I love credit cards so much!

I'd like to thank you all for the excellent catch up reading...I got home from my (awesome) Dis trip at 1 am with a head cold....what a way to keep myself entertained, trying to catch up here!:rotfl2: I'm still in the dark with all the new updates from the past week...and now a Hawaii thread over there? so much to read! 40 pages left!!!

Do you have a Freedom card? Or do you have an extra CFU, CSP or CSR that you could PC to one? That 5% quarterly bonus on groceries is nice.

We don't have it. I forgot that we had discussed that one, too. I don't think we'll have time to get the card and max it this quarter (wonky travel schedules for personal and work = less groceries), but some of the other quarterly categories are ones we'd make use of. Maybe I (ahem... I mean he...) will do that and then deal with getting our old Chase Amazon PC'd to the new Chase Amazon Prime so that we can get the grocery cash back and dump it in to a travel savings account (we shop at Whole Foods) once the CF grocery bonus is over.

You are in an AWESOME position!! You are at what we'd call 3/24 (meaning you have gotten 3 cards in the past 24 months). With a wife who is interested you are in 2 player mode which means you can each apply for cards and earn even MORE points! The best starting place for you is to focus on Chase Ultimate Rewards (URs). This is a super versatile point that can be cashed out at 1 cent per point OR redeemed for travel at 1.25 cents or 1.5 cents per point. This includes booking On-Site stays at Disney and can also include tickets and dining plan if interested.

There are 6 cards that earn URs: Chase Ink Preferred (CIP)*; Chase Ink Cash* (CIC); Chase Sapphire Reserve (CSR); Chase Sapphire Preferred (CSP); Chase Freedom (CF); Chase Freedom Unlimited (CFU). *=Business Cards

Since you are a sole proprietor of a business I would recommend you start by looking into the CIP card. Here's a quick rundown of how that signup works:

Chase Ink Preferred (CIP)
  • Best Online Offer = 80,000 Ultimate Rewards (URs) for $5k spend in 90 days (there is an in branch offer for 100k - it requires some additional work to apply in branch to with a BRM).
  • Annual fee = $95 (not waived)
  • Points are worth = 1.25 cents each through the travel portal OR transfer 1:1 to numerous partners
  • Assuming you'd use the 1.25 travel option here's what you get:
  • 80,000 bonus URs + 5,000 base URs (from min spend) = 85,000 URs worth $1,062.50 LESS $95 annual fee = $967.50
  • Also of note - you could hold these points, get a CSR after and then you can redeem these points at 1.50 via the CSR making it worth $1,180
After that we probably would recommend you look at Chase Sapphire Reserve and/or Chase Sapphire Preferred. An important note is you can only apply for one of these cards every 24 months BUT there is a loophole that if you apply for both at the same time you can earn the bonus on both. CSR is a great card to have because it makes ALL your URs worth more.

Chase Sapphire Reserve (CSR)
  • Best Offer = 50,000 Ultimate Rewards (URs) for $4k spend in 90 days
  • Annual fee = $450 (not waived)
  • Add'l perk = $300 travel credit that you can get 2 times in the first year
  • Points are worth = 1.50 cents each through the travel portal OR transfer 1:1 to numerous partners
  • Assuming you'd use the 1.50 travel option here's what you get:
  • 50,000 bonus URs + 4,000 base URs (from min spend) = 54,000 URs worth $810.00 PLUS $600 in travel credits LESS $450 annual fee = $960.00
  • (I'm NOT including the benefit of free TSA Precheck or Global Entry but you could attribute another $100 in value to that).
Chase Sapphire Preferred (CSP)
  • Best Offer = 50,000 Ultimate Rewards (URs) for $4k spend in 90 days
  • Annual fee = $95 (waived year 1)
  • Add'l bonus = add an authorized user (AU) and get 5,000 more URs (don't just add your spouse, let's talk about this one before you do it).
  • Points are worth = 1.25 cents each through the travel portal OR transfer 1:1 to numerous partners
  • Assuming you'd use the 1.25 travel option here's what you get:
  • 50,000 bonus URs + 5,000 AU URs + 4,000 base URs (from min spend) = 59,000 URs worth $737.50 less NO annual fee = $737.50
  • Also of note - If you apply for a CSR AND CSP at the SAME TIME you can earn both bonuses and then redeem these CSP points at 1.50 via the CSR making it worth $885
After these 2 or 3 cards then we can start to help you with a long-term strategy. It is possible to completely offset a $4,000+ Disney vacation with the right strategy :D

I know I've thrown a TON out there now...So the last thing I'll say is once you have one (or multiple) of these cards you can then refer your spouse and earn the signup bonus with them AND earn referral points on top of it. I'll stop now and let you ask some questions (if you have any) before I go too far down the rabbit hole, LOL! :)

Thanks for all of this info. I will definitely look into the CIP for my wife right now as I believe she is only 2/5 and just got the SWA CP for 2018-2019. I wanted to do the Plus and Business SWA cards for myself towards the end of this year so I could get a CP for 2019-2020. That would put me at 5/5 until November I believe and then I could do the CIP for myself. Does this make sense or would I get more value out of doing the non SWA cards you mentioned above?

I referred DH to spg biz on 4/16 and got 7500 points on 4/19. A nice disboarder used my referral on 4/17 but those points haven't posted yet. Think that one didn't work? Looks like my other referral back in March posted on the 3rd business day too. Don't mean to sound greedy, just about to use these points. :groom:

OK, so I am trying to read through the Hawaii thread on dischurners. I really want to pull this off for DH sometime between June and Early January. Options are basically summer, thanksgiving, or Christmas break.
How do we decided what airline? We originate in Nashville, but we have a toddler traveling. :crazy2: I think it would be ideal to go to the west coast or near there one evening. Then the next day (evening maybe, so she can sleep on the flight) to the next leg to Maui or HNL. (I'd like to do Aulani for several nights and Maui for 5+. Maybe a 5/5 split.) I get so overwhelmed when I look at the flights. We need them for 6 people. I have spg points, URs, hilton, hertz, and SW (not a ton) points. I am thinking either Westin in Maui, or grand Wailea. We need 2 rooms.
How do I start figuring this out? I'd love to fly Hawaiian airlines but that isn't imperative. Their middle section looks nice though...not first class but bigger seats and not many in that cabin so quieter.

So for example, this came up and is the 2 day travel that I am going for...but what is the best way to do it on points? I checked the UR portal and this flight doesn't come up on there....maybe because it is 2 days?

ETA: If booked through Alaska air it is 30k points each way. Not sure how to use my current stash on Alaska, so will google that. I found diff dates in July that total 47,500 on Alaska air's website.

Do you see a 7500 points bump when you log into your Amex account? There should be a Starpoints Earned YTD count and a bonus would be reflected there.

I've been meaning to post some ideas. I'll try to reply later today!

One room has a bath tub/toilet/vanity and the other has a shower/vanity.
Ah, okay, that's what I thought. I think the only DVC resorts with two bathrooms in studios/1 bedrooms are: BLT, Kidani and VGC. It would have been awesome if they'd put that second toilet in for the Poly studios.

I was underwhelmed by Aulani, but that is probably because I have older kids and it was a madhouse when I was there with my DD18. I haven't stayed at the Westin Maui in years because I vastly prefer Wailea (better weather). I'm biased toward the Grand Wailea as my mom has a house there (one of the townhomes). It's a great resort. Like the Aulani the pools can be crazy (and chairs hard to find), but it's more of a luxury hotel than Aulani. You will have the same luxury prices for food and other amenities, too, aka very overpriced!

I'm not sure what airlines are convenient from Nashville, and how you are planning to pay (miles or cash)? I love Hawaiian and Alaska, but I don't think they have any late night flights going west. Award flights are very difficult around holidays, so if you are going that route, maybe summer? (But FYI it can be very hot). Southwest would probably work for you guys when they do announce. That's expected some time later this year with flights starting next year.

Quick note - you'll want to express that "2/5" and "5/5" as 2/24 and 5/24. the 2 = # of cards and the 24 shows that you're talking about the last 24 months.

So yes - you are at 3/24. Here's an interesting wrinkle to throw at you...Chase Business Cards are subject to the 5/24 rule BUT they don't add to your 5/24 count. What that means is you have to be under 5/24 to apply for the CIP or SW Biz BUT getting the card won't increase your "3".

  • If you got the CIP for your wife, you could take advantage of that offer and the $5k spend probably keeps you busy for awhile. Then she'd still only be 2/24.
  • You could potentially consider having her get a CSR (or doing the CSR/CSP double dip we talk about) to get even more UR points. If you hit all 3 of those offers you end up with at least $3,000 towards Disney!
  • Also down the line then she could refer you to the CIP which is a GREAT deal since you can easily combine UR points and then redeem them together toward travel.
  • I think getting 2 SW cards (a biz and personal) at the end of the year is a great idea for you. You're at 3/24 and as you said, you have one "falling off" in November. So if you get a SW Biz you're still 3/24, then get a SW Personal now 4/24 but then that card falls off in Nov and you're still 3/24 heading into 2019.
  • You may not be aware yet but there are rumors that Chase will come out with a new Premium SW personal card this summer that may have an even larger sign up bonus. Stay posted for that! (rumored details are here: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/rumor-chase-will-launch-premium-southwest-card/)
I'd say you have the framework of a great strategy. With 4-5 cards this year you could cover a huge part of your upcoming trips. Obviously you understand and enjoy the benefits of the SW CP so keeping that on the list makes sense :) I'd consider focusing on URs too since those can be used to pay for your Disney trip (especially if you like to stay onsite).

Anybody here following the Free Dining thread? I'm not even doing a Disney trip that time of year (We are doing Sea World in the fall) but I just enjoy reading through it especially when it launches and everybody is so excited. It's crazy how they keep adding to the restrictions on that promo though!

It also is slightly sad to see all the people who are really desperate to get a discount to make their budget work for their trip. I'd love to just bring them all over here and tell them to earn some UR points to pay for part of their trip (or all of it). Alas, I think many of them would just think we are CRAZY haha.

I wish I could "like" this multiple times. I never think of things like this. Smarty!! :-)
I'm curious about this...... is it a good deal? I see SPG is 35% off right now (if I can even do more, I already added 30k this year,is it waived?) I love the idea if it's wise to use UR this way -so If I was allowed to add more (?) this year it would be 682.50 for 30k spg=90k Marriott- use credits to pay for points = 68,250 UR? (and I could use the FU to purchase at 1.5x points?)

It was a good deal in that very specific situation. They were short Marriott points and looking to book a nights and flights package and therefore considering a transfer of URs to Marriott. And even then...it potentially would still make sense to just buy the SPG points and NOT cash out the URs and save them for the future. It really NEVER makes sense math-wise to cash out URs at $0.01 each. However in rare circumstances where you really want the cash, I can see somebody doing it.

A little OT but thought someone here might know... Has anyone done the Daily Getaways deal for Alamo? It is $25 for a $50 off base rental. It goes on sale today (nothing like waiting till last minute!). I'm wondering if this can be used for rental booked through Costco travel for Alamo? Is it basically like a giftcard or is it a discount code? Not sure it would help if it's a discount code since I think Costco is already considered to be a discount. Thanks!!!

Did free dining come out? I looked at Disney's website this morning since I'm keeping an eye out for fall room discounts but didn't see it. I'm hoping I can get a bounceback offer for free dining when I stay this November, but I know that's a BIG if. I will be happy with a decent room discount to combine with my URs!

Word on the Free Dining Thread is some time tomorrow morning.

Kind of random. Plastiq picked my preschool payment for review after I put it on a new card (DW’s SPG Biz) this weekend. Added DW’s card to my Plastiq account to take advantage of some FFDs. Been making the same payment on Visas and Amexes for months. Nothing to hide, and education is an allowed category for Amex so I sent in an invoice.
