Dis Breast Cancer Survivors Part IV - GAGWTA

Thank you all for the get well wishes. I'd say by Friday even I was feeling much better. I was even trusted to run errands by myself over the weekend! Come Sunday I started to get a headcold with congestion and a little cough. No fever or anything but that first sneeze was terrifying 🤣. Still feeling crumby today but on the mend. Got the call to schedule my first infusion- Feb 8th. I feel somewhat relieved knowing the next step is in motion and in a few months this part will in the past. The center sent me a bunch of medications through the mail, the anti nausea stuff and the lidocaine topical. The nurse today didn't tell me the bring it or use the lidocaine as prep but I remember reading that so I'll have to call back and check. She did say to start taking Claritin this weekend for the neulasta shot. Anyone have experience with neulasta injection?
I'll be having my fav foods the rest of this week and taking your tips to stay away from my favs while on therapy. Any other foods I should avoid not necessarily that I might end up disliking for years but more thay might have interactions?
@#1hoosierfan, how are you feeling with your treatments?
I've had neulasta as well and continue to get it now. When I did chemo initially they did the shots and I did have some issues with bone aches. Claritin definitely helps as @China Expat said. This go round they use the on-body injector so I don't have to come back in for the shot. I've really had no issues with it this time at all and don't even have to take claritin to help.

I have finished 7 rounds of Taxol. I have done really really well with treatment. I am tired and achey days 3-5, but I have had no nausea, mouth sores, nail changes, or neuropathy that many people complain of. Hopefully it stays that way.

I will be thinking of you for a smooth treatment as they start.
So good to hear you are doing well! You are having 12 treatments of the taxol, is that correct? Your almost done high 🙌! I started with the adriamycin and cytoxan yesterday, it went really well. My blood pressure has been high lately so when I got there it was 156/95 and it didn't really improve. I need to keep an eye on that. I didn't feel anything while the meds were being administer and I was fine all last night and today so far. Is this the calm before the storm? The nurse said if I didn't have morning sickness with my kids, and I am not prone to motion sickness I should do pretty good in the nausea department. Hope so 🙏.

I hadthe neulasta shot; no side effects or issues. Avoid grapefruit. The claritin worked wonders!
Good to hear! I don't like citrus anyway so no problem there. Started taking the Claritin this weekend and the Neulasta started clicking about 30 mins ago. Hoping for smooth sailing the next few days.

Glad things went well! Taking Claritin with taxol started after my time. I’ve heard good reports.

Oh my gosh.....I am so far behind in reading posts!!! I just caught up. Whew....

Welcome to #1hoosierfan and CaleCakes !! Sorry I haven't responded earlier. I took some time off from the DISBoards.

#hoosierfan It sounds like you had a rough start to your journey. I can understand that for sure. I had a gall bladder attack the day after my port placement and it changed my plan of treatment. I had a lumpectomy and gall bladder removal about a week or two later. I then had to recover for 6 weeks before starting my chemo. Glad to hear the Taxol is going OK for you.

CaleCakes I was diagnosed on June 30, 2021 with invasive ductal carcinoma that is a triple negative cancer. I had 12 weeks of Carboplatin(this one was only every third week) and Taxol and I am having 4 treatments of Adriamycin and Cytoxan every three weeks(because of insurance meddling). My 3rd treatment is Friday and then I will have one more left. WOOHOO!! And then I will have a month off before starting radiation.

To join the wig conversation, I have 2 wigs although I have yet to wear either one. I pretty much stay home unless I am driving in the car to take/pickup my daughter for work or some outing or going to the Cancer Center or some other doctor appointment or test. I mostly wear the softie hats but for fun I like to wear a bandana or the headscarfs with the fabric that hangs down like a low ponytail. Sorry--don't know what to call them...lol I figure I will wear the wigs once my immune system has recovered enough that I can go into stores or to restaurants.

A quick update from me...

I had a CT and bone scan a few weeks ago and the disease remains stable with no progression and again even some signs of decreased activity, so that's great news and we will continue on my monthly regimen of doxyrubicin.

I'm definitely dealing with some cumulative effects from the treatments, but still managing.

I have an echocardiogram scheduled in a couple of weeks to look for any signs of congestive heart failure. Doxyrubicin is known to cause CHF after exceeding the recommended number of doses, but since it's controlling the cancer spread, we want to keep using it as long as we can and I tolerate it. The CT did seem to show some increase in some pleural thickening etc and I do feel like I get winded more easily than I used to, so that worries me a bit that there could be some CHF starting. We will just have to wait for the Echo results to know for sure. But for now, I just keep trudging along and thankful the disease is being held in check for now.

Good afternoon to all!
Welcome to #1hoosierfan and CaleCakes - you have found a good place. The ladies here have a wealth of knowledge and information to share and I admire their strength and courage. They have adopted me and let me hang out here. I have thyroid cancer twice so far.
Zelly B and Amanda - Thinking of you both

My medical adventures continue. The new cardiologist gave me lasix and I have lost 12 lbs of fluid in my legs/feet. I had an echo and he said my heart is pumping good. The tech was fascinated with my aortic implant. My bp is not stable. I see him again the 28th. Today I finally got my permanent cap on one tooth.

And in other news…3 houses down from us a man was murdered. It’s a known drug place. Never heard the gunshots. Ds1 loves his new job. Dil dreading going back to nyc. It’s a 4 hour train round trip every 3 days. Ds2 and dil had her sister living with them. That didn’t go well. Ds3 passed his critical care certification yest. Now he needs to finish internship hours and his womens health class. He learned to stitch and now has to do iuds on a simulator part. He goes to Disney end of month. Offsite and only going to Epcot and another park. He is not planning it and dreading the plans made. Can’t believe he graduates in May.
GAGWTA. Thinking of you all.

Hello everyone,
I've been meaning to check in- it's been busy in my life lately and I feel like I haven't been resting as much as I should be. DS6 had the sniffles last week so he was home from school a few days now this week its DD4 with flu A and her fever has been going strong for 4 days now. Pretty scray. Also my aunt came to visit so we were out and about a lot, going out to eat and we went to the Spa one day but I just say there and enjoyed the scenery by the pool I didn't get any treatment by order of my oncologist.

I has my 3rd round of ACT yesterday so just one more to go 🙌. Then I'll start the taxol in April for 12 weeks. I lost my hair within 2 days after the 2nd treatment so on Feb 24th. I have to say it's not as bad as I was anticipating. I can't say I'm confident enough to be walking around in public without a cover on but I have several covers to mix things up. I find I like the turban or slouch style ones better than the ones with the tie in the back. On me those look rather pirate-y. I hosted a team gathering for work and although I got some looks and heard some whispers everyone was very respectful. I wad pretty nervous going into in but thought "what kind of leader would I be if i hid for months". I feel much better that I went.

As far as other symptoms I have been pretty luck- no nausea or vomiting, no mouth sores, no bone pain from the neulasta, and my nails are looking pretty normal. I've been painting them with the OPI nail envy every other day and keeping them short. My appetite is ravenous so I haven't lost any weight and things still taste the same but I do have a slight burned tongue taste going on. Oh and my left contact caused some irritation so I had to use drops for a few days. Probably the chemo drying out everything. My pcp ordered some blood work and wasn't happy with my liver function numbers so I've repeated blood work 3 times for him in the last 2 weeks and also had a complete abdominal ultrasound. Results pending. He also prescribed some meds for my blood pressure since I was having rapid heart rate after the first round of chemo but I haven't had that since. I stopped drinking coffee and now that I know what to expect on chemo days and the few days after I have been less anxious so I think that helped. I didn't end up taking the medication for blood pressure. It was 133/82 yesterday which I see as an improvement so I'll just keep watching it.

I had a cruise booked back in 2020 that we rescheduled to 2021 but then ended up with a future cruise credit that I have to use this year by September and book by April. We played around with some dates and found one in July that seems work with kids camps and my husband's work schedule so we went ahead and booked it. I'm not excited about the ports-just western Caribbean- but I'm excited to sail from our new home port with is Galveston now. I've been out of there before but not as my home port and not being able to drive there. If all goes as planned I should be done the taxol by the end of June so a few weeks between that and the cruise. I did ask the rep if it was movable again and she said yes. No biggie if we don't make it but I figured surgery will be in August then back to school so July seemed the best fit.

#luvmarypoppins wow a murder in your neighborhood wow that is scary. We had a suicide here around the corner not too long ago and the family did an estate sale a few weeks ago. My husband went and said it was eerie so he left pretty much right away.

Happy to read others are having good check ups and scans. Never thought I'd be one to carry this burden but so happy to have this outlet to share with.

All sound good and you’re working on the BP! Yay for the new tooth! A murder in the neighborhood must’ve been pretty scary! Your son has come a long way - I remember when he was first thinking about nursing school. Good luck to him!

@CaleCakes It sounds like things are going pretty well for you with the exception of a few bumps, which is probably pretty normal, I’d say. But I’m so glad things are moving along and you have your cruise to look forward to! We did a cruise about a month after my last chemo, as well. It was fine, and I actually felt really good, with sort of a new outlook on life. Thanks for checking in.

I have really bad allergies, like shots, a prescription and 2 OTC every day bad. Chemo was horrible for my nasal and mucous tissue. I was completely dried out for well over a year. I had to start seeing an ophthalmologist, so you might want to consider seeing one if the dry eyes continue. It probably didn’t help that I started getting old lady eyes about the same time, but I have never returned to contacts. The irritation was just too much. I still don’t have dry eye disease, but I think all the years of eye digging from allergies before and after chemo just make glasses easier. I also had major issue with a dry, runny and irritated nose. When I finally went to ENT, she pretty much just said it takes a while for everything to relubricate. She did recommend Nasogel from Neilmed. It is pure saline that you spray in nose so no side effects or limits on use. I still use it and can go through a bottle a month during cedar and other prime allergy seasons.

It is fantastic that your symptoms are mostly nuisance level and you are keeping as much normality in your life as possible. I hope you have a nice chemo-is-over cruise with your family.

Great suggestions, 3threebabies! Good to hear from you!

Just a quick check in. Ds3 gave Dh and I a gift no one wants - covid!! Ugh!!
He thinks he got it at a bar when he went with some friends.
Dh and I just did a telehealth visit with a np from our pcp’s group. She is giving us Paxlovid. Ds got it and it really helped him.
We just have flu like symptoms so far except Dh had really low bp last night but it got resolved thanks to ds.
Thurs. Ds is suppose to go to Disney. I don’t know if that will work out. We shall see.

Ugh.....having covid is a bummer. We all had it again in early January. Get lots of rest and fluids. Keep up on the vitamin D3 and vitamin C.

Had my last chemo treatment on Friday. Woohoo!!! Super tired as usual but optimistic knowing my energy will start coming back this weekend. I have an appointment with my oncologist on Friday. If all is well, she will release me to my surgeon to remove my port. Looking forward to getting that out. My appointment with the radiology oncologist is next week.

I hope everyone is doing well. :flower3:

Great to read this!

Started with the taxol today. I was nervous to get started because of what I've read of people having reactions within the first few mins, someone here did sorry I can't remember who and scrolled back some but didn't see it. Anyways I did not thankfully and other than the coughing fit I had during the session everything went textbook. I have had major congestion for several weeks and while that seems to be clearing I now have post nasal drip which has resulted in some vicious coughing fits. I felt so embarrassed in the infusion room- it went on for a good 10 mins I just wanted to run and hide. They're really bad at night as soon as I try to be on any position other that propped straight up I start coughing. I am really hoping it ends soon.

I feel like the last 2 weeks were a bust. I was fairly nauseous from the last dose of AC for a good week, and nothing is appetizing (I lost 5 pounds). The only things that taste good/normal is milk and peanut butter crackers. I eat other things because i know i have to but they taste like nothing. I have a sicky sweet taste going on not metallic. My kids were both sick with whatever is floating around their school- I think it's norovirus. What's the deal with kids standing by the bed in the middle of the night saying mom I'm throwing up and sure enough it's everywhere. Had my share of that these last 2 weeks.

@3threebabies, when you had dry eyes were they burning? I have been able to get my contacts in for a few hours a day but man do my eyes burn. I use those systane drops but I don't think they really do anything. When I saw the eye doctor she said I could have developed an allergy to this brand of contact since I've used them for so many years to maybe try a new brand. Idk.

@Grace&Carolinesmom, congrats on finishing treatment 🥳. Did you ring the bell? I see it on the wall at my place, saw one lady ring it so far and it was pretty anticlimactic. Did you get cleared to have the port removed? Oh how I can't wait for that day! I have a surgery date of July 26th for the double mastectomy and reconstruction so I imagine my port comes out thay day. Bye port.

I've been reading a lot about the ovary removal surgery and hysterectomy, and recovery. My oncologist says if in 4 weeks of the taxol my numbers are good she wants me to get this over with. Idk why but I am do on the fence about this. I am like torn between the whole thing or just the ovaries and tubes.

As far as other symptoms, I see that the nail beds on my thumbs are turning dark. I'm going to watch thay closely not that I can stop it but I keep them painted with the clear polish and use ice packs during treatment. Someone suggested frozen wash cloths a few times a day.

Saw a friend over the weekend and confessed what I'm going through. Turns out her bestie has brca1 positive too and has been through all of this twice. She finally had the double mastectomy and down stairs done and she is doing great. My friend is planning for the 3 of us to get together for coffee this weekend so I can pick her brain. I like my center and all, it's quiet, but I feel like it's too quiet. I read about all these informative centers with tons of resources but unless I read about it and ask the nurses they don't say much. I think it'll help to sit with someone and really ask what to expect.

I have also been very lazy lately. I have so many things I want to do, like make photo books for every year since the kids were born, but I have done nothing. I'm in a funk.

Wow this post got really long, sorry about that. I guess I should go write all of this in my journal now lol.

Edited to fix ACT to AC
