Okay, since I bought my camera 2 months ago, I decided to do some test shots and have them printed at Future Shop (www.futurephoto.com) and at Costco.
Here's my findings:
Future Shop.
I was NOT impressed! It was super easy to do however, since you don't even have to go to the store, you just upload them onto their server and then they send the order to your store of choice. They were ready the next day, which was nice but the quality of the paper they used was so poor! It had these divots all over the photograph...hard to describe and I don't think that a picture would do it justice but it was almost as if I took a knife or fork or something and just poked at the picture. It's not noticeable when you look directly over the photo but on any kind of angle you can totally see it!
There was however, surprisingly, quite a bit of difference in the photos as far as the size of the picture that I used. I took the same picture 4 times on 4 different size settings. The smallest 640 x 480(SMALL) pixels came out quite blurry. I would never have used it in a scrapbook. The second size 1024 x 768 (M1)pixels was a lot clearer! And the next two sizes 1600 x 1200(M2) and 2272 x 1704(L) pixels came out great, the larger one being the best quality but not too much of a difference between the two.
I took two sets of photos
A- hubby and dog in bright sunshine with bright green grass in the background. There was a HUGE difference between SMALL and M1 and the next two. The M2 size was great when viewed on it's own but when compared to L, you could tell that it wasn't perfect quality.
B - close-up of hubby, just face and shoulders in the shade with grey/white background. S was the same, not as blurry as first set of photos but still not great quality. M1 and M2 were pretty good quality. M2 had great quality for his face but his sweater and the background, when compared to L was noticeably not as sharp and vivid as the L.
So, I guess basically what I am saying is that I will keep my settings on L. I was VERY impressed with the quality of the photo, even though the paper they used was not great.
Each print was $ .50
Costco
I just returned home with my prints that I got done at the 1-hr photo stop inside of Costco. While the photo paper they used was much much better than Future Shop's, the quality of the print was NOT very good! Hubby's face is slightly orangey and the colours are just not as crisp and vivid as those done at FS. The white and grey in the background looks slightly grey and brown and not very sharp.
It was quick and easy to do as they have a little computer terminal set up where you insert your digital media and just choose your photos and then it prints out a receipt and you take the receipt to the photo counter.
I also took 3 pics of the same subject with different compression settings and the superfine is the ONLY way to go! It was a picture of my dog and his fur on the fine and normal settings looked terrible!
Each print was $.29
Well, since I was not satisfied with either of those printing options, I guess I will also take my pics to London Drugs and to Wal Mart to see how they size up! Wish me luck!
I also printed some photos out on my HP Deskjet 960 C printer and was very impressed with the results!
