5 killed, 25 injured (several critical), in Colorado club mass shooting. And now, less than a week later, another.

The rise of ugly christofascism is here and we ignore it at our peril.

This, this, a million times THIS. It is a "reform" church in our community that targets us. I highly recommend people start reading up on the "neo-Calvinist" movement happening in the US these days. In my experience, they are often using the word 'reform/ed/ation' in their name somewhere, and you know them by their scarily militaristic language and emphasis on 'men being manly'. Ours has regular steak dinners for the men and boys of their congregation where they preach the virtues of 'manliness' and the importance of 'strength' (read: ability to do violence).

It's terrifying.

Background checks and red flag laws are only as good as the follow-up and process. There has to be more information about this specific case but in general we need to have a method that affords suspects due process but then easily and centrally tracks them if that due process results in some sort of flag.

All of these shootings are tragic but I personally find cases where the suspect was known to law enforcement to be even more troubling.

Laws are only good as the people charged with enforcing them. Colorado's red flag law is talked about as one of the best, a model for other states looking to do the same, because of the balance it strikes between due process/judicial oversight and public safety. But more than half of counties in the state responded to its passage by declaring themselves "2nd Amendment sanctuaries" and committing not to use the law (including the county where this happened, though they have used it a handful of times). When local law enforcement declares their refusal to follow the law as written, and the law depends primarily on law enforcement initiation for enforcement, it can't be expected to work as intended.

You are right. I think of the people as part of the process. If there isn't uniform enforcement then you just get the bad guys going to the city, state, county, or district known to be lax at enforcement.

People are not born intolerant and hateful. What I really find interesting is that the way to achieve tolerance is through education. Yet, educators will be strung up should they make any sort of attempt. Diversity in education is a joke because politicians want nothing to do with it.

How the heck was this guy able to get a gun? And he really should have been in jail for making threats like he did last year.

Thoughts and prayers only do so much but I am thinking and praying for those who lost their lives, who were injured and those who were there and who knew the victims.

One of the most sickening parts about all of this is so many of the so-called "leaders" sending "thoughts and prayers" are the same ones who fan the flames of violence against our community by constantly spewing hateful rhetoric. It's beyond insulting.

His mom is the one who called police on him for the bomb threat and kidnapping, he was charged with 3 felonies, but then mom stopped cooperating with police, the charges were dropped, and his record was sealed.

In other words, some strings were pulled mighty hard to keep this kid out of trouble.

Oh, and moms social media pages show she is a fan of guns. A big fan. It couldn't be a less surprising outcome.

Yeah, I read that she had posted something on social media about how he was ecstatic over getting full military gear for his birthday. And her dad is a MAGA politician too, of course, who publicly glorified the attempted Jan 6 insurrection.

So not surprising, no. I try really hard not to judge the way people parent, most of the time, because I used to be bad about that and since becoming a parent I have learned to keep my mouth shut, but all these stories of murderers where their parents HAD to know they were off the deep end... I don't get it. I'd like to think that if my civilian son came to me wanting flak gear for his birthday, I'd be asking some serious questions and getting him help. I don't think I could live with myself if I didn't intervene and people got hurt/killed.

What examples of leaders and what they say can you give. I don’t hear any what I’m thinking you mean elected leader spewing hatful rhetoric towards gay people in Canada or the US. I do hear it in certain religious based governments in the Middle East and Asia. But not in N America.

What is wrong with the people in this country, that continued mass shootings are considered OK? We all know there are ways to mitigate this, which we won't talk about here so nobody gets dinged, but REALLY? Why do we let this continue? I have a friend who is convinced that if all the people who support gun control laws joined the NRA, their majority membership would have a different viewpoint and there would be change in gun access/control laws. Just sayin'

Not starting another thread, I'm sure someone will, but there was another mass shooting at a Walmart in Virginia last night.
Meanwhile this was the headline in my metro on the 21st: "KCMO is seeing something that hasn't happened in five years. No one died from gun violence for two and a half weeks"

The next day on the 22nd: "The Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department is investigating a double homicide that happened not far from their East Patrol Campus on Tuesday afternoon." It was from a shooting.

It’s all so sad - pretty soon none of us are going to want to leave our house :sad2: :sad1:
To many people are hating to many people - heartbreaking!
