Hurricane Ian - WDW Resorts Related Updates, Planning & Discussion

I don’t expect the cabin to get blown away. It’s more like they want people where they can see them because in this day and age so many people go out and do stupid things to post to Tiktok or whatnot. They don’t want people trying to record videos outside to post and then getting injured on Disney property.
It’s more the flooding. Central FL may get 24”, yes, 2 feet, of rain.

At OKW they said that Olivia’s open for breakfast and maybe goods to go. They have some food in the shop but not a lot of choice. They are doing lunch kits tomorrow depending on what they get delivered. Got some DVDs and a board game on loan. Never been in a hurricane before so quite worried.

If I were in Florida right now Disney is where I’d feel the safest. The key to getting through the storm is being as prepared as possible. Water, snacks, light meals that do not require cooking (in case the power goes out) enough for the two days you will not be allowed out of your room. Ask at the front desk if they have flashlights available, they did during hurricanes Irma and Matthew.
Charge all your devices and chargers, try not to let them go below 50%.
Get ice from the machine for drinks and that can be used as it melts for drinking (if the power goes out - no air conditioning or refrigerator) or brushing teeth.. Ice also helps keep things cold in the fridge if the power goes out - fill a small bag and tie it off like you would a picnic cooler when camping.
Make sure the tv in your room is working - the previous guest may have made use of a personal fire stick or roku and may not have re plugged everything back where it belongs. Most of your communication from the Resort will come via resort tv or voicemail during the storm.
You will always find someone here on the forums to chat with and keep you company while you wait the all clear should you wish. 😊
Take care & be safe!

Here now at CR Tower Club level. Absolutely no communication at all from Disney at the Contrmporary which I find interesting. If I wasn’t on this thread or Facebook, I wouldn’t know much. No signs, notices, voice mails, or any Communication regarding parks being closed, shelter in room etc. I’m happy to have this thread.

Do not worry in the slightest. The only issue you may have is boredom! Disney will take care of you.

I’m not there but the talk of flooding brought up a question… will guests staying on the first floor of any resorts be moved to 2nd or 3rd floor rooms? I mean, isn’t there a chance first floor rooms will get flooded also?

Thank you, you are all great at sharing information. Wouldn’t know anything as Disney have not been good at that. Trying not to panic but decided to pack a couple of bags in case we have to move. Great advice about the ice will sort that in the morning. We have food bought before we even knew about the storm. Only in a studio so limited cooking but grateful I have what I have. Stay safe everyone.

I am wondering the same thing. We are on the 2nd floor.

Another question is parking garages. I know there is one at AKL Kidani. Are there any other resorts with parking garages? I would be concerned with flooding in those as well.

If they don’t get moved upward.. i’m guessing the resort will provide sandbags for ground level rooms with the chance of flooding.

Stay back from windows -- Not sure how attached you are to OKW, but don't look outside; There's a chance things could be destroyed beyond belief, and it's a little upsetting.

Also, y'know, debris might fly by an break the window.

Your car may get dinged up by flying debris.

You'll hear rain lashing; You may even hear a tornado. It's scary and concerning, but you can make it out.

You are in one of the safest places in Florida. At worst you will get bored staying in your room. Do not be tempted to go out, that is never a good idea. Save some towels to put at the door, as wind can push water in on some units depending on which direction they face. They will probably ask you to bring in the balcony/patio furniture so it does not go flying.

Be sure to check your room phone for messsages. As that is how we got info. Also check the app, etc.

No they won't move from first floors. The parking garage, is only at Kidani, they might have to adjust for that.

No they won't be moved. All rooms need to keep towels in case it blows in around balcony or patio doors. If you have outside access, like OKW etc then some for the door too.
The cabins and bungalows are a risk due to wind driven water not flooding. The treehouses are a danger due to large trees possibly falling, not flooding. Those at the Campground are moved due to trees and wind damage.

Crosspost:

FYI, our scheduled plans have us checking in at Boardwalk DVC on Friday. I just received the following via email:

Hello,

As we continue to monitor the progress of Hurricane Ian, we are preparing for necessary operational adjustments based on the latest information from the National Weather Service. The hurricane may cause severe weather in the area, and for the safety of our Guests and Cast Members, we ask that you please arrive to your resort no earlier than 3 p.m. ET on Friday, Sept. 30. Guests who arrive before 3 p.m. will not be able to check in. Please feel free to reschedule your trip or cancel your stay with us; any customary cancellation fees will be waived.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding and flexibility.

It’s not so much true flooding, but there is more of a risk of places that may start leaking/building up water after hours and hours of blowing rain. I have a memory of some reports of balcony door leaks at WL from the last storm, for example. I think anywhere/any floor exposed to the right combination of consistent wind and rain/low spots that collect water can be subject to taking on water in ways that wouldn’t happen during a normal FL thunderstorm, an event that tends to end relatively quickly. The ideas above of extra towels around thresholds and such if the right idea if such situations arise.

Good advice.

If we were at any resort, we'd be closing the drapes tightly and securing them with skirt hanger clips, not cracking them to look out at all until the storm's over.

Yeah, it might feel cave-like, but I've gone through enough Kansas wind and hail storms to know there are things you'll be happier not seeing.

Sorry I disagree, this is a chance to show what one is made of, Be it a jerk or someone that says, I booked during hurricane season and I will go with the flow and be kind to everyone I come in contact with. Cast there are stressed to the max dealing with a holes and worrying about their own families and homes. This is the time to Stay Calm and
Be Kind; and yes I been there for 4 of these during our trips.
Not sure what you're disagreeing with.

I understand meremac and you to be saying pretty much the same things.

Everything you need to know is on the app or the website. They are swamped just trying relocate guests and prepare so your best bet is to check the app for information.

Finally got confirmation that out BC stay is being extended 2 nights. There was a discount of about 25% off/ not huge but they didn’t have to do anything. CM’s say restaurants will remain open and they plan on bringing in characters and have activities in the lobby. I’m hoping against hope it will all blow through by early Thursday and we can drop the second night and move on to Universal. Universal has been good in allowing us to cancel days as we need to as well.
