Marathon Weekend 2024

Last call for the big dis'ers list! I'm going to work on finalizing all of the details tomorrow.
Sorry for the delay. I was visiting my SiL in Dallas for Christmas and ignoring running as much as possible. Here's my info:

RACE - Dopey
NAME - Kenn
DIS'er name - camaker
Costume/Clothing - Running clothes, probably InB
Estimated Pace/Finish/POT from Registration - 3:57 marathon PoT
Club runDisney Platinum? - (Yes or No) No
Pre-Race Meet-up? - (Yes or No) Yes
Front, Middle, or Back of starting group - Probably back
Early Bird or Late Arriver - Early
Expected Race Pace - 12:00ish

And as my dear friend once told me, you only get wet once 😁

I’d still recommend a throwaway poncho for before the race.
I recommend some waterproof or resistant shoes for rain running. They really make a difference for me. The only downside are if you have Gore-Tex type trail shoes your feet usually get really hot as they aren’t breathable

The forecast for my Thanksgiving trip changed so much day to day. Like a 10 degree difference the night before vs the morning of, 10 degrees is a lot for deciding how many layers I want to run in! Since I'm packing for Dopey and Dumbo, I guess I just need to pack a bit of everything. I am short on space so for throwaways I am only doing sweaters and will bring Mylar in case I need to cover my legs. Throwaway pants are too hard to thrift! I've got my hand warmers and ponchos too, I didn't think about covering shoes so I'll throw in some mini trash bags or something for the corrals. I never run in a rain jacket but I will wear a visor if there's rain. I have vivid memories of being unprepared for rain on a run and the skies just opened up, and it was coming down so hard I couldn't even see anymore

@garneska Glad you got to have a shared moment with your mom. I am sure that was comforting for you both. Wish you had gotten better news about your injury.

Anyone know how to figure out which pace group to grab onto? I’ve been training at a 10:15 marathon pace running only, no walking. My understanding is the pace on the chart is the pace for the run and walk combined? So the 4:30 - 10:18 pace would be too quick for me? So should I look at the 4:45 - 10:52 pace group? I don’t know what I’m going to do yet. Alone or with a group. I think my pre-race anxiety is beginning to manifest and I start questioning if I should try xyz for the first time. 😆 comes around like clockwork this time of year.

Went to Walmart this afternoon and grabbed a handful of disposable rain ponchos just in case. When we arrive this weekend, going to head over to Target to grab drinks and snacks for the room and will keep those bags to throw over my shoes if needed. Also, if it rains, going to have my family meet me when I get to CSR and have a new pair of socks waiting for me. Maybe even alternate shoes.

Sounds like you have a plan! I may need to follow something similar.

Luckily, I am not arriving to WDW until Wednesday, and we'll have a car if I need additional supplies.

With one week to go before the start of the races, I thought it’s a good time to dust off the annual reminder that the hay is in the barn. As always, thanks go to Charles for first writing this many years ago. :)

The Hay is in the Barn
I used to hear this weekly back in my high school days (and yes there were high schools back then). Coach would walk in Thursday after practice and tell us that the Hay was in the barn boys, enjoy the fruit of our labors. If you think about it, he was correct. We have all spent the training season growing, harvesting, baling and stacking our hay for future use. There is not much more that any of us can do from now through race day. Seriously, a marathon is not an event that you can cram for. I know there are a few who can simply head out and run one, but most of us need to spend the next couple weeks allowing the body to absorb the training from the last few months. Many do not understand that the work (running, lifting, etc) is not where strength and improvements come from; rather, its the recovery periods just after the work where they occur. Its happens as a result of the muscle repairs those tiny little micro tears that occur with all workouts.

Its taper time... Yes we do need to be out and running. Taper is seriously misunderstood by many runners. It is not a time of kicking back and not doing anything. Taper is a reduction of training volume. Volume = intensity x time. In many camps it is thought that intensity should remain high through taper. I am in that camp, at least for most runners. Distances, ie time, are reduced dramatically while the mid week intensities remain just as high as previous work.

The exception to the above... If you are injured or ill, I would just recover. Do not run or otherwise aggravate your injury. Give the joint time to heal up. If ill, its still ok to run, but keep it light. The general rule of thumb is that if your cold or illness is above the neck, head out for your run; if in the chest or below the neck stay in.

NERVOUS?
It is normal. Remember how nervous you were the first time you entered a race. These are the same nerves. If this is your first event, it is very normal to have a set of nerves during this period. Tapering tends to bring the nerves out as you are not working out near as long as you were just two weeks ago. Trust me, even the most seasoned runners have similar nerves. Maybe we just hide them better, or understand them better. But watch as you are in the corral on race morning. Folks are burning off nervous energy in various ways. Make a pledge to use your nerves to help get you to and through the race. Once the gun goes off and you just hit the point where you are sweating, your case of nerves will soon disappear.

So do we think today is the day Expo passes come out and we can start speculating on start groups t go with the weather conversations? I know the guide says "by January 2nd" but I wouldn't think they would want to wait until the day before the Expo in case there are issues (not that Disney IT ever has any of those). For those who did W&D, what was the timing there?

10:20 is my pace for easy runs. When I use 90/30 intervals my average run pace is around 9:25 and walk pace 14-15:00. I put the 60/30 pace into a run/walk calculator and got a run pace of 9:38. Try testing those out on a run for a few miles and see how you feel.

During the race itself, some of those miles will be faster or slower due to course congestion and the extra mileage from weaving around other runners, but the pacers will get you across the finish when they say they will. You can always start with a group and bail if you decide it’s not for you.

I’m 99% sure that I’m an email from rundisney (when they sent the waiver reminder maybe?) they said expo passes would be on the 30th. Who knows if that’s still true 😂

RACE - Goofy
NAME - Steve
DIS'er name - HockeySteve
Costume/Clothing - Likely just running clothes
Estimated Pace/Finish/POT from Registration - 89:XX 10 Miler
Club runDisney Platinum? - (Yes or No) No
Pre-Race Meet-up? - (Yes or No) Maybe! It's a solo trip for me, but I tend to be introverted and arrive late.
Front, Middle, or Back of starting group - Usually back
Early Bird or Late Arriver - Late. For Dopey last year, I didn't wake up til 3 AM each morning.
Expected Race Pace - No idea. Felt really good about running a 4:30 marathon a couple weeks back as redemption for bombing pretty badly at NYC, but caught a really bad cold and had to take about 2 weeks completely off. We'll see how I feel over the next week, but I can see my targeting a 5:00-5:15 with rides/pictures.

SAFD: I did Takumi Tei last year after Dopey, and while food and service were excellent, I would likely not do it again. Price was high for what you got and some other guests negatively affected the calm atmosphere (one party insisted on no raw fish which just made me chuckle, another party walked in with beers from world showcase and had their child loudly watching cars on an ipad through their meal - luckily I was mostly done at this point).

So I am looking for ideas on where to go after Goofy this year.

RACE - Dopey
NAME - Bree (or Brianna, but only my mom calls me that)
DIS'er name - Bree
Costume/Clothing - running clothes
Estimated Pace/Finish/POT from Registration - 4:23 marathon
Club runDisney Platinum? - (Yes or No) No
Pre-Race Meet-up? - (Yes or No) Maybe
Front, Middle, or Back of starting group - Middle
Early Bird or Late Arriver - Early
Expected Race Pace - Whatever feels good that day. I usually run with others.

Where do you try on your race shirts at the Expo to figure out if you want to exchange the size? Is it the bathroom, or is there a dedicated changing area, or are you just putting it on over your other clothes out on the Expo floor? Thanks!

Over your clothes on the Expo floor is what most people do. There’s restrooms on the opposite side of shirt pickup though.

Today would be nice (I'm curious!) but I think as someone states below that an email at some point from RunDisney noted by Dec. 30.
