Woohoo!

Joining in to read all about it. Exhausting flight but at least you are there!
Yes! I forget how a full day of flying can really take it out of you.

Thank you! It's a fun way to remember.

First Evening in Barcelona

We limited ourselves to about an hour nap. It was hard to wake up, but we all felt better after a little rest.

It was still too early for dinner, but DD needed a snack. Our host had left us a great list of things in the neighborhood, so we headed around the corner for a gelato.

914745F1-7D14-4E5D-82E1-5E5D4431BDEE.jpeg

Then all took time to shower and change. Our neighborhood list also included a few restaurants. We decided it made sense to have tapas for our first night.

B05B62D1-9C47-452A-83A8-D18534CAE148.jpeg

We pretty.much let our server order for us. It was a good choice because everything was great.

Best sangria ever.

Fanta Limon in a fancy glass. Europeans appear to have no use for kiddie cups.

For dinner we had a couple types of fish, some potatoes, and tomato bread. I didn't take very good pictures tonight.

The server recommended churros for dessert.

They were a HUGE hit. DD had never had them before!

Then we decided to take a bit of a walk before heading home for the night.

I always kind of wanted to eat at one of those cafes on the median of the road, but we had such good food at less fussy places that we never went.

More Barcelona to come.

Winding Down in Barcelona

As we finished our walk, we passed a pastry place recommend by our host. Side Note - Tonight DD was really shocked by the fact that we were walking everywhere. She was better about it for the rest of the trip, but tonight, the culture shock and the tiredness combined to create some whining.

This turned in to a beautiful photo op. (If you are reading the TR by @anricat you've seen this bakery before. Lol)

Everything was so beautiful! The woman behind the counter was very nice and recommended a cake for DD. So we boxed it up and took it home. The price was very reasonable: 4€

Alas, we were too tired to eat it tonight so we put it in the fridge and went to bed. It was around 9:00 Barcelona time but we were all completely wiped out.

Next up - Gaudi day in Barcelona

Day 2 - Sagrada Familia

Everyone slept well except me. I was up around 2:00 for about an hour. Ah time changes.

We all got up around 8:00 to get ready for our half day tour. We booked with Real Barcelona Tours based on their solid reviews of being kid friendly and how adaptable they were in terms of itenerary. We also didn't want a full day thing since we knew there were LOTS of things we wanted to see in Barcelona.
https://realbarcelonatours.com/

We had purchased eggs, fruit, and bread at the store the day before so we had that for breakfast. We weren't sure how long the walk really was to Sagrada Familia, so we took a taxi. We were dropped off by the Easter facade so we walked around to the Christmas side where we were meeting our guide. We also met up with the daughter of some of my parents' friends who happened to be in town and wanted to see some of the sites.

This was my first view of the church. Absolutely amazing.

Since we were so early, we got to walk around and get some good pictures.

Christmas facade.

My dad, the college student, and I also went to the park across from the Christmas facade to get a picture. I know it looks like a backdrop, but we were really there!

Then we met up with our guide, Romina, by the gift shop. Oh yeah, we also cleaned my mom's purse. DD put her bottle of Fanta Limon in there but hadn't closed it all the way. Big mess, but nothing was ruined.

We first stopped and looked at the model of what the church would look like when finished. The gray plastic is finished and the yellow still needs to be completed. They are hoping to finish in 8 years which will be 100 years after work began.

F8418000-3410-412E-B314-4BE129A8AE7B.jpeg
We stopped and admired the Christmas facade for a while. This was the side that Gaudi actually worked on. Our guide had DD do lots of scavenger hunt for things on the building while she was telling us all the history.

BF5447EE-7A2E-4D46-94DB-BE1EE562DD22.jpeg
The doors were a big hit and this butterfly was DD's favorite bug. Make sure you look at the turtles by the door. The sea turtle is closer to the water and the land turtle is closer to town. Such amazing detail!

8F4765B6-F6B3-428A-8DD7-907911805BB6.jpeg

The inside was equally amazing.

0CB7D130-ACE8-480C-9E45-FF17FAAA6F73.jpeg
Our guide also told us the story of St George and the dragon. She actually read DD an illustrated children's book in Catalan.

Then we went outside to look at the Easter facade. This was done by another artist (I forget the name,) and Jesus is naked! It's the only time Jesus had been portayed naked and there were lots of protests at first.

12BE6F41-E378-421F-BCFB-2F110EFCC274.jpeg

We also looked at the school that Gaudi had built for the children of the workers on the church. He seemed like a guy way ahead of his time.

FFF7A92E-14F0-4C97-BEBD-DF07E154A718.jpeg

When we left Sagrada Familia the crowds had gotten HUGE! We made sure we had control of our bags and phones then we headed to the Metro station on our way to Casa Battló.

Next up - Dragons!

This turned in to a beautiful photo op. (If you are reading the TR by @anricat you've seen this bakery before. Lol)

Yay, you took a picture of the one I got. I had the Xoco Taronja and it was SOOO good. One of my favorite desserts from the trip for sure.

I love that you call it the Christmas facade and Easter facade. Cracking me up over here! :) Sounds like your tour was good. We didn't do a tour (just the audio guide) but it sounds like we would have gotten more out of the tour. I didn't know about the naked thing, but on a related note, we got home and I was going through our photos (mostly from Rome) and DD said, "What was with all the status of naked men everywhere?!?!"

Joining in! So far your trip looks like lots of fun! How lucky for your daughter to go to Europe at such a young age. I wish my parents had taken me there more often. I love going to Europe.

b1bc9ece-3b30-46a5-a285-fa22f2d76dfd-jpeg.335010

This was my first view of the church. Absolutely amazing.
I did a Mediterranean cruise a few years ago that left from Barcelona. This church is really amazing with the unique architecture.

Day 2 - Casa Batlló

After Sagrada Familia, Romina walked us over to the Metro station. We coukd have done the walk, but then we wouldn't have had as much time at the site. It was also nice to have her show us how to use the Metro.

Pro tip - the T10 cards can be shared between people. I didn't realize this during my research, so I thought we'd need to buy 4 cards. In fact, we could all share AND DD gets to ride for free. I'm not sure what the exact age cutoff is, but our guide said school aged. Just make sure you keep your small person close as you walk through the gate.

It was only 2 stops between Sagrada Familia and our stop. DD loves riding the Metro whenever we get a chance so she was very happy.

When we got off the train, we were by Casa Milá. We didn't go in, but we got to see it from the outside. Locals were not happy when this building was made as they felt it was not attractive. In fact, they called it the rock quarry.

8DCDC3C6-992B-4CDA-A9B4-3D4A378425C0.jpeg

6060A25F-DA06-4CB0-81D7-5270230123FA.jpeg

If you're ever in this area, be sure you look at the sidewalks. Gaudi even made the sidewalk attractive!

Pro tip - As we got off the train, our guide gave us some invaluable advice about navigating Barcelona. When you're looking at the map, always figure out where the sea is. Everywhere you are in the city, they will be a slope. The sea is always downhill. So that will let you orient yourself on your map.

We then walked to Casa Battló. We had skip the line tickets but DD was getting hungry. Romina knew we could still get in after a snack, so we went to the chocolate ship next door. Chocolate Amatller is over 200 years old and famous in Barcelona. Even though it's in a touristy area, it's really good, reasonably priced, and authentic to the area.

Hot chocolate and bread. Yum!

They're coffee bar had a cute drawing. Each coffee was served with a little dark chocolate leaf.

FF2D120C-A0A7-40D7-85FA-8FBFD5CCAC2A.jpeg

We then walked next door to casa Battló. This house was inspired by one of the patron Saints of Barcelona: Saint George. He's the one who slayed the dragon.

14B7D46C-6302-4EB5-A80A-A1475BB41A65.jpeg

Once in the house, Romina got an iPad to use with our tour. Gaudi was inspired by nature in all of his designs. Well, this iPad not only showed us what the student areas looked like when people lived in this house, it also showed the nature connections to the design. It was really cool!

D6CABE30-EC44-4EEB-B4F4-98798D3D3D63.jpeg

46762B7D-29F8-4C4E-8C45-FE4BFECA6928.jpeg

These two pictures are the center of the house. The tiles are light at the bottom and dark at the top so that natural light is maximized. There are also window to the cereal opening so that all rooms have natural light. Considering my office doesn't have widows, this is very appealing to me.

The storage cubboards have butterfly wings for doors.

423BA043-4000-448B-9688-4942C46BA8AB.jpeg

The back of the building had an amazing terrace and even the back is filled and beautiful. Clearly not everyone decorates the back of the buildings!

19936E1B-045A-4CE2-B702-601688C30CAC.jpeg
We went all the way to the roof. In the front hump, there's a party room that DD loved. You can also see how the roof looks like dragon scales. I am so glad we stopped here.

At this point, we said goodbye to Romina and walked back to the condo.

I want to mention that, in preparing for this trip, we taught DD a bit about Gaudi. This book was amazing for that and it was great for her to see things she read about come to life! If you're taking a younger kid, I highly recommend this book.

Next up - Afternoon and evening #2 in Barcelona

There are no words, that church.....cathedral....work of art!....is.....stunning!!!!!!!!

Oh and so is the food apparently! YUM!

Afternoon and Evening

After we left Casa Batlló, we all walked back to the condo for lunch. There was a great bakery around the corner from our place that had sandwiches. We picked up several and shared them all.

Our friend headed back to her hostel and we decided to take a short nap.

Funny story - The student we met up with just graduated from Amherst. One of my former students also just graduated from Amherst. Turned out that my student was arriving in Barcelona that night. THEN it turned out that the two knew each other! So they actually made plans to hang out that night. What a small world.

Ok, so we decided to nap. I probably slept for about an hour. When I woke up I worked on editing photos and read my book. After almost 3 hours we woke up DD! She was tired.

We decided to try another tapas place on our host's list for dinner: La Flauta.

6E9C41A3-D99A-47E1-B598-AFBDE5437181.jpeg

The menu was very similar but the cover was awesome.

909FE094-8F30-43EB-A0ED-99B948C17A05.jpeg

We had the cod again.

32D539E1-18E9-422F-95AC-AE0A18748210.jpeg

I know that cod with aioli, honey, and tomatoes sounds strange, but it was so amazing!

Our server recommended this squid dish.

5A0F214F-276A-4C4B-BB0C-5A07C9982752.jpeg

This was absolutely incredible! Toasted bread with olive oil, grilled squid, and fresh squid ink. Seriously, it was a perfect bite.

Of course there were churros for dessert.

8887FA49-D818-4DFF-908C-C44616DCB38B.jpeg

Overall this food was just as good but the prices were a bit higher so we agreed that we preferred Vinitus.

Then it was back to the condo and to bed. DD fell right asleep so I know she was still catching up on sleep. I went to bed around 10.

Next up - Another day in Barcelona

Las Ramblas and Boqueria

We had already decided to have a slow start today and head to the Las Ramblas and Boqueria. However, DD took it to a new level. We ended up walking her up after a 13 hour sleep!!!

I was the first one up and I quickly mastered the coffee maker. I really liked the Nespresso maker. It was much better than the Keurig coffee we get at home. Maybe that's vacation talking.

5FB6AF6E-13F8-4DFF-96B9-13541BE761FF.jpeg

Once she woke up, she spent some time watching the dogs at the dog park. This became one of her favorite passtimes when we were home.

332AE3F7-D763-431A-9FDF-B7DFF3852779.jpeg

These beautiful purple flowers were all over the city.

0DE8DDED-F72D-4ABA-9AE0-6BAAD1BF6848.jpeg

We had another breakfast of scrambled eggs, fruit, and fresh bread. Delicious. Then we set out walking to the market. Because we knew the downhill to the sea trick, navigating was really easy.

Barcelona really is a beautiful city.

It was so hard to pick treats!

DEAD96AF-9D48-48FE-A583-204854B122E7.jpeg

DD had a juice.

D14BA002-E8B5-46EB-8491-25D2191A257D.jpeg

I had an oyster. I loved that they would shuck them and had stuff to enjoy it right there!

Then we shopped for dinner.

8E9999CD-1582-4932-BE7C-40D84AEAA12F.jpeg

Unfortunately we didn't feel up to cooking the beautiful fresh seafood. We ended up purchasing fruit, tomatoes, a couple cheeses, local ham, and fresh bread. We were set!

We took the metro back to the condo to return all of our groceries. Again, super easy. And we saw this cool sculpture as we walked.

AE6993A4-9552-4A0D-AECA-0CAC7B912737.jpeg

Next up - Paella and chocolate

Paella and Chocolate

After dropping our groceries at the condo, we headed to Vinitus again for lunch. We had learned that paella was pretty much only available at lunch time so we made sure to have a couple lunches out.

74DCDD7A-9C4A-4559-9B60-ABB2BD9A028A.jpeg
Today's special was lobster paella. Yum!

6E7E7626-9280-4E40-8C7F-68192AA4BFAB.jpeg
We also had sangria and my mom was a bit distressed that I didn't fill her glass quickly enough. Haha!

We then headed back for a little nap.

Side note - I have no idea how people have a drink with lunch. It makes me so sleepy!

We decided to head to the chocolate museum for our afternoon activity and we took the metro.

http://museuxocolata.cat/mobile/

B8D9F06A-0BB0-406D-837F-F5B3B5A2AFC5.jpeg The station was so pretty!

To get to the museum, we got to walk past the Arc de Triumph.

3E613485-FD23-4899-8328-30D3D5B5F6E1.jpeg
In the park we saw more parrots. While she was dog and bird watching, DD had seen a parrot and we learned that there are multiple types of parrots that are native to Barcelona. When she told us she saw a parrot out the window, we were very skeptical. But there it was!

The walk to the chocolate museum was easy and took less than 10 minutes.

4AACA598-03CF-4626-920C-5A83F550A024.jpeg
The price was very reasonable and I loved that the tickets were chocolate bars.

79414C1F-73AB-415B-8128-83ED8F1B03F6.jpeg

The chocolate sculptures inside were very fun. We also learned a lot about the history of chocolate.

B4AADCD9-6311-4697-A022-FDAF5AA00376.jpeg

Behind the museum is a culinary institute and they were preparing for a chocolate sculpture competition. It was fun watching them build these.

After a couple hours at the museum, we headed back on the metro to the condo. I was glad we chose this for the afternoon. It gave us some nice walking time and it was a pretty short time investment.

A40D1856-CE64-4B8F-B140-B3201EAFF20A.jpeg
Dog in backpack. Awwww.

For dinner we had the food we had purchased at the market. It was amazing! We spent the evening playing games and reading. I also did some laundry. We had all packed with the idea that we would need our clothes pretty much all clean by the time we boarded the ship. Having laundry facilities in the condo was so helpful!

Then it was off to bed before we had our last day in Barcelona!

Next Up: Montjuïc.

Montjuïc

Our plan for today was to go check out Montjuïc. My parents hadn't made it up there when they'd been in Barcelona before, and the Miró museum was something I really wanted to see. My husband is an artist so he wanted to live vicariously through us too. Finally, I thought DD would like the castle.

So, after a slowish start to the day and our breakfast staples of fresh bread, eggs, fruit, and coffee, we headed out.

It was a metro ride to the bottom of the funicular and then up to the top!

76595E89-4247-4BE4-8F95-493D15BDDAF2.jpeg
We only needed to use 1 trip on our T10 cards for both legs. The trick is to make sure you don't exit the station as you go between the train and the funicular.

The walk from the funicular to the Miró foundation was very easy.

Inside, the collection was amazing. I'm not a huge art person, but it was so fun. And the art was really accessible for DD. She also had fun practicing her Spanish colors while we looked.

2290D3BF-1604-4EF9-AD2B-B65449C81FE1.jpeg

There were several school groups in the building. Just the presence of the teachers seemed to keep DD on task too. Haha!

I had seen pictures of this on several different occasions. I had no idea it was a tapestry or so big!

FDDB18AB-E395-41B2-9732-964434F3879E.jpeg

There was also a sculpture garden on the roof. Very cool.

We used the restroom and made our gift shop purchases. Then we took a cab up to the castle.

That was super fun and DD really enjoyed it. The views were amazing and you could see the cruise ships!

B00DFC01-4E7F-4B74-956B-6ADF5609D015.jpeg
We'll be there tomorrow!

We headed back and had paella for lunch at Vinitus. It was lovely to have one more amazing meal at our favorite restaurant. Today's paella was black rice with squid and other seafood. Sooooo good.

Back to the condo for some more laundry, packing, game playing, and reading. Everyone else took a nap, but I did not. I had only slept like 3 hours the night before, so I wanted to keep myself extra tired so I could get a good night's sleep before boarding.

For dinner, we went to a new place around the corner.

D999AB3A-857C-4E3C-98D9-F1BE2CCDC92F.jpeg

It was super cute and DD had been begging to try it.

It was delicious, but the portions were crazy! I felt like I was at an American restaurant.

1A6CB53B-C1B5-47D1-ADAF-87AC590289F5.jpeg

That's my dad's sandwich.

DD ordered pancakes. E3085927-F7AA-4A7C-BB37-DA9EE976A10E.jpeg

These were just like single layer cakes. I've never seen anything like it! She loved them though. Obviously.

The restaurant even gave her a cupcake to go. Sheesh!

Then we headed back for our last night.

4384A30E-4175-4642-81A9-970B689C4A31.jpeg

We all did our nails and then we were off to bed. It was a pretty laid back day, but that was good because we wanted to be sure we were ready for Saturday.

Next up: Cruise Day!

Wow, you saw some great sights in Barcelona! And I loved how you are making sure you daughter learns about art (I guess having an artist dad helps)!

Can't wait to see the cruise!

I am loving your review so far and will be jotting down notes about Barcelona as we get a day there between cruises :) By the way, Nespresso is far and away the better coffee compared to Keurig. It's a bit more "European" in that it's more espresso based but it's so, so good - you should get one for home!
