The Running Thread - 2020

Welp. They just pulled the plug on the Tobacco Road Marathon that I was planning to run as a supported training run this weekend. Disappointed, but not terribly surprised. They had been adamant about the race going forward with additional safeguards as late as last night. :sad2:

@camaker that is a bummer but i think it is just the beginning of canceled races

I agree. I am a little surprised at it since it's a relative small race and there are only 6 cases of coronavirus in the county. It looks like they are going to be deferring everyone's entry to next year. Now I really have to make a decision on that 100k in two weeks. I don't think that will cancel. On the Outer Banks with only ~100 runner and a split start will mean very little proximity to other racers. Between Tobacco Road gone and fully expecting SWRR to be cancelled, I guess I might as well give it a go. Not going to be doing much else this spring race season...

i am looking at Grandma's in June. I am hoping that is far enough away that it won't get canceled. I am still holding out hope for Boston but I think it will get canceled. I am also assuming I will have to re-qualify for Boston. It may be tough to do for 2021. I am also looking at a marathon on April 25 since it is so close to Boston, but i am expecting that may get canceled as well.

Yep...the Pi Run in Ann Arbor, MI was just canceled too. I was signed up for the virtual race and got the email about it. They are letting those who were signed up for the in person race to either switch their registration to the virtual race or to any other race that they put on this year. It's making me glad I held off on signing up for a local 5K next month, but it's also making me feel less and less hopeful about the Star Wars Half

Most of what I've seen points towards Boston getting rescheduled in the fall, if at all possible. I don't think they want to give up this year entirely.

I am hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst (cancellation) for what is supposed to be my first HM - the Savannah Women’s Half the first weekend in April. But, honestly, compared to some things that have been cancelled/postponed around me, a race is a small disappointment. For example, our church and surrounding community (over 3000 volunteers) were supposed to pack over a million meals for starving children this weekend and that has been postponed. It takes so much energy and work to coordinate this event, that it has been a big disappointment for the team that organizes it. Fortunately it is rescheduled for August, but who knows if we’ll be back to “normal” by then. I certainly hope and pray it is so.

I think this will be the case with many races in the next few weeks. I posted a message from the Run the Bluegrass yesterday that was full of hope and confidence. But things are moving too quickly and decisions may well be taken from the race directors sphere of influence when public officials get involved.

DCer here. No rumblings whatsoever about cancelling races. St.Pat's races are all on this weekend, Shamrock in VA Beach is a go the weekend after, Cherry Blossom race (and festival) are all full speed ahead.
I take it back. All the DC races are cancelled, including Shamrock in VA Beach. **edit: Cherry Blossom is still a go, but surrounding events are being pulled

So sorry to hear your first Boston will be canceled/postponed! I actually went through something similar - the first time I qualified, for the 2015 edition, I got sent on a last-minute work trip which caused me to miss the race (after I'd paid and bought the jacket, of course). It was tough to take at the time, but I was able to get back in again. I'm hearing Boston will likely be postponed until the fall. Hopefully that will work with your schedule and you'll still get to run it!

@BikeFan yes if they postpone Boston till fall i can make that work. Otherwise i will just try again. i think i can qualify again. It might take me a little bit but I can do it. I never thought i would qualify the first time so i think i can do it again.

All the Ann Arbor races take place in the spring due to the fall being consumed by Football. I think it will be a hit to the area runners, I expect the Martian in Dearborn to be cancelled, and am hopeful this will pass by June for DXA2.

Well, had the Love Run Half scheduled for the end of the month. Knew that wasn’t going to actually happen. Luckily though, instead of canceling it it’s been rescheduled for 10/10/20.

I took the deferral option for 2021. I can still cancel my DC hotel at no cost and don't want to miss their deferral windows and then have it cancelled.

As of right now a professional conference I have the week of April 20 in Texas is still on.

What is the Grandma's weather and course like? I have the Martian Marathon scheduled for April 18, but I am dubious about whether that will even happen and if I want to fly to get to it. But if Grandma's isn't too hot, maybe that could be an alternative. I die in the heat, though.

its Minnesota so I don’t think too bad. I grew up in north suburbs of Chicago. It can be hot in June but it can also be pretty cold. I would say the weather is likely to be decent. i do like it a little warm though. I prefer running when its 60.

plus course shows be pretty flat. Quite a few Olympic trials qualifiers from Grandma’s Marathon.

Question of the day: What is the weirdest running related dream, or nightmare, you have had? Do you have them often, or just before a race?

Answer: I typically do not have running related dreams, but last night I had a doozy.

I was at WDW for a race weekend, and was at the start area of the 5k. Standing and talking with the few people that were there we were trying to figure out where everyone else was, so hopped in a car and backtracked the driving route down the interstate and saw 2 busses with a pickup truck slid into them and all 4 traffic lanes at a complete stop, with another accident involving a large Alllied moving truck, row houses and a hill behind that. When we got back to the start (not sure how with the roads closed) we were told the race was being moved to Port Orleans hotel, and reaching there were told it was a 1/2 mile swim followed by a 42 lap run. Then the masters swimming group showed up for time trials.

What can I say, except sometimes I dream vividly?

I am new to running. Given my HM at the beginning of April was officially postponed, how should I maintain my training, i.e., how long should my long runs be going forward until a new race is in sight? As info, I am currently using Galloway. TIA!

This is great....but it's too bad we can't actively edit our dreams. So in your case, rather than find out where everyone else was, you could just start the race and have the course and characters to yourself. (Yeah, not very Disney-like)

I have had race dreams where the course went through buildings, and I remember having a vague sense of annoyance because all the stairs and hallways were screwing up my pace!

In the meantime, I am on day 9 of a cold (and no, I don't have any reason to believe it's COVID-19). My fitness routine has suffered, but OTOH, I have no race that I am training for, per se, and any that I have targeted are likely to be canceled at this point anyway. Today I am going to go for an outdoor run. I am grateful that as a runner, this is an outlet that I can continue to take advantage of---and I will refrain from spitting and snot rockets.
