A Trip of Firsts ~ WBTA 2018 Trip Planning - 7/24/18 Update

i'll be meeting a friend at Covent Garden. It is mostly food - restaurants, cheese shops, some buskers. A few stalls of maybe crafts or imported stuff from India. The Transport Museum is fun and Mark Wahlburg has a restaurant that looked poised to open the last time I was there?

Did you try this place for tickets? https://seatplan.com/london/lion-king/

UPDATE

WE MOVED!! :cheer2: We finally moved, the day before my birthday and it's just been non-stop since. Thankfully, we put things that we MUST take on the trip in one of my carry-on suitcases. We also put clothes that we may wear on the cruise in a box marked 'Cruise Clothes' lol. So, we had a little bit of organization, but now we really need to look through all of our boxes and start throwing things in an open suitcase ... once we have room to do so.
Picture showing our new place ^_^

In cruise related news, I passed off the budgeting for our land based expenses to Rich ... because he needs to understand the hard work that goes into planning this. Thus far we have about $200 in a little British Telephone Booth piggy bank since moving ate into some of our savings (sad :(). But Rich has just over a month to do some more side jobs and increase that amount!
I'll try to keep you updated on that when I get word of his plans.

I had a hard time but I think the Lion King. As it happens, I booked afternoon tea at the Savoy for 5:15 and it is just a few blocks from
the Lyceum theater. I wanted the Ritz or Claridges but they were full up on Saturday, and Harrods website does not take reservations. I emailed
them and an nice gentleman emailed back and said he would see what he could do, but I bagged it and got my rez at the Savoy instead. I wanted to
check out Covent Gardens besides the museums and Harrods.
Lion King has been out in theatres for a bit, right? It's great it's still on, I've heard it's quite good :) I would LOVE to see Frozen but ... you know ... budgeting.
Oh, I heard the Savoy is pretty good too, quality food. I think I looked up their menu once and it looked decent.
Huh, Ritz is full on Saturday? Glad I reserved when I did, goodness.

Moving is always tough. I moved 8 years ago and still have boxes in the garage I haven't gone through yet. My excuse it's either too hot or too cold to work in the garage. I have been selling some stuff on eBay and have made $700! Probably won't need that much (for expenses) but at least I have it. Everything else is already on plastic and I am paying it off as quickly as I can.

Congrats on your new place! Looks nice! Can I use part of your garage? I can't get my car in mine.

One of the ships I was on (high end) with my Mom had afternoon tea which was very civilized. It was followed by a little dance class (ballroom) where rich old ladies danced with male 'escorts' who were actually PAID to cruise or got their cruise paid for. Always way more older women than older men when you get to be a certain age. Disney should try having "tea" one afternoon?? I know they have little pastries and a place to get coffee. This would be maybe a little more 'formal"?

Sounds like you are very organized as far as packing goes. Good for you? I am starting to really think about what I am REALLY going to need on the ship. Sometimes I pack like I'm going on the SS Minnow and have stuff for in case we are all stranded on a deserted island somewhere. I get carried away. Watch too much Survivor.

I'll be leaving Sept 5 which is exactly 6 weeks from today. When do you leave on your Norwegian flight? I have flown premium class and my hints are:
1. Turn the air vent on before you sit down. I got warm on the way over to the UK but it was much nicer coming back when I turned the air on.
2. Even though you think the stuff under the seat in front of you is accessible it is NOT when the people in front of you recline your seat. Literally you have to crawl on the floor to get at it. So on my return flight I had a zip lock bag with stuff I might need during the flight and had that in the seat back pocket, which is not very deep. Stuff like chapstick and my little travel toothbrush.
3. I did NOT eat on either flight. Had wonderful meals in the airports before hand. Food looked OK but comes in a cardboard box. Bring snacks? I had nuts but they announced that someone had a nut allergy so if anyone had brought nuts, we couldn't eat them. Bad luck!
4. The bread is great. Ask for two rolls! i DID have bread!
5. Entertainment was very good - worked well. Touch screen. Here are the current offerings. Might change for September?
http://entertainment.norwegian.com/...143.1532545007-1902646437.1531491238#/onboard
6. Neither lounge was great but it is a quiet place to sit and there is a limited amount of free food. Mostly drinks, snacks.
7. Oh yes, the seats, though they recline, are not well padded. I put my coat behind my lower back for lumbar support and had a cheap little travel pillow from Target for my head. The headrest hit be funny - at the top of my skull - because I am short. Just FYI.
8. One more thing - there is a button to your left on the armrest to extend your footrest to make it longer. Took me a while to find it but it's there!

Keep up the updates! Coming fast now!

Congratulations on your successful move. Now you can relax a tiny bit. Just a little over a month to go!
I know the Savoy is $$$$ but what the heck, how many times do we get to do this? Certainly not in Vermont!
My sister-in-law just got back from England and said it was HOT. She also said that just getting through Heathrow then from Heathrow to the hotel
with baggage ( and her friend used to live there so she had a guide) was a chore on the tubes and she has one less change than I. I think I will have to consider a cab as being by myself and my bad knee may not like all those stairs with suitcase and bag. I know it is a big expense by why make myself miserable?
Guess a few more days of overtime for me!

Are you heading into London? You can take the Heathrow Express and THEN take a taxi. Save you a lot of cash. (£45 - £70 by taxi)
https://www.heathrow.com/transport-and-directions/trains/heathrow-express
Direct train goes straight to Paddington in 15 minutes. Taxi can take up to an hour depending on traffic and time of day. Just a thought!

I think my plane arrives at Terminal 2 so the Heathrow express might be the way to go, then an Taxi at Paddington.

I hate it when it's hot someplace I don't expect it to be hot. The 4 trips I have taken to Europe over the last couple years, I have always overpacked winter type clothes.

Trying to save money and being comfortable with the Underground, the last time I was there, I took the Tube. It was NOT fun. It was very crowded and I had to stand with one hand on a pole and one on my luggage. Seemed to take forever. May have been morning rush hour but I can't remember. PLUS a lot of the changes from one Tube station to the next involve stairs. I can do stairs but NOT with luggage. (I have a bad knee too!)

Here is a link to information about how to avoid stairs in the London Underground. There is a map and a brochure you can look at in a box in the middle of the page.

Wow, that's awesome about ebay! I need to try and do that now that we've finally moved lol
Thank you :) Haha no, we only have a 1 car garage :p My boyfriend's car is longer and wider then mine ... BUUUT he uses his car everyday, so mine gets to sit outside :(

Palo did have afternoon tea a few years back. Okay, I think 2012 but ... still a bit. I have photos :D I am sad they got rid of it though. I think the brunch became so popular that they had to open additional times for it.

Lol, when one goes abroad, it's always good to have a bit more then what you normally take anyways. Well, at least for medication for colds and such. When I went to Tibet, I had a bit of cold medicine but I was sick for 4 days and, thankfully, someone let me use their extra meds. So, yeah ... bring meds like you're going to get stranded!

Oh my gosh, 6 weeks ... less now. It's so far away, yet so close. Our flight leaves at 11pm on the 5th, I believe. But, we are traveling through the whole day from Minnesota with a stop in Chicago and then (hopefully) enough time to transfer between LGA and JFK for Norwegian. Fingers crossed.

Thank you for the hints! I'll be sure to have something smaller for in the seat. I usually do but I was having fun planning my larger carry-ons that I kind of spaced. I'm bringing 2 of my Disney Dooney bags with me for onboard but they aren't small enough to put in the front pouch, so I'll need to dig out a non-Dooney for that.
AAAND I'm not name dropping to brag, I'm super excited because these bags were gifts and I finally get to use them for a Disney vacation ... just so excited! I like bags ...

Congratulations on your successful move. Now you can relax a tiny bit. Just a little over a month to go!

Thank you :) Nope, no relaxation because of having to settle in (groceries and what not). Just got a new knife block/set yesterday lol. Though, I hope next week I can. My boyfriend won't relax at all this month because he's working extra jobs for extra vacation funds. BUT we will relax on the ship :)

EXACTLY! That's why we did the Ritz (we liked their menu better) but it's the same thing. Afternoon tea in England: Go big or go home, right?

Oh really? It does seem to be warmer weather this season all over the world, Japan has made new national heat records this summer. Crazy hot (and humid) there. So you think we should pack a bit more summery items? I was planning on packing for all the seasons but with minimal summer.

Truly, it's worth the expense if certain parts of travel is hard on your health. The tubes are fine for me but they are rather loud and a tad smelly, the new(er) stations have escalators :D But yeah, the stairs are horrid. I did that in Japan during the summer (BAAAD) with over a month's worth of stuff (plus souvenirs since it was the last part of the trip) and it was BRUTAL. London is better with accessibility but if you run into an older station, getting a cab is just smart.

Well I am not as spry as I used to be and I have a trick knee (the joys of getting older) and I know I will be tuckered out after many hours in a cramped plane.

I got my Mickey mail yesterday with Cruise Docs....it is all now becoming REAL!!!!!!! I am getting a bit antsy about London....but it will be fine I am sure. I was super
scared when I went to Edinburgh Scotland last year, but I survived quite well and I got to see first run "Masterpiece Theater" on the Telly in my beautiful room
with lots of Tea and snacks from the front desk "Treasure chest" (cookies, chocolates and other yummies in a large wooden box).

UPDATE

Just a small, yet important update :) Our documents with luggage tags came on August 3rd (our anniversary!)
38284398_547696950085_150615509409202176_o.jpg

This was mailed to Eagan, MN on July 30th, so about a 4/5 day mailing period. So we received our Mickey mail about 5 weeks out from our departure date (using USPS).

Also, just because updates are a bit slow now ... Here is our Fish Extender!! :D
38534403_547716969965_490473320899149824_o.jpg

We made it ourselves back in 2016 where its inaugural sailing was the Eastbound Panama Canal cruise.
The image at the top is printed, customized to current cruise, and slipped into a thin pocket. The top part of the blue Mickey ribbon border has a magnet that closes with another magnet in sewn in the back.
The pouches were made to be taken off/switched around in case we add more people or want a different arrangement.
Rich helped by cutting the wooden dowels at work :)

Our FE will be used for part of a FE exchange, as well as a Tea, and Recipe Exchange. So, it's nice to have a little pouch to hang up, even if you don't participate in a FE because some people may want to give small surprise gifts (pixie dust) or you can use for other exchanges.

YAY!! So you got yours on the 2nd? That's pretty awesome! Yeah, once I see those luggage tags, it's kind of giddy for me too :)

What are you antsy about with London? Just it being another country? That treasure chest sounds like the best kind of treasure chest, ever :hyper:

Naahh that doesn't bother me, just a gigundus big city. I grew up in NY on the Island but went into the city to work for a while. I have been living in Vermont for
close to 30 years now so my CITY GAL attitude is pretty rusty

Coming up soon, now! I leave on the 5th, too. Out of Newark. Hope the weather cooperates and we all make our flights! I am starting to pack the extra stuff like books (yes, I know, but I want to read!) and various things I'll need, I think? Clothes last. I did make some magnet art for my cabin door although I still don't have one yet. There is one cabin still available with horrible (noise) reviews and I SO hope I don't get that one. If I do I will go to Guest Services and ask for ANY OTHER CABIN! I know I am bringing too much. Maybe I will change my mind about some things the night before. The tea exchange sounds like a really lovely idea!

Amunet - your FE is beautiful! And it sounds like Norwegian Air is doing well and got over it's growing pains! You will like the Premium Class - at least you can sleep? I have a day flight. Will be different as I usually fly overnight.

Happy travels everyone!

We will be packing a book for each of us as well :) Since we will be traveling all day, figure a book would be helpful since it doesn't need to charge lol

Thank you very much :) We worked a bit on that FE, he took the dowels to work and cut them! Yeah, Norwegian just sent out some emails talking about how the plane will be switched. I've been researching extensively and have prepared myself for this and the different aircrafts.
Yes, Premium sounds pretty awesome! I've flown International First and Business Class before and that's just like, opulence (I used to work for a major airline).

Update

Well, it's the last week-ish until we depart! Lots of things left to do still:
  • Finish FE Gifts (they are evil and I can't wait to be done!)
  • Put finishing touches on Tea Exchange gift
  • Print out GTY list for people
  • Fill up medications so I have enough for the trip
  • Reserve transportation from home to airport (will be done this Thursday)
  • Print out maps
  • Return library book
  • Pack

Though, we did cross of a few of the last remaining things from our list, PLUS added some more plans for in ports:
  • We set up international usage for our time in ports. We have Verizon and it's basically, if you turn the phone on while in the country, we will be charged $10 in Europe for 24 hours of that service. We are planning on using it in Halifax for sure ($5 a day for Canada) and possibly on all days pre-cruise. We shall find out for sure after the trip :)
  • Rich ordered the Foreign currency (details below). Since I put him in charge of that planning, it was up to him if he wanted to order money before hand or use the ATMs when we get there. Since it's his first time to Europe, he wanted to order ahead of time. It is fun having a wad of foreign bank notes, they feel like play money! But they are not.
  • We added onto Halifax, where we will be visiting the public garden for a free tour, then walking back to the cruise terminal via the waterfront with stops at the Maritime Museum.
  • Also added a bit to Saint John, we are still trying to finalize what we will be doing for this port and Sydney.
  • I WAS ABLE TO GET A PALO BRUNCH RESERVATION!! It was when DCL was compiling lists for people with private brunch reservations, which opened up slots for us lowly people :p I'm pretty dang excited. It's on our last day at sea: Sept. 19th!
    • So our Palo reservations are not on the dates I wanted, so I am going to try and change them onboard to our preferred dates.
  • I called DCL ahead of time to add a few requests to our reservation:
    • A nice and patient serving team. I specified this because we had a bad experience last cruise with the team treating us differently because we didn't interact much. I have rather severe anxiety and sometimes I just can't people. So, needing a team that can deal with that. I suggested possibly servers that are good with kids that have Autism (since I have similar aspects when it comes to socialization).
    • That we have the cabin attendant service our cabin once a day instead of twice. I made it clear we definitely want the evening turn down but we do not need the morning because it causes too much stress for me. When I have panic attacks or just get overwhelmed with all the people interaction, I need a safe place to decompress and having the room attendant in that space when I need it makes things much worse. This is something we also discovered on our last trip. Last trip wasn't all roses and daisies.
    • Also added onboard credit, which is outlined a bit below.

Rich went out and got a luggage scale since Norwegian has a check in bag weight of 44lbs (20kg) and the carryon AND personal item must not weigh more then 22lbs (10kg). Since we have premier class, we will be able to have 2 check in bags at 44lbs each BUT we don't have Premium Flex ticket, which would increase hand baggage weight to 33lbs (15kg). SO ... I have to really keep an eye on the weight for our hand baggage (carry on + personal item).

Also, Rich did end up with a budget and I'm sharing how much we've planned on bringing for the trip. All USD totals for foreign currency was based on our credit union's fees and exchange rate at the time:

England: We have planned £420. This includes pre-cruise and the port of Portland. The largest chunk is for tea at the Ritz.
USD cost = $566.96

Ireland: 50 Euro. We have prepaid for our tours and such so we are just budgeting for a small souvenir for ourselves and my Mother (she's very proud of our Irish heritage).
USD cost = $60.50

Canada: $60CAD. This includes cab rides, snacks and maybe some maple syrup! Not huge spenders here since we live in MN and Canada isn't horribly far from us if we have a huge craving for authentic Canadian maple syrup ;)
USD cost = $48.85

United States: $175. Of course, we don't need to order currency for here BUT these are expenses for while in the states during travel. This includes all transportation via Lyft (home to airport, LGA to JFK, cruise terminal to LGA) and food for at the airport.

Onboard: We have been saving Disney Gift Cards from holidays and birthdays, over the past 1.8 years ... and we have $465 added to our account! We know $120 of that will be taken for Palo for our two reservations, but after that ... who knows!? We plan on watching lots of movies at the theater (popcorn fill ups), fancy special drink during sail away party (saving the cups!), occasional alcohol like a drink of the day or wine during dinner (not huge drinkers and not every day but this is a special trip!), and at least $100 in pins lol. We love collecting pins, especially from DCL. Oh, also plan to get some WBTA and 20th anniversary specific merchandise. Nothing huge but at least a hat for Richard and pin for me.

Extra Funds: Whatever extra funds we get between now and the cruise will most likely be put towards a deposit for future booking and/or more OBC.
Rich has been working lots of side jobs to help cover costs, in fact, he's out on one now.

While these totals might be small for most that go on Disney cruises, these amounts are not small for us. We have been saving for almost 2 years to pay for all of this, none of it is on a credit card, all debit. Due to health reasons, I haven't been able to work since December 2017 and we've had to save on just Rich's income. Through moving, Rich being laid off, and moving again, I think saving the above for expenditures is a great feat of budgeting and keeping to that budget.
I am proud of both of us for being able to endure what we have since May 2017 (when we first booked) until now.
I also feel incredibly blessed/grateful to be able to be where we are now and still be able to afford a lovely apartment, running clean water and a full fridge. I am just so thankful to be able to have everything that I do and be able to take part in such a grand adventure.
Thank you for following along.

I will try to update again just before we leave and possibly small updates during travel day :) I plan to bring a notebook to record our trip so that I can create a full on Trip Report afterwards.

You are SO on top of things, Amunet! Good for you . . .

INTERESTING that you are requesting just one room service per day! Me, too! But I will go with the morning one. Sometimes in hotels I will request NO housekeeping for a couple of days. It's just me and I don't need new sheets or whatever on a daily basis. I would call DCL but I don't have a cabin number yet so . . . were they respectful of your requests?

Also, with Verizon, if you are on the Go Unlimited, Beyond Unlimited or Above Unlimited OR the now discontinued but grandfathered NEW Unlimited plans, your talk, text and data while in Mexico and Canada is included. They throttle your data after the first 512 MB per day but otherwise . . . . that's 3 good days of not having to pay for the Disney wifi.

With the International Travel Pass - I usually would turn it on at NOON on Day #1 (or some set time later in the day) and within the 24 hours I could still check my email the morning of Day#2. Then maybe on Day #3 i would again activate it at Noon and it would go to noon on Day #4. If you start it later in the day, you can squeeze two days out of the 24 hours, if that makes sense? I won't be in London long enough for this to matter, but you might??

Calling from the Magic is also a possibility on Verizon - but it's $2.99 a minute. Good to know in an emergency though. As long as you're not calling anywhere that puts you on hold.

Congrats on the Palo dinner! And I've really enjoyed reading all your pre-trip reports! Going alone, I don't have anyone to get excited with so this has been great. I see that there is a Facebook page with over 400 people on it. But even still, I just can't seem to get on board with FB . . .

Happy Travels!

Thank you, I feel like I need to be on top of it because my boyfriend runs around like a chicken with his head cut off when things get more stressful. Plus, to make sure we can afford things and not be wasteful with food, kind of need to plan in a bit more detail than usual.

Yeah, I feel the same way with the sheets and stuff. I can go a day or two in a hotel without a turn down but on the cruise ship, I definitely need at least one so we can get our chocolates and next day planner!
Yes, they were respectful with making the notes, she was a bit awkward because it sounded like a request that isn't made often. I stressed that I understand they need to go in at least once a day for security but the rest is for health reasons.
The Disney agent said to speak directly with our cabin attendent when we board to make sure they know.
Many people were assigned cabins today, so perhaps you've got yours too?

I understand with the days. We will only use the phone if we NEED to and definitely not using data or anything onboard.

Thank you! Yes, Brunch is exciting. I'm glad you're enjoying it, it's really nice to have an appreciative audience (including those that like the posts).
I think you're sharing your excitement with me :) I understand about FB, I am there too but this late in the game, it doesn't matter if you don't join because everyone is just posting like crazy, even things that are kind of just them being excited and releasing that excitement. All the group thingies are closed so, I think you're just fine without being in it, no need to fret or anything.

I have been on that FB page. I have enjoyed interacting because my last (and very first) DCL I was pretty much alone and a rookie to boot.
I actually found out that a couple of people from my last cruise are on this one so it was definitely worth it to poke around there.
Anyway, I am very excited that the time is almost up. I still have lots to do and very little time to do it as I am working up until the day I leave for London on
Wednesday. I have done lots of London research and now I think I am just going to relax and let fate take it's course. If I can walk it...great, if I have to
Tube it or cab it...fine too! Got my pirates hat all done up for Pirate night pirate:, got my Tiara and necklace for Frozen nightprincess:, I am ready to say HELLO WORLD!
See you all on the Magic my friends...I am sure we will all have a crackin' good time!!party:
