I don't understand this. Brutally honest about what? Why you are sending your regrets in an RSVP?

I don't think your reason is ever necessary when responding to an invitation.

I was kind of wondering, if you meet for dinner would she avoid things like politics? Or, do you really want to meet her for dinner. I am just trying to figure out if you are friends. Or if this is one of those people you really would not like to have to deal with, but just do! Anyhow, I don't think a full explanation should be asked for.
