so now I am looking at Memorial Day weekend. Insanely crowded. I know.
Coral

Actually, Memorial Day Weekend isn't that bad if you get an early start each day and plan to swim in the afternoon and return to parks at night.

DD's bday is May 28th (so always on or around Mem Day) so we have celebrated her b-day there most years...

This past May was the first year we didn't go in May. She was bummed :guilty: but i told her to be lucky she did get to go so often for her b-day but we did go in August for Pete's mini-meet and that was fun.

I would love to get a couple of her friends to go for a girls trip next May 2009for her 16th (well maybe.)

:rotfl:

My DS8 is the wanderer. When we were at WDW, he was pushing my Mom's wheelchair, where it was fairly flat and nobody else around. He just left her go and went to look at something. Since she was on a slight incline, she just kept rolling. When I was done laughing, I grabbed her wheelchair before she picked up too much steam!

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Oh, Mike I am picturing it and that is too funny!

"Go granny go granny go granny go"

Our friends (from our ABD) did this isn Sept, also! I wonder if you were on the sam eone.... Do you post on the ABD boards? Their names start with A..... ;) They are flying out here in May to visit us!

Steph we were on the Sep 15th ABD
Were they on this date?
We had a couple of people whose first names started with A, no one with a last name that started with an A

Would i be a horrible parent if i sent my dd away as a CIT as GS camp for a month?

It is only $430 and she only has to leave camp on Saturdays. (for changeover)

They have one that would start right after 4th of July and she'd be home in time to pack for the trip. (august 9th)

Sounds like a plan to me.... and at the bargain price of $430. They should be paying me to take her home...:rotfl:

I work for Crozer. Any chance I might bump into you?

Unfortunately no. At least not yet, it's still not an option. That would be much better than my first choice of AI Dupont in Wilmington. Everything else is center city or the Northeast.

Hopefully we can get together with you for the Star Wars exhibit though!

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Probably the funniest thing was that he didn't even say anything. He just turned and ran to whatever it was that caught his eye (I don't even remember exactly what, but it was nothing too exciting.) My Mom didn't even realize he was gone at first, until she heard my Dad and I laughing hysterically about it.

Did you see the movie Meatballs?:scared1:

"We are the CIT's so pity us,
The kids are brats the food is hideous...."

I think it would be great! GS camp was one of my absolute favorite memories as a child. They could be doing soooo much worse during the summer.

If she wants to go by all means, send her! CIT is fun - you get some minor responsibility & learn leaderhip skills, but you still get to have fun like a kid.

I did it one year in HS and it turned into a paying job a few years later. I worked at a GS camp for 10 weeks between freshman and sophomore year of college. The pay wasn't great, but I had a ton of money at the end of the summer since there was no place to spend it in the woods!

I have been up and dressed and coifed early this morning.
2nd DD was selected as Student of the 6 Weeks and they had a breakfast honoring her. She was pretty proud. Older Sister was not that thrilled that she would have to get up an hour early to sit in the cafeteria just so her sister could get another award.
It is so hard having kids where the younger one is the one that excels in everything and is recognized for what she does. :guilty:
Megan was born at 1 pound and Miranda at almost 9 - had to make a difference.
We find it a very hard line to acknowledge Miranda's accomplishments while not discouraging Megan.
Anyway, hope everyone has a great day!

Oh, I can really relate to this!

DD8 is very outgoing and athletic. DS12 gets irritated because she seems to excel at everything she tries. He is much more shy and artistic. He is an amazing artist and he plays piano and clarinet, but he is just not good at sports....no matter how hard he tries. He gets really down about that, since sports are very important to 12 year old boys. He always felt a little excluded at school because of it. I have to say, now that he is in middle school it's much better. He is very involved in band and he ran CC and loved it, and plans to run spring track. Unfortunately, he won't be able to do CC and band in HS, since they have the same season. I'm pretty sure he'll stick with band.

But he still gets down about it every once in a while. He hates being shown up by his little SISTER in sports. We try so hard to stress his talents to him, but he tells us his talents are "no big deal". I tell him he feels that way only because they come so easy to him!

I think that it is inevitable that there are comparisons and competition with siblings:confused3
My DD10 is the social butterfly-makes friends very easily. She also has this amazing work ethic. DS14 does not have her work ethic at all and has a hard time making friends, but he is extremely bright and plays clarinet beautifully. He would have straight A's if he only turned things in on time:sad2:

We signed them up for Tae Kwon Do about 2 1/2 years ago and we are so glad we did. It is great exercise for both of them and they really get a lot out of the classes. They get tested on a regular basis and the competition keeps them from falling behind and giving up.
There are people of all ages in the classes. Just watched a middle aged man today get his white belt (beginner) and he was beaming. It is not for someone with bad joints though (which is what keeps DH and I from joining).

Opinions please:
Bill is just not that excited about going to WDW. I am considering taking the girls by myself.
On one hand they are almost 12 and almost 9. 8 yo very mature, 11- not so much.
They know WDW very well but 11 yo tends to be a wanderer. We have lost her at WDW and the State Fair. Very scary.
I would work them very extensively with either walkie-talkies or cell phones before hand and make sure we all have one.
They get along like typical sisters. Every day has its ups and downs.
Oh yeah- MiL threw a fit cause we were taking oldest DD during the time they usually go to tennis camp so now I am looking at Memorial Day weekend. Insanely crowded. I know.
My 1st choice would be to take younger DD only since her lowest grade is a 97 and she can weather the zeros they will get easier than Megan. But, on the other hand Megan is so used to getting zeros for failing to turn ion her homework- a few more won't make that big an effect.
Am I crazy for even considering?

Coral

While your DDs would be fine, you would have a much better time if you could find someone to go with you:confused3 Much easier to keep up with the kids when there is another adult there to share the worry with;)
(Definitetly take the walkie talkies:thumbsup2 )

Personally, I would skip tennis camp over school, but that is just IMHO. I played tennis as a kid on our local junior high courts with my friends for fun. I'm sure tennis camp would be more important if you were very good at it though (which I wasn't:rolleyes1 )

I knew you could do it :lmao: :lmao:

You're close... There will be an announcement up today on the boards, but it is true, we will be having a Virtual DCL House Party on Saturday night. WebmasterRegina and I will be hosting it. There will be prizes every half hour and at the end of the party, we're giving away a 4 night cruise :cheer2: :woohoo:

And it will be in a different chat room, because the DIS chat is still broken :sad2:

:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

I think I have come to the conclusion that you are correct. I would probably be watching them the whole time and not the sites.
This whole trip just seems doomed. Tonight, at least at one time, Bill and both girls have said they do not want to go to WDW. :confused3 I mean do I have bizarre kids or what? Fine, I will spend the $ some other way.
The 1st time I ever went to WDW it was just my Mom and in in 1996. I am thinking about asking her again but since my parents have turned into world travelers it seems like they are always gone.
I am having a pity party for myself tonight so please feel free to ignore.
I am sure I will feel better tomorrow.

All I can say is this has been a very WEIRD evening! DH just got off the phone with CNN - Really!

I think I have mentioned before that he is very into Kiva.org and making micro-loans ($25 at a time) to individuals in 2nd and 3rd world nations. He has been involved with this for well over a year and spends a lot of time on the KivaFriends board (sort of like DIS for Kiva folks). Today, Kiva called him to ask if he would be willing to be interviewed. CNN Money is doing a segment on Kiva and wanted to talk to a lender who had loaned money to an individual that they had video for. DH fit their criteria and it helps that we are near a major city (about 30 miles from downtown Chicago). He agreed to do it and CNN called to do a pre-interview. The original plan had him going downtown tomorrow to a studio - but on the phone they asked if he would be willing for them to come to the house and tape him at his computer! It still isn't finalized - they'll call tomorrow morning with the final plan. They plan to air the segment "several times" this weekend.

As I said .... a VERY weird evening!

OMG, I have to take the rest of the week off from work just to clean the house up!

Thankfully, the house isn't too bad (I had it really clean 2 weeks ago and it hasn't had time to get horrible yet! :rotfl2: ). There is a LOT of clutter in the dining room where DH uses his laptop for his Ebay selling. If CNN tells us they are coming here, then we will be doing the "dump it in the junk room" method of cleaning for that stuff! The floors are pretty good because I have been using the Roomba vaccuums that I received for Xmas, so once the clutter is gone it should just be some quick dusting.

And ... I really, really, really HOPE they decide to do it downtown at the studio!!!! :rolleyes1 The idea of a crew from CNN in my house really freaks me out! :upsidedow :scared:

I don't think i have room for a Dust Bunny in my junk room! :rotfl:
And you're right, i think i'd be suggesting the alternate location.

Very topical here in the UK at the moment.

Yesterday, I filled up my Volvo and I noticed that the price is £1.01 per litre of petrol (gas).
If you convert that to an Imperial Gallon of petrol then I am paying £4.62 a gallon. Converted into US Dollars, that is $9.02.

However, please bear in mund two things about this, our Imperial Gallon is slightly larger than a US Gallon and most importantly, we have a free Health Service !!

When Andrew joins later he may confirm that where he lives, he pays slightly more for his petrol.

Finally, it cost me about £50.00 to fill up my Volvo estate which is slightly over $100.00. I don't think I've spent that much on gas on all of my holidays to the US, combined:)

David

But David at least you get paid in pounds and not dollars.:rolleyes1 The rate of our falling economy...we might have to rename our dollar to a penney.:sad2:

Here are a few that we took. The decorations were only up for the first 2 days that we were there. Sorry they're blurry!

Great minds think alike Cheryl. :rotfl2:

Thanks for the compliment!!!:woohoo: It s been a long time since anyone said that to me.:rotfl2: :rotfl2:

We're booked on the eastern repo and have decided to spend a couple of days before at Disneyland. We've been to the world many times but this is our first trip west as a family and are total newbies to disneyland. Right now, we're stuck on where to stay around Disneyland. Does anyone have any suggestions of the hotels/motels on S. Harbor? We're a family of 8 so we're used to getting connecting rooms. We'd love to stay at one of the Disney hotels but are aware of the savings staying at the others.

Thanks in advance for the info.:)

My favorite, right across the street hotels are: Carousel Inn and Suites, Camelot Inn and Suites, Best Western Park Place Inn, and Tropicana Inn. I've stayed in suites at the Carousel (a room with 2 queens and a bath, then another room with another queen and full bath) and the Camelot (room with a king plus sofabed and another room with 2 queens and a bath). Here's a link to my review with picutres of the suite at Camelot http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?p=15270519#post15270519
The Carousel also has suites with 4 queens, I believe those are their "View Suites". All do have connecting rooms too, but sometimes the suites are more cost effective.

Pretty much any hotel on South Harbor between 1380 (Howard Johnson) and 1650 (Ramada Maingate) will be fine. I've stayed at just about all of them, and would again. Anything farther and you're looking at a more difficult walk back at the end of the night. The only exception I have is I will never stay at the Park Vue. I had a terrible customer service experience there and will never be back.

We ended up driving because we couldn't be guaranteed that our flights would go, they were still trying to get air up and running again. Every single overpass between New Jersey and WDW had an American flag hanging from it.

We went late Sept/Oct 2001. Everyone here was trying to tell us not go as it wasn't safe - when could possibly be safer in actual fact with all the heightened security? We also figured it was just our way to not let the terrorists win. We'd lived at Heathrow airport in the 1970s when the IRA terrorists regularly bombed the airport car park and area so perhaps had a more "you won't stop us" attitude to terrorism. The police and fire department used to stop into our house for a cup of tea when they were done.

2001 was the first time we could afford to stay onsite as hotel prices plummeted. We got a room at All Star Music for the same price as a cheap offsite motel.
