Irma, Banked Points, Holding, Banked

Same question as before, but new twist. All but 18 of my 2016 UY points were banked into 2017 after having to cancel due to Hurricane Irma. When I called to cancel, I was told all 2017 points would go back to 2017 and remaining points would be banked into 2017.

I called this morning, and was told the 18 points were banked from 2015 and therefore would not be moved into 2017. The CM told me there was no way for the person cancelling my trip to know this when I was told all points would bank into 2017. Which is fine, I understand, eighteen points is not the end of the world.

I tried to get an aception and the answer was no. "Maybe you can find someone to give them to?"

Just curious, was or is anyone in the same boat and able to get their banked 2015 points into 2017?

I do not recall any reports of anyone ever getting that kind of exception (banking the same points more than once) for any reason. Sorry.

Thank you for your replies, and no need to be sorry. It just came as a bit of a surprise since I was initially told they would all bank to 2017.

In the end, the price of cancelling round trip air from Newark, rental car, and hotel was 18 points. In the overal scheme of things with the flooding in Florida and Texas, I don't have a right to be disappointed. Was just curious if anyone else received this type of exception.

We have a similar situation - we had banked points from last year to use last week and had to cancel due to the hurricane. We were also told that all points would be banked into next year when we called to cancel the trip and now they are telling us that 88 points can't be banked twice. There is no availability prior to the end of our use year (Dec use year). We are heartbroken and don't know what to do about it. Can't rent them out (no availability). Any advice about a good RCI exchange? Can we use them for a cruise? (Not my first choice but desperate times.....)

I went through the Irma reallocation of points. I had a reservation that I booked at the 11 month window booked with banked points. The dvc team did a great job of moving all my points and reallocating everything. Not sure how they reallocated everything, but when they were done my 135 holding points were moved and all my banked points were flipped somewhere else. My account is confusing because I have 3 homes and 7 contracts. Op I suggest you write to them and see if they can reallocate your points if possible. I have to admit, they did a fantastic job, I even got my dining plan refund back in two days. However the cruise line has been a pain. Almost 2 weeks this Tuesday and we just got most of our refund back yesterday, but still have money missing, along with many other cruisers.

You mention reallocation...did you have other trips planned during the UY of the banked points that were put back in your account due to the cancellation of the trip last week? Or, are you saying that the banked points from last weeks trip were either rebanked or put into a reservation in that is in a different UY?

I think that might make a difference. If someone had to cancel last week with banked points and they do not have another reservation already booked within the UY of the banked points, or can't book another trip due to lack of availability before UY ends, then I think they may have a difficult time.

My understanding was that banking points twice is not something that can be done. One of the drawbacks I think of traveling in the later part of a UY without the insurance, especially with banked points. Last year, when this happened to us, I didn't have banked points, but borrowed ones and they did return those to the original UY, but in that case, the points weren't getting extended, so could be why??

Maybe it would help to think of it this way. If DVC permitted people to re-bank points into 2 years later, that would mean that in 2018 four years of points could be used for reservations (re-banked, banked, current and borrowed points). If a large number of members were in the same situation then it probably would cause a room shortage because the resorts are set up to be fully booked. Banking and borrowing only works because someone borrows from next year so those members that bank points can find rooms to book the following year and vice versa.

I tried to sort it out, but couldn't figure it out. One reservation was an 11 month booked reservation with banked Bwv points and I had a 2 night (26 pts) in feb 2018 they did reallocated that one. All I know was I had 88 banked BLT points as part of the holding 135 and now I have no holding and no banked points. Plus my balance for 2018 went up....one day I'll try to figure it out.

From my experience there is always availability to find, especially over 2 1/2 months. It takes a little more work but can be done. Or offer the points to David's and let them try and match it up. They may take 88 points or else you can supplement with some current points to bring it up to their 100 pt minimum. That way they won't go to waste.

I've got 32 points banked from 2016 that were supposed to be used last week but Hurricane Irma interfered with that. Not sure if they will be carried forward into my 2018 use year or not.

I'm actually going to see if I can find a room for 2 nights in the next 2 months and use the points up before I call and ask member services about it. I know they are swamped at the moment.

Thanks - I'll try and rent them out with Davids. I looked at every week from now through the end of Nov and searching all room types and all resorts, only a day here and there was available but if someone wanted to add 1-2 days we might get lucky with renting. I have learned a VERY VALUABLE LESSON - buy trip insurance if you travel in the last 4 months of your use year. (This was the first trip EVER that I didn't buy trip insurance..... Murphy's darn law!)

Disney lumped me up in 2016 (hurricane Matthew). Charged me for nights we did not stay (in 2br @ BCV) then, when we told them we paid cash for a hotel in Disney Springs area, we could not get the Magic Express ride back to the airport.

We're in the same boat - Vero Beach and BCV. 35 points must be used by Feb.1st. No availability anywhere except Aulani and Vero Beach. We waitlisted to add on to a December trip, but chances of that becoming available are slim to none.

We had the same situation, where 17 of our points were banked from last year, so we would have lost them on November 30. Similar to your latest information, I was told there was no way for them to bank them the second year, which I think is due to legal reasons how the contracts are written up.

I kept stalking availability, and miraculously a three night stay at Kidani opened up, and I jumped on it. However, another thought if you can't find something at WDW, would you want to go to Vero Beach. I noted there was a lot more availability there. While I recognize it is not WDW, it might be worthwhile. Another possibility is if you have a friend who already is booked prior to the end of your the use year. You could give the friend your points so that they get used, then your friend can give you points from next year's allotment. At the end of the day, the friend is not negatively impacted since they have the exact same amount of points allocated to use years as before you did your trade. And maybe using similar logic, someone may be willing to rent your points (albeit at a reduced rate) who already has a trip planned who could use yours and save their own for later.

There were a couple threads about this leading up to landfall, including mine - we have a dec use year and 70 points from 2015. I don't remember anyone saying that they were able to get an exemption, unfortunately. We thought about just postponing to late Oct or Nov (we have a dec use year) but there wasn't anything available for more than one night. We decided to rearrange our vacation - push it off by just a few days. We lucked out because so many were canceling so we were able to find reservations but we still had to stay in 3 different villas.

We were told we could bank the points into RCI for another year but we have never used RCI and I wasn't sure if that would help us at all but if you are comfortable with it, it's an option.
