Disneyland Reopening Speculation Superthread

My takeaways on ‘new’ things to learn from this:
  • Legal action is clearly on the way, they are speaking out loud and clear like we’ve never seen so far. The hope is for dialogue and collaboration but they won’t have a choice if that won’t work.
  • Universal and Disney never received clear reports after park visits from state officials. They did their visits and then guidelines came out without including theme parks.
  • There had never been a clear negotiation between theme parks and the governor- he’s clearly shut them out of the conversation from the get go.
  • Dr. Gally never actually came to Disneyland- he just sent his staff.
My favorite part? The clear argument of how these guidelines are being unfairly applied while similar businesses (zoos, theaters, etc) are open. Kim Irwin (Universal) really nailed that part.

They need to stop hoping for conversation with the state and just go for the lawsuit. The state clearly doesn't want to talk.

I have a feeling they’re worried about either how it will impact their image OR their legal team isn’t too confident of the outcome.

I also loved how Kim Irwin emphasized how reopening isn’t even going to make them a profit and how they are more concerned with getting up and running to get people back to work. Sorry, I’m fan girling over here- she is one great public speaker!

Oh and they also all pleaded with people to reach out to the governor! So write those comments folks! Probably means more coming from residents I imagine but still.

Now that there are guidelines set....there can be official legal negotiations and remedies. Prior to yesterday, if was all 'hey what do you think. What do you want' stuff.

I'm sure there will be adjustments and considerations had and ways forward; perhaps 'giving credit' for stringent protocols like how credit is given to counties for higher testing/tracing capabilities.

[Mod edit: Response to question how will Disney and DLR fare.]

My fear and concern isn't the Disney company, it's the employees. I, too, know that Disney will get through this and we will return. Thirty-two weeks with no work (and no end in sight) has really put a burden on their lives. So many folks have been employed at the Disney (and Universal and Knott's) parks for 20 and 30 plus years. It's more than just a job - it's their life.

You can watch the entire theme park press conference on the FB page.

This is the conference that has generated all the buzz today and includes Universal’s comment on considering a food festival although it’s much more vague in this than it appears to be when I’ve seen it in news articles.
They are all being far more charitable than I would be. What color/phase do you suppose FL in August was? Because, I was 100% OK with the parks being open even then. No idea how anyone from Ghaly's office went to FL and toured the parks and could come to the conclusion that there was any reason to keep the parks closed. I have to say the folks here had it nailed - there was never a negotiation or even a discussion with the parks. So mad right now.

...
Also, does anyone know if you do request a refund, do you get it right away? Meaning you don’t have to wait for the parks to reopen for it to be processed?
AP refunds. We paid in full for flex passes that would have expired at the end of May so we don’t have a ton of time that we missed on . I was just holding out for the extension but now that it seems much farther away, I’m re-thinking that.
If you want a refund, call to request that. Ask for a lead (calmly, politely) if the CM cannot help you first. Thanks for posting this! That press conference was very informative. Here's what I think about the stuff that the Legoland, Knotts Berry Farm, Universal, and Disneyland executives talked about:

  1. They are all frustrated and MAD at the state of CA.
  2. Universal especially was frustrated that after the CA visit to the Universal Orlando parks, CA promised to share their feedback & suggestions to Universal. Universal is still waiting for that feedback.
  3. Same thing with the Disney parks. Dr. Ghaly's staff has also visited Disneyland in person apparently for several hours. Disneyland wants the CA state officials' feedback. They haven't received any.
  4. There are basically NO conversations from the CA state officials to the large theme parks.
  5. Dr. Ghaly's staff visited Disneyland, but Dr. Ghaly did not. Disneyland president was disappointed by this, but said that Dr. Ghaly's staff were really thorough.
  6. It's pretty clear that there are no negotiations & collaboration going on from the state to the theme park operators.
  7. The theme parks association was asked if there will be lawsuits and they said that "all options are on the table." If that isn't an admission that they are going to look at pursuing legal action, I don't know WHAT is.
  8. The theme parks exec seemed to me to be genuinely upset over all of the people they've had to lay off. Like...it's not just for show for the cameras. And in the dog-eat-dog business world, that's kind of nice to see for a change.
  9. The theme park execs have been pretty quiet up until these latest developments, but now I think it's a situation in which the gloves are coming off. And the theme park businesses in CA are going in for a good fight with the state of CA's executive branch of the government.
  10. It'll be interesting to watch how this continues to play out.

I spoke to someone in Newsom’s office today.....he indicated that they had received A LOT of feedback.
I know this sounds like first world problems, but these kids have been through a lot.
I have a 4 1/2 at home, and while she is such a trooper she has these moments of honesty that are just heartbreaking about missing going to school and going to Disneyland. If I get those two back it’ll be a huge step forward with regards to her psyche. I took her to a park the other day to play and it unlocked a joy in her that was so nice to see again. Especially when she “made a new friend” she said “it’s been so long since I made a new friend” 💔

Honestly my concern is more for the employees and surrounding businesses. I also think the current layoffs and any more that follow will have affects that last years. Good workers are not easy to find. Some may wait it out but training a good CM can take a while and losing people that have been with Disney for years is going to be noticeable when they are replaced with people who may just be looking for a paycheck.

I think the upcoming holiday season (i.e. lots of travel and private gatherings) has Newsom and Ghaly wringing their hands with worry, and these new guidelines are their attempt at stalling the opening of large theme parks until the holidays are over. Even if parks do bring up a lawsuit, wouldn't the process take longer than the next two months anyway? Provided that infections don't skyrocket in the next few months, I have a feeling that the state will "revisit" the guidelines sometime early next year, after the holidays.

Did anyone else find it sort of odd that at the end of the press conference, several park presidents said that one of the next steps was to understand how the tier-qualifying data is calculated so they could figure out how to get their communities to yellow tier? They kind of seemed to suggest that there might be a way to game the numbers, but no matter what it seemed strange that theme park officials would view that as part of their job.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. But San Francisco county go to move down to yellow b/c their case rate was adjusted. It was adjusted b/c they had a high number of tests. So maybe counties will decide to do a mass testing plan to help the numbers? OC is still in red, but there are a few times when they bordered orange. I could be wrong though. Honestly the way they calculate the numbers confuses me lol.

I took this as them being skeptical of San Fran truly meeting those metrics to be in the yellow OR questioning using that county as the example for the rest to follow. Which I immediately thought too, so many tech companies means so many more people can work from home. My cousin and his husband live downtown there and they said it’s a ghost town because everyone is working from home. Makes a big difference. But I could be wrong- maybe they’re thinking something entirely different but I noticed this too. They brought it up more than once.

I went off to Google and you’re right... this article explains how that along with the new equity matrix pushed them quicker into yellow.

So yeah, I can see the point of raising that question and asking for guidance (ie-resources) so other counties can follow the same steps.
