2 week Japan Trip Report and Vlog! (Tokyo/Disney/Osaka/Kyoto)

Yes! Fruit was super expensive. I still bought some at convenient stores, and I bought salads at Tokyu Food Show because I just really love fresh produce and it wasn't always available at places we ate. It wasn't too hard to find when eating street food, but I wouldn't say it was common, either. A cluster of grapes was like $30 and I just couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger even though I really wanted to try some.

Also yes omg the skinny bars! Later in the trip you'll hear a lot about Yuki (an izakaya owner that we befriended in Osaka) and his bar sat maybe 7 people. Piss Alley was small like that, as were most alley style bars. I really enjoyed them because the focus is on talking with the owners and other patrons, but I can easily see how it would be impossible to enjoy that environment with a group of 6 people. It was just my husband and I, so we found ourselves enjoying small bars.

I was SO SO SO excited to be heading to Disney. My husband and I are big park nerds - my husband even more than me, and we never thought we'd get to see DisneySea or Tokyo Disneyland. We FB lived our walk to the train station right through Love Hotel Hill and our friends at home got a kick out of it.

The park opened at 8, so our goal was to be at DisneySea by 7 as we had heard about the crazy crowds. We were at Shibuya Station by 6:00 and had to make a transfer at Tokyo Station but arrived at DisneySea by 7:00 as planned. We ended up buying two day monorail passes, but then I realized you could use Suica too. It still might be cheaper to use the monorail passes because there's a huge discount on the second day, and it wasn't complicated to get the monorail passes - but I never read anywhere that you could also just use your Suica card if that's easier for some people or they're only going for one day.

Even the monorail was decked out for the holidays:

When we arrived at the park entrance, we were a little confused about where to go. There were a bunch of lines that looked like they were for the ticket booths and a long line past them. We had already purchased our tickets at the Disney Store, so we got in the other long line. Oops, that line was for the Happy 15 (the extra 15 minutes the hotel guests get in the parks) so after standing in that line for 30 mins, we had to go back to the other lines.

We KIND OF had a game plan, but we didn't download the Japanese Disney app, so we had to decide whether we were going to make the early dash for Soarin FP or not. I really love Soarin, but the ride is almost identical to theUS rides (with a vastly different queue, pre-show, and you ned flying over Tokyo, of course). It was for sure pandemonium when the gates finally opened, but we decided we should get the Soarin FP so we didn't have to wait in line for 3 hours later in the day. We went straight to Soarin and our FP was for about 4:30 in the evening. Yowza.

When you get FP, the machines spit out a reminder slip that tells you the time of your FP and the time you can get your next FP, but you use your actual tickets as the FP when you get in the FP queue.

Everything you read or see says "The crowds at Tokyo are insane." and if you're like me you think "I've been to WDW at busy times, and we're going to Tokyo at a slower time, so we're good." YOU ARE NOT GOOD. I REPEAT: YOU ARE NOT GOOD. Kidding, sort of. Everything will be fine, but I have never seen crowds like I saw at DisneySea. That being said, it seemed like the ride lines weren't horrible if you had a plan and utilized FP as much as possible. I would guess that there were a lot of people there to shop for holiday merch (which had just released about 5 days earlier), and see Disney characters? I still can't quite figure out how it was that crowded and the lines were pretty reasonable.

We grabbed some Chinese Spice popcorn and headed to Tower of Terror. It was our longest wait of the day at about 60 minutes.

What a cool queue. In fact, all of DisneySea is just so cool. There is not an INCH of that park that isn't themed in some way, it's an interesting reminder of what can happen when executives don't keep cutting back on the plans for a world to save money at the expense of theming. I'm looking at you, Bob Chapak.

Anyway, Chris and I love the lore behind the Society of Explorers and Adventurers and it was so cool to see it integrated in so many different places inDisneySea. I'm a big fan of the ToT, and I like Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout even more, but I think the DisneySea ToT is my favorite of all now.

We were pretty close to the location for the show lottery, so Chris waited in line for that while I ran off and purchased myself some Dumbo ears, a Tokyo Disneyland beanie, and the Mickey Hamburger pass holder.

I will admit here and probably nowhere else that I agonized over which passholder to get as though it was the most important decision of my life. Roger Rabbit? Cool! Oswald? LOVE IT. Randal, Sully, Mr. Potato Head, Dale, etc etc etc.. LOVE LOVE LOVE! I ultimately decided on the Mickey Hamburger because it's SUCH a Tokyo Disney thing. Why are they all so cute thought?

After ToT, we headed toward Aquatopia and Finding Nemo. We could get a new FP by now, so I grabbed Finding Nemo since the return time was only 45 minutes later. We did standby for Aquatopia (about 15 mins) and rode on the right side. Then we snagged some lunch at the restaurant right there:

Oh hi, you wanted a glass of wine? How about a half bottle? Don't mind if I do! I thought the food was pretty darn good! I mean, it's not like eating in a little restaurant in Tokyo but as far as quick service theme park food goes? Top notch.

We jumped into the FP line for Finding Nemo and it was super cute! I don't need to ride it again, but I'm really glad we did it the once because it was adorable.

We headed off toward Indiana Jones, grabbed FP, then had ourselves a cocktail. How great is the theming here? C-3PO? I DIE.

Chris also realized he didn't bring any sunglasses on our trip and it was SO BRIGHT at DisneySea, so I bought him these and they make me laugh. They're flight goggles for Soarin and they have a strap that goes around the back:

We were going to ride Raging Spirits, but the wait was pretty long, so we decided to try when we came back for Indiana Jones:

79408683_10157987271979853_1792222503238631424_n.jpg

We kept following the path toward Mediterranean Harbor and had ourselves a quick ride on Sinbad's Storybook Voyage. SO CUTE! I cannot get over Chandu. I almost bought a Chandu passholder, but I wasn't even sure that one pass holder was useful so I definitely didn't need two. I kind of wish I had purchased a Chandu pin for my lanyard, though. It was basically a walk-on and I would have ridden it again if I didn't have to go on a 5 hour mission to find a bathroom. Kidding. Sort of. I did eventually find a bathroom.

I wanted to play some of the carnival games, but there was such a long line for them that we just moved right along.

Then I had my very favorite snack in all of Disney. EVERY DISNEY COMBINED. I want one right now.

79751395_10157987271994853_5106325895690321920_n.jpg

Even Chris liked the curry bun, and he doesn't like curry. WHY IS BREAD IN ALL FORMS SO DELICIOUS IN JAPAN? WHAT IS THIS SORCERY?

We popped into Mermaid Lagoon and it is so cool inside there! It's mostly little kid rides, but we did take a ride on their teacups(I forget what they're called) because Teacups were closed at TDL while we were there.

79663157_10157987316819853_6312252399150956544_n.jpg

After that, we went into the middle of Mount Prometheus. Journey to the Center of the Earth was under refurbishment while we were there, which was a total bummer. We grabbed FP for 20K leagues under the sea, and then had ourselves a beer in this cave-like quick service:

78644758_10157987272079853_7260624939529535488_n.jpg

We tried to get into Magellan's lounge for a drink but the wait was so long and they didn't even really have a line, so we skipped it. I had intended to pop in earlier in the day to try to get dinner reservations, but forgot and I'm not sure how we would have fit a TS meal into our day anyhow. Instead, we poked around Fortress Explorations. We even watched their mid-afternoon show from up there.

We did some more shopping, and my husband threw his beloved Nintendo controller hat away, replacing it with Donald Duck. He is so ding-dang particular about his hats and the NES hat lived a good life but was showing some signs of wear. Farewell, NES hat:

78870376_10157987273649853_7930583809857159168_n.jpg

It was dusk by then, and we stopped in for a glass of wine and a churro, then did 20K leagues under the sea (I thought it was so fun!) and finally Soarin:

If I understand correctly, you miss some pretty cool queue if you do FP. but I didn't want to wait in line for hours. That being said, the pre-show was THE BEST PRE-SHOW I'VE EVER SEEN. I loved every bit of it. I also liked that the actual ride vehicle looks like a DaVinci flying machine instead of the generic vehicle in the US Parks.

We still had some time before Indiana Jones, so we went to the Teddy Roosevelt lounge for a drink and snack. Chris had been DYING to go inside the Columbia. We had to wait about 20 mins but it wasn't too bad:

I had the seasonal cocktail which I BELIEVE was chestnut and rose?

The park was looking gorgeous at night:

Indiana Jones was awesome. I just loved some of the surprises that differ from DL. I ALMOST LOST MY PARK TICKET HERE! Because you use your actual ticket as the FP, I had removed it from the pass holder and then I DROPPED IT. Luckily I only got about 10 steps away before I realized and went back to find it.

We popped next door to Raging Spirits as well, and waited about 40 mins. It's quick, but it's a good little coaster!

On our way back to the front of the park we took another ride on the left side of Aquatopia since it was a walk-on.

The park was still open for another 45 mins or so, but we were pretty much toast, so we grabbed some Strawberry popcorn and we also had another couple of drinks somewhere in the day, and did some shopping on our way out of the park so we could get a decent night's sleep before Tokyo Disneyland the next day.

Overall thoughts:

* DisneySea is the most gorgeous theme park I've ever been to.

* SnoSnos kind of creep me out. LOOK AT THEIR EYES.

* We had these popcorn varieties at DisneySea and I will rank them as such:

3. Honey
2. Strawberry
1. Chinese Chili

I really wanted to try shrimp and garlic, but the line was stupid long.

* Duffy kind of grew on me, I've never been a fan, but you can't not kind of like him after spending a day at DisneySea

In order to accomplish all of that drinking and riding, this is what we skipped:

* We only watched the one show from Fortress Explorations. We didn't win anything in the show lottery and we kind of wanted to see Big Band Beat, but it just never really fit into our day.

* We skipped TSMM - I LOVE Midway Mania, but it's not any different than at home, and we wanted to make sure we prioritized what was unique. I did walk into the area of the ride because I wanted to see the theming and I thought it was really well done!

And, if you want to see what we drank, we invented a new game: Drinking Across the 7 Seas. I clearly had ramen on the mind because I keep calling Ichiban beer Ichiran. Oops. :

OP and others who have experience. What's the best option for Mario Karting in Tokyo? Looks like I will also need to somehow get an international driving license? Is that right?

We used StreetKart Shibuya, but they have offices all over Tokyo. We had a great experience with them and they have several different lengths of tour as well as starting points so you can really choose what part of Tokyo you want to go through.

You do have to get an International Driver's License before you go to Japan. It wasn't a huge issue at all, and you can get one at the AAA nearest you. We paid about $25 a person because we aren't AAA members (I think there's a membership discount), and they took pictures, looked at our Oregon Driver's Licenses and then about 15 minutes later they handed us International Driver's Permits. The IDP is good for a year, so we set it up to start when our trip started even though we purchased them a few months ahead on the chance we get to Europe next fall and they'd be handy there as well!

First let me just say, how absolutely cute the 2 of you are... I love the dumbo headband...

Great report... lots of really great pictures...

Our friends that just where there... sort had the same experience... lots and lots of guest, but the ride lines where not that long in wait times.... They did 4 day park tickets... Here's how they divided up their time, they spent first day at Disney Seas, and the 2nd Day at Disneyland, on day 3 they were allowed to hop... so they spent the morning at Disneyland... then went over to Disney Seas for the evening, and just end up just checking everything out, taking a ton of pictures, shopping and having some drinks and snacks for the rest of the evening... Day 4 they spent totally at Disneyland ...even though they could have hopped back over to Disney Seas... Overall they felt, that the Disneyland is a 2+ full day park, while Disney Seas is just 1 full day... Your thoughts?....

She did say that they did not arrive super early at the parks except the first morning, and it was nut's after that they waited until after rope drop, that getting in was really easy... Her youngest DD has some anxiety, so they just waited so that her day would not start out on a bad note...
Her thoughts were that the parks where not as crowded in the evenings, as here at WDW.
What are your thoughts on evening crowd's?...

As far as FP's she said that they did get plenty, and that they did see and ride what they really wanted... as far at the show lottery they did not win any tickets, except for her daughter and future son-in-law they did win...

She said that they noticed what she thought might be them setting up for the fast pass system like here at WDW...? using magicbands? she said that she did ask a CM... and they said it was for Olympic's... next year, and that's all that they could really understand? Did you notice anything like this?

Yeah, I don't think I would have needed a second day at DisneySea. I suppose if Journey was open, or we could get tickets to BBB, but one day was fine. I really did love it, and I'd back - I actually kind of feel the same way about TDL. We are HUGE park fans, but Japan may have been a once in a lifetime trip and there was too much we were missing already outside of Disney that I don't think I could have justified a third day in the parks. We really did pretty much everything in 2 days and even left the parks early both days.

So, the only reason to start early is because FP for the E-ticket rides go FAST. I mean Soarin was gone within an hour and Pooh's Hunny Hunt was gone within two hours and then the lines for the biggest rides get LONG. I don't think we would have gone on Soarin without the early morning FP. I never saw the line under 2 hours and it was at 3 hours most of the day. That being said, evening crowds were way better at both parks. I think there are a lot of locals that head home a little early to work the next morning or they take their kids home. One interesting thing was that there were 2-3x more kids at TDL than at DS - so while evening crowds are lower in both parks, it's much more noticeable in TDL than at DS.

I didn't notice them working on a MagicBand set up, but I also wasn't really paying attention. I'd imagine they'd have to resolve their international ticket purchase issue before they could rollout something like that unless they start issuing magic bands at The Disney Store- but even then a lot of people purchase at conbinis via a machine - you could end up with a huge line at the ticket booth to convert all of those to Magic Band. They still have plenty of time to do that, but I didn't notice anything. I can only imagine what the crowds will be like during the Olympics. Yikes. I actually wonder that about all of Japan. Even during a slower tourist season there were some things that were just WALL TO WALL people and Chris and I would sometimes wonder how Tokyo and Kyoto will even be able to absorb those additional crowds next year.

Love the report! We are probably taking our kids (will then be 11 & 13) to Japan for a week in early November 2020 - celebrate our 15th anniversary & my 50th. We already decided that we'll only do ONE day at Disney (as much as it kills us), and will do DisneySea, given we are Disneyland regulars. Sounds like it is such unique theming that that's the one to do. I've just started researching Tokyo/Osaka/other spots to visit, we'll only have probably 8 full days. So much to see & do in Japan! My 13-year old is DYING to stop in South Korea first, but not sure we can make that happy (she's a HUGE BTS fan!).

Yes! If you can only do one, I think you really have to do DisneySea. It's unlike any of the US parks - and while I LOVED TDL, it is similar to DL and MK.

100% agreed. DS all the way. It's a beautiful tremendous unique original park.

Sarahboo & MML7 - thanks for confirming, it sounds like DisneySea is really the one to see. We won't be doing more than one day, sadly skipping Disneyland, but there's so much to see in Japan for the little time we have that we need to allocate appropriately!

Hello again, everyone! We took our kids to Mexico for their Christmas present and then we got the flu immediately upon our return, but I'm feeling human again, so here is a little something to tide you over:

Our video about MariCar:

I've got some work to do today, but if I get it done early I'll do my TDL report. I've got to finish this trip report before I forget everything!

But! While I'm working on that, Chris also edited our drunken review of Robot Restaurant - where I blow Chris's mind.

Thanks for posting this... we have been on and off about the Robot bar.... Now that we can see really what is going on... and now for sure I know its just not our thing, DH was like what in the world... he said this is something that we can skip for sure... I will say it looks like everyone was having fun for sure...
that's the great thing with this... you can decide ahead of time what works and what doesn't... and keep you from spending money and time somewhere you really aren't or are into...

We got a kick out of it, but it's definitely not everyone's bag! I'm glad we were able to save you some time and money!

Sarahboo, I think we lost the 7 Seas drinking challenge. We did 1-2 Seas. Over and over and over. Esp. the little place with whiskey and hot cocoa...then after Christmas was done, it changed to bourbon and cocoa... LOL We tried, but we also found after we started drinking, we didn't walk around so much. :teacher:

Gah, I have been SO BUSY. Work is usually slow this time of year (I own a real estate brokerage), but I've been slammed. I'm not going to complain, but it's seriously hurting my trip report time. :)

Ok, the next morning we got up and got to Disney a smidge earlier than the day before. Pro Tip: Check park opening times. TDL opened a whole hour later than TDS so we had a lot of time to sit. I could have used the extra hour of sleep, and I KNOW better than to assume the parks open at the same time, so I'm not sure why we didn't check, but oh well. Even though we arrived TWO HOURS before the park opened, there were at least 100 people already there queued up. It's the one time I wish I actually had one of the ground mats everyone carries. I didn't understand why everyone had them at first, but you learn pretty quickly that everyone is polite and orderly and because no one is taking cuts or pushing in front of you, everyone can sit for parades and shows so the ground mats are super handy.

Because we were SO early, we took turns holding place in line while the other one checked out the Disneyland Hotel. HOLY MACKERAL THAT HOTEL IS GORGEOUS. I was on the hunt for coffee, but they didn't really have a coffee stand or anything. They do have a little convenience store inside the hotel so I bought some iced coffee drinks and a snack/breakfast. There is a convenience store at the train station that I would have stopped at instead (more food options) but we didn't realize how early we were and our original plan was to buy breakfast at the bakery inside Disneyland.

Unlike our experience at Disneysea, they let us in the park before it opened. We weren't really paying attention to the time, so when we got to the FP station for Monster's Inc we were all confused that it was closed and were scrambling to figure out a new gameplay. We started to head to Pooh's Hunny Hunt when I realized that NONE of the FP stations were open because the park wasn't technically open yet. I ran back to get in line for a Monster's Inc FP and Chris got in line for PHH. The MI FP station was so cute. Every time it issued a FP it giggled and they had a bunch of different laughs.

After I acquired FP for MI, I caught up with Chris at the perfect time, right while he was in queue next to the walkway so I didn't have to try to squeeze past people in line which is always awkward for me.

Pooh's Hunny Hunt is one of the coolest ride's I've ever been on. I heard a lot of hype about it and I try to not buy into hype, but it was so awesome - it totally exceeded my expectations.

Next we planned to stop at HM, but it was down so we went on Splash Mountain. I think we waited about 30 mins and it was the longest ride wait of the day.

I'm pretty sure I took this picture from near Splash Mountain:

On our way out we noticed some people sweeping and handling garbage and THEN MUSIC STARTED AND THEY BROKE OUT INTO A BREAKDANCE ROUTINE. It was awesome.

By then it was time to get our next FP, so I waited in line for corn potage popcorn (my favorite popcorn of the trip) while Chris grabbed BTMR FP. Our goal was to head to MI but the parade started coming through so we had to race the parade to the HUB and cross back over to Tomorrowland. I accidentally crossed at the wrong spot, right as the parade was coming but managed to get back across in time and barely beat the parade to the HUB. It was kind of disorienting because it's ALMOST like MK or DL but not quite. I kept getting disoriented because I felt like I should know where things were but nothing was quite where I thought it was going to be.

Monster's Inc. was adorable, I still liked PHH more, but I REALLY enjoyed MI.

We popped over to Plasma Ray's for an early lunch. I thought there was actually a Plasma Ray like Cosmic Ray but there wasn't. We still wanted to go there anyway because in the Today (which is the pamphlet only in Japanese that shows you what seasonal or event food and merch is available) noted there was a lunch bag that looked like the Mickey chicken sandwich and I HAD TO HAVE IT.

Related: We both really loved this sandwich. It came with fries and a drink for about 1200 yen, and I think I paid about 2100 yen to also get the lunch bag - BUT ISN'T IT ADORABLE? I'm scared to use it because I don't want it to get dirty, but it's so stinking cute.

This is where things start to get fuzzy. I know we tried the show lottery and lost again, then I think we went on Star Tours. We were going to do Buzz Lightyear too but the line was super long and it's not different than the Buzzes at home, so we skipped it. Space Mountain was under refurb, so we had to skip that too.

We jammed over to FantasyLand and knocked out Small World, got FP for HM, and headed on our way to BTMR. After that I totally lose track of what we did and when we did it, but I know we also did all of these things:

Country Bear Jamboree Christmas
Haunted Mansion - Nightmare Before Christmas

Note about TDL and HM specifically - these parks are SO CLEAN. I always thought the Disney Parks in the USA were clean but they are NOTHING like the Disney Parks. Haunted Mansion is so clean that you can't even SEE the scrim in the ballroom scene.

Jungle Cruise (hands down the best JC I've ever been on even though I couldn't understand any of the skipper jokes)
Roger Rabbit (the hole works here, what a cool effect!)
Pirates (they still auction off the red head here)
Watched a Day Parade
Watched the Main Street Electrical Parade
Ate at Queen of Hearts Banquet Hall
Shopped a ton
Snacks at Sweetheart Bakery
Had another snack (pic below)
Watched the projection show in World Bazaar

I feel like we did a lot more than that, but it really is a full day. I didn't take as many pictures this day, but here are some more:

This picture cracks me up because my husband's mouth was so dry that when he went to open his mouth his lips got stuck to his teeth and when I looked at the picture I was like *** happened with your MOUTH? Then I couldn't stop laughing long enough to take another picture:

This is not ice cream, it's beef with gravy topped with mashed potatoes. I love Japan.

I LOVED TDL. I even bought my beloved Steamboat Mickey popcorn bucket that I wasn't able to find until almost the very end of the day. I had given up on it. I think PHH was my favorite ride in all of Tokyo Disney Resort, but I still think that if someone can only go to one of the parks, they should go to DisneySea because it's so special and unique.

We did some shopping around 5:00pm before the Main Street Electrical Parade, and here's my pro-tip: I kept putting my shopping off because I didn't want to carry stuff all day. We knew it would be chaos near park close, so we thought 5:00 was early enough. IT WAS NOT. The stores were COMPLETE PANDEMONIUM. It's funny because it was the only time I felt like there was absolute chaos in Japan. Everyone is so polite and orderly, but there were no holds barred at 5:00pm in the stores. I wanted a few more things, but I just couldn't even function in the stores anymore and I ended up hitting my head SUPER HARD on the corner of a wood display - so I just checked out and we went to the bakery to try some treats. If I could do it again, I would have purchased things as I saw them during the day, saving it all for the evening was a huge mistake.

The tip about the shopping is one that everyone has been telling us... get what you want when you first see it, or else you probably won't see it again, or worse be pushing around in a store where sheer chaos is breaking out...

Another thing our friends told us that merch. is so much different between Disneyland and Disney Seas... so get what your going to get before leaving the parks... Did you find that to be true?

How did you like the Queen of Heart... ? our friends that went 6 adults, they were pretty divided on it... the one thing that they could agree on was one of the few spots with a decent salad... ?

Thanks for the update... I am jotting down all kinds of good tips...

There is definitely park specific merchandise. I wouldn't assume that if you see something you'll se it again later, for sure. There are also a lot of more generic items you can find in both parks. For example, I really wanted the soap dispenser that dispenses in the shape of Mickey's head but we could only find the holiday one at DisneySea, so I held out in hopes I'd find the regular one at Disneyland. i didn't, but I knew I'd still be able to buy the holiday one at Disneyland if I didn't grab it at DisneySea. In general - yes, buy stuff when you see it. I was better about that at DisneySea than Disneyland because I saved so much of the more generic stuff to buy at Disneyland in case I saw something I liked better and I got in my head that I didn't want to carry stuff around all day because I was buying more stuff, but now I wish I had done it differently.

I thought Queen of Heart was okay. I liked my salad, Chris liked the corn chowder and it was all fine - it wasn't bad. I did think the decor was really cool. Our plan was to eat at Hungry Bear because I love Japanese curry - but we just weren't near it when we got hungry. We never ate at a table service restaurant while in Disney - and I thought the food was decent for QS. I found it generally to be better than the QS food in the US - but not as good as the food in the rest of Japan.

First of all, thank you so much for sharing your story. This is the best trip report, bar none, on any forum, that I've ever read! You guys look like such genuinely nice people, and I really love your attitudes and your travel style. We also like wine, whiskey, and I guess... drinking in general! I'm a DJ, so like you guys I know how well music can connect people. And we definitely know what it's like to make plans, have them work perfectly, and other times not work so well but just roll with the punches and have wonderful experiences anyway.

I came here because I'm taking my family to Japan this summer (just before the Olympics), and the last time my wife and I were in Japan was in 2001 (before we had kids--it was the grand opening of TDS). Back then our travel style was much like yours in this trip report--this time will be different, with a 16 year-old and 7 year-old girl with us! Like you, we're doing a combination of Tokyo Disney with "the rest of Japan" stuff. Our plan has us spending three nights in Tokyo, three nights in Fukuoka (where my wife's college exchange roommate lives), four nights in Osaka, and wrapping up with four nights at Tokyo Disney itself.

Please keep the great reports coming--I'm loving them, and definitely getting some ideas for our trip!
