I love credit cards so much! v5.0 - 2022 (see first page for add'l details)

My son just turned 18 last week and has been an AU on my Chase Freedom for perhaps a year (maybe not quite that long... I can't remember).

Do you think it better for him to apply for the student Discover, or for his own CF? I like Chase just because I am familiar with them (website, app, etc). I've never had a Discover.

To be clear, he himself isn't interested in points or miles, really- he just wants his own card so he can be a real adult now.

I'd pull his cr and see what his score is and hoe long the au has been on there and go from there.

We got the ones in the orange and white boxes - very useful when my wife got Covid. We thought they were easy to use - we actually ordered more of them of Amazon.

Thanks for your perspective on this. We have a stack of them (plus some Binax we bought) and DH used a few after he got an exposure notice at work and didn't have any issues, but I haven't tried them myself.

Well I'm on way to reworking the canceled Greek cruise, so an update and then a question for the hive mind here:

With the 200% future sailing credit and free access key offered since my October cruise was scrapped, I was able to add a Bahamas sailing next month (surprise trip!) and I moved my exact Greece cruise to 2023 - same week, same boat, same cabin, all of it. I am awaiting my access key so I can book the October sailing out of Barcelona meaning we'll do the Mediterranean this October. With all of that, I still have over $2k in credits left to spend. 😲

Getting flights to Miami for next month was way harder than it should have been with mileage prices out the wazoo. I ended up paying cash for a nonstop from CVG on Frontier for the way down and used Southwest points for the way home. Cash prices were like $1k roundtrip... for a 2 hour flight on legacy carriers. In economy. Umm no!

NOW THE QUESTION:

Would it be better (easier?) to just cancel my flights to Athens, redeposit the miles to Delta and then book fresh to Spain... or try to do a change ticket? The new itinerary is going to be more complicated with different beginning and ending cities...

Congrats on making the very best out of your situation!

As for the flights, I haven't dealt with Delta, so I don't really know. We just changed some AF tickets and since we had to call (and stay on line forever) to either cancel or move the flight we opted to just cancel on the phone and rebook online when the flights we wanted became available.

Well my bad luck with SW continues. My Oct flight was cancelled during that big SW debacle/sickout. Flying again today and our 10 am flight got cancelled when we arrived from our Wichita flight to St Louis. Now waiting for our rebooked flight at 4:30. Have been up since 3:30 am. Had purchased Genie and ILL for GotG and had a SDD LL reserved for this evening. I called and was able to get a refund for both luckily. Now just REALLY hoping our 4:30 flight happens.

If you are interested in points, then chose a card for him that will earn him the points (as long as they can be transferred to you and you can meet the MSR). When dd was young (min. age for Chase) I added her as an AU to my Hyatt card. Last year I applied for the CSP (in her name instant approval), met the MSR, called Chase with her present and transferred the URs to my account. I just met the MSR for her Hilton Surpass and I will transfer the points to my HH account.

Thank you...

I tried to set him up in CK and it says his request cannot be completed at this time, so then I went to the three bureaus to get the free one there and all three of them are saying the request cannot be completed.

I don't know whether it's because he is barely 18 and there's just a delay, or whether there is something more problematic going on. Anyone else had this happen with their newly-turned 18 year old??

Congrats on the new itineraries! I've read amazing things about Virgin cruises and have eyed a few.

I wouldn't make any changes until you have new tickets locked down. When dd and I went to London last month I was able to book Lufthansa to London via Frankfurt less than 48 hours before the flight in biz class on points. Also short hop flights in Europe tend to be much less expensive than what they are over here. However if you go this route you'd have to pick up your luggage in Athens, then check-in and clear security again. I am doing this in the spring; it's not ideal, but I was using dh's SWU which only gets me as far as Frankfurt (destination is Amsterdam).

The XR is 700 for trade in? Im gonna have to convince DH to upgrade.
With AT&T they are giving $700 on the XR trade in. You can get a 13 mini for free or a 13 for like $2.70/mo for 36 months. When I messaged them they said there is no end date yet. But ATT will also announce it's ending 3 days before. So I'm on an email list for that notice, LOL.
We're not traveling internationally but I'm curious -- do you get such a letter from your Dr? In my case, I tested at home (not PCR), but did have a virtual Drs appt. I presume they'd issue a letter like that? Also, how long is your "recovery" good for?
Not that it matters with it lifted, but you needed a letter from your doctor saying when you tested positive, that you'd recovered and were cleared for travel. It was good from 90 days of testing positive. I'm VERY happy that they lifted the testing requirements. Not sure if it was because we non-reved from Mexico, or they legit didn't care, the gate agent barely looked all our tests or letter, LOL.

I don't think his age should matter. You should be able to access any credit report with an ssn. Just as you should be able to freeze anything. If I had a kid it wouldn't be open or if it was I'd have alerts and stuff cause they can get stolen and used just as much as an adults.

Make sure you aren't using an email or username that is already associated with a ssn. I know my mom, bless her, hasn't been able to do credit karma for herself cause hers is tied to my stepdads ssn from when she accessed his. I should just use my spare email to sign her up but she's not concerned about it.

So with all the talk the other day of the 90k Amex gold offer expiring, I figured I'd try again and to my total surprise I am out of pop-up jail and was approved! Really didn't expect it, but now I already have the card in hand! This is my first non-hotel Amex - what do I need to know? I see a lot of chat on here about the dining credits, but never paid close attention. And the Uber credits? Any tips for maximizing value?
Thanks!

I'm confused on various things I've read on r/churning regarding when a card falls off 5/24. According to my cr I got my citi card on 6/17/2020. When it drops off it will put me at 4/24.

I would like to try for the hyatt biz. I can't make 7500 work and the ur would probably just be transferred to hyatt anyway. I would like this card in hand by July 9 when I pick Tux up from the vet since it'll be over 300 to get him fixed. I also have car tabs and ins that'll be about 1k total due in June which is how this 5k even works. Mom's in OR until mid aug so the grocery bills are waaaaaaay down.

Some on churning say I could apply on 6/18 and some would say to wait until July 1. Do I need to wait until july? I'd have to time asking for them to expedite the card just right with it being cobranded. Im also not sure I'll even get approved after my 2020.denial but this will be with eBay salea vs my old rental. Hoping with it being hyatt it'll also be easier than with one of the inks. So I'd like to do it as soon as I can so it has a chance to sit as I don't want to have to call.

Congratulations on getting him started on building his own credit portfolio.
I would recommend Discover student to get started. Chase likes to see a year or so of a previous card ( not AU).
Biggest thing is to educate him on how to use it. ie. Pay it off every month. Otha, things cost more and can get out of control.
Don’t worry about not being familiar with Discover. After all, it’s his card, his responsibility.

My DD turned 18 in March. She was turned down when she applied for Discover Student. She is an AU on my Amex Hilton Honors card.

Don't wait until July, 6/18 would work. I've had no issues doing just a day or two after.

Biz card approvals have loosened up since 2020, and retail bizs have had an easier time than rentals from what I've seen. So unless there's another issue at play (CL ratios, history or something) it should be easier for approval now. I've gotten a handful since it relaxed in 2021 with my small used merch retail sales biz. Good luck!

They checked just about every reason on that last denial 😂. But the only hps on the cr they use are theirs. So fingers crossed in another 8 days.
