Disneyland Reopening Speculation Superthread

https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-08-06/coronavirus-california-undercount
Of note from this article: “State officials have not yet provided details on when fixes will be made to the electronic system, called CalREDIE, that reports coronavirus test results to the state's disease registry system. California, as a result, lacks an accurate count of coronavirus infections, leading health officials to freeze the state's watchlist, with no counties added or removed.”

So until the system is fixed, progress is stalled.... It also mentioned a county has to be off the watchlist for two weeks before reopening anything, I must have missed that before.

Let’s hope those good numbers we were seeing this week are actually accurate. 🤞
It’s information like this that makes me feel like they just need to stop calling/emailing everyone every few weeks to “reschedule” a month out, and saying they will release information “soon” on their website about reopening. There’s no way things should just start opening up because numbers look ok for a while, at least we shouldn’t be. But I feel like this situation is so nuanced and there needs to be an open dialogue between the state and local governments about the effects to their individual economies and residents, especially in Anaheim as it pertains to DLR and the surrounding industries. People lived off of those wages.

I’m sure there’s plenty of conversation going on with Disneyland behind the scenes. We’re just not privy to those discussions.

Which honestly, I think is what’s so frustrating. More transparency here would be so helpful not just for people wanting to go to DLR but also cast members, local Anaheim hotels, etc. How can you effectively budget for this situation when you have no idea what the other end is thinking?

You’re lucky to get a test in CA IF you have symptoms where I’m at. And it takes 2-3 weeks to get your result. No I’m not exaggerating. No way in heck is Disney providing on-demand CM testing in CA when sick people in the same state have trouble getting tested because everything is so backed up. If DLR needs to do that settle in for a very, very long wait to reopen.

Our local school district switched from their hybrid plan to remote learning bc of delays in testing results in our county. I have a feeling this is the next barrier to reopening for a lot of things.... you can’t really do effectively tracing with test delays that long. I’m betting our town’s university will follow suit and switch to remote learning next.

I’d imagine that could be part of union concerns too?

We rescheduled our March 2020 trip to February 2021. Here is hoping that the parks are not still closed by then!

I read an article last night about something called a rapid antigen test. The current testing simply isn't adequate due to scarcity and demand. There are other tests that are done at home, read in a few minutes (something along the lines of a home pregnancy test format), and cost very little ($1). The catch is that they aren't as accurate, but since you could test every day, the accuracy isn't as important since a negative result if the person actually has covid generally means that it was too early for that kind of test to detect it. Since covid-19 multiplies so rapidly, it's very likely it would show up the next day. Of course, a lot of people aren't going to want to spend $1/day and test themselves if they don't feel sick, but it's an interesting idea and I can see how it could be very useful since our current testing protocols have failed. I was wondering if places like Disneyland could utilize this type of testing with CMs?

Going to cancel October and hold on hope for December. Seems like a long shot now. Desert Inn has the calendar blocked to November. Smh

We just got our machine that does a 90 minute turn around for COVID testing.

The company I'm heavily invested in/watching licensed a saliva test with a 30 minute turnaround from Columbia University and I'm waiting for the emergency use authorization to come through from the FDA. That will be the game changer, IMO.

On the Disney front -- I outright cancelled my AUL reservation in February 2021, I'm booked for the end of April 2021 at VGC.

If I were a betting man, I'd put (a tiny bit of) money on an early November reopen, at this point.

Its a pretty mixed bag; I'm in Northern California (not far from the aforementioned Six Flags Vallejo - many of the locals with passes were pleased to be able to visit it like a zoo).
Dad went fishing in Alaska last week, he got a test done before flying so he could land with a negative result, and got another one when he came back so he wouldn't have to quarantine for too long for Mom's sake. Both test results came back in 2 business days. They had to call around to a lot of different testing sites to find ones that came back that quickly, but they said the process was very easy once they found the site that processed in the time they needed (apparently some other sites locally have the 7-10 day turnaround).
About 2 weeks prior to that my DS13 had a low fever for about 24 hours, we called his doctor to see if he could get a test and the doctor said with only 1 symptom they didn't want to allocate a test to him. :confused3

It took my husband 13 days to get his results from the county testing (awhile back). He did one with his doctor recently and it came back in 6 days.
Yeah. I think the general conclusion for our Disneyland thead here then is under today’s currently in use tech Disney having tests available on employee demand is just not practical in CA. If that’s required we can just settle in for an even longer wait. Obviously if rapid test tech like mentioned above becomes widely available then it could be something Disney could offer but mass rollout of that is a ways off.

(I delved into this rabbit hole so I’m trying to fill it in before a certain Lucky rabbit fills it in mod-style for getting too off topic making me feel DIS shame 🤣)

The nasal swab PCR testing simply takes time and man power. We do our testing in-house and typical turn around times 24 hours; but it's a herculean task to keep up the constant resupply and staff -- we're very fortunate to has this ability for our health system but most others that primarily sending out to the large labs to run: ARUP, Quest, Labcorp, are the ones with 5+ days returns. :(

This is the primary issue currently and why the Point of care Antigen test is gaining popularity despite the relatively low sensitivity and moderate specificity. -- turnaround times. This is what Gov of Ohio had and then subsequent PCR testing negative -- probably a false positive.

So if Disney is going to deploy internally a monitoring system, they have to have a robust plan on what the testing is, the criteria, and finally a contact tracing plan internally. They can certainly do this and have the funding and modeling to do it. They already know schedules and simple matter of scraping MDE data or whatever CMs carry that their phones/communications devices. It would be quite interesting to deploy and yet another role model type of 'pilot case' where Disney can showcase and get preferential treatment on reopening --- if it wanted such.

Edit.. this strategy may actually get DLR not only open but stay open by showing a good protective environment for both CM and it's patrons. It is a bit much to do even for a Dow30 company

We’ve circled the topic of on-site testing before and from what I recall (rumors/WDW insider cast member reports) Disney’s also not too eager to test on-site bc then those tests are considered on-property cases which is bad juju for them.

Unfortunately, based on the article posted a page or so back, WDW doesn’t seem to be actively informing cast members when another coworker tests positive. At least based on that cast members experience.. Which is so totally uncool if that’s true.

Let's get the discussion back on DLR, please. As the pp said, this topic of testing and what Disney is doing/not doing has been circled before. So let's get back to discussing the parks and reopening. Thank you.

So let's get back to discussing the parks and reopening.

In that spirit, I wonder when DLR reopens what type of hours they will have. WDW’s hours have been cut so short and today they announced even shorter hours for September.

I love the parks at night... Even without shows, just strolling through New Orleans Square or Pixar Pier holds such happy feels for me. I wonder if the larger AP crowd, with more tendency to head down later in the day, might give them cause to have later hours?

We love the parks at night, too! I noticed that WDW had announced shorter hours. For cost cutting (and maybe safety, too), that isn't too surprising right now. Someone had posted that the end of daylight savings would be welcome so that they could enjoy darker evenings in the parks even with earlier hours.
