Please explain what the Rule of Four means.

Does it apply to holding points?

Does it apply to the DVC resorts?
TIA

Q.
What is the Rule of Four?
A.
The Rule of Four guideline is that you cannot book and travel on the Disney Collection (excluding hotels at Disneyland Resort in California and Tokyo Disney Resort) and Concierge Collection vacations within the last 4 months of your Use Year.

However, you can travel in the last 4 months of your Use Year as long as you've booked your stay more than 4 months before the end of your Use Year.

It does not apply to holding points - they can be used in the last 4 months of your UY so long as you can find availability 2 months out or less.

It does not apply to DVC resorts.

When you trade out of the DVC system - for a cruise or stay at the Art of Animation resort, for example - DVC needs cash to pay the Disney Cruise or Resorts division so that they can pay cash for your cruise or stay. The rule of 4 says that you can't hand them points that are about to expire (at the end of your UY) and trade for a cruise when they would not have enough lead time to be able turn the points into cash.

Just means if you want to stay at a non DVC resort or take a cruise during the last four months of your use year, you must make the reservation before the last 4 months of your use year. For example, if you have a February use year and want to stay at POFQ in December, you must make the reservation on or before September 30.

Doesn't apply to DVC resorts.

Rule would apply even if you use holding points to pay for your non-dvc stay. If course, holding points have other restrictions, also.

There also is no reason for this rule to exist in its current form. I could see the rule of one where they might limit you to the last month or so, but who thinks that Disney will have any trouble at all renting out any room that’s available when there are two, three or four months left?

No one here has any data to support or refute that opinion.

Of course there's a reason for the rule to exist in its current form. DVC wants it this way. We aren't privy to the reasoning behind every decision. If they didn't, they would remove it. Until such a time, it is what it is. Just because some of the Members may not like it, doesn't mean there isn't a reason for it.
