All You Need is Love: an offsite, non-Disney PTR (counting down to May 2018)

Love the transformation of your home, along with your personal touches! I know you are enjoying it. We have been doing a little work on our home. Just small things like taking down wallpaper and repainting. We plan to get new counter tops and backsplash soon. We are doing all the work ourselves, so it is slow going.

Beautiful home! I wish I had the $$ to transform a few of my rooms, but my vacation budget keeps getting in the way!
Um yeah me too! DH just said the other day (when discussing June vacation plans)-guess we are waiting until next year to do floors (ongoing convo for 9 years now:rotfl2:)

Was it Basin where you bought the Bear Breath soap, or was that at Epcot only? Call me weird, but I'm intrigued by that :rotfl:

That was in EPCOT at one of the gift shops in Canada!!! Do they not sell that up there?? The actual soap was wrapped up fairly tight, so I wasn't actually able to smell it and no, it did not come home with us!!!

And even though I already told you on Facebook, I love, love, love your house!

I've told you this before, but I love your new house! I think it was a sign that the first place fell thru!

Looks like you have plenty of room for guests ;)

The people that flipped the house did a great job, though I have to say the way that house was done before totally made sense for the era you could tell it was from. I would almost think they had carpet in the kitchen to keep the floor warm but then there was hardwood in the dining room so that doesn't work. I only say this because, eww I know, but my grandma had wall to wall carpet in the bathroom in the winter and then just mat on the floor in the summer. She also always went barefoot in the summer or anytime she could. Yet the kitchen had linoleum like the bathroom so...

Ah, ok. I want to flip houses, if I lived a different life that is. Now I just want to be able to buy a house. Do not like renting but the challenges of international living do not make possible for us to buy at this time.

In the right part of the country, I think flipping houses would be an amazing career! If I ever move to Florida, I'd definitely consider it ::yes::. Hmmm, maybe I could have my own show? :scratchin Flip or Flop Orlando :earsgirl: :earsboy:

WOW! The transformation is incredible!
Enjoy your new home :-)

Thank you! :goodvibes I'm super glad the inside is finally almost complete!

Beautiful home! I wish I had the $$ to transform a few of my rooms, but my vacation budget keeps getting in the way!

Ugh, I hear ya!! :crazy2: Hence the reason that there will be no Disney day on this trip :sad1:. So many extra expenses to do the house up exactly as we wanted it. I'm glad to have my home coming together so nicely, but a little bummed that I couldn't finagle a day at MK or the Epcot Flower & Garden Festival into the budget.

Is it so wrong to want it all? :rotfl:

That’s an amazing price!

I’ve got a Car Rental situation going myself for February. We’re flying to Miami then driving to the keys. The car prices are insane! $100+ per day. When you find a lower rate, do you cancel and rebook? Any tips or suggestions?

I prefer Alamo thru Costco but right now my rate for an intermediate SUV is $500+ with them. I found a code with Budget for $250, but for four days I’d still prefer it less than that.

Yes, when I find a lower rate I rebook at the new rate and then cancel the original reservation (but before hitting that cancel button, triple check that you haven't made a mistaken anywhere in the new booking: the dates, times, locations are all correct). Check every single day, because rate drops don't always hang around .... you really do need to strike while the iron is hot.

Rates were steady for my dates right up until 2 weeks ago (so about a month out from our arrival). Other times, the big drop was months beforehand. There seems to be no rhyme or reason. $100 a day is crazy high  .... surely it will decline at least somewhat before you travel!

What an awesome transformation! It looks like it is out of a magazine. However... that man cave is missing something..... MINIONS perhaps? tee he he he. Love love the cat pillows. So fun but still classy with the decor.

Personally, I love the pink bathroom but I am a retro person. I would have just toned it down some with paint and accessories. While I liked the blue metal cabinets (and am happy to hear they went to a good home). The carpet, blech and the booth did not work at all. The newer design is so much better. The flippers did do a great job of choosing nice fixtures/finishes. It looks like a new build. You have lived there 2 months and 1 year less then I have been in my home and I have nothing that looks as put together, except maybe DDs room because we had to buy her new furniture.

Your bushes may be okay to plant this weekend, but I might hold off on the hosta. They are hardy but this weather has been so horrible. We put some apple trees in two weeks ago and the wind sunday-monday here has one tilted to a 45 degree angle. It will have to be redug this weekend.

With the way spring is going, it may still be snowing when you leave. We had snow in NEPA again this morning. View attachment 317707

Ha ha, I'm not sure Steve would agree about the minions :rotfl2:. While we donated a large amount of them to our local toy drive two Christmases ago (I like to think they brought some very deserving kids some big smiles on Christmas morning) I did still keep a few of them. They're in a bag in our storage room. I wonder what the cats would think of them if I did put them out :scratchin

I certainly hope that the snow is pretty much over.....heaven knows we've had our share this winter (and then some). If we get any more of the white stuff between now and when we leave in 2 weeks, I'm claiming refugee status and not coming back :rotfl:. Someone just send me my babies on the next plane to Orlando!

Just small things like taking down wallpaper and repainting. We plan to get new counter tops and backsplash soon. We are doing all the work ourselves, so it is slow going.

But think of all the money you're saving! $$$ :thumbsup2

We are going back and forth on whether to do the major work in the back yard ourselves, or whether we should hire it done. The cost savings is huge, but I'm impatient and just want a pretty backyard (and our time to work in the yard is limited, especially when Steve works such long days). Depending on what the quotes come in at, I may have to be content with slow progress, too.

I bet your kitchen will look fabulous once its done! New countertops and backsplash will give it an entirely new look!

Um yeah me too! DH just said the other day (when discussing June vacation plans)-guess we are waiting until next year to do floors (ongoing convo for 9 years now:rotfl2:)

Meh, new floors are highly overrated ;). Dole Whips, on the other hand........:teeth:.

YOU DIDN'T BUY THE SOAP?!?!?!?

:sad::sad::sad::sad::sad::sad:

Now I'll never know what Bear Breath smells like :guilty:.

If they sell it in Canada, I've never seen it. Perhaps Bear Breath just never caught on as a scent :confused3.

Next time, girl, you need to take one for the team and buy the soap!

AND BUY THE SOAP! :rotfl:

I've told you this before, but I love your new house! I think it was a sign that the first place fell thru!

Looks like you have plenty of room for guests ;)

We think so too, Callie ::yes::. Things always tend to work out for the best, don't they?

We do have plenty of room for guests :thumbsup2. Should we expect a visitor or two from Indiana this summer? ;) I have two kitties who would love to meet you!

I'm sure the original decor was all the rage in the late 60's/early 70's ::yes::. And the owners must have taken good care of the home, too, to not have to update it in more than half a century. The gold curtains on the family room windows made me think of bell bottom pants and disco music :lmao:.

I'm sure that crazy kitchen carpet made sense at the time (and you're likely right on the money with it being a cold feet solution!) but I'm eternally grateful its gone :o. I'll gladly wear slippers if my tootsies get chilly :p.

Two weeks from right now, assuming no unforeseen delays or issues, I should be relaxing in the Fountains hot tub, with a drink from the Tiki Bar in my hand :beach:.

This afternoon, I emailed the pre-arrival coordinator at the Vistana to link our two reservations (the complimentary night and our regular 7-night ownership stay) and to put in our requests for room location (top floor, close to the Fountains pool). I haven't heard back from her yet, but that's nothing unusual. I am sure she will reach out to me next week to confirm.

I also met with our new Pet Nanny, Morgan, this afternoon....and she's fabulous! The cats loved her and so did I! I feel much better now knowing that they will be in experienced, loving hands (she has 5 of her own cats at home!) and am happy to have that reassurance. She promised me a text and photos every day while we're away, and I have no doubt that she'll deliver.

All that's left, aside from packing, on my pre-departure to-do list is to order our parking pass for SeaWorld and Aquatica.

They also sell the soaps in the gift shop in Frontierland in MK.

I bought my son a bar of Sasquatch Sweat. I bought it as a joke but it turned out to be really nice. I don’t remember the scent but I remember surprisingly liking it.

Look under “products” then “auth. Wilderness” you will find all the funny ones.

Well I somehow missed all the fun. The house looks soooooo good. I've never heard of flipping a house, I take it it's when you get the builders/ interior designers in to make all the changes, is this right ?

So glad you finished everything and have a little time to think of your trip.

House flipping is buying a house that needs work at an awesome price, it really became more mainstream and hit HGTV during the recession because of all the foreclosures. Then they redo anything that needs to be done interior and exterior and then sell it for a profit. Sometimes not much or they lose money or sometimes a huge profit.

Okay, I promise that next year when we go back I will buy the soap. However, since I'm fairly confident that someone else will be at WDW before I will, I put out this challenge . . . someone else can buy the soap first!!!!!

Thanks for that link :thumbsup2. I will be bookmarking that for the Christmas season.....those soaps would make some super fun stocking stuffers. Especially for my American friends and coworkers here in Michigan :).

Thank you :goodvibes. I am so glad it all came together well. It's definitely a relief to have all the boxes unpacked and everyone (including the cats) so well settled.

@afan gave you a great explanation of flipping ::yes::. Basically its buying houses in good neighborhoods that have fallen into disrepair (due to age, neglect or abuse) and giving them a full renovation and update. Then, the house is re-sold for a much higher price.....the sellers (the "flippers") pocket the profit, and the buyers benefit by having a fully renovated and modern home. Our house was built in 1957, and was lived in the entire time by the same family. The husband passed away many years ago, and then the wife died early last year. The home was largely untouched from its original condition, and the couple's son wasn't interested in keeping it. So, it sold in September to an investment company that flips houses as their sole business. They gutted the house right down to the studs, and re-did everything from drywall to cabinets to tile and light fixtures. They put a new roof on it, new siding, replaced the furnace, put in all new appliances, and basically only left the original hardwood floors (and those were all refinished). When it was listed for sale post-renovations in January 2018, the new list price was $120,000 more than what they paid for the home 4 months prior. So, they get to keep the difference after materials, labor and closing costs are deducted from the final sale price.

I think it has to be a super fun career. Can you imagine getting to pick out cabinets, tile and flooring for a living? So fun!

I'm surprised the TV shows that are so popular here that feature flipping (Fixer Upper, Flip or Flop, Home Town, and a multitude of others) haven't caught on in the UK. They are HUGE in North America.

I must admit, I suffer from a bit of an HGTV addiction. Aside from the morning news, I rarely watch any other channel :o. I don't watch very much TV, to be honest.....but when I do, give me some Chip & Joanna Gaines and a healthy dose of shiplap! :teeth:

If I happen to stumble upon some in Disney Springs this trip, I'm buying you a bar of Bear's Breath. We can negotiate whether or not I mail it to you (boring) or if we meet in the middle for dinner so I can give it to you in person. Maybe Dayton, OH? :scratchin

only-12-more-days-to-go.png

It was a beautiful spring weekend here in SE Michigan. Considering last Friday, Saturday and Sunday we were hit with monsoon rains and a nasty ice storm, this weekend's sunshine and temperatures in the high 50's felt like we'd been catapulted straight into paradise. It also meant we were able to get some much-needed yard work on done to the grounds of our home. We had three yards of topsoil delivered on Friday morning, so the priority over the last two days was to remove all the lava rock from the front gardens, regrade all around the house, and put down mulch in preparation for planting. I can honestly say every muscle in my body hurts tonight :faint: (I carried and spread 26 bags of mulch just this morning alone) but we got a TON accomplished. Not only did the grading and gardens get finished, but we also were able to install the new door bells (for some odd reason, the house didn't have one  and looks like it never did :confused3), get the flag pole up, hang the barn star, and do some pruning. While we have a TON to do yet in the front and back yards, it's starting to look much better on the exterior.

A sample pic of the refreshed gardens.....I can't wait to get my boxwoods and hostas planted over the next few weeks! :flower1:

Cross your fingers that next weekend is equally as pleasant as this one so we can squeeze one more weekend of productivity in before lazing around in Orlando for 8 days. I'll relax WAY more if we've made significant progress outside before our departure.

I did hear back from the pre-arrival co-ordinator at the Vistana, and she is going to do her best to fulfill our villa assignment requests :thumbsup2. She did assure me that she would link our two reservations and keep us in the same villa for all 8 nights, and that really was our only concern. I'm sure whatever villa we are placed in will be awesome :goodvibes.
I'm officially down to 6 more work shifts before vacation :cool1: ... Monday/Tuesday/Thursday both this week and next. They should all be nice, busy days (which tend to pass marvelously quickly) as I work ahead to get things done in an effort to minimize how much my coworkers have to pick up my slack in my absence. I have to make a hair appointment for that final week before we travel so my "unicorn dust" isn't visible (no greys allowed on vacation, its a rule :teacher:), and I have to contact SeaWorld to arrange for a parking pass for the week, but otherwise, there's not much more preparation that I need to worry about. I am thinking of ordering a waterproof pouch for my cell phone for our waterpark day(s)....something like this....

s-l300.jpg

....so I'll have to get cracking on that by Tuesday at the latest, to give enough time for shipping and transit.

That said, I'm too pooped to party tonight (seems to be going around......this is the rest of my household this evening ):

.....so the to-do list will have to wait until tomorrow.

Hope you all had a great weekend, wherever you are located :goodvibes.

House looks great! We haven't done any outside yard work yet. We did get our tent up and tested yesterday. Had to make sure we knew how to set it up before our one night camping adventure at Fort Wilderness. ;)

Ahh look at the babies! You have lap cats, I have lap chickens.
We haven't had a weekend to get to my gardens and I am starting to panic a bit. Although we are predicted to have a cooler than average May/June/July so hopefully the late planting season will be ok! Hoping next weekend we can finally get to my garden.

The refreshed beds look very nice!

Great countdown when there is only 6 more work days....

I'm surprised the TV shows that are so popular here that feature flipping (Fixer Upper, Flip or Flop, Home Town, and a multitude of others) haven't caught on in the UK. They are HUGE in North America.

I was flipping through the guide yesterday and saw a new show on HGTV that I'm not sure how the name got past everyone and ok'd to air - Flipping Virgins. I get what they mean by it but I'm not sure that was the most appropriate name for a renovation show. I go through phases where I watch the station more often or rarely at all. There's not many shows on currently that I care for other than house hunters and the buyers get on my nerves sometimes. I do think it would be fun to flip houses, if only I had the money. The house behind ours had it done and I don't think they made anything but they also did an awful job. The house wasn't that great to begin with, small bedrooms, tiny closets, weird sunken family room. I never understood how they raised all their kids in the house and they were the ones that build it. The house across from it the owner had been using it as a rental after having redone some of it. It looks great but also didn't make the best decision. Huge room over the garage begging to be a master but split it into two rooms. So now it's a 5 bedroom house with one full bath and a 1/4 bath with just the toilet and sink. Made no sense but the finishes were great, but the left the livingroom sunken which I wouldn't have done.

we also were able to install the new door bells (for some odd reason, the house didn't have one  and looks like it never did :confused3),

I would say it seems odd that they never added one but my house in NC has never had one, but it was built before indoor plumbing so... It's also under 700 sq ft so I didn't see the reason but for a house your size it makes sense to have one. I'd like to upgrade the one here at mom's house, we replaced the old one but it doesn't always ring.

Another busy weekend! Thanks for the explanation, I have seen similar TV shows, just never heard the expression. I've seen the Canadian brothers Jonathan and Drew as they recently did a run of their shows on our TV.

I don't know why I keep missing updates! I am watching the thread and get nada. GRR! Anywho, your trip is fast approaching and you guys deserve it after this long house process! I love the pictures, it's so crazy to think of how it looked before because it looks amazing now. I have to say my favorite touches are the cat pillows in Steve's man cave! They are adorable! How is Jake doing these days?
