Hi there!! Well, we've only lived here for about a month now so maybe we are still in the honeymoon phase, but so far we love it!!I wish!!! I love Vegas!!!! We'll be visiting in October though!
How do you like it so far???? Dh keeps looking at jobs that could transfer us there.....and I'm interested in checking it out.
I forgot to say.... Have a great time when you come out here!!!!!I wish!!! I love Vegas!!!! We'll be visiting in October though!
Yikes. That doesn't sound good. Have you lived here long?I live in vegas and hate it.
Oh, Huntington Beach is really nice. We've been there a few times. I can see why it's "getting darker" for you. Ah, but you're still close enough to visit. We've been here for 14 years. I'm in the grey area but it's getting darker all the time. Of course when you grew up near Huntington Beach there's really only one way to go . We live near Green Valley although DD skates in Summerlin almost every mornig. There are other LV disers but I don't think they get on this board much. Welcome to the neighborhood and remember it's a dry heat.
Hi Carole! Thanks for the welcome. And I'm happy to hear that after 3 years you are still enjoying living here. That's good news.Hi Beth,
Welcome to Vegas. I have lived here for three years now. We used to live in Long Island and while I do miss alot about Long Island, I don't miss the snow. We also live close to Summerlin and I'm happy with the school that my 2 girls go to. I did'nt really like Vegas when we first got here but now I love it.

I wonder if we are close to each other. Do you know where the Boca Park shopping center is? There's a Target in there and some smaller stores and restaurants, including a Cheesecake Factory (one of my personal faves ).
Anyways, we aren't far from that at all. Which is dangerous for both my wallet and waistline!!
Hmm, that's interesting. About the porn stuff I mean. I can guarantee that would not happen in this neighborhood. They have TWO Home Owner Associations and are very strict. They have security that patrols the area and the mailboxes are locked. My DF and her family lived in Vegas, she did not like it at all. She did not think it was a good place to raise a family. This was 3 years ago, they moved back to GA and were so happy to be back there. The kids were 10 and 12. She did not like the fact that during the in summer they had to stay inside becaue of the heat, the house had a pool, but it was too hot to use it and they did not like the influence of the casinos and the entire general scene Vegas had to offer for raising a family. She was not one for the bright lights of Vegas, nor was her husband. . .I think the straw that broke the camels back is when porn literature starting showing up in her mailbox and literature handed to her and members of the family even when they were out shopping. She also hated the traffic! He had been transferred there and they thought this would be a chance for a new life. . .
Wishing you and your family the best of luck, hope it works out for you. How do you like the heat? I have been there once and could not tolerate the heat when I went to visit my DF.
Wishing you
Okay so you know the area. I still get a little turned around when trying to tell people where we live. We are close to Summerlin but not in it so it's hard to explain. lolI'm actually further north by Craig & Tenaya (about 10 minutes) but I know exactly where Boca Park is. I shop and eat there a lot. Just last Saturday we ate at Gordon Birsch (sp?) right next to Cheesecake Factory. The food was really good and we got seated right away which is really surprising for Vegas.
My DH and I own a business in Summerlin and have friends that live there so we are there quite often. We have 2 DDs, ages 13 and 10. What ages are your kids?

I've never been to Gordon Birsch but I'm always on the look out for a new place to try so I'll have to remember that one. Thanks.
That's great you own your own business. I bet it keeps you busy though.
I have 4 kids. My son is 12 (13 in Dec.), my DD is 10 (11 in Nov.) and then I have twin girls who are 7.
My older DD will be 14 in Dec and my younger DD will also be 11 in Nov. Is your DD in middle school or elementary? Since my DD started school in NY she started school at 4 because you had to be 5 by Dec. 1. Here the cutoff is earlier so she is a year younger than some of her friends. She started middle school this year. My baby is growing up.
Looks like our DDs are about the same age. Her b-day is Nov. 19 and she is in middle school. I guess that's what they call it here. It's 6th grade. And she also started when she was 4 because we were in CA and as long as she turned 5 by Dec. something, can't remember now what, then she could start.
So she's younger too. She's tall though and sometimes I have to remind myself she's only 10.
They do grow up so fast!
Don't worry about getting turned around in the neighborhood. When we first got here I would curse the 215. I hated it. Now it's no big deal. What was hard for me to get used to is the way the roads are set up. For example, you can be driving down Rainbow and it just stop and then it will pick up again a few blocks down the road. Another pet peeve is how street names change names. By me Durango turns into Rampart as you go south and then it turns into Fort Apache. Why can't it be just one name? It took a little while but you'll get used to it and you'll be whizzing around the roads in no time.
Great, more confusion!! LOL Actually I've never been good with street names. I'm more of a landmark person. So when ever I give out directions it goes something like, "Turn left at the gas station, then right at the McDonalds, and then again at the tree with the purple flowers." Or whatever. But you get the idea. So as long as they don't take away my landmarks, I'm okay.
As for people thinking that Las Vegas is "Sin City", we don't live on the strip. Our neighborhood is just like any other suburban neighborhood. I still shop at Kohl's and Target. We hardly ever gamble. We do have great restaurants. I would recommend the Vitner Grill on Charleston for a splurge. The weather is fantastic. Yes it gets very hot in the summer but we don't have to contend with nasty winters. After coming form NY, I will gladly give up commuting to work in the winter. It also is not usually humid (though these past weeks have been more humid than usual). We were in Florida last year and I thought I would die with the humidity. I'll take the dry over the humid any day of the week. Coming from NY, I also don't think that traffic is too bad. Could be worse. We live in a beautiful house and have made wonderful friends. Our business is doing fantastic. I don't think that we would have been so successful in NY.
I totally agree. That's why I said, when we are home or driving around our neighborhood, it doesn't even feel like I am in "Vegas". We could be in any town, USA practically. But what's cool, is we are near the Strip so that option is always there if we choose. And I love Target. (see my tag! lol)
I cannot wait for it to get a little cooler. Although since every place is kept so cool the weather doesn't bother me that much. It will be nice to have a winter with temps in the 60's and not in the teens!
I hear ya about Florida. As much as it would be fun to live near WDW, the humidity would do me in. I am happy that now we are only about 4 hours from Disneyland! Since I grew up in So Cal (Los Angeles, then Glendale, then Burbank), that feels like home to me and I cannot wait to get back there and get some annual passes so we can start going again.
Do you all ever make it out to Disneyland?
It sounds like things have really worked out here for you and your family. That's great.
No way, really?? That's so funny. What are the odds of that. My DD's name is Noelle, she'll get a kick out of hearing that!Hey Beth,
My DD's birthday is also Nov. 19th. Small world! She is not tall though. She is on the petite side. I just told her that I have been talking on Disboards to someone whose DD has the same birthday and she was pretty excited.
Funny that you mention Disneyland. I just made reservations this weekend to go during Nevada Day weekend. We went for the first time over Memorial Day weekend and had a blast. We're going to drive down on Oct. 25 and come back on the 28th. I love being so close! We may just have to get the annual passes too.

And yes it is a small world since we were planning to go over Nevada Day too! Well, originally I wanted to be there on my b-day which is 10/24 but then the kids would miss school, which I'm okay with, but not so soon and not when we can wait and go on Nevada Day when they are off.
At the time, I'd never heard of Nevada Day but now that we know about it might as well just go then. I'm waiting to see if my husband can get the time off. He works at UMC, but since he's new there it might be hard to start requesting days off right away. I'm keeping my fingers crossed though.
Are you going to that Mickey's Halloween Treat (I think that's what they call it) at California Adventure? I'm not sure if we will yet or not. I've been to MNSSHP and it was just okay for me. I was there on a really busy day though so that probably has alot to do with why I was less then thrilled.
Either way I am so excited to see the park decorated for Halloween. Even though we used to go all the time, they didn't do Halloween back then. We moved to MI the summer of 2004 and they didn't start decorating the whole park until after we moved.
So it will be fun to see everything, especially since I love Halloween.
Hopefully your DH will be able to get time off. What does he do at UMC? My DH is a pediatrician but he doesn't have priviledges at UMC any more. Too far too go and round everyday. We are going to close the office early on Oct. 25 and drive to Disneyland that afternoon. We'll come back Sunday morning. We are going to stay at the Camelot Inn. I remember passing by it on our last trip. It's really close to the parks. We can't wait to see the parks decorated for Halloween. We're probably not going to do the Mickey's Halloween Treat. The ticket presale is sold out for the 26th and I think that the fee is pretty high for trick or treating. We're content to just go to the parks and have our own fun! Now I just have to talk my DH into going sometime for Christmas so we can see the Christmas decorations. Maybe next year!
