Seems more and more like sons, daughters (...grandsons and granddaughters) are quick to go for their first tattoo once they turn 18.

(Even if later they might regret not having given it more thought...)

It used to be that sailors and bikers were the ones to get tattoos, several decades back; but now it seems like in almost every family with young ppl turning 18 is seeing them head for the tattoo parlor.

Regarding this apparent strong trend, are ppl's families any different?

Seems to me you've asked this question already. Why the fascination?

Youngest is currently 16 and is looking along with friends. It's possible they'll get it before their 18 without our permission. It can be done unfortunately. Oldest almost 18 isn't interested. Been showing the both of them my tattoo removal process so they think long and hard before getting one.

It was a thing to do when I was in high school 25 years ago. Many of my friends got them as soon as they turned 18 or shortly thereafter. The large majority of them regret it now. I got my first tattoo at 35, my second at 38. I told my kids that they are welcome to get tattoos when they are 18, but it had better be something that they really want and has meaning to them.

Agree- I graduated in 95 and it was a thing back then. I got my first one at age 17 the day after senior prom- convinced the guy I was 18. Now they’re probably more strict on the checking of ages lol. I also pierced my own ears like 8 holes each, got a nose ring and a belly button ring that same year once I was at college. So yeah.....it has been a pretty “normal” thing for a while.

My DD got her first one at 18.....went with a friend.
It is a small Japanese symbol on her left inner ankle. She was a soccer player and the symbol means strength. It is on her weakest leg.

You seem to have a real fixation on body modification. I can't imagine spending so much time thinking about what other people, especially people half my age (or less) are doing with their own skin.

My daughter got her first and so far only tattoo at 18. It is a small semi-colon with wings that give the impression of a butterfly, and it is on the inside of her wrist where it is easily concealed by a Fitbit band or bracelet. She plans to spend a gap year between undergrad and grad school teaching English in Japan, where tattoos are still quite taboo, so she was deliberate about getting something that could easily be concealed and doesn't plan to get any others until after she returns. My son is 23 and doesn't have any; he's a car guy and jokes that he'd never waste his "parts money" on a tattoo.

Another body mod question? What could possibly be the motivation for ask---

We got our son his first tattoo when he was 3. It made it so much easier to find him at the pools at WDW. He really stood out against all those peeling press on tattoos they sell on property.
The ear and lip piercings followed over the next couple of years.
