DDA Chapter 11

:scared1::scared1: Are you crazy woman??!!

Janet- I am no good to you....my dishwashers (plural...one needs to leave and the other come in) are both older and I have no clue what they are.

In some ways I wish we could go back to just washing by hand.

Most children and their parents don't remember music teachers... :sad1:

However, tonight at rehearsal, the director of the BLS program at UMW came up to me to ask if I had been his music teacher in elementary school. That is second young man this month who remembered me from 30 or more years ago! I have to say, that made my decade! :goodvibes

I remember my 2nd-4th grade music teacher very well. I see him walking at the mall sometimes. A couple of months ago I stopped him as he was passing and we talked for a little bit. He remembered who I was and recalled my name easily, which suprised me as I only had him for 2 1/2 years, plus he's easily in his upper 80s-90s now.

Janet - I have a Kenmore. The only thing that I use is the regular wash and sometimes I use the energy saver. Just make sure you get a quiet one.

Janet - I have a GE. I'd actually recommend a one month subscription to Consumer Reports online...it was worth the $5 (for one month) for our grill, washer and dryer and our soon to be new refridgerator.

How cool! What a great opportunity! :goodvibes

Good luck, Theresa! :wizard:

Elin congratulations on the safari :cool1:

Theresa congratulations & good luck with the essay :wizard:

Those of you that have dishwashers, what type/model do you have, does it have all the bells & whistles or just the basics & most important does it clean well? I do not need anything fancy, just one that works well.

Ours is LOUD. Loud enough that I am really wondering if it works properly. Have to check the brand when I get home. My bosses have a Maytag Jetclean EQ Plus. It is pretty good. :thumbsup2 My ExBosses had some fancy thing. I'll have to do a search and see if I can find the brand. That was the one that when the garbage disposal clogged it tripped some kind of overflow switch on the dishwasher that required a service call to reset it. :headache:

EDIT: I think the fancy one was Dacor.

So I caught up:

:cool1: :cool1: on the safari, Elin. What a cool Christmas present:goodvibes

I would have never even thought to apply to the Visitors Bureau....I am so stoked to write this essay, even if it's not a subject I know much about.

Thanks, Theresa. I think he will love it!

And, WAY TO GO! Write the heck out of that piece, Missy. How cool would that job be? Is it definitely with the Visitor's Bureau or for an ad agency they have hired?

:yay: I was able to book the Wanyama Safari for our arrival day so I don't even need to add on a night. There is my Christmas present to Bob taken care of. Let's hope the two of us can stand eating at Jiko twice that week; we are taking the girls there for Christmas Dinner.

:cool1:

As one of those other Americans I think it is easier for us to forget....espescially because most of us don't have the news on that early so we didn't "see" it first hand just in the replaying of the video.

My Grandmother and I were watching the Today show and it was preimpted to show the first attack. At the time they were saying it was an accident and then the 2nd plane hit Live. I will NEVER forget the sight of it.

Janet we have a 16 year old GE portable. And it still works just fine. No bells or whistles.

You realize it will now break....

Janet we have a Kenmore with no bells or whistles. It cleans well.

So I caught up:

:cool1: :cool1: on the safari, Elin. What a cool Christmas present:goodvibes

I have worked on Tater all day. Well I ran out the get the kids as it was early release, but all day other than that. I think he is looking good. Nick has no yellow shoes or pants so I'm not sure what we will do about that area

Here are a few shots of Tater

I tried to make the visor of the hat match, but I'm not sure that I was successful.

I am on my soapbox here... it isn't that they don't know what it means. It is that they assume you don't mean THEM! Either that or they can't read... :confused3

It seems that a lot of people assume that signs/rules are made for others, not them. It drives me nuts.

:goodvibes

I can't remember having a music program in K-2, but we probably did. I remember my music teacher in 3-4 well. I remember having someone come into our room in 5th grade with a piano, but I don't remember anything else about her. (I was in three elementary schools). The man who taught music in 6-8 grades is definitely memorable. He did some great things, and he did some horrible things. The worst for me was the "singing tests" that we had to do a couple of times a year. It was so humiliating for those of us who couldn't sing. (I can't carry a tune in a bucket.) Each person would have to pick a card with a combinations of notes on it and sing them in front of the class. Then he would make snarky comments about some of us. He really couldn't understand that it wasn't as easy for some of us as he thought it was. I didn't take any music in high school. By then, I knew that I am hopelessly unmusical.

I think that is wonderful! Most adults who do remember their music teachers are women. For two grown men to come to me with stories of what we did decades ago was a delight!

When I ask my students and their parents if they have music in school or who their teacher is, I would guess that fully 10% don't even know they are having music instruction and another 60% cannot begin to tell me the name of their teacher! And these are not just the little ones I teach. I am also talking about middle school students who chose to take band or chorus or orchestra. :confused3

I don't begin to think that this is just about music teachers. I think that our kids see so many adults in their schools these days that there is an overload of faces and job functions.

I agree with you on the many faces in elementary school. I couldn't keep track of all the people that were in and out of Miles' room during the day last year. Each of his "specials" teachers has a separate room, though, and I do know his music teacher. I can't wait for orchestra to start, because I love the elementary strings teacher at his school. Matthew and Laura have the same orchestra teacher for 7th through 12th grades. She calls it her "6 year torture program." She is also terrific.

I remember all of my music/band teachers.

The kids here have a lot of specials. They are all 40 minute periods. They have PE and Spanish twice per week, and Library, Health, Art and Music once per week. That starts in Kindergarten. I get a kick out of the work sheets that Colby brings home with Spanish words on it as he doesn't know his English letters thoroughly, certainly not well enough to read :rotfl:

Wow! They do have a lot of specials. All of our schools are on a 6 day "week." For elementary school there are: three days of PE, two days of computer lab, and one day each of art, library, and music. Health is in with the science curriculum, and foreign language doesn't start until 7th grade.

For middle school there are three days of PE/6-day cycle all year (all three years). General music is a half year course in both 6th and 8th grades. Orchestra, Band, and Chorus are every day all year (if you have elected to take them). If you are in band or orchestra, you also are pulled out of class once during the 6-day cycle for small group lessons. Health is a half year course in 7th grade. Art is a half year course in 6th and 7th grades. Foreign language (we have only three to choose from in our district: Spanish, Italian, French) is a regular class in 7th and 8th grades.

For high school there are three days of PE/6-day cycle all year (all four years). There are several band choices, several chorus choices, and one orchestra choice. Those meet every day, all year as regular classes (plus pull-outs for small group lessons). One half year of health is required during high school in order to graduate. One full year of foreign language in high school is also required for graduation. The foreign language choices are the same as middle school.

The class with the toughest attendance requirements is PE. If you miss a day for any reason (including illness and leaving school early for an athletic meet), you need to make up the PE class or lose 5 points. If the teacher doesn't think you are trying hard enough during class, they can also subtract points. No PE = no graduation. The PE grade is figured into the quarterly GPAs, but it isn't used for class ranking. So, I have finally come to the conclusion that a 90 or higher really isn't cause for make-ups.

Back to music in schools... I have a nagging question. Do you all buy a stringed instrument, then a woodwind/brass, AND a recorder?! ;) I can't understand that. Or do they share the stringed instruments (which makes sense) and you buy your own instrument that gets mouthed.... or just buy a mouthpiece maybe? It seems absurd if you would have to purchase instruments your child wasn't interested in, for one year! How do the schools handle this? :confused3

That being said, depending on the burden on the parents, I love that they get the basics of a couple different instruments while they're young, and can still have plenty of time to decide if one is right for them! When we got to middle school, you chose either choir or band. There weren't enough periods for both (which obviously continues worse into high school!), so you made a decision then. If my parents wouldn't have "made me" take piano for so long, the only instrument I might have ever played would be the recorder! Of course, since then I have dabbled with the flute and the guitar.... but only because I love music. Had I not, I personally feel like I would really be missing out on an important set of skills that come from playing an instrument other than the recorder! ;)

Even if kids don't grow up interested at all, it's neat that they have some experience playing and, I presume, reading music!

Our schools rent instruments up through the end of middle school. If I remember correctly, it is about $50/year for instrument rental. We always just assumed that the mouthpieces were properly sterilized, so I don't want to re-think that now. In high school, they have enough string instruments to supply everyone who doesn't own one. You need to supply your own band instruments in high school either by renting from an outside company or buying your own. We did buy Matthew a used trumpet (and a new mouth piece). He only ended up using it for a year, but...

Janet we have a maytag quiet series 200....so far the only issue I have had was a broken handle...but it was an easy fix.....I do at least 2 loads a day so it's used quite a bit....I don't think it has a lot of bells & whistles.....

We need a new dishwasher, too. Ours is a Kitchen Aid that is 30+ years old. I'm not sure exactly how old, since it came with the house. It has been great until recently. Now it is hard to start and is beginning to leak.

Princess and I went to the mall to look for tan pants and a black polo shirt for DS. Pants, no problem. Polo, nowhere to be found.

Princess has apparently become demonically possessed. She was HORRIBLE. :scared1: She is napping now, thank goodness! She has ballet at 4:45 today. We'll see how that goes.

Her diaper still leaked last night despite being in the "plain" kind Dadboss requested. If they want her to stay dry (not completely dry, just dry enough for the diaper to contain it) they are going to HAVE to limit her drinks at night and make her use the potty immediately before bed. Dadboss said he had her go potty an HOUR before bed. Um, no.

Finish Line has Disney Crocs for $15. I got a pair of the black/red for DS and the ice pink/lavender for Princess in the next size up. I think the flip flops and the Mary Janes are on sale, too. I got a pair of Geox sneakers for Princess at Nordstrom for $30 but she hasn't tried them on yet. She didn't have socks on so I figured we could try them on at home.

Thanks, Theresa. I think he will love it!

And, WAY TO GO! Write the heck out of that piece, Missy. How cool would that job be? Is it definitely with the Visitor's Bureau or for an ad agency they have hired?

Seems to be for the Visitor's Bureau...the first round was through an agency..I've officially hit the second round I think. :cool1:

Janet we have a 16 year old GE portable. And it still works just fine. No bells or whistles.

You realize it will now break....

Knock wood that it doesn't. It seems that the older appliances last forever, but the replacements go so quickly.

Theresa - that is so very exciting!!!

Deb - Tater is very handsome. How about brown tights? And don't worry about the shoes?

Tater is WONDERFUL! I remember back when I used to love to make the Halloween costumes (they were never as good as yours, though). Now, I just have no desire to do it. Poor Miles!
