Hotels in San Diego with day rooms.

There is a very big chance my children and I will be on a red eye flight home after disembarkation in San Diego following the WBPC. They will not be in the frame of mind for site seeing or I'd take them to the zoo. Is it possible to get a room for the day near the airport for under $100.

I read that San Diego doesn't have any international flights leaving at night - which is where day rooms come in handy. People who fly in on a domestic flight and then take off maybe 8 hours later to far flung places. The hardest part is what to do with your luggage! Pre 9/11 there would be luggage lockers. No more! I had about 8 hours in the Boston airport recently, between flights. Thought I'd be able to entertain myself but around the 5th hour I'd kinda had it.

AND most of the restaurants are on the other side of security - airside. I used info from this website called Sleeping in the Airport. At least it will help you find out comfortable places to stretch out:

I'd be tempted to go to the the tourist info or that place with the phones for shuttle pick ups and call a couple hotels when you get there and just ask. From what I read you can walk to downtown from the airport. Pack light???

The Keating Hotel in downtown San Diego has allowed day use rental in the past. Couldn't hurt to call and ask. 619-814-5700

While I love your idea of packing light it just isn't going to happen. We love to dress up and participate in several fish extenders. Plus it's a 14 night cruise. I plan to wash clothes twice.

Thanks so much for the link to Sleeping in Airports that will absolutely come in handy! ETA: They have a USO! That should be enough for us really. I don't know why I didn't think to check on that first.

Hi my friend, we were in SD last week for vacation. We stayed at the Grand Hyatt Manchester for part of the trip. It was two miles from the airport. We got there at anout 9:30am and they had a room ready for us. It is a huge hotel with many rooms. It may be worth checking out to see if they may have something for you early in the morning. Good luck!

PS I feel your pain, we had many hours to wait for our flight in NYC after our cruise. I did not like it.

In Boston, there are 4 terminals and there is a USO club which I can't use HOWEVER the nicest seats (without armrests) were just outside the USO club for regular folks to use. Nice quiet area, too. You might be able to standby for an earlier flight? If your kids are old enough, at least they can watch the pile of luggage while you go search for food . . . I had to lug all my stuff around. Even on wheels, it's annoying.

My girls are finally old enough to watch the luggage! Thankfully, the USO will also feed us all be it things like cup a noodle and refrigerated sandwiches.

Thank you. I'll add it to the list. So far the hotels I've found have a checkout of 3pm for day rooms which would leave us with many hours left to spend.

I just thought of something, I know you are a military family. The Naval base is *right* there. Do they have hospitality units you could use while you are waiting?

My other idea is to buy a day pass to the airport lounge. I researched it a bit on our trip as we had four hours to kill. When we had the long wait at Newark after we disembarked in NYC, that is what we did, went to an airport lounge.

All my best to you and the girls!

Thank you! Sometimes the USO on base is wonderful. I will check and see as well as their hotel. I've been so worried and you all have been so helpful.

The Lounges are usually airside, meaning you need to go through security and most airlines won't let you check your bags until 3 or 4 hours before flight time. So it might work for a couple hours but not all day. I don't think you can go through security without a boarding pass? And then there's the luggage . . .

That would be an advantage of using Onboard Airline Check-In... They handle that.

You mean on the ship? But what if your flight is a red eye and you get off the ship at 8am. Will they still do that???

As far as I know they will as long as your airline is a participating one. I've not seen any restrictions on flight times on the OAC specifics. I've never cruised DCL from the West Coast, so I have not had to deal with a red eye.

Unfortunately SD is expensive near the water. There is a Hilton walking distance with day rooms. San Diego airport doent have much room to sit past security. Maybe get a car rental and head to the beach or a park and relax. Try a picnic lunch?

I haven't been getting alerts for this thread so I'm sorry for the late reply. All of the USO lounges in my memory were before security. I sat in one at Reagan for a few hours last month while my daughter escorted a friend to her plane. Also because families are generally moving overseas they expect a lot of luggage. My girls are old enough to sit with it and we can take turns going out for a walk, bathroom, or food. I'm still going to look at on base rooms or a lounge as well.
