On-Board Booking Change

Anyone ever backed a cruise up, but then needed to change it again? Example, we booked a future cruise for May 2013, however we need to change to January 2013. If something happens and the date in January doesn’t work do we just loose the deposit (within 75 days) or can we change and reapply both?
