What is the closest escape you have had from a dangerous situation?

up one night due to insomnia. heard what sounded like a couple of gunshots. i live in the country so it's not unusual-except at 3 in the morning and what seemed like inside the house. woke dh up, told him i'm calling the fire department b/c something's going on with the house but we need to get out now. next day at first light you could see the cracks in the drywall-roof was collapsing due to record breaking snow.

In HS my car broke down in a McDonald's parking lot and a couple of guys tried to take some rather unsavory advantage of the situation.

Have had a horse rear and fall over on me.

Had a horse kick me into a cement wall (lost consciousness for 30 seconds).

Have had a horse bolt with me in the woods. Gallop out of control for about 2 miles before dumping me into a tree.

Roll over car accident.

I'm sure there were other near misses. But I've walked away from all unscathed.

Usually on the freeway. Occasionally I got really close to hitting someone else, and part of it was my inattention. You know hard braking or even where the tires screech from an evasive maneuver and it felt really close to flipping over. Or coming close to hitting something, whether it was an appliance, a deer, or even a person. Once I saw someone who was staggering across the lanes on the freeway. Not someone just trying to run through but looked intoxicated, mentally ill, or something. Looked like a homeless guy and no way of knowing what the deal was, but I was glad that I didn't hit him.

Barely missed hitting a deer on the highway several years ago. It was dark and the next thing I know it’s right in front of me clear as day in my headlights. I jerked the wheel and missed it. I don’t even remember jerking the wheel and I honestly can’t believe I didn’t hit it cause it was right in front of me. I swear it was like someone else took over. Talk about Jesus take the wheel.

I hit a moose on the Glenn Highway in Alaska. Luckily, I saw it entering the freeway and was able to change lanes. I'd have hit it straight on if a car had been in the other lane. As it was, it rolled along the passenger side of the car, damaging both doors and taking the mirror off, but not even activating the air bags. It got up and walked away so hoping it survived.

I was supposed to be at this winery the day of the collapse. 2 days before someone under 21 decided to join our weekend trip so decide to go somewhere else instead.

Wow, Jennasis, you've had some mishaps with the horses, haven't you? I used to ride, when I was a teenager, and thankfully, I never had those experiences. More than one time while we were galloping the horses in an open field, they would head to the woods and into those low branches on trees. But we ducked and made it, LOL. You've gotta love horses to do that stuff. I still love horses, but am too old now to ride them.

We live in black bear country, and the young males come into our yards every Spring looking for food. We are used to it.
However, one year we had a huge nuisance bear who scared me! One time, I was out in our side yard to get the clothes off the line. I noticed one of my tops was on the ground and there was no wind to blow it off. I picked it up and noticed a grass stained, muddy claw mark across the chest!!! Then, I smelled a truly awful smell which I have never smelled before. It was rank. It was coming from behind a huge 50 foot fir tree and scrubs, about 15 feet from me. I quickly got one of my topsand scurried to the house. I know it was within feet from me!
Then another time, I got up at dawn and noticed a huge bear in our front yard at the bird feeder. It got down on all fours and started walking to me. I was looking out our front windows which are about 15 feet wide. I don't know if he saw his reflection and thought I was a threat or what. He just kept coming and looking at me with those dead eyes. Well, I now know what I'll do when I;m scared, I'll just stand there and die! I was frozen to the spot just watching that huge beast come closer. I yelled at my husband who was still in bed and he ran to the front door and yelled at it. Thankfully, it turned and lumbered away! He asked why I didn't move, and I said that I couldn't move!!!
Every year we have bears, and it is now spring time and we will see them again. And yes, I love where we live:)

Was driving a subcompact car in the right hand lane when a Semi, without signaling, started to make a right hand turn from the center lane. Luckily I was paying attention and so was the person behind me so accident was avoided. To be clear, the Semi had been in the center lane for several miles, and never signaled a change so it wasn't just a wide turn thing. I had to park and sit for about twenty minutes to calm down afterward.

ETA: there have been scarier things, but this is a family board

Wow. Just wondering, do you recall what the depth of the snow on the roof was?

Many years ago I was driving on a highway and a loose truck tire came rolling toward me. Narrow miss. Just a few years ago something similar happened to someone I know, her husband was killed and she was badly injured when a tire hit their car.

We were at my parents' friends house, which was located in the woods. It was Winter, and we went to see if the lake nearby had frozen over. It was me, my sister, their daughter, and their son Kevin, who was a few years older than the rest of us. The lake was iced over and we were daring each other to step on it, which was dumb in and of itself, but then Kevin thought he'd be funny and pushed me onto the ice. I fell and slid a few feet away from where everyone was standing, and all I heard was Crack! Crack! Crack! I don't know how I managed it, but I turned myself around and crawled back off the ice just as it all collapsed and broke.

Geez, haven't thought about this incident in decades. It could have been really bad.

Traveling down a highway in Kansas with my kindergartener, my best friend and her toddler. The sky turned green, wind picked up and it began hailing. We knew it meant a tornado was in the area and saw cars ahead of us pulled over. So we pulled over to the side of the road and carried the kids out of the car, trying to protect them from the hail. There was a large group of people huddled under the overpass in front of us, so we joined them. The noise was like a freight train as we watched the tornado 🌪 head towards us, then suddenly veered off. Then the silence was deafening. The kids didn’t even cry at first.

We felt happy, relieved and safe until the highway patrol car pulled up. The officers exited the vehicle screaming at us for sheltering under the overpass. That was the exact wrong thing to do, evidently.
But we survived anyway.
