A "Whew" and a "Wow" - Touchdown in the land of magic

Hello all my Dis'friends and welcome to the Live, as it happens, sometimes raw (not really), sometimes funny (you know, in that "oops, I just tooted a lil' bit" way) Disney World trippie!!

We departed our humble eyetie of Lebanon, PA around 4pm. I remember VIVIDLY my ex-wife asking the kids thoughtfully, "Has EVERYONE used the bathroom?" ... "YES!!" was the resounding cry. (anybody wanna guess where this is going?)

We drove ALLLLLL the way to the other end of Lebanon (ummm 10 minutes :confused3) before I found myself pulling into Sheetz mini-mart so that ... not 1 ... not even 2 ... nope, ALL THREE of them could go to the potty :rolleyes1

OK ... so after the relief was discovered, we were back on the road and headed out of Leb-town.

Daddy had done that "daddy thing" and gotten fun snacks for the road ... the favorite by a unanimous decision were the "sweet n' salty caramel Bugles" ... I'm not a fan of the regular ones but friends, lemme tell you ... that is some MIGHTY fine snackin'!:thumbsup2

About 15 minutes outside of town (on the turnpike) I plugged in a surprise. I had somehow, up til' now, kept my kiddos from seeing, "The Princess and the Frog:eek: and so ... I sneakily (is that a word?) stuck in the new DVD and squeals of delight ensued (the kids thought it was cool too :lmao:)

I have to admit it was an awesome drive, listening to the great music from the movie ... feeling "Disney" course through my blood stream ... and hearing one of my favorite snacks spoken over and over and over again ... Beignet ... Beignet ... Beignet!!

OK - a little aside here ... as I listened to the music and the overall tone of the movie I got to thinkin (yes, this can be a VERYYY dangerous endeavor) ... with the POFQ due for rehab at the end of this year ... I BET that they have plans in place to enhance the theming using this great new Disney movie as the backdrop?? I'm just sayin' ;)

Coming out of Harrisburg I caught a glimpse of some WEIRD funnely clouds spidering out of the sky ... and sure enough, the radio was busy issuing warning-after-warning of the presence of potential tornadoes ... see, here's how "off" the sky looked (though it's cool in it's own powerful way too):

We stopped en route around Thurmont, MD to grab a bite to eat at a fun Burger King themed like a 50's Malt Shop ... it was typical burgerdom with the food ... but the atmosphere was a nice touch for our trip.

Continuing onward ... we found ourselves pulling in to the Hyatt Place at Dulles Airport around 7:45pm. All in all - not counting our stops - about 2 1/2 hours of drive time. We all enjoyed it!

This hotel (where I'm typing this from now) is absolutely beautiful!! The room (I'll try to upload a pic tomorrow) has a dividing screen about halfway in with a big corner sectional couch (pull-out queen) as soon as you walk in the door ... two queen beds beyond the screen ... a 42 inch LCD at the mid-point facing the beds/couch with the ability to swivel so someone on the "living room" side can watch it more exclusively. The side of the tv stand (which is a great multi-boxed shelf set-up) has a console for plug-n-play of any device you can imagine .... truly, this hotel "gets it".

Even MORE impressive was the greeting we got when we walked in the door ... it was as though we were family coming back home. My kids ended up with apples and juice in hand (complimentary) and we were assured the shuttle would be ready at 5am AND (get this), since the breakfast only starts service at 6:30 the front desk asked what we like and assured us "goodie bags" would be awaiting us at breakfast to take along on the shuttle.

I made my way back down to the front desk area (which is very "smartly" arranged with a wrap-around feature so it seconds as a bakery counter and bar) where I was able to grab a glass of their house Cabernet.

As I finish my last sip of this first day (and of the soft wine), I'm thankful for the laughter that has already ensued ... thankful to get words that my parents have arrived safely (they drove and ended up getting to WDW a day earlier than expected ... so they're checked in for tonight at POR ... yeah, I'm jealous) ... and thankful to hear the rhythmic breathing of my children as they sleep with all the anticipation of what this next week will bring!!

I have a 6:55am flight to catch ... good night friends!!

This is one trip report I don't wanna miss!

Have fun at this magical place .......... and update often! ;) :thumbsup2

Did you ever set out with grandiose imaginings of what something would be like ... only to see it take a nosedive and crash and burn directly in front of you?

Yeah, that's what happened with my whole "this is live" trip report. Oh, that's not to say fun wasn't had (just wait, the report is still forthcoming) ... and that's not to say my intentions weren't pure (it simply seems that time by the pool, time in the parks, time eating, oh yea and that weird thing called SLEEP took over).

So this is the "re-start" of my trip report. I hope you'll join in ... I'll likely change the name to something more quippy ... I'll begin to splice in some pics ... I'll add a few dining reviews here and there ... and I'll laugh till coffee comes out of my nose (hopefully - you will too - laugh that is, the coffee "thing" is my deal).

Its good to be back my friends ... apologies for the passing of time since my trip but I experienced what can only be described as "Dis'pression". :confused3

Mmmmmmwah!!

Looky, LOOKY who's back!!!! Rob, I can't wait to hear ALL about it.

don't worry about the nosedive/ crash and burn thing, time by the pool is WAY more important than keeping us happy and doped up. ;)

BRING. IT. ON!!! :woohoo:

How in the crapdoodles did I miss that live update???!!!! I LOVE your writing, and am stoked you had such a great first travel day!!! AWESOME!!!! Yeah, no fair mom and dad made it first..... Ah well, you got house cabernet and the kids got some Princess action already! NICE!

FUN was absolutely had ... and the updates begin. Yet my apologies that the updates are all happening "post-trip". Thanks for joining in.

I like the way your doing your trip report so i'm subbing.

I hope you'll still like the way I do it :confused3

Thanks for extending the understanding Liesa ... I'm about to dive into the continuation of our awesome trip.

Question for any and all ... should I move this over to the "trip report" forum and, if so, is there an "easy" or a "right" way to do that?

0400 and the alarm goes off followed by the trustee wake-up call!

The "Hyatt Place" proved a comfortable sleep and all the amenities were excellent!! I headed downstairs with my early riser (Gavin) while the other two finished getting ready (our goal was to get on the shuttle by 5am). An awesome front-desk host (sorry - I'm really bad at getting names) hooked me up with a Starbucks Redeye (best coffee I had till Kona - but that's getting way ahead) and had great breakfast trays put together for us (bagels, cream cheese, juices for the kids, fruit, and a cereal bar in EACH one).

We chowed down, caught up on the weather, and had an exciting EARLY morning talking about everything we were looking forward to.

Heading to the shuttle at 4:55 we hit our only snag ... there were a LOT of people awaiting the early bus ... and the bus was parked out front ... but the driver was ??????????? :rolleyes1

Several guests were getting irate ... the front desk had called the driver ... but it was 5:10 and STILL no sign of him/her? FINALLY ... 5:15 and out of a parked car in the lot ... looking sleepy-eyed and groggy walked a guy still trying to assemble himself ... some in the group expressed their frustration, met by his apologies ... others shared looks (yup, me among them) and just chuckled cause it was obvious he'd had a late Friday night and "slept it off" in the parking lot.

We were on our way and dropped off at the Southwest gate at 5:25. Since my mom & dad had transported all our luggage :thumbsup2 we had only our carry-ons and check-in was a breeze. I did get hung-up in the detector 3 times before remembering the deep second layer pocket on my cargoes ... I was almost given the wand of death and escorted in the back room ... dang phone!!

We made it to the gate with plenty of time to spare and connected up with my brother and his family ... the kiddos settled in to play Nintendo DS and my brother and I talked plans as we sipped another Starbucks (though not as good as the Redeye from the Hyatt).

I'm constantly impressed with Southwest ... the plane left early ... arrived early. Aside from a rather intense gate attendant at Dulles who challenged my early boarding spot (it's sorta rough to travel with three young'uns who get nervous and sad if they're split up) the boarding was smooth, the flight was smooth, and we were touching down to a warm morning in Orlando at about 9:20am.

OK - here's the first "improvement tip" I'd send along to anyone at Disney who might lend me their Mickey ear :) ... there are NO STINKIN SIGNS to direct you to the Magical Express area until you're almost on top of it. Since the airport is laid out with an identical "A" and "B" side for ground transport it is easy to choose the wrong one ... to walk all the way to the end where you swear the Express area was ... then to have to ask a Mears desk attendant where it went ... only to find out you have to go to the complete opposite end of the main terminal (Yes, stop laughing, I led the pack as they trusted all my Disney knowledge ... there, I admit it).

Once we'd traversed Orlando to get to the correct side of the airport we were on the bus in no time and on our way to Disney's Port Orleans French Quarter Resort about 10:15:cool1:

We'd been in touch with mom & dad via text and they were already at POFQ and had done a pre-check-in. Though our rooms weren't ready yet ... and though we still had to register ... the trip somehow took hold at this moment and those Disney emotions began to flow! :wizard:

Our bus made drop-offs at Old Key West and Saratoga Springs (both seem nice - I've not been to either, but they don't have a certain 'something' I crave at Disney ... anyone else have another vantage point to offer on either?) ... then ...

we rounded the corner and the familiar wrought iron, gold, purple, and turquoise logo of the French Quarter came into view (can I admit I got goosebumps?) ... we pulled up outside the grand entrance (I LOVE the way this looks ... like you really are stepping into an outdoor courtyard in the Big Easy) .

We disembarked the bus ... walked into the air conditioned lobby as "Laurent" (a great and welcoming Port Orleans FQ host) held the door ... the upbeat jazz jumped into my soul ... the smell of fresh beignets lingered in the air ... my parents were polishing off an omelet and a Mickey Waffle ... and my eyes welled with joy!! We were here and Disney was as magical as ever ...

I plan to go back and polish up this entry with some pics ... but I didn't get them set-up for transfer yet

:cool1: Hooray!!! :woohoo:

I had been lurking through your pre-trip. I kept hanging out there and checking for updates, but you never came back there. I was worried you decided not to write after your frustrations... What a lovely surprise on a rotten day at work to find you! I really enjoy your stories and sense of humor!

Yes!! I can totally relate to the goose-bumpy feeling and eyes welling up thing. You are in good company! LOVED your intro from Redeyes to wrong sides.... Reminds me I need to brush up on my ME directions in the airport. I'm freaking out at the prospect of wasting 15 minutes of precious Disney time by traversing wrong hallways.

Did you get my PM about the DC Meet??

I'm here! Looking forward to more.

And totally cracking up at the potty stop 10 minutes out of the door. You are a far nicer parent than I. We'd have made them hold it.

Maybe not for 2 hours but...

:rotfl:
