Ok, so my big sister when asked around Christmas last year what she wanted to do for her special birthday said without hesitation "A trip to Disney to see the Princesses and to be a Princess" so what were we to do? I have to admit here to being a little cynical about the Disney money making machine, and that I have never been a Big Thrills Roller Coaster sort of girl, but as my sister wanted the trip I was happy to go with her. It was my first visit and her 2nd. She'd been with another sister and her child more than 10 years ago for a couple of days and couldn't remember very much about it.

We booked the Disneyland Hotel for convenience [her mobility isn't great - she has Down's Syndrome, chronic arthritis and early onset dementia and in recent months has very little stamina] and of course because she's "worth it". Then because there was a big party organised at the end of the month for the actual birthday, we booked for the second week in June.

Day 1 - Sunday 9th June

Flights were Aer Lingus from Dublin and were fine. Our luggage took an age to come onto the carousel though and I was worried our RSTransports transfer would have gone without us but our driver was waiting patiently and was very pleasant. We had the car to ourselves that journey.

Check in took for ever - we arrived at 3pm so maybe it was the time of day but I couldn't believe how long we had to queue. At first we were given a room in the East wing on the 2nd floor but I said I had mentioned sister's mobility problems when booking and we were changed to a ground floor room quite close to reception without any difficulty. The room was lovely and I loved the little terrace though we made no use of it all week. I took these photos on my mobile phone to show my girlfriends and when my sister's memory card broke on the Tuesday they were the only photos we had of Sunday and Monday.

We had to wait for luggage but I was keen to get into the park before dinner - we had booked a table in Inventions at 6pm - so off we went. It was pouring and sister was none too pleased so I had the bright idea of getting on the train round the park. We had left sister's blue badge in our luggage so couldn't go to City Hall to get the disability pass but we were allowed on the train at the disabled entrance anyway. The rain had eased by the time we got to Discoveryland so we jumped off there and used our fastpasses on Buzz Lightyear which got the thumbs up from sister. After a wander around we walked back to the hotel and changed for dinner. Our luggage had arrived and our beds had been turned down - sister couldn't get over the chocolate coins.

We called into the shop on the way over to dinner to buy an autograph book and pen and I enquired about the princess makeover for Tuesday when we had booked lunch at the Auberge. I pointed out sister and asked discreetly if they would allow her to have a makeover and the CM went and got the diary. Foolishly I took that as a "yes" and then included sister in the discussion that followed. The assistant asked what time we wanted the makeover - pointed out the price list and I chose the package we needed then she asked what age sister was. I said she was almost 50 and the CM closed the diary and said they couldn't do a makeover for an over 12. I was really taken aback that she would have let us get that far before saying so and I asked her if she had really thought sister might be under 12. I didn't want to make a fuss though so we went on to dinner.

Sister loved the characters but ate very little - I loved it all and ate far too much! We had a lovely window table in front of the buffet and our server, Marie-Claude, was lovely - looked after us really well. We had 5 different characters who all gave sister loads of attention - Mickey, Gepetto, Chip, Eeyore and Goofy. We got lots of fab photos with them too but sadly these all went with the broken memory card as did the video I took of Chip linking arms with sister and gently dancing her down the dining room and back again. It was very special and sister was enchanted with it all.

After dinner sister was exhausted but I persuaded her to come with me over to City Hall to get the disabled pass sorted. We were looked after by Jan who was great and he gave us lots of advice about where to go to see the parades and Dreams show and how to avoid some of the queues. He gave her a Happy Birthday sticker and put her on the phone to Mickey for a Happy Birthday phone call even though we said this was a birthday trip in advance of the actual birthday. I couldn't keep her awake any longer so we were good little girls in bed by 9pm that evening. :littleangel:s on :cloud9:

Lovely start....we were there the same time and also had a camera issue.....mine got lost with all of my photos along with it! Your room looked lovely and it was great that you could get a pass for your sister. looking forward to reading more X

Lovely report :) I saw your photos of your sister in another thread, which made me stop lurking and start posting!

A lovely start, lol its always the way with the buffets, too many nice things!

looking forward to reading all about your trip.

i can't believe I've left it so long to come back to this. Life is busy, busy, busy. Thanks for all the kind words - I read about your camera Disneyfanswicklow, so sorry - at least we only lost the first couple of days photos.

So back to day 2, we were awake bright and early after our 9 o'clock bedtime the evening before. I asked sister if she would be happy to do EMH and come back for breakfast afterwards and she said fine. We dressed rather optimistically in shorts and T shirts then headed out to the park about 8.15 whereupon we discovered it wasn't really warm enough yet for shorts. :rotfl:

It didn't bother me and at that stage sister wasn't worried so off we went up main street and through the castle into Fantasyland. We went on Peter Pan's Flight first and sister was a bit scared by the darkness but I cuddled up close to her and ooooh'd and aaaaah'd at the twinkly lights and said how pretty everything was and she perked up. I really liked this ride.

Next we went to the Mad Hatters Tea Cups and here sister realised she would have to sit on the cold plastic with bare legs and nearly changed her mind. I gave her my fleece to sit on which saved the day. The ride was ok but not one we felt the need to repeat on our stay.

The music of It's a Small World had us hooked straight away so we went on that next and we loved it so much we went straight back on again afterwards.

On to Discoveryland and it was here I momentarily lost my mind and decided we would go on Space Mountain.

I don't really understand now what thought processes allowed me to think this was a suitable ride as I am not a roller coaster sort of girl and while sister might have been in earlier years, she is quite timid these days.

It was a 2 1/2 minute nightmare - I did understand the thrill of it and thought the lighting effects were superb but the entire time I kept thinking "what have I done to her?" We were shaking about so much my glasses were in danger of falling off so I had to press my head against the padded restraint to keep them in place. I couldn't reach her hand to reassure her and I kept saying "i am so sorry" over and over.

When we came to a stop we were in total shock, both of us shaking uncontrollably. Her glasses had come off during the ride and I feared they were lost but amazingly they were on the floor at her feet. I promised her we would never do a ride like that again and hugged her for ages until we felt we could walk properly and I took her back to DLH for breakfast.

We were seated in the Californian Grill side of the restaurant and once again the buffet was amazing. Sister just wanted a "fry" so I loaded her plate with sausage, bacon, eggs, potatoes, tomato and beans which she ate slowly while I had several courses including beautiful fresh fruit salad, a plate of cooked food, croissant, danish, brioche and donuts. I discreetly wrapped a few of these for sister to eat later as she couldn't manage them there and then. The fruit juice was delicious and I drank several glasses as well as some tea. At this point I have to say the french do not do tea well - hot, not boiling water and the tea bag provided separately!

Quick change of clothes for sister and next stop was to call at reception to ask to speak to a manager about the princess makeover for my sister. We had to wait a while but eventually Olivia, the shop manager came and was absolutely brilliant. This thread has the story and some photos so I won't repeat it all here.

By the time we got things sorted it was mid day so we went over to the Studios to have fun. We did Playhouse Disney Live - ok, Cinemagique - incredible!, Cars Quatre Roues Rally - ok, Flying Carpets over Agrabah - delightful. We were going to go on Slinky but sister took a look and said no which was fine. We were lucky enough to arrive in Toon Plaza at 2.15 just as the queue began to form for meet Minnie. She loved the meet and we got some official photos which I was so glad of after the memory card was damaged.

We found the roped off disabled area to watch the Stars and Cars Parade which was wonderful.

After a snack break we wandered back to the main park and into Adventureland. Sister saw Pirates and insisted we go on POTC. I couldn't find the disabled entrance to this ride but the queue wasn't long so we just walked in the usual entrance. Big mistake. The walkway was so poorly lit that sister really struggled to put one foot in front of the other. One problem her dementia can cause is spatial confusion with changes in colour / tone and the wooden boards looked like steps to her so she kept trying to climb invisible stairs. Inevitably even though I kept reassuring her that we were on flat ground she stumbled and landed heavily on her hip which was very painful for her. At that stage I'd have given up and gone back but was convinced that we were actually closer to the ride than to the entrance so persuaded her to carry on. At the boarding area waiting for our turn a French couple behind us allowed their child to push and shove and as sister was already upset after the fall I changed places with her to protect her. When the kid then stamped on my foot I glared and yelled "ow" so loud that the parents couldn't possibly ignore it and moved him away from us - result!

We were boarded in the front row which I loved but and really enjoyed the ride - waved at the people eating in the Blue Lagoon. Poor sister was just fed up though and hid her face in my neck for the entire ride. This photo makes me laugh so much.

We went back to the hotel then for a lie down as I'd hoped to go to the Wild West show that evening but sister wouldn't sleep and by the time we should have been getting ready she only wanted to go to bed. I had to make do with a beer from the mini bar and a stale brioche from breakfast for my dinner.

We'd missed Dreams for a 2nd night as well and I was beginning to think we might never see it!

Another lovely update!

Sorry to hear about your Space Mountain trauma! So lucky that you could find your Sister's glasses! :scared1:

I really like the photo of the two of you on POTC - I hope she wasn't too badly hurt after her fall. :goodvibes

Goodness Gracious Me - I never did get back to finish this TR.

I'm gonna try to finish it now and post the rest of our photos.

Day 3 - Tuesday

I didn't even suggest EMH this morning as today was Princess Day. We had a leisurely breakfast and did a few rides in Fantasyland including the Carousel before heading back to DLH for the makeover. We changed sister into her princess dress in our room and went to the shop as Olivia, the lovely manager, had asked us to call by so she could come with us to the makeover station.

I posted the photos of the Princess day in this thread so please forgive me if I don't put them on again.

We went back to the hotel late afternoon for a sleep as I wanted to go to BBWWS that evening. We both slept and with sister changed out of her princess dress we went off to see the show. As she can't manage more than a few steps I asked about disabled access and we were taken by a CM to a lift then through the kitchen area and to seats in the very top row of the arena. There was very poor lighting and it was difficult to see our food but we did enjoy the show. Afterwards we had to be escorted down through the kitchens and staff areas to get out again.

We caught the end of Dreams from the bottom of main street - just enough to make me determined that we would see it in full the next day. :lovestruc

Yesterday was such a success. During breakfast this morning we got out the park guide and marked off what we still wanted to do.

High on our list was to Meet Mickey so we went off to find this first. We used the disabled entrance and after a short wait we got in to see the mouse himself. Sister was beside herself with happiness.

We had fun in the Studios, had a burger for lunch at La Coulisse and did some shopping then back to DLH for our nap. The terrace outside our room was taped off like a crime scene - I was a bit perplexed until I read a flyer on the table telling us they were window cleaning at the hotel that week.

After our nap we watched the Parade in the main park then had dinner in Inventions again.

Sister was tired and feeling a bit poorly - she found the food in Inventions far too rich so ate very little and in spite of lovely tender Character interaction she was pretty fed up most of the evening. Characters were Gepetto, Suzy and Perla, Mickey and Gideon.

After dinner we went to watch Dreams. We found the disabled area after a bit of difficulty - I had assumed it was in the same place as the parade but it wasn't - and we saw it from beginning to end. Absolutely enchanting. I knew I had to see it again the following, our final, night.

Straight home to bed which doesn't take long at all when you're only going to the DLH.

Today was wet which had sister in a sulk from the off but i insisted we hadn't come all that way just to sit in the hotel on our last full day. We had light raincoats with us - we're from Ireland so we know all about rain and go prepared :rotfl2: - so we put them on and headed out. We got a ticket to come back and see a princess which I knew would please sister and then we went to Frontierland where we'd not yet spent any time. Most of the attractions there aren't in sister's line - no Phantom Manor or BTM for her - but we waited for the next River Boat cruise and did it.

Afterwards we were walking through the castle into Fantasyland and had a random meet with Tweedle Dee. Very few people were about so we only had to wait a couple of minutes for our turn.

We had another go on Buzz.

We also went to Captain EO and rode Orbitron. Sister found it very difficult to exit Orbitron and a CM had to come help me get her out as we were holding up the ride.

Over to the Studio and we watched Cinemagique again - definitely one of my favourite attractions - and saw Animagique. It was ok but I preferred Cinemagique. The art of Disney Animation was just ok too - not really my sort of thing i suppose. We did the Tram Tour which i though was superb but sister was pretty scared at the fire and annoyed at the water. Again we were in the front row and again she spent most of the ride with her face buried in my neck waiting for it to be over.

Meeting the princess was next and hopefully made up for everything. Because we had been at the Auberge on Tuesday I asked who the princesses were and when they said Snow White and Belle I asked if we could meet Belle.

Belle was lovely, really sweet and talked to my sister for ages then we took a few photos. Her dress was exquisite - the costumes are so well made.

When I had peeled her off Belle I took sister back to the hotel for our nap - I had booked Cafe Mickey for dinner.

We ate quite early - our booking was for 6.15. The food was pretty awful. I had a steak and sister chicken but my steak was inedible it was so tough. I did have a lovely cocktail - a planter something - we had premium vouchers so thought I would use the difference in price for drinks and in fact the bill came to a little under and the waiter grinned from ear to ear when he worked this out so I figured he must have been allowed to keep the difference - good luck to him.

Characters were Mickey, Minnie, Tigger, Eeyore, Pluto and Goofy and sister was very pleased with all the cuddles she got from them. Minnie in particular gave her loads of attention, coming back to our table for more cuddles before we left.

All in all Cafe Mickey was worth it for the character interaction.

We did some shopping for presents as we walked back through the village and dropped them in our room when we went to get some warmer jackets to go watch Dreams. It was even better second time around and we made a couple of friends talking to people who were around us. We went to bed very happy girls again.

We were being picked up at 1pm today for our flight back to Dublin so after Breakfast we checked out then made a beeline for the Princess Pavilion to get a ticket to come back and see a princess that morning. We were in luck.

We did some of our favourite rides in Fantasyland while we waited for that - Peter Pan's flight, Casey Junior, Storybook boats and It's a small world. We did some more last minute shopping and then it was time to go to the Pavilion.

I asked again who the princess was and it was Ariel or Cinderella so having already met Cinders asked for Ariel. Much to my surprise, though sister didn't notice, Ariel was the identical twin sister of Belle from the previous day. ;)

Again she was charming and when sister told her where she lived and said that if she was ever there she was very welcome to visit her Ariel said that next time she was swimming anywhere near the County Down coast she would do just that. I was pretty impressed at her knowledge of geography!

We went back to the hotel and it was time for our final treat - cocktails in the Fantasia bar. Sister wouldn't deviate from her usual Sprite but I had a Blue Glowtini - I'd been looking forward to one all week after reading about them on DIS. Slainte.

Slainte!

Great report! and what a fantastic way to help your sister celebrate her birthday.
Love the official photos with Mickey and Minnie, and the princess makeover. Where did you get the costume? it's fab!

Thanks everyone - we had such a great time. Have just booked again for this year and couldn't not finish this TR before perhaps starting a new one. :cheer2:

dhidra, the dress was from Amazon. It's an adult dressing up dress but not a disney one as all the adult Disney princess dresses I could find were "sexy" ones which were definitely not appropriate.
