What adult purchase really shocked you once you saw the price tag?

The first regular bill that shocked me was water/sewer. It’s high in my locality and billed quarterly.

I’m accustomed to that now but the ones that get me now are tires and dental care. And disparities in health insurance premiums. I switched jobs and will have more money because the insurance is so much better. Don’t even want to talk about the COBRA bill I got!
 
Sewer. I never had to pay for sewer until I bought my house in 2009. I was surprised at how much it was and it has consistently gone up over the past 11 years. It was always included in rent or we were on septic.

I forgot about cobra, I quit in 1998 to do ebay full time...holy cow...I guess i had it easy in my government job, but no regrets, ebay had dwindled at my retirement age if I had stayed on, and in 1998 ebay made making that cobra payment easy.
 


We haven't had to buy a washer and dryer in years. Now we do, and I want a simple top loader. No front loader, nothing fancy. The total for the two is twice as much as I was expecting 😳

Funny. My daughter and I just had a conversation very similar to this. How everyone says "drink tap water it's free." Well NO it really isn't. That "free" water actually isn't free.
 
The price of meat. I could do without it but family members love it and I'm shocked now every time I shop.

Before it was insurance. That was so easy to deal with when part of a plan.
 
Home maintenance. Things like updating the septic system or replacing the roof. You can't really get enjoyment out of them, they're just necessary. Now remembering back to my parents being upset about us climbing on the roof or disposing of certain hygiene products in the toilet. I get it!
