What adult purchase really shocked you once you saw the price tag?

Ambulance bill. I was in my early 20s, so just out of school. We went skiing, I got injured and they took me to the hospital in an ambulance. I had no idea I was going to get a bill for that in the first place. I had thought it was similar to the fire dept who doesn’t bill you after they save your house. Then there was the hospital bill on top of that. It sucked.

Home maintenance. Things like updating the septic system or replacing the roof. You can't really get enjoyment out of them, they're just necessary. Now remembering back to my parents being upset about us climbing on the roof or disposing of certain hygiene products in the toilet. I get it!

This. Just had to replace both our heater and AC 😳

I only rode one once as a patient, and I was not too sick to make sure they had my insurance info. They tried to tell me it wasn’t necessary. I insisted they write in down on the paperwork. Never saw the bill.

College tuition :scared1:
 It is gobsmacking to hear what some DIS’ers and their kids are paying to get a basic undergrad degree. My DS’s tuition for a BA at a well-respected university is about $8,000/year for tuition, fees and books with no requirement to live on campus.
That's another thing - It was a shock to me when I worked in the US and discovered you get seriously nickel and dimed on everything medical.
Private medical insurance in general - just wow. I can’t imagine what a difference it would have made to our lifestyle over the years if we had needed to budget $1,000’ish per month for it. :scratchin Even supplemental coverage at a few hundred a month for a family is out of reach for many if they have to acquire it OOP. I don’t know too many people who buy it if they don’t receive it through their work benefits.

I went to buy those dryer things with the scents. Unstoppables or something and I was shocked by how much they cost.

Cardiac care procedures and overnight stay. The care was top notch and the result was life saving but the amount paid to the hospital and doctors was shocking. Thank goodness for good health insurance through Medicare and supplemental insurance.

The cost of a new furnace a couple years ago was a huge shock. As was the front door we just put in. I also remember being indignant when I first learned I had to pay a water bill AND a sewer bill.

DS21 is in his own apartment for the first time and was lamenting about the cost of food last weekend. He said, ‘No more A1 for me. Big Y brand is good enough.’

Oh yes.....we had to replace our whole system last year.......2 AC units (big ones) and the heater went with it since they are all connected. It was a near fainting moment.

We need a new double oven combo and it is $$$. But I am down to only one working correctly.

We have a leak in ours with the refrigerant. Don’t know how big yet. His friend almost topped it off last week. Ran out of refrigerant before it could finish. We’ll have to check again to see how much it lost. Hoping it’s a tiny leak. Unit is 16 yo.

Good tires and decent quality deck furniture.

For the latter - it's literally in the elements all day - why. why are you making me spend so much $$ on this.

Also good paint.

Water bill. The the amount, just having to pay for water. My parents lived in areas without water districts so we had our own well. Never had a water bill, no matter how much we used. Used electricity to pump it out of the ground but that cost was buried in the electric bill.
