Live Action Snow White - too far a departure from the original?

There's a storm brewing on social media about Disney's live action remake of the classic Snow White, a masterpiece of the late Walt Disney himself. Many are saying it strays too far from the original... thoughts?

It is a 200 year old story that has been made into movies at least 24 plus times, including Snow White and the Three Stooges. It is just one more. Some will hate it, some will like it, some might love it and most won't see it.

I'll take DS because he loves Snow White even though I don't.

Probably just another average movie, I don't expect a hit out of it.

Well, I prefer them to be significantly different rather than all samey-same, so that's a good thing. I haven't seen enough from this one to judge it too hard, but the actress playing Snow White looks fine to me.

If it’s being billed as a live action version of the original animated film then it sounds terrible. If it’s just a live action retelling of the classic story then it might be ok. I’m not holding out much hope for it though.
Agreed. I haven’t been overwhelmed by any of the live action remakes, but the ones based on non-Disney stories do allow for more latitude when it comes to new interpretations. Unfortunately, their new interpretations have been fairly lackluster to me. I am not holding out much hope either.

I think it's older. Snow White takes place in 16th century Germany.

Haven’t heard anything about it. I do find it hilarious how outraged people get over Disney movies (and ride updates) though. Seriously, why get so worked up?

now, some country dude remaking Fast Car and sounding almost exactly like Tracy Chapman, and getting higher chart rankings, that’s sad.

the girl is super talented in the same mold of Halle Bailey, isn't the same group that is complaing the same group who wants to cancel decisions based on race. Halle Bailey was the most talented and totally killed it, I assume Rachel Zegler will be as well. When they cast Emma Watson and Belle, they complained she can not sing good enough. Let's face it there will always be a complaing.

I disagree on the complaints about remakes, we can't have 50 princesses, each princess is a franchise to be enjoyed through the years. Keep doing what you do Disney

Or Disney could create new stories, with new princesses that feel original and not just trying to fill a narrative. I'm all for inclusion but it feels forced more than something with the best intentions. As for 50 royals, why not? Disney would make a better impact for a changing society if more new royals were created and put on the same popular pedestal as the European tales have had on society.

I liked the remake of Beauty and the Beast; specifically, I liked that it "filled in" some gaps in the story.
I didn't care for the new Aladdin -- too much Will Smith?
I haven't seen The Little Mermaid remake, but I'd like to.
Snow White doesn't interest me, especially since they're doing away with the dwarves in favor of -- what? -- seven magical creatures?

It was the LP that complained

During a conversation regarding Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” Dinklage praised Disney for casting a Latina actress as Snow White but condemned them for continuing to present what he believed were outdated stereotypes.

“Literally no offense to anything, but I was sort of taken aback,” he said. “They were very proud to cast a Latino actress as Snow White, but you’re still telling the story of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.’ Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me. You’re progressive in one way, but you’re still making that ****ing backward story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together. Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough.”

And many other actors of the same height disagreed with him and complained how they now have certain parts they were normally casted for now taken away from them. The story is Snow White and the Seven Dwarves not magical creatures. If Disney wants to go a modern route, that's fine with me but then call it Snow White and the 7 Magical Beings and not have it set in 16th century Germany.

For the record, I agree with the merit of what he said.
