Reading about peoples meals is Tight! Sep 27-Oct 5th Completed

Joining in. Sorry to hear things haven't really been great for you all. Disney can certainly be hit or miss and for the prices you may that really shouldn't be the case. Glad you had a great meal at Shades though. We stayed there earlier this year and only ate at the Sports Bar, but the food prices were definitely welcomed over Disney!

I really don't mind the prices at WDW. Frankly I don't find them THAT out of line in comparison to places we eat in Seattle or Europe. Buuuuut, I do expect better quality/said service to justify the price, and frankly, Disney kind of let me down in that regard on this trip.

Up next, The Hollywood Brown Derby. Let me preface this by saying this was the BEST meal of the trip. Go figure. Of all my ADR's and places that I was looking forward to, I was not all that excited about the HBD. We had changed out days, but had no problems scoring an ADR, then on the day we were to eat there, changed it a little earlier. In fact, we got an ADR so close to when we wanted to eat, that it hadn't even hit their system in the restaurant yet. There was no issue and we were quickly escorted to our table.

Now, one of the things that didn't really resonate with me prior to was the theming. But I found it very warm and inviting inside. It certainly didn't hurt that they brought out the best bread rolls we would have on this trip and a really excellent butter to get things rolling.

448256

448257

Sooooo good. We are still talking about this four weeks later.

Now, because we were gorging ourselves on dinner rolls. we opted not to order appetizers. But since it was my birthday and because I had been meaning to try one the entire trip, I ordered a Gin Mule. Nolet’s Silver Dry Gin, Fever Tree Ginger Beer with fresh Lime Juice and Mint Leaves

Woah this was strong.

I am not really a mixed drink guy, and was expecting more of a traditional Mule, but this had quite a lot of Gin, and was pretty enjoyable. Though they were VERY generous with the Gin and that was most of the flavor I got.

448259

Up next, I for whatever reason ordered the Charred Pork Chop: Chorizo and Mango-stuffed Pork Chop, Tri-color Cauliflower, Cipollini Onion, Boniato Hash, Sweet-and-Sour Sauce. I had gone with the intention of having the Fillet or the Cioppino, but somehow discarded that idea and went with the pork chop. Maybe it was all that gin?

448261

I was offered hot sauce and on reflection it probably would have been a nice enhancer, but I LOVED this either way. For the second time I was having a dish that included chorizo which I have never really liked and for the second time, I was enjoying it. This was really a nice dish, and it was quite a large portion. I would definitely order this again.

My DW went with the Filet Mignon. Char-grilled Angus Filet saffron potato mash, buttered asparagus, green peppercorn reduction, sun-dried tomato ketchup.

448264

AAAAAAMAZING!

This was everything a signature restaurant level dish should be. The Filet was quite a large size too. Cooked perfectly, fork tender, everything about this was sheer perfection! I would like to be able to agree, but my greedy DW would not give me a bite, nor did she want to sample mine. She was not going to waste any stomach space on anything else.

Not to be outdone, my DD got what was the BEST kids meal of the entire trip. Grilled Beef Filet, Baked Potato Chips, Seasonal Vegetables.

448265

Does that steak look small to you?

Ok, we were on the verge of complaining about the steak, We both tried a teeeny tiny bite, and, frankly, it was AMAZING. It was every bit as good as our mains. So, because it was such a perfect piece of meat (no fat), it was just the right size. But had it not been a good piece of meat, we would have questioned this. As it was, my daughter was making num num noises the entire meal. Those homemade baked potato chips were outstanding as well.

Now, once again we didn't realize the kids meal thing is one side and a dessert. Our waiter explained that (for the first time on the trip) but informed us he would be bringing her a dessert anyway. The service was almost perfect, they lose a half a point because there were a couple of long pauses when he would be storytelling at another table when we needed something, bit it was otherwise excellent. Also, given we were not on a dining plan, I am not sure what it matters, but I did figure out finally that this is how the kids meals work.

I will pick up dessert in part 2.

Now, our waiter Daniel, on this culinary journey of delights did inform me that I would be getting something or other since it was my Birthday. Not wanting to chance filling up on a dessert that they would otherwise give away, I chose to order what I expected my DW to order, who completely shocked me by ordering something else. It was at that moment I went with the Chocolate Mousse Cake: Dark Chocolate Sponge Cake, Dark Chocolate Mousse, Chocolate Sauce, Amarena Black Cherries.

448266

Soooooo darn good!

In fact, in general, our desserts were so good the entire trip, it fooled my DW into thinking all restaurants do wonderful desserts, and she has ordered a couple of real stinkers since we have been back. That practice has now ceased.

For my Birthday dessert, they also brought me a smaller slice of their famous Grapefruit Cake.

448267

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this, so I was happy for the chance to try it. It was really good. I loved it. Not as much as my other dessert, but it was great in it's own right. Now I had bragging rights with my DD for her not being the only one to get two desserts! I would give my chocolate dessert an A+ but this was a solid A. My DW did not care for it all that much though, but she loved my chocolate. However she was in love with her dessert.

Espresso Cheesecake Espresso Chocolate Cheesecake, Chocolate Cream, Caramel-Banana Sauce, Espresso Macaron, Hazelnut Powder, Milk Chocolate Twig

448269

Fan fudging tastic!

I was granted a bite of this, and you really tasted the Espresso. It might have even been better than mine, which would make it an A++, and frankly, that is just ridiculous for grading purposes, so lets go with 'just as good as mine'. Besides, she only got the one great dessert whereas I got two :)

Now, given we are from the Seattle area, we HAD to order coffee. It's kinda our thing. We put it in IV's for hospital patients, use it to put on wounds, as a solvent, and also drink buckets of it. The fact we never see the sun out here is probably the reason for that. They had a fancy shmancy pressed pot here as well. The Alto Mayo Protected Forrest Coffee

448285

WOWZERS!

448296

Fan Coffee Tastic!

It was just the perfect coffee to pair up with dessert. Also, it was nutty and creamy all on it's own. Best pressed pot of the trip, to go along with the best bread, best mains and best dessert!

My DD had a homemade chocolate chip cookie with homemade vanilla bean ice cream. I don't see this anywhere on any menu, so I will take our waiters word for it. Though it was marked down on the receipt as Hidden Treasure, so maybe that is in fact what it was.

448297

I did try a taste of her ice cream and it was delicious. I don't recall my DD saying much other than pleasurable food noises this meal, while cleaning her plates, something we struggle with getting her to do. She was waving two thumbs up post meal.

This was truly an EXCELLENT meal. We really do enjoy fine dining, and have had the good fortune to eat at some michelin star restaurants in Europe. This meal ranked up there, and is certainly one of the top meals I have ever eaten in the U.S. It was so good, we very nearly made a return trip to H.S just to eat here again. In fact, in a future trip, I just may book it twice!

As far as birthday meals go, this replaced Storybook at Artist Point, but instead of it being a let down, it shocked me with just how great it was.

So for food, atmosphere and service, we give our early dinner at The Hollywood Brown Derby (9.5/10). There were a couple of pauses in the service, otherwise it would have been perfect, but it would get my highest recommendation, and I can not wait to go back again!

We are still talking lovingly about this meal BTW, so to say it was a hit would be underselling it. We left having spent $155, plus tip. I think that was extremely fair, and given I had a mixed drink and we had coffee, I would do it again and again if I could.

Really enjoying your reviews. I understand what you mean; I have no trouble spending money on a great meal, but when the quality and/or service wasn't great it frustrating. Your meal at the Brown Derby looks great! We haven't been there since around 2012 so I think we need to go back! And it's not that it wasn't good when we went, but we like to try mostly new restaurants on our trips.

I'm really enjoying your reviews. I've never actually read a Trip Report before but your Dining Report is so entertaining that I'm also following your Trip Report. I just added Brown Derby Fantasmic package to our plans for May and I was eager to hear what you thought about it. I have a 23 year old son who appreciates fine dining so I'm glad it was such a great meal for you. Guess I'm keeping that on my list...now lunch at BOG...guess I'll have to see what your thoughts are about that.

Thank you for the kind words. Oddly, I have now eaten at every sit down in HS except for Mama Melrose. I didn't set out to conquer that parks restaurants! Iike to try new places too, the only repeat that we kept was Raglan Road, but I had only been to dinner, so Brunch was a new experience. It was just a great meal, I highly recommend it!

Thank you! Originally I had it booked as the Fantasmic package, but that was a casualty of moving our days as it was not available. They did seem to have a better reserved section for Fantasmic than we did with the FP. Much more centered. I'll give you a little preview of BOG lunch....Avoid!!!

The triumph of the previous days meals would unfortunately take a mighty downturn. What was on the agenda? Breakfast at the Shades of Green Garden Grill followed up with lunch at Be Our Guest and dinner at Narcoossees.

Breakfast started off without issue.

Once again we got the allergy friendly waffle.

448552

Some days it was a big Mickey Waffle, others it was a plate sized normal waffle. Today was the normal version. My DW told me she preferred it like this as it was crunchier.

Today they had ham! It was really good. I was shamed into only having the one plate today.

448554

I did have some yummy fruit though. Why is the fruit and Veg sooooo good down here?

448555

In all it was again another great breakfast, although I was a little bit sad we had canceled the Crystal Palace breakfast, but there was NO CHANCE I could have gotten my family there by 830am. We barely made it on time for our second scheduled FP as it was.

In all, Garden Grill stayed a quality way to start each morning. I highly recommend them if staying or visiting Shades of Green.

Things would get worse though, much worse. Up next, Be Our Guest lunch.

We were in desperate need of escaping the heat of the day when it was time for lunch at Be Our Guest. I had made some calculated guesses, mostly on the thinking that we would have eaten at Crystal Palace, but in any event, I had ordered ahead. This would be the one smart food choice I made the rest of the day. We bypassed a HUGE line on the bridge but still had a pretty long wait once inside. The place was in sheer chaos. It looked like a High School cafeteria during lunch hour. It was noisy, packed, and everything was in disarray. We eventually made our way over to the Rose room, and stood near a table that had just been destroyed. In fact, they all had. Everything was a mess.

Eventually they came over and bussed the table. I had to go hunt down napkins to make a passing attempt at cleaning it. My DD was impressed with the room, it was pretty neat, but the annoyance was already building with myself and my DW.

Then we waited.

and we waited.

and we waited.

and we waited.

A solid half hour had passed when our food trolley arrived. Let me preface this by saying absolutely NOTHING arrived hot.

I had ordered my wife the Spring Chicken Salad: Sliced Golden Beets, Roasted Peppers, Chilled Green Beans, Pickled Shallots, Carrots, and Herb Vinaigrette served with Thyme-Scented Chicken.

That description gives the false impression that it is a chicken and veg dish, when in reality it is just a salad with the tiniest most pathetic piece of chicken that you can imagine.

448558

The photo probably makes it look larger than it was. For comparison, it's about the size of the salad dressing cup which was not that large.

What was comically large in comparison was the side of Green Beans that they would bring.

448559
Eat up, buttercup!

My DW immediately asked if that was for an adult? The person bringing the food had to agree it was a tiny portion. She asked if she could bring something else. We then asked for a braised chicken. What we should have asked for was the nearest exit. But they did try and make it right by putting in an order of braised chicken that would show itself about 25 minutes later. coq au vin style in red wine with bacon, mushrooms, roasted asparagus, blistered heirloom tomatoes and braised leeks served with mashed potatoes

I had also ordered the table a side of fries, which were cold and pretty awful.

I had ordered my DD the Feast ala Beast which is just the braised chicken with MORE green beans and MORE cold fries. It was also supposed to come with a bottle of water that I only realized later we never got.

448562
That was terrible. The chicken was cold and rock hard, as if it was made from leftover chicken from the day before. The sauce tasted like a bland tomato sauce. I had to blink three times to make sure we were not in Tonys.

My DW portion would be much larger, but she stated the chicken tasted like it had been boiled, and part of it was still pink. Also, there was very little sauce on hers. The mashed potatoes tasted like straight butter. Needless to say, very little of this was consumed.

448564

In fact, almost none of our food was edible.

I scored the one halfway decent dish, the French Onion Soup.

448565

This strangely tasted of alcohol. I ate it, mostly because what the heck else was I going to eat at that point. Plus I had all that time to kill while we waited for my DW second dish. I should add, since she wasn't eating the salad they first brought, I tried it a bit. The salad itself tasted of dirt. I frankly have no idea what was going on in that kitchen, but I have never experienced anything like it.

The ONLY decent thing that made it to our table was 'The Gray Stuff'. Oddly, I had read bad reviews about that. It was the only thing that me and my DD enjoyed. My DW was done with the place at that point.

448567

Ok, the dishes got this one right.

When I surveyed our table at the end of our almost two hour Be Our Guest QS lunch adventure, all I could do was shake my head at the waste and throw in the towel that we had just had a worst meal than Kona Cafe.

448569

As you can see, two uneaten mains, with a message spelled out in the little bit of sauce that arrived, a basically untouched kids meal, and leftover cold fries and half a pile of Green Beans. The only thing finished was my soup. At this point I realized we still had the cupcake.

What a horrid meal.

I do give them slight credit for trying to make it better by bringing a different main, unfortunately it was awful. Only the one little cupcake was good. I ate the soup. But that was just a pathetic effort all the way around.

So for food, service and atmosphere I give our lunch at Be Our Guest (2.5/10). Basically one point for the atmosphere and one for the service attempt. Obviously leaving a table full of food doesn't earn any restaurant much credit, but a half a point for the gray stuff.

Unfortunately this day would find a way to get worse! Up next, our Narcoossees misadventure!

Having had two splendid Signature meals up to this point, I figured why not go for the Trifecta. So I had thrown away our 8pm O'hana reservation when an 8pm Narcoossees opened up. I figured fine dining plus fireworks, what a splendid way to spend the evening!

So we cleaned up and took a Lyft to the GF. We were highly impressed with the resort. Eventually we found our way out past the pool to the restaurant, and were ready to be impressed. Given our terrible lunch, it had a pretty low bar to clear. Eventually we were shown to our seats, and I mistakenly thought, wow, what a great view for the fireworks later!

448580

This should be perfect! Or so I thought...

They start you out with a complimentary sourdough bread. Now, the only thing that is almost as popular out here in the PNW as coffee is sourdough bread. It even beats out flannel, depressing music, weed, and people that don't believe in using deodorants. Yes, it's THAT popular.

448634

This was terrible. It was stale, and dried out. The only aspect of it that was unique was it's ability to leave crumbs all over the table. The butter was also rather bland and it did not improve the bread. Well, we weren't here for the complimentary bread anyway, but I was already getting a bad feeling about the restaurant. Maybe it was just indigestion from lunch?

I decided after debating between another mule and a beer to try a beer I had never had before. I was a little stunned when she just plopped a can of beer and a glass in front of me with a bit of a pffft noise. Apparently my beer choice was met with disdain.

448633

After I had poured and staged it.

I really don't care for IPA's, but this was alright. Had a lot of citrus hints to it.

Given how much we loved the Calamari at Shades of Green, we decided to order that as an App here. Crispy Rhode Island Calamari Peppadew-Banana Pepper-Olive Relish and Tomato Coulis.

448585
So. Much. Breading.

It was the wrong kind of breading too. It tasted like a chicken tender breading. You could only taste peppers and breading. We wound up not eating a lot of this. My apprehension was rising. We opted to set this to the side as we didn't want to fill up on disappointing chicken tender errr calamari. I should also note the table was more or less covered in bread crumbs, and while other tables got theirs cleaned off, ours was ignored.

For my Main I ordered Wild Key West Shrimp and Campanella pasta: savoy spinach, oven-roasted tomatoes, basil pistou, comte cheese, and chardonnay-garlic cream.

I need to add, I do not have the before picture on this, as it did not come out. What I am posting is what I did not finish. This is how much food was left, SWIMMING in soup. It was sour, it was soaked, it was soggy, it was terrible. There were only three shrimp in this dish too, which I ate, and after a couple of bites of pasta, I was already not feeling well.

448623

Is that supposed to be a soup?

It was, frankly, a bad joke. As soon as it came my DW asked me if the pasta was al dente, because she thought it looked horrid. No, it was nowhere close to al dente. It was beyond mushy. Worst thing I put in my mouth the entire trip.

My DW ordered Scottish Salmon: Succotash of Summer Corn and Hominy, Creamy Corn Purée, Piccalilli Relish, and Andouille Sausage.

448624

Looks like it has a nice char right?

Except that wasn't a char at all. Despite there being no mention of it being spicey, that fish was covered in a spicy salt with paprika and other seasonings. My DW mouth was on fire. It was also cold. WTH with the cold food today? Worse, all of the accompaniments tasted...raw. The hominy was cold and hard, as if it had been dumped out of a can right onto the plate. I tried this as well and it did not taste as if it had been cooked.

448629

This is what was going back to the kitchen. At a signature restaurant. You can also see the uneaten calamari.

My DD ordered the Oven-roasted Wild Shrimp with potato puffs.

448627

First, that IS NOT a potato puff. It is a tater tot. A cold, soaked in oil, disgusting tater tot (I happen to like tot's, these were just baaaaad). Also, a couple of those shrimp had not even be de-veined. Sure looks like an $18 dish to me. She wouldn't touch the tater tots, I had one myself and could not believe that is what they were serving. Yuck.

She wouldn't finish her plate either.

They took the relatively full plates without comment. Given our conversation had been about just how bad our food was, the table behind us started making fun of us to the waitress about how we must just be trying to get a free meal, and how they have never had a bad meal here. It was bad enough they were making the comments, but the waitress just laughed it up with them. I was rather incensed at that point. Despite the lousy culinary day though, I was still trying to enjoy myself.

Ok, lets enjoy those fireworks!

448630
You have got to be kidding me!

Yes, as you approached the time for fireworks, people just start lining up outside the restaurant, so instead of getting to see them with your meal, you get to see peoples backside.

I was a bit beside myself at this point. The waitress who had been avoiding our table popped back by eventually and asked me if I wanted anything else. I informed her I didn't want anything else from their kitchen that night, but would like to speak to someone about our experience. At that point, My DW said she was still hungry and asked for a dessert menu. When she came back with the menu, she finally cleared the bread crumbs off from the start of the meal, and my DW ordered the Narcoossee's Candy Bar Dark chocolate-mocha bar with house-made guanaja chocolate gelato. My DD ordered the chocolate brownie. Both desserts were ok. I was past the picture taking point at that point of the evening.

The waitress went back to the table behind us and they continued to make snide comments.

A solid 20 minutes after my DW and DD had finished, she brought the check and said the manager was still busy. I found what amounted to nearly exact change, left that in the bill, and we left.

I did complain to Disney about this. No I did not want anything. We were not angling for anything except an enjoyable meal which we did not get. The entire day had been a bust, and the meals had been awful. What a huge disappointment Narcoossees turned out to be.

In looking back, I don't understand why nobody ever bothered to check on our satisfaction with the meal the entire time. It should be a given that if full plates are coming back to the kitchen, you at least enquire about it, especially at a signature restaurant. Also, I should have demanded to speak with a manager earlier. I did feel a bit shamed by the comments from the nearby table is the only reason that I did not escalate it earlier.

At a certain point though, this evening was probably beyond saving. They made it abundantly clear they did not care about our experience, and at best we received dismissive service.

I hope this does not come off as an over reaction. I waited to write this up, because I did not want emotion to factor in.

So for food, service and atmosphere, I give our signature dinner at Narcoossees a (1/10). 1 point for the desserts. Which I am told were ok.

This was BY FAR, the worst meal of the trip.

It was one of the worst meals I have ever had the misfortune of having out. I can't say enough negative things about his experience, so I will end it there.

Up next, Lunch at Sanaa!

I’ve been lurking both of your reports. I am absolutely beyond words at your family’s experience here. Your dish looks horrible, and being treated that way is utterly rude. I don’t even want to think of how my DH would have reacted to the table behind you and server. I hope Disney takes your complaint seriously. After seeing your photos we will not be trying Natcoossee’s.

There is someone else who ate at Narcoossees the same week we were there and ordered the same dish. I just checked in on their DR here the other day. The dish looked completely different from what I was served. I mean, not even close.

I do think Disney took my response seriously. I sent them those photos and they were very apologetic. But it took some doing to get someone who would actually look at them and not give me a brush of response. I wasn't looking for a refund or a gift card, I wanted them to view our experience. I wound up including the BOG pictures from the same day.

By the time we finished it was quite late. I am not one to usually complain or ask for a manager, I can probably count on one hand the number of times I have done that in my life and still have fingers leftover, but this was beyond the pale bad.

In fact, it changed everything about what we would do the next day as well. We were supposed to go to a High Tea at the GF, but had no desire to return to the resort, and then we were going to go to the Flying Fish, but we just didn't want to risk another disappointment.

Just curious what date you were at BOG? Was it a crazy busy day or would these crowds and this experience be typical regardless of the crowds? I'd be interested to see what the actual crowd level was like on that particular day...I was first thinking of breakfast at BOG but $28 for a plate of eggs seems excessive so was thinking of lunch but now that doesn't seem wise either.. I just want to see inside the castle in reality...

Honestly I didn't think the crowds were very heavy the entire trip, but, then we rarely did anything that we didn't have a FP for. We ate here on October 2nd. I probably should edit my thread title with my dates (Sept 27-Oct-5).

The problem is, they are taking WAY too many reservations for this place. It wont matter if its a low crowd day because the restaurant will still be booked solid. Id say, go for lunch but just order a couple of cupcakes, have a look around, then leave.

Oooh I love that suggestion...cupcakes it is!

I feel like you could have refused to pay the bill based on the fact that you did not receive what you ordred. At least I wonder if the Manager would be free at that point. Too few people will not complain about inedible meals at Disney. Until my last trip in 2016 I was a staunch supporter of DisneyWorld food. I won't pay for or eat cold food. Food that is cooked differently than I am expecting, well, if I can eat it I will. And pay my bill, of course. If more people refused bad food it would improve. There is nothing you can do about bad service short of letting the manager know and not going back. Thank you for contacting Disney about your day. Love your honest report.

My family seconds your BOG experience.

We tried some time ago for lunch, it was meh, but got us inside. Last summer it made my DD 17 short list & she wanted to try dinner. We shared 2 apps between the 4 of us & when 4 entrees were set before us they were the tiniest of portions. I looked at our group & said 'we'll get snacks later guys' which was ridiculous for what we'd paid but I didn't want a panic riot to ensue. Everybody stay calm, Mom will get you food. We're done with BOG.

Did the table making comments just see the full plates of food and start making assumptions? What a wild thing to do. Not sure I’ve ever paid attention to what someone is or isn’t eating at a table next to me. Let alone assume their actions, unless they’re loudly proclaiming it, mean they want a free meal. How odd.

I actually do think the manager may have been tied up trying to close out the day. I should have asked immediately, but I also expected someone to step in and check on us at some point which never happened. Frankly, the entire thing unfolded in such an unexpected way that it was hard to believe it was happening.

I think that the mistake is thinking because an ADR is hard to get, that the food will be decent. BOG was a totally money grab, and they are not even trying to hide that fact.

We were sitting awfully close and they were right behind our table. It started when the waitress asked about our barely touched calamari, the only time she asked about anything on our table. We stated we found it overbreaded to which the ‘ladies’ at the table behind chimed in loudly, “look who’s trying to get a free meal out of Disney.” It didn’t end there. I got the impression from the numerous comments they were regulars. Also, probably half drunk. But still. I was about to say something and my DW stopped me. It just added to the lousy night.
