I didn't feel like reading through the legaleze that came with my email from Flickr.

Anyone here have the quick and dirty?

Are all of my existing links going to be broken?

What's SmugMug like to use? I've loved using Flickr and am so sad that big change is coming.

All good questions. I've tried to read the stuff they sent out but haven't been able to figure out the answers myself.

I'm also concerned about links breaking as I use my Flickr account to host pictures that I link to here on the DIS and other places.

I went in the other direction. I deleted my Flickr account. Sure enough, all DIS links broke ;-) Too many computer accounts ... time to reduce.

I have no idea on the legalities of everything and the small print yet, but to answer your question on what smugmug is like to use: (I use it as a place to share family pictures and as a location for galleries for my clients) It's easy to use and a great way of managing photographs in an online space but for the time I've used it it's been less about interacting with an online community than flickr and much more about having an online space for your photographs. So flickr always felt like a kind of social media to me whereas smugmug is more of a website for your photographs. I suppose it's very possible that will change though as they try to implement some of flickr's old features and functionality to keep those users.

I have been using my Flickr Pro account as backup storage. I have almost 35K photos there (many are private and just there as backup storage for me). I'm really not very happy about this. And of course I'm annoyed that I just paid my year's premium for that account about a month ago.

I'd venture to say that if the links are broken (I can't see how they won't be) then a large portion of the photos on the DIS are going to go away.

Doe SmugMug give you access to the Exif data on photos posted there? That's my favorite feature of Flickr. I would miss that greatly.

The online community part of it has me very concerned. I would miss that as well. I guess I don't have a feel for the size of Flickr vs. SmugMug to know whether this change is big enough for them to want to adapt for the new Flickr members.

I currently have my photos organized nicely and also worry about how it they would eventually migrate to SmugMug. If they just dump into one spot, it's all worthless to me.

I believe you're able to choose to show the EXIF data on your photographs to others (although this isn't something I've experimented with, so as it stands you have to choose to show this - I can't recall if Flickr is the same for this). You can enable it on some/all galleries if you like.

With regards to the online community aspect, at the moment with the way I use smugmug it's literally it's own little island of a website, so I don't get visitors to my pictures unless I send people there. I've never used it differently so don't know if it's possible that it can be used in a similar way to Flickr in that you can search out different photographs and comment, or favourite pictures, that kind of thing. My guess would be that they'll do everything they can to maintain the online community that Flickr currently has, but I guess we'll see. Up to this point I've seen them as two different experiences; I go to Flickr to share photographs with absolutely anyone, see what other people are producing, that sort of thing. I go to smugmug to upload family photographs into a specific gallery and client photographs into different password protected galleries. Maybe Smugmug has always had similar functionality to Flickr but if they have it's not something I've used at all.

I've been having trouble with Flickr every since Yahoo took them over, and I never used the social part, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

That's sort of how I have seen Flickr vs. Smugmug even with my limited exposure to Smugmug. So I'm definitely disappointed in this change.

Flickr defaults to showing Exif data. So if Smugmug requires opting in for that to happen, I bet most won't have it. What a big disappointment that will be (to me at least). I have learned a lot by studying that information from some of my favorite photographers. I know there are programs that can read it, but honestly, if it's not easy, I likely won't do it.

I believe they are saying there will be no foreseeable changes -- Flickr will continue in its current format.
I'm sure there will be some level of integration, especially for pros. But I suspect that the "Free" version will stay pretty close to what it already is.

Some encouragement! Thanks. I hope people will post back here when it's more definite.

Yes, Smugmug gives you EXIF data. The thing I like about SmugMug is it's run by people really into photography. Here's a good perspective...

Yes, you can choose to have others see EXIF data for your SmugMug galleries. It's an option in the Settings for each individual gallery or all galleries as a whole.

And if I remember correctly there are independent apps that do the same for any picture downloaded from the net.

I thought SmugMug had a ‘no cost’ type of subscription option? I just looked at SmugMug and have a 30 day trial. Flickr worked for me. Are they totally changing Flickr or just incorporating the 2? I don’t know anything about SmugMug.

I think the days of "free" internet are coming to an end. In fact nothing is really free. If your not giving them money then you (your personal info) are the product.
Note though that (generally speaking) giving them money does not mean you won't still be the product.

Absolutely. Important to check their privacy policy. But again, if it's "free" assume you are selling yourself.
