"It's Because This Wand CHOSE Me!" Sept 2017 TR *COMPLETE* 3/1 x2

We decided to head over to Haunted Mansion next, even though it wasn’t officially party time. DH really wanted to do it, and it was walk on right now but I figured the wait time would jump during the party hours.
Makes sense. Everybody wants to ride it on a party night.

We passed through the walkway from Liberty Square to Adventureland and found the enormous line for Moana.
Yeah... of course. Now they have Moana... :headache:

All the boxes and boxes of candy! We saw them continuously refilling the candy barrels as we went through the different stops.
They wouldn't even miss one of those boxes, would they? :rolleyes1

I was absolutely dreading the weather for this trip since we have never gone in September before, and I have to say, I was surprised over and over again the whole time we were there how comfortable it was! Also, as the night went on, it really felt like the most lightly attended party we have ever gone to. We typically go closer to Halloween though, so that’s not too much of a surprise.
That's great. I'm glad it turned out so well.

I tried to convince DS to do Big Thunder since he was planning to be so brave once we got to Universal and try some new things he was tall enough for like Mummy and Forbidden Journey, but he stoutly refused and I wasn’t in the mood for an argument, so we dropped it.
 He thinks he's going to be brave enough for the Mummy, but doesn't want to ride BTMRR?

I have to say, I was not a fan of the parade being so late this year, as it didn’t start until 9:15. It has gotten later and later the last two years, and I didn’t really like having to wander around for so long before the parade and then having to hurry over to find a spot for fireworks which were at 10:15. I liked having the parade earlier and some time in between to trick or treat or ride something.
That does sound really crammed together. I don't understand their logic on the timing of some of these things.

Pleasant surprise to hear that the weather wasn't too bad for you guys. I worried with it being September that it would still be ridiculously hot and humid.
I know you didn't like the late parade time, but for what it's worth, you accomplished a lot in that span of time between the start of the party and finding a spot to watch the parade! Sorry to hear DS wouldn't ride Big Thunder, though. That really would've been the perfect lead-in to the Universal rides!

Judging from your pics (which are awesome btw) it really doesn't look too busy at all. I've only been to Mickeys Halloween Party out here in DL and it's always sold out every single night and sooo crowded, I would love to go to an early MNSSHP one year but we always go in December. Great report, looking forward for more!

Thanks! I have my DH to thank for most of the pics in this TR.

I would love to see DL decorated for Halloween! Maybe one year. I'm sure the parties there are much more heavily attended than the ones in WDW.

We have done MNSSHP a few other times, and even on nights that weren't sold out, the crowds weren't as light as this party was. We have always gone in October though, this was our first time in September so that probably helped.

I'm in for the read

You have the cutest boy and looks like he was having a fun time

Welcome!!

Thank you so much. He absolutely loved this trip! It was the perfect time to take him.

Looks like a fun party! We liked the Tiki Room treat trail too...stopped to sit in the A/C for a bit (I'm guessing it was hotter at our party than yours). Fun "mine, mine, mine" costumes! And, wow, that CM must be exhausted by the end of his shift!

The Tiki Room trick or treat spot is a favorite of ours. So fun to walk through an attraction to get some candy!

We saw lots of cute costumes, but those seagulls were cracking me up!

I thought the same thing! He seemed to have endless energy!!

Makes sense. Everybody wants to ride it on a party night.

It's definitely a big draw for the party! They really spook it up in that area.

Yeah... of course. Now they have Moana... :headache:

I'm still scratching my head over this one. It makes zero sense with the popularity of Moana that they would only have her available on party nights and not have a permanent M&G for her.

They wouldn't even miss one of those boxes, would they? :rolleyes1

I wouldn't think so! Don't think DH wasn't tempted...

That's great. I'm glad it turned out so well.

It was a very pleasant surprise, that's for sure.

 He thinks he's going to be brave enough for the Mummy, but doesn't want to ride BTMRR?

My argument with him exactly!!

That does sound really crammed together. I don't understand their logic on the timing of some of these things.

Yeah, it doesn't make any sense to me. I think it was really nicely paced how they had it last year, even though the parade was a little bit later than it had been previous years. There was still some time between the first parade and the fireworks instead of having them back to back.

wow!

your pictures are so clear and just perfect.
kind of like what you see on postcards...

Thanks so much! All thanks to my DH. Any crappy iPhone quality photos are likely ones I took. :rotfl:

I was absolutely DREADING the weather! I came as prepared as I could since we had limited packing space with cooling towels. We never even used them! I'm glad I didn't have room to pack the misting fans because I was planning to bring them along too and it would have been a waste of suitcase space.

We really did! So I can't complain too much. But it was definitely ideal at parties past.

I thought so too, but he didn't agree. It would have been easy to get on too because the line was very short all night.

Once the parade was over, we crossed over to Adventureland and made our way to the hub to find a spot for the fireworks. We tried to go over to our favorite spot of hub grass in front of Casey’s, but they had it blocked off for a film crew. We thought maybe they were livestreaming the fireworks on Disney Parks Blog or something, but when we checked online they weren’t. However, just a week or so later they were “live” streaming the parade, but it made me wonder if maybe they don’t record those live broadcasts in advance instead.

We were able to snag a spot on the curb in front of the hub, and DS was really fading fast at this point. He had asked several times by now to go back to the hotel because he was tired. I had anticipated this might happen since we were doing the party on a travel day, and even though we hadn’t had to get up crazy early to get to the airport, he had still gotten up pretty early just because we were at my mom’s and he was excited to spend some time with them, plus their dogs get everyone up early whether they want to be up or not! So we compromised at that point because I absolutely wasn’t leaving without seeing the fireworks. We told him we could leave as soon as they were over and that he could lay down in my lap while we were waiting. He absolutely took me up on that offer.

DH had skipped bringing the tripod this time, so his fireworks pictures aren’t his usual quality, but he couldn’t help taking a few anyway.

And a video!

The fireworks are always amazing, and this night, they didn’t disappoint! I always find myself with a huge grin on my face as those final blasts are going off. DS agreed once they were over that he was glad we had stayed to watch. I asked him if he wanted to stay just for a few minutes more to see what the wait time was like for talking Mickey, but he was beyond done at that point, so we headed out of the park around 10:30. It was the earliest we have ever left a party! But we had gotten all of the trick or treat spots done, and gotten on a few rides, so all we really would have done for the rest of the party was meet Mickey and see the parade again from Main Street. So although we left early, we weren’t missing out on much.

We got the booster from the locker and started walking back to the Contemporary, and requested an Uber as we walked. It arrived just a couple of minutes later, and we made the drive back over to Royal Pacific. DS even nodded off in the car because he was so wiped out! Once back in the room, we took very quick showers and got to bed a little before midnight. Even with me blow drying my hair before I got in bed, DS was knocked out in the bed despite the noise. We were ready to get rested up for our first day in Universal!

Ha, your parade pics are so much better than ours! Loved re-living it!

Glad you got to stay for the fireworks and everyone enjoyed them. I cannot even imagine Izzy admitting she was tired in that circumstance - we stayed till the park closed. But you guys did great getting your must-do items done early and getting to sleep at a reasonable hour. :thumbsup2

Even if they aren't his usual quality it is still way better than anything I'd get.

Sounds like the right call. I'm glad you were at least able to get to the party and get a little bit of that Disney magic on a non-Disney trip. Well worth it even if you had to call it a night a little early. You'd hate to push it too far on the first night of your vacation.

DH was a little lost without his tripod, but he still manages to get some great shots!

I was hoping DS would be able to push through, but it was just tough with it being a travel day. He was just SO tired! But our only other choice for a party that week was Friday night, which was more expensive, so we decided to take our chances on travel day and go for the cheaper party. But having done the party a few times now, I think we accomplished everything we wanted to do, even if we did decide to leave early!

I always love seeing pictures of this parade. The lighting really just sets the mood!

It's such a fun parade! Definitely my favorite, and seeing it in Frontierland where it's a bit darker than Main Street definitely does set the spooky mood.

Poor guy!

I know, he was SO beat! It had been a long day.

Even if they aren't his usual quality it is still way better than anything I'd get.

Same for me!! lol

Yeah, we decided to take a chance on the cheaper party, and we still got so much done that it was still worth going, even if it was a shorter night than we had expected.

Day 2: Wednesday September 20th

After a late night at Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, we didn’t have any alarms set for the next morning and we ended up waking around 8:45. We took our time getting ready and had breakfast in the room. It was about 9:45 when we got down to the water taxi launch and after a nice boat ride over, we were arriving at City Walk around 10 am.

Our destination that first morning was Islands of Adventure! Universal Studios had 7 am early entry every morning that we were there, and Islands opened at 9 am. This was the only day of the trip that there was no Halloween Horror Nights at Studios, so that park was staying open until 7 pm instead of 5 pm like it does on party nights. We wanted to start out in Islands and end up in Studios so we could stay there a little later that evening.

Normally we would only attempt to do the Harry Potter attractions during early entry or right as the park opened. However, over the summer they had added Forbidden Journey and Escape From Gringotts to the list of attractions that take Express Pass! So once in the park, that’s where we were headed by way of Seuss Landing.

We made it to Hogsmeade!

DS was JUST at 48” with his shoes on as we left for this trip, so that opened up the potential to ride several attractions he had never been able to do before. One of those was Forbidden Journey, and it was the one DS was most excited to try so of course that was our first stop!

There was a proposal happening right outside as we walked up.

Here’s where I made a total rookie mistake. Express Pass was new here, and so was the fact that we had to use lockers since we weren’t child swapping. There was no designated entrance for Express outside, so I thought maybe they weren’t using it at that time. We put our bags in the locker, and THEN past that point is where there is a separate line for Express. But now my room key was in my bag inside of a locker because I didn’t have pockets and didn’t think I’d need it. Oh well, the wait was only 15 minutes or so, and since we weren’t sure where the Express Pass line went, I thought it was a good excuse to seen the regular queue at least once. Lesson learned!

DS was really excited, but I was a little nervous about how he would do with the seating, so I had prepped him a lot before riding. He’s never gone on anything with a shoulder restraint before and I didn’t know how he would be with sitting next to DH and I but not being able to see us or hold on to us. We were able to grab his hands though, and he was okay with that.

We came off of the ride, and he exclaimed, “That was AWESOME!!” I was so glad he loved it!

After that, we went on Flight of the Hippogriff, then caught the Hogwarts frog choir out performing on stage.

DS requested Hippogriff again so we did that one more time.

We were ready to move on after that, so we headed across the bridge towards Jurassic Park. But not without stopping for some photos of my little Hogwarts student in front of the castle!

UP NEXT: Welcome to Jurassic Park

I'm glad they did that. It isn't that much of a benefit when it isn't something you can use on some of the more popular attractions.

Soon after the Headless Horseman's ride, it was time for my favorite Disney parade, Boo to You!

This is such a great parade! We only just saw it for the first time on our last trip. Your pictures came out great! Too bad DS was so zonked by the end of the night, but I have a hard time making it to the end of a party on a good night, so that's totally understandable. Glad you got to see the fireworks though! They're amazing!

Yay! Citywalk is so pretty on a bright sunny morning!

Love this! As a HP fan, I'd be all over this!

Yay! Good for DS!! Good call prepping him about the seating on this ride. It is a bit different and could be scary. And he's right, it IS awesome! Great ride. :)

I want to say thank you so much for your report!!!

We had such a wonderful trip to Universal last thanksgiving and your report and pics took me right back. Our son loved it and so did we.

See your pictures brought happy tears to my eyes thinking about the memories

Great pics

Your son looks so happy !

Thanks!! He had the BEST time on this trip, and he was definitely one happy boy!

I'm glad they did that. It isn't that much of a benefit when it isn't something you can use on some of the more popular attractions.

It was really great that the benefit was added prior to our trip. It was nice to be able to ride any time of the day instead of just having to hit it during early entry or when the park opened, and then the lines being way too long for the rest of the day.

I'm glad he enjoyed it!!!

I was really worried about the seating configuration and the restraints on that one, so I was happy he enjoyed it so much!

There's just something about the wand and the robe... and a flat bill hat. :rotfl2:

Oh my gosh, don't I know it. He insists on keeping the bill flat like that, and it makes me crazy!!!

It's my favorite Disney parade by far! And I just love the music, it's so fun. It was tough trying to do the party on arrival night, so I was prepared that DS wouldn't be able to hang until midnight (I wasn't sure I would be able to either!!) but I was keeping my fingers crossed that the excitement and endless supply of candy would be enough to help him power through. But parade and fireworks were our top priorities, so at least being able to do those two things made the night totally worth it. The 10 lbs of candy we brought home with us was just a great bonus!!

Yay! Citywalk is so pretty on a bright sunny morning!

I love starting the day walking through City Walk! On a pretty day, it's a great transition to the park entrances.

Love this! As a HP fan, I'd be all over this!

I was always jealous of the people who have gotten engaged in front of Cinderella Castle, but after witnessing this, I think it would be my new dream engagement!!

Yay! Good for DS!! Good call prepping him about the seating on this ride. It is a bit different and could be scary. And he's right, it IS awesome! Great ride. :)

I was so worried that the seating would scare him, but I was really happily surprised it didn't! I was so happy he loved it!

I want to say thank you so much for your report!!!

Thanks for joining in!! Writing this has made me want to plan another trip back RIGHT NOW! We had such a great time, and I hope we are able to do something like this again...and soon!

Day 2 Continued: Wednesday September 20th

After a successful first trip on Forbidden Journey, DS was ready to head on to Jurassic Park!
As we were walking through, we saw the Raptor Encounter didn’t have a long wait at all, so we hopped in line. It was something new to all of us!

Universal 02-038 by disneymom1024, on Flickr
It was maybe 20 minutes, but once the raptor came out, it seemed like the wait flew by because it was so fun to watch everyone ahead of us go up. The TMs working there really set the mood because they would tell you to move slowly, don’t get too close to them too fast, and then when they had taken your picture and the raptor was about to “attack” they would hurry you out of the way. It was probably the most fun and exciting new thing we did the whole time we were there, and I will admit, I was a little nervous when it was our turn to go up!

Universal 02-032 by disneymom1024, on Flickr
The raptor we were meeting was named Zulu!
It was SO FUN!!! I have to admit though, I was a little scared, especially when I realized Zulu was right next to my face and she roared at me! We were all so happy to have stumbled upon it with a short wait, and happy we took the time to try it for the first time. It's something we definitely look forward to doing again on a future visit!

After that, DS wanted to do Pteranodon Flyers and he asked to do it with DH. I was a little bummed because I usually am not the one that gets to ride with him when we go with DD, but I let them go and found a spot in the shade to sit and wait for them.

After lunch upstairs, we made our way downstairs to let DS explore some of the exhibits.

He not only survived his first ride on Kong, he loved it!

Day 2 Continued: Wednesday September 20th

After that, we walked through Toon Lagoon on our way to Marvel Superhero Island.

Universal 02-061 by disneymom1024, on Flickr
DS was asking to ride The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, so we obliged.
This one is always a favorite, and we enjoyed it again this time. DS had been asking all day to get a lanyard so that he could carry his room key himself, so we headed up to the front of the park so that he could look at several different ones and decide what he wanted.

He hemmed and hawed over the different lanyard choices and was so close to getting a Gryffindor one, but ultimately ended up picking a Spider-Man one instead.

Happy with his new purchase!

Since we were right there, we stopped over at guest services to make an important upgrade.

Universal 02-069 by disneymom1024, on Flickr
We had bought our tickets through Undercover Tourist because they were offering a buy 2 days, get 2 days free ticket, and we went for the park to park option. In doing a little research, we found out we could actually upgrade to a seasonal AP for an even exchange as long as got full face value for the tickets even though we had bought them at a discount. People online were saying they had no problem doing this inside the parks, so perhaps it is like the old ticket bridging system at WDW where as long as they were used once, you were credited for gate price and not what you actually paid. So for a total of $10, we all three became seasonal AP holders! The $10 was only because DS had a kids ticket and there is no kids AP.

While there, we also asked about a birthday button for DS, which the TM was happy to get him. DH and I also got Happy Anniversary buttons since our 10 year wedding anniversary was the following week.

The TM also gave him a 1st Visit button because it had Spider-Man on it and she figured out quickly he was a Spider-Man fan from his hat, lanyard, and room key. Lol

With our new buttons and APs, we were ready to head out of Islands.

Yay for your DS! He's getting very brave!

He hemmed and hawed over the different lanyard choices and was so close to getting a Gryffindor one, but ultimately ended up picking a Spider-Man one instead.

Those are two pretty great options, so he couldn't go wrong. My husband has a HP one (Hufflepuff, I believe? That's his house,) and I have a couple of Seuss-themed ones.

He loves exploring in there. DH and I had never gone in there as adults before kids, so we skipped out on it the first couple of times we took DS. Once we went in there for the first time, it became a must-do! He absolutely loves all of the interactive elements in there.

Yay! We've never done this, and I always mean to check it out for fun. I think we might have to now!

It's so fun!! Definitely try to do it on your next trip. It was just as fun watching everyone else as it was doing it ourselves!

I've never noticed this before, but it's beautiful! Very cool.

I really noticed it for the first time on this trip. It looks so realistic!

Yay for your DS! He's getting very brave!

It was exciting as a mom watching him branch out so much from his normal comfort zone.

Those are two pretty great options, so he couldn't go wrong. My husband has a HP one (Hufflepuff, I believe? That's his house,) and I have a couple of Seuss-themed ones.

It was a tough choice because they are both things he loves so much! I was tempted to get a HP one myself, but I knew I really wouldn't love having it around my neck all of the time, so I decided against it.

That looks awesome! I have never done it myself. I've only been once, I think, since this opened and I just didn't think that it was worth waiting in such a long line for it.

It can definitely build a long line, which is why we have skipped it on previous trips too. We got to it at just the right time this trip, so hopefully we can plan around getting there when it opens for the day next time so that we can do it again!

That's great! I'm glad he's starting to see his bravery pay off.

It was fun to see him branch out of his comfort zone this trip!

Can't beat that deal. And now you have AP's burning a hole in your pocket... :scratchin

BELIEVE ME...I have been working hard hard hard to get another trip to happen before they expire!! We were literally seconds away from hitting "book" on a Mardi Gras trip since DS would be out of school when I remembered my parents would be out of town that week and unable to keep DD.
