Things to do as a family in LA

We are spending 6 days in LA in April as part of our road trip.

I've not really got a lot of activities planned... A day at the beach, possibly the motor museum and a hike at Griffith Observatory.

What would you recommend to a family with young children?

Thanks :)

Exposition Park. Mostly the California Science Center, which has the Space Shuttle Endeavour. The museum is free other than a small reservation fee for getting Space Shuttle tickets. If you pay for an IMAX movie the Space Shuttle is included. They also have a diverse museum with aerospace, natural world, and technology exhibits. It has a small aquarium that includes a kelp forest exhibit. There are other parts of the park such as the LA Memorial Coliseum (with the Olympic flame) and the rose garden. There are other museums on the site too but I don't remember the name of the top of my head.

Just a follow-up about Exposition Park.....

It's got more than just the 3 things I said. It has the 1984 Olympic swim stadium, the Los Angeles Sports Arena, the California African American Museum, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, and the Rose Garden. They're also building a new stadium for their 2nd MLS soccer team. It's across the street from the University of Southern California.

And here's the California Science Center:

I agree on Exposition Park, my kids could spend all day at the CA Science Center and love the Natural History Museum as well (especially the dinosaurs). For young kids other great museums are Kidspace in Pasadena or the Skirball Center, which has an amazing giant Noah's Ark.

You could combine Griffith Park Observatory with the La Brea Tarpits. They have a nice tour of the tarpits, and a working pit with an observation deck. The Page Museum behind the tar pits is also interesting.

There is a nice little walk/hike to a waterfall in Solstice Canyon (Malibu area) that you could easily do with young kids.

You can do a Long Beach Aquarium/Ocean whale watching day http://www.daveyslocker.com/whale-watching/los-angeles/, or go down to Dana Point and do one of the Captain Dave excursions to see dolphins and/or whales, http://www.dolphinsafari.com/
