points and then refund the points. This seems fine to me. When he gets back on the line he informs me that the front desk manager at the hotel says they are completely sold out and there is no availability at all. At this point we are 2 hours into the drive and I tell PlanePrincess to turn the car around. I explained to the agent that I was not going to drive an additional 2 hours, getting there after 10 pm to simply go to bed, wake up, check out and go home. The agent asks me to hold on the line and he would see what he could do to make this right. When he finally gets back on the line and we are negotiating the call drops. I try calling back but am routed to a different agent and there's no way to get me directly back with the one I was speaking with.

The new agent after being informed of the situation and reading notes sends me to another agent. This guy is supposedly the one to deal with the FN certs. After about an hour with him, he tells us there is nothing he can do. My FN cert is now forfeit too since we are past cancellation for the hotel and PlanePrincess FN cert was forfeit last November due to the no show. He then says he will send me back to the agent I spoke with before him. The next agent is not the same one and I go on to explain everything to her. To her credit she seems quite empathetic like the second agent. She said the hold time on the phone would be a while, but she had to get management from another department involved but would do everything she could. I told her I appreciated whatever she could do and would wait. At this point we are parked at the Publix a couple of blocks from my house since I don't want the call to drop. My neighborhood is basically where cell signals go to die. Long story short, she was able to put back both of our unrestricted FN certs but sadly unable to extend the expiration date or add additional points. After being in the car for well over 4 hours, on the phone for 3 1/2 hours and speaking with 5 different agents, I was done and just happy to have something resolved.

When we got home I decided to see if the FN cert glitch was still in play and just get 70k points in each of our accounts so I called to book a weekend at the Willard in DC which most of you know I absolutely love! Whelp, the glitch must have been fixed because they were able to attach the FN certs. I still don't know if we are actually going. It will depend on getting that weekend off from work and I guess the flights. If it doesn't work out, I will figure out something else. No biggie. Honestly, I'm just glad this happened for a planned weekend here in Florida.
My original plan for these FN certs was French Polynesia, but that plan got derailed when ABD announced Japan so I switched gears.

So, instead of riding around on PlanePrincess' One Wheel in Key West, I'm home doing :laundy:

Lesson learned: Double and triple check reservation confirmations

I received the email from RR about 1k points if I use turbo tax.
Does anyone know if the points would still trigger if I do the completely free option? Thinking of using for my daughter's, as they are both free file.
I read the fine print but couldn't see anything.
I did this last year for my kids. Used the free version for all 3. Figured it was my fee to them. lol

so far this morning,
"DH" applied for SW card with my referral - Need more time response.

I called to upgrade my SW Personal card to the Priority. Unfortunately, I didn't realize you needed 5K CL minimum to upgrade. I had reduced the CL a long time ago. So they need to approve that increase and then I'll need to call in again.

Somehow DH's SW flight in May didn't have his RR number attached. So I called in to have that added. I could not find how to do that on-line.

Went through all the old CCs and will be shredding all closed ones. Too much clutter to keep for no reason.

Finally closed my PNC and DH PNC bank accounts

Got a notice the flights I am tracking for July went up $100. Uggh - see my post on loving SW. I still think the prices will fall but I need to come up with a backup plan.
Do you have any other Chase personal cards you could move CL over to the SW? It can be temporary just to get the PC, can always move it back to the other card after. Can do that part through SM and then just call in again to PC once it's up to 5k.

For the SW flight, if you click on the flight in your account (or go through Manage Reservations) when it shows the passengers there's a couple links underneath the name. If there's no RR number attached it should show a link to add there.

It has in past years. I also had it credit for me one time when I printed our taxes and mailed them instead of filing online, even though I think it says you must file online. Probably not a concern for anyone else, just us since the IRS has DH’s birthday wrong

I think I read this here, but if someone missed it, you can get $10 for loading $100 on Amazon. Since I was placing an order this morning and noticed the promo, I quickly did it, since I didn't have any Amazon cards and my MR points weren't giving me any discount.

I ordered some more of the cheap packing cubes. They worked perfect for me and have not snagged and the zippers seem fine. These are 'Fostak' and have 6 5 star reviews - no lower - but don't come up in an ordinary packing cube search. They are 11.99 but last time I got them for something like $3. This time - $10 off my $100 reload. I also ordered a cute little RFID card holder that fits in my pocket. Had one I found in the kids toy box, but it belonged to younger daughter. It's perfect for annual pass card, DVC card, license, gift card, etc while in the parks or shopping.
Where did you find the Amazon promo?

Is there a way I can be added as an AU on DH's new SW personal card without it counting against my 5/24? I've almost met my MSR on my Delta Gold AMEX and would like to help him get to the 5,000 MSR on his SW card for the 75,000.

Any tips? First initial and last name maybe?

AHHHHH..... how frustrating! Glad you got something back that you could use though.....

No way to be added without it counting against your 5/24....
You could have him request a replacement card saying the card was damaged...when I did this last year .both cards had the same number, expiration date etc, I also think some people add the card to apple wallet and use it that way

Alright folks - I'll probably peruse the thread some evenings but as of 7am tomorrow I'm on vacation. Have a great week. Somebody try to post some things to the news thread on DISchurners if anything major happens!
Have a wonderful, fun trip! You've done so much planning for this, now you get to enjoy it. Hope everything works smoothly!

I have decided to go for a new AmEx card. I can meet the spend on either the personal or biz platinum and I'm okay with the steep AFs.

With the personal platinum I can still only pull up 60K MRs (I try incognito), but I could probably get 100k MRs for the biz.

I would use the Saks and some of the Uber monthly credits and possibly the FHR benefits on the personal card.

On the biz card I could possibly, maybe, just maybe, use the Dell credit if I tried hard enough (but would be OOP cash since the things I like are well over $100.00).

So the major difference is in the MRs. Which card should I apply for?

I should also mention that the number of times I will be able to spend $10K for the MSR are very, very limited. But the Saks credit is tempting me (super easy for me to use). I know there are experts that can look at these things more critically than I can, so WWYD?
Do you have a P2 that can support you for the personal plat? That might figure into the calculations too. Though personally, I wouldn't take the 60k offer. In additional to incognito, you can try different browers, different computers, with VPN, with VPN while logged into a remote computer (that was the one that worked for me).

Is there anything on Microsoft you might want? You can use the Dell credit to buy Microsoft GC and bank the credits that way.

The personal plat will take up a 5/24 slot, is that a concern?

The biz plat has 1.5 MRs for purchases over $5000. So if the spend you have in mind is over that, would make a small difference too.

I will try to pull up a higher offer from my iPad -- that's a good idea. I don't have a VPN. Microsoft GCs are a good use for sure. I'm at 3/24 with the Hyatt card falling off in July, so I'm not overly concerned about taking up a spot.

The purchase I need to make is by Feb. 7th for the PIF for our Arctic cruise. So it would qualify for the 1.5 MRs.

Currently I only have 35,000 MRs in Canada but I am able to combine them (with the difference in dollar value taken into account).

I think I'm leaning towards the biz plat at this point.

EDITED TO ADD: using my iPad I still get 60K MR for the personal platinum. However I clicked on the green card and got 45K MRs. Says if I close the link the offer might not be available again. Tried from my laptop and got 30K MRs. I'm still leaning towards the biz plat at this point for the 100K MRs, since I can make the spend and will get 1.5 x MRs on the first purchase.

I don't think you mentioned whether P2 has a MR-earning card that earns a high supportal bonus from which to support you. That could change the math.

Don't self support.

Have you tried the Opera browser? It has a basic VPN function built-in. Like @wanderlust7 said, play with incognito mode on different browsers, computers/tablets/phones, and VPN settings.

The Biz Plat also gives you access to Amex FHR, and you'll earn 5x MR for it.

The Biz Plat also has Centurion, Escape, and Priority Pass Lounge access.

If you decide to go with the Biz Plat, call in for the 100k MR/$10k MSR offer. Details on DISchurners.

Another card I'd maybe consider if you have a P2 supporting you is the Biz Gold via supportal link with a 75k MR SUB tiered as 50k MR/$5k and an additional 25k MR when you spend an extra $5k in the same 3 months period. It has a $295 AF and doesn't come with any offsetting credits, but does earn 4x MR in the top two following categories where you spend the most each month: restaurants; airfare purchased directly from airlines; advertising; gas stations; shipping; computer hardware, software, and cloud computing purchases made directly from select providers. Most importantly, the Biz Gold earns the highest supportal bonuses at 20k-25k MR per approval, but is still subject to a 55k MR/card/calendar year cap. (By comparison, the supportal bonus from a Biz Plat is usually only 15k-20k MR.) This could come in handy if you plan to support P2 to at least two Amex cards this year.

If you call in for the Biz Plat, the Amex reps can also offer you the Biz Gold with a 50k MR/$5k MSR SUB.

If you go the Biz Gold route, allow a week for it to arrive in the mail.

One more thing about the Green. The introductory welcome offer with the Away credit ended, but it's still possible to pull up a 45k MR/$2k MSR SUB via incognito (as you did). It's still a good card, and a high SUB given the low spend. Your cruise payment would also trigger the Green's 3x MR on travel purchases. However, it seems like your PIF is much > than $2k, so anything more might be spend wasted on a category bonus when you could use it instead to hit another MSR.

Is a call-in Biz Plat and incognito Green possible with your spend? Anyway to put $2k on the Green for 3x MR and hit the MSR, and $5k+ on the Biz Plat for 1.5x MR and hit or almost meet MSR? (Remember to keep spending on these cards where it makes sense after MSR.)

The Biz Plat would arrive within 2-3 days. The Green would take about a week or slightly longer to arrive.

I missed that. How does that work? Just go to load $100 on amazon gift card directly and get $10 off? Is it with a certain credit card?

Correct. Just go to your account and I think it is payment methods. I just used my amex gold. I don't think you had to pick a particular card. In 2 minutes, I used the funds to complete my order.

I received the email from RR about 1k points if I use turbo tax.
Does anyone know if the points would still trigger if I do the completely free option? Thinking of using for my daughter's, as they are both free file.
I read the fine print but couldn't see anything.
I have done it the last few years for my dd's taxes. I buy Turbo Tax for me but have used the free for her each year, to extend the expiration on Dh's miles. Of course that is no longer an issue, but I will still do it, to get the 1000 :-)

We just got our kids skiing last year. Both DH and I skied as kids,, I was even on my college racing team, but somehow never did together. We started with a 1-day promo pack of 4 lessons l, rentals and tickets 2 years ago, and the kids dis great. We just wore whatever we had, no special gear. Kids maybe wore bike helmets? LOL

That got us hooked, so last year we geared us all up with used gear (there's tons of used ski equipment on FB marketplace and ski shops sell used sets, plus our local mountain does a huge ski swap consignment sale every year). It was still $$$ for 4 people. Even with used gear, it adds up!

This year we have annual passes to our small local resorts and my daughter has ski club with her friends, so we go 2-3x a week (it's 20 min away, so we can go for 2-4 hours). Both our families ski and lots of families around here do as well, so it's been a great social and family activity. I love that it's something we can all do together.

We live 2-3 hours from all the big New England ski resorts, so we will definitely start doing weekend trips now that the kids are getting good. I am itching to ski something bigger than these little local hills in CT! I priced out 1-day for Mt Snow and it was under $300 for ski in/out hotel room and 3 tickets (my youngest is free), so not too bad. Unforunately, we ended up not going bc other commitments.

When I moved further south to Maryland, it became less convenient. I've done Stowe, Loon, Smuggler's Notch in NE and also Mont Tremblant and Mont Sainte Anne in Quebec - stayed in the hotel there and were able to hop over our balcony out to the ski lifts. I've also done many little places like 7 springs and ski liberty closer to here, but after my divorce, it just wasn't as easy any more so I switched to Disney!

And I started out cross country. I think that's what I would like to go back to as it's possible to do it just out in a park (if there is snow).

Where did you find the Amazon promo?

I see @reliev posted the link, so that should work.

I went to my account, payment options, and reload your balance under amazon giftcard and the offer popped up. Its an additional $10, not a discount so you end with $110 in your balance.

Thank you so much for the feedback / information.

If I had a dollar for every time I've asked my AmEx Plat-obsessed dh for a referral link I'd have enough $ for a first class ticket to Europe :rolleyes1. For some strange reason he thinks the links cost him money and he doesn't understand the value in MRs or referrals, nor does he care to learn. So sadly I've given up asking for a referral link.

I am at 4/24 with AmEx, only 1 slot open for them. I will have another space open in the spring when I cancel one of the bonblah cards.

Yes. I used it last year for my niece’s taxes.

Sad conversation with dd this morning. Now that we know where she'll attend university (and when her winter break will be) I asked her where she wants to go next year. She replied "I don't know, maybe just come home". I really feel like I've failed here :sad:.

Bit of good news though. We were looking at where she can do her study abroad and Waseda University (in Shinjuku {Tokyo}) is one of her options. She has to rank her top 5 choices and can get any of her choices. Engineering choices are limited, but she can apply to the UK (U of Edinburgh and U St. Andrews), Sweden (Lund and Upppsala Universities), a few in New Zealand and a handful in Australia. Those would her top destinations (given the somewhat limited options). So at least I'll have a trip in 2021 / 22 to look forward to!
